Book Description

In March of 1944, Private Paul D. Veatch was shipped out to to the Pacific Theatre of World War II operations. Over the next year and half he was involved in combat in the Philippines, surviving both ambush and shipwreck. Separated from his unit, the 24th Infantry, through tragedy and rescue, he served with both the 21st and the 19th. When the war was declared over, he was part of the occupation force in Japan until his honorable discharge in 1946. This memoir of Veatch's experiences is a dramatic account of combat in the jungle and at sea and a memorable chronicle of one soldier's survival. It is also a remarkable coming of age story, as the young Private Veatch finds friendship, love, and, during his time at his last post, the ancient city of Kurashiki, a fascination for the Japanese culture. His account includes his perspective on historic battles, as well as his thoughts and feelings about combat, culture, home, and the transformation he underwent through war and peace.

5 out of 5 stars A Young Soldier's Medley of Experiences.......2001-10-20

Here is a thinking person's story of terror, resolve, fatigue, death, and redemption - of the vicissitudes
of war. No overblown theatrics diminish the drama of Mr. Veatch's experiences. Instead, in a most tender manner, the solder's story unfolds with increasing excitement at each new war venue. This book's beauty are the descriptions of a young soldier's medley of experiences, any one of which was life threatening. This book well illustrates the wondrous nature of the American soldier.

Book Description

Thomas A. Edison remains rooted in the popular imagination primarily as the inventor of the practical electric light, but he also continues to function in the lexicons of advertising and politics as a symbol of American individualism, ingenuity, and know-how. Introduced here with a broad range of primary sources for discussion, the American inventor emerges as a prolific mind, a tireless worker, and an inveterate self-promoter. Examples of Edison's own experimental notes, his personal correspondence, as well as press accounts provide an opportunity to explore the themes of modernization and the American ideology of progress. The volume includes an extended introduction, headnotes to the documents, illustrations, a chronology, discussion questions, a bibliography, and an index.

5 out of 5 stars From HISTORY TEACHER Review.......2004-03-12

"... The collection's strength is in the broad diversity of primary sources offered and the issues that Collins and Gitelman raise for student discussion. This is no mere biography of Edison the "Great Inventor." The sources include selections from Edison's memoirs, diaries, notebooks, and letters, as well as accounts of Edison and his inventions as presented by the popular media. We thus witness Edison fashioning his own self image-sometimes in contradictory ways-just as the press was turning him into a media hero. Laboratory records by Edison and his assistants chart the development of the phonograph and the use of electricity, while newspaper and magazine articles bear witness to the intense speculation surrounding the social effects Edison's inventions would create."

Book Description

The loss of a mother is one of the most traumatic experiences of a woman's life. At any age, a mother's death may leave a daughter with feelings of anger, abandonment and profound sadness that taint the way she views herself, her world and every other relationship around her. In this breakthrough book, author Patricia Commins, who lost her mother at 26, shows readers that the key to escaping the sorority of sorrow is by understanding their mothers as women and by feeling an ongoing connection with them. From this perspective -outside the parent-child relationship that is so fraught with conflict and complex emotions - women gain key insights into their mothers and themselves. By addressing the psychological and spiritual connection that remains after a mother's death, Remembering Mother, Finding Myself offers the essential element that is missing from other books on motherless daughters. The Path of Understanding -a unique experiential process based on journaling, conversations with friends and relatives, and meditative exercises- does not seek to negate the loss a woman feels when her mother dies. It instead gently leads her beyond the grief and pain to a new awareness, freeing her from forever trying to be the perfect daughter. Through her own illuminating experiences and those of other women, Commins shows women how to reconnect their deceased mothers while finding peace and self-acceptance. Included are interviews with dozens of women, including such notables as writers Joyce Maynard and Nancy Friday and psychiatrist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2006-08-19

What I liked best were the exercises she had at the end of each chapter. A well written and solid book.-Marvin B. Smith

5 out of 5 stars Mom loved me the most.......2006-08-09

Commins has written an insightful book that will cause you to reflect on what your mother has done for you and how it continues to affect you.
The exercises provide guidance on why you don't "fall far from the apple tree."
I recommend this easy to read book for all daughters.

5 out of 5 stars It Takes Guts to Remember; thank you for the Journey!.......2006-07-23

"Draw nearer and listen. Sit inside the circle, close by the fire of warmth and friendship. Tell me your story, and I'll tell you mine," Patricia Commins writes in concluding chapter five. Commins is not a psychologist, nor does she pretend to be. She is a grown woman who has summoned the guts to examine her relationship with her mother, and gives her readers the benefit of that experience. I for one, related to her story, her remembrances, her sense of loss, but most importantly to her joy at discovering her mother and herself. Immersing myself in Ms. Commins' book, I began to recall many forgotten memories of my own mother, a woman who embraced many roles. Mom was typical of the 40's and 50's Midwestern mom who baked cupcakes, scrubbed floors, hung the wash on the clothesline and nurtured her kids. But prior to embracing those roles, she was "Rosie the Riveter" - serving as a draftsman in Ford's River Rouge plant - responsible for the successful completion of the B-24 bomb bay doors. Through Ms. Commins deft ability of prying loose memories through her stories, I remembered mine. I related to her "spiritual e-mail" and found myself probing the memory banks surrounding my father. It matters not the gender of the parent with whom the reader had issues, or whether that parent is still among the living, Ms. Commins, through her gentle remembrances, humor, and down-to-earth approach, has given all readers a true gift. Thank you, Patricia.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the time.......2006-07-12

This book tries to be a personal memoir, a self-help guide, and perhaps an academic treatise on the psychology of mother-loss (though the author does not appear to be qualified, relying instead on others). It fails on all fronts. If you want to read personal accounts of women's experiences of mother-loss, Hope Edelman's books are better-edited.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a blessing.......2005-08-24

What a blessing this book has been for me! My mother passed away recently after a long illness. Our relationship was often turbulent and my childhood and teen years were sometimes difficult. I spent a lot of my time being angry with her but this book really opened my eyes as to the struggle my mother had just with trying to survive on a day to day basis. I saw my mother in this book and discovered the answers to many questions that baffled me about the kind of person she was. Loving and laughing one minute then crying and accusing the next minute. Now I know why. Thank you, Patricia, for writing this book. My mom and I had many good times too. She had a great sense of humour and I cherish that part of my mother. Your book is a precious gift.

4 out of 5 stars My old "stand-by" cookbook..........2007-01-20

I have had this cookbook for almost 7 years and have returned to it time after time when I needed a quick and delicious meal for hungry mouths! It's also a wonderful book for brunch, pot luck, and baby shower food ideas. I once used this book to make a friend an entire week's worth of meals to feed her family after she gave birth to twins! I just filled her freezer with some of these casseroles, and she pulled them out when she needed them.

The recipes are delicious, varied, easy-to-follow and relatively quick prep time, most are a 1/2 hour to 1 hour cook time. They also rely upon items that are usually in your cupboard or can be easily substituted with something you have on-hand. I also like that each recipe usually makes more than enough for a family of four and leaves some left-overs for lunch the next day. The recipes in this book go easily with a fresh bowl of salad, a slice of bread and an easy dessert, which means my family leaves the table satisfied. It leaves me satisfied as well knowing they were provided a hearty meal that didn't cost me a fortune in time and money! That being said, I usually use this book when I have no time to pre-plan a healthy meal. Not that these recipes are necessarily unhealthy, but they are not something I would feed my family every night of the week because they do tend to lean on pre-packaged (read high salt, high preservative, high hydrogenation, etc) items, meat, and high sugar (read ketchup, bbq sauce, etc). Hence, the 4 stars instead of 5 for a rating. If you, like me and so many others, are watching our bad carb and veggie intake these days, this cookbook is great for those nights when you just don't care because you are just too tired. We are allowed those kinds of nights sometimes and you'll be happy to reach for this book!

5 out of 5 stars The BEST!!!.......2003-09-10

Ninety percent of our meals features one new recipe. So, speaking from vast experience, this is one of THE BEST cookbooks I've ever used. Always delicious, fairly easy, but never skimping on ingredients or instructions (as happens with some cookbooks). In fact, all the "Favorite Brand Name" books are good (at least, the ones printed by Publications International, Ltd.--I haven't tried the others). Why? Well, these brand-name products won't want bad tasting recipes, nor will they want overly-difficult recipes. Their products wouldn't sell, right? So, they're a safe bet, anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Can you say, "Yummmm!".......2002-04-11

I never knew how to cook casseroles or one-dish recipes before. This book is packed full of recipes with full-page color photos. I've cooked about 7 or 8 recipes from here and have DOZENS of book marks for recipes I plan to try. And they freeze great too! You soon gain knowledge that if you always keep a few staples on hand (canned cream soups, rice, pasta, vegetables), then you have the makings of a great tasting casserole that your entire family will love.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks I have ever owned!!!.......2001-10-26

My family of 6 was getting bored with the same recipes. This book was such a life saver. The recipes are so easy and taste SO good. I have 4 children who are all picky eaters, but they love the food in this cookbook. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Cookbook for the busy family!.......2001-08-11

This cookbook is wonderful. It's recipes are not only easy to follow, but the ingredients the recipes call for are ones that are most likely to be in my pantry. The recipe is not afraid to call for a time saving ingredient such as a can of soup or a seasoning packet, so there's no "Martha Stewart made-from-scratch" guilt-trip going on here...It's also a great resource for party recipes and holidays. I can't recommend this book enough!

              Book Description

In this definitive new biography, Carol Ann Lee provides the answer to one of the most heartbreaking questions of modern times: Who betrayed Anne Frank and her family to the Nazis? Probing this startling act of treachery, Lee brings to light never before documented information about Otto Frank and the individual who would claim responsibility -- revealing a terrifying relationship that lasted until the day Frank died. Based upon impeccable research into rare archives and filled with excerpts from the secret journal that Frank kept from the day of his liberation until his return to the Secret Annex in 1945, this landmark biography at last brings into focus the life of a little-understood man -- whose story illuminates some of the most harrowing and memorable events of the last century.

4 out of 5 stars A Fresh Look at the Tragedy of Anne Frank.......2006-12-18

The Hidden Life of Otto Frank by Carol Ann Lee gives us a look at Anne Frank and her family from a different perspective, that of her father, Otto. The tragedy of Anne's short life is only heightened by the tragedy of her father's, who had to pick up his life and go on living after all of his family was destroyed by the Nazis. The fact that he was able to do so, and even become part of a new family is a real tribute to him. His absolute dedication to the memory of Anne and to the publication and promotion of her diary is laudable-- it is seen not only as a father's desperate attempt to retain some vestige of a daughter he obviously loved, but it is also his attempt to promote Anne's optimism and belief in the goodness of people.

Otto Frank's story is interesting enough; Ms. Lee did not need to spend so much time dwelling on the possible role of Tonny Ahlers into the betrayal of the Frank family. A short chapter would have been enough, but Ms. Lee keeps returning to her theory to hammer her point home. It is distracting from a book that has enough drama as it is. To me, the wonder is that the family was able to remain hidden for so long when it seems that there were actually many people on the outside who knew about the Secret Annex.

Generally children outlive their parents and hopefully become a credit to them. In the case of Otto Frank, however, it is he who is a credit to the memory of his extraordinary daughter.

3 out of 5 stars Touching, but Scrambling.......2005-12-07

I first saw this book while browsing through the bookstore, and was shocked by the title. It reminded me of too many tabloid books seeking to expose specious and degrading rumors. As someone who has read Anne's diary many times and who has had a great appreciation of her father from what I had read, I was curious as to what 'hidden life' would be brought against him. I started reading the book at the store, and luckily, it turned out better than what the title proclaimed it to be.

While I thought that the parts detailing Otto's life and his experience's with his family were interesting and well researched, I also felt that the parts about Tonny Ahlers were not so interesting. A lot of times I felt as though she was scrambling for a connection between Otto Frank and Tonny Ahlers when none was to be found. In all, I am not convinced by the proposition she put forth that Ahlers was the one who betrayed the Franks.

I often hated it when she finished talking about the Franks and moved on to Ahlers. If she had left Ahlers out, the book would have been a lot more enjoyable.

              5 out of 5 stars Very eye-opening.......2005-04-23

While there are many things that are explained about the characters in Anne Frank already, this book goes into very deep detail about them, even more than what one would've thought possible. I will reinforce what has been said by saying that the text was a little dry at times, but still a good read.

Some of the complaints I have with this book are, the author tries way too hard to make Otto be the good guy. She contradicts herself when she does this. For example, she claims that Otto married Edith, Anne's mother because he was in need of money. She then goes into great detail about how he needed this for his business and his family, but leaves out that he married her for her money. There are several other little things like that in there, also.

Another thing is with Tonny Alhers. The entire book basically makes the case that Tonny Alhers turned the people living in the secret annex, but in the epilogue, she contradicts herself by suggesting that Tonny's wife did it.

Still, this is a very good and eye-opening book. It shows that there was a lot more issues that went on than is mentioned in the Diary.

              4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it..........2004-09-01

I echo the previous reviews in that I did find the writing to be very dry at times, to the point that it was difficult to get through all but the most interesting parts of this book. But, in saying that, I have to admit that the parts I did find interesting were worth the 4 stars in and of themselves.

In reading the Diary of Anne Frank one of the things that you don't realize (or at least I didn't) is how thoroughly it's been edited. Otto Franks took great liberties in deciding what would and would not be shared with the public and after reading this book those edits, and the truth they hid, really shine through.

More than that, I found that Otto Franks to be as fascinating a person as his daughter (even if he is not as likable) and that fact made this book very enjoyable for me.

              2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2004-04-13

I loved the diary of Ann Frank, but this book pales in comparison. I found my mind wondering while reading it. I found it painful to even finish. In my opinion, the author should work on her writing style, keep the reader interested.
