Book Description

Betsy, a high-school history student, learns a personally important story of the hardships and hopes of a World War II POW when her grandfather is encouraged to tell his ordeal as a German POW. His training as a bombardier, his duties as an officer, and the anticipation of married life precede his harrowing story of being shot down in his B-24 over enemy territory on September 10, 1944. His POW experiences of deprivation, loneliness, and discomfort are interspersed with his wit, humor, and introspection despite the desperate conditions in the three camps in which he was held for nine months. A forced march from one POW camp to another in snowy January 1945, to avoid the advancing Russian troops, saps his energy and tests his morale. But his sense of duty and his dreams of leading a normal life with his new wife keep him going through the ordeal. Finally, liberation from Stalag 7A in Moosburg, Germany, comes on April 29, 1945, by General George Patton. Betsy ! learns her world history lesson, but also learns a more important family history lesson.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Story Of A Good Man.......2006-12-23

I found Vernon Gatewood's story interesting and inspiring. I grew up in the house next door to Mr. Gatewood in Marietta, Ohio, and I was always interested in his stories about the war before he wrote the book or even considered writing a book. My family would sometimes visit the Gatewoods and I'd talk to him, and I always thought he was a really good person. Just a really fine person in all ways. I remember he used to take walks down the street every day. Some years later I heard from my mom that Mr. Gatewood had written a book for his granddaughter about his experiences in World War II, so I told my mom to get me a copy and she got a few signed copies from him. I read his book immediately after I got it and really enjoyed it. It was easy to read, just plain and honest writing, nothing fancy or anything, but just a good story told in a way that anyone can understand.

I think that Vernon Gatewood is a true American patriot, he loves America and yet isn't afraid to speak his mind on what he thinks is right and wrong about different things too. He doesn't get very political in his book though, so anyone can appreciate this book no matter what their politics might be. His is the story of a bombardier whose plane was shot down over Europe during World War II, and whom spent time as a Prisoner Of War in Germany until he was released at the end of the war. Gatewood's story could basically be considered "the other guy's real story" compared to Yossarian, the fictional bombardier main character in Joseph Heller's "Catch-22". Vernon Gatewood isn't fictional though, he's the real deal, and Gatewood tried to walk the line and do what was right perhaps more than the comical and wild Yossarian character. I find both Gatewood's book and Catch-22 to be very interesting and important stories, and that is why I keep them side by side on my bookshelf. Another great book along such lines that I think deserves mention here is Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse-Five". Vonnegut was a real P.O.W. in World War II as well, and his story of the bombing of Dresden is both profound and compelling. Gatewood might not be as "fancy" a writer as Vonnegut or even Heller, but I think that Gatewood's story is just as interesting and important as any on World War II that I've read. Vernon Gatewood's story is another interesting piece of the puzzle, and I would recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Kriegie No Bomb!.......2002-02-10

Kriegie 7956 captures more than Vernon Gatewood as a POW in a German Prisoner of War Camp. It captures the reader and hooks him in a matter of minutes. Well written and easily read, this book can not be put down. Small in size, it is big in theme and conflict. The true story of Vernon Gatewood, a Marietta, Ohio native, and his "adventures" in training to be a bombadier, his actual flights, and in his incarceration in Nazi prisoner of war camps after his bomber crashed, makes for compelling reading. Mr. Gatewood and his daughter-in-law, Betty, have taken a historical time period that many junior high students know nothing about and have given them an exciting read that doesn't weigh them down with a lot of technical terms, but instead gives them the true feelings of a man who went through hell and back to return to his family. Filled with pictures from that time period, the book takes no more than a couple of hours of intense reading, but is well worth the price and the effort expended. If you want your child or students to learn about WWII from a different perspective, then Kriegie 7956 by Betty and Vernon Gatewood is,hands down, the best little book in town!

5 out of 5 stars Unique!.......2001-12-27

An excellent account of a student's discovery of her grandfather's experiences in WWII as a member of a bomber crew, and the trying tale of his survival as a POW in Nazi prison camps.
Extremely well written from a novel perspective, that of a student working on a history project.
A sleeper, everyone should get this book!

Let me start my review of "KRIEGIE 7956" by thanking my sister, Betty Jean Belkham Gatewood, for my copy. Betty and Vernon were nice enough to sign one and send it to me hot off the press. I loved every bit of it. Of course it was nice to be mentioned a couple of times too, thank you both.

If I may, I'd like to say a few words to each of the authors and to Betsy:

Betty Jean,

Thank you for helping Vernon to tell his story to Betsy and at the same time helping him get the story put down in a form that we can all enjoy. I hope to see more of your work in the future

I'm very proud of you. You have managed to capture the essence of Vernon's story and record it in such a way that the reader feels like they are there. At the same time you wrapped the story of Betsy's education around it. What a great format.

I know you wrote this with a couple of different audiences in mind, and honey I think you managed it very well. I hope the kids enjoy reading it, and learn as much from it, as I did. I'm sure they will.

Your bro,
Ernie

Vernon,

Thank you so much for the recounting your war remembrances for Betsy and to us, the readers. It must still be very difficult for you to recall the pain and difficulties you endured during your time as a kriegie and we all thank you for working with Betty Jean to record and publish your "Pursuit of Freedom" for Betsy and future generations.

Regards,
Ernie

Betsy,

I think you were the real winner/hero here. You learned a great history lesson from your grandfather Vernon and you were able to help your mother pass it on to others in such an entertaining way. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Much love to you,
Your Uncle Ernie

The book mirrors every baby boomers recollections of their parents that survived a depression and fought a world war. The greatest generation maybe overblown and tainted with perspective problems; however, there is no recent generation that survived, prospered and ultimately found a way back home to prosperity and family. It is a universal struggle of many and makes one feel guilty of not recording their own history.
It is well written and the dry wit of Lt. Gatewood survives the text. The book is not overblown with sentimentality or emotional gaffs. It is not flowery and the dialogue matches Lt. Gatewoods war time profession. Straightforward, concise and precise are words that come to mind.
This book should have multiple audiences---from that baby boomer recollecting their parents, to the young reader in school trying to grasp the realities of what that generation endured.

Book Description

Niel Bohr's life spans times of revolutionary change, in science and in its impact on society. Along with Einstein, Bohr can be considered as this century's major driving force behind the new mathematical and philosophical descriptions of the atom, the nucleus, and all that resulted from them. Abraham Pais, the acclaimed biographer of Einstein, traces Bohr's progress from his well-to-do origins in late nineteenth-century Denmark to his central position in the world political scene, particularly because of the development of nuclear weapons during the Second World War. Bohr was one of the great enabling figures in modern science, not only because of his direct involvement in the application of quantum theory to our understanding of the structure of the atom, but also because he gathered around him in Copenhagen most of the brightest young minds of the period. Figures like Pauli, Dirac, and Heisenberg, all required Bohr's imprimatur, to varying degrees, before they considered their work ready for widespread consumption. He had a complex relationship with Einstein, both in terms of their fundamental disagreements and their profound though distant mutual respect. He owed an important debt to his mentor, Rutherford - a man who came to serve, in many ways, as his role model. Pais describes the state of physics before Bohr and considers his legacy, both theoretical and practical. But more than this, he captures the essence of Bohr, the intensely private family man who, despite appalling personal tragedy, became one of the best-loved cultural figures of recent times.

Online Review
This book is set up perfectly. It includes chapters that are not about Niels Bohr, but on other scientists of the time, which helps understand more in depth of Bohr's studies. It is a very easy book to read where each chapter is broken up into subchapters that makes it even easier to read. Although it was a fairly straight forward book, it got very boring at times. This book may get very confusing at times because it does not only talk about Bohr, but also talks in depth of many other scientists that also worked with quantum physics.
Abraham Pais did a great job of portraying Niels Bohr not only as a great scientist, but also as a great man. He goes about to explain in depth Bohr's family, how many scientists influenced his work, and the kinds of experiments and studies that he did. By reading this book, we can tell that Abraham Pais has a science background as well because of his ability to explain the experiments of Bohr and other scientists in great detail. With his background, Pais was able to write a book that glorified not on Niels Bohr, but also the entirety of physics.

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRING: It's a small world after all.......2006-02-01

Abraham Pais's biography of Bohr, NIELS BOHR'S TIMES, IN PHYSICS, PHILOSOPHY, AND POLITY, isn't really about rock 'n' roll, and you can't find anything about Aimee Mann in the index, but anyone who has a sense of the multiplicity rampant in modernity ought to want to sit these people down for a good listen to the `It's Not Safe' song at the end of the `I'm with Stupid' (1995) CD by Aimee Mann. The CD liner notes has the words of the songs in alphabetical order, but Aimee Mann is loved as a songwriter well enough to have the lyrics and chords posted on the internet, with six chords for the first line, making it easy to verify that one of the three words between from and fun on the alphabetical list is used to describe the kind of "freak in this world in which everybody's willing to choose swine over pearls":

And maybe everything is all for nothing
Still you'd better keep it to yourself
'Cause God knows it's not safe with anybody else.

Those political planners who expected World War II to make the world into a safer place might not be ready to accept that `small' would be the idea most closely associated with any country which was conquered by Germany, and Denmark was occupied by the Germans in 1940. Just a few months after the war ended in 1945, "In a lecture to the Danish Engineering Society Bohr said that plutonium can be produced at the rate of 1 kilogram per day, causing allegations that he was giving away atomic secrets. This led him to send a clarification to the press stating that he did not know technical details about the production of active materials." (p. 511). Chapter 21, Bohr, pioneer of `glasnost,' shows the interaction of a scientist who wanted information to be shared openly with a political system that functioned on secret circus stunt principles. Only those with a need to know how the new stunt would be performed would ever be given enough information to use; small nations were expected to be purely spectators.

There are a few elements of philosophy in this book, most generally considered in Chapter 19, `We are suspended in language.' Small atoms hydrogen and helium played a large part in developing the old quantum theory in 1913-1916. Bohr was recognized early in his career, receiving the Nobel Prize for physics on November 9, 1922, when Albert Einstein was given the prize for 1921 a year late. (p. 211). Einstein is the heading for a column of topics in the subject index, and Chapter 11, Bohr and Einstein, reveals, "Music was a profound necessity in Einstein's life, not in Bohr's." (p. 225).

The second verse of `It's Not Safe' is a fair description of the themes of a biography:

You can take your own advice and try again
But a thousand compromises don't add up to a win
And they'd be happy if you'd only cover your tracks
But the trail of crumbs you've left won't help you find your way back

Physicists might talk about particles, but on a very small scale, things that are too tiny to see might be something else entirely, energy in the form of a wave, a matrix of mathematical values, or as ephemeral as the probability of a particle being at a particular place and time. Bohr won attention early in his career by being able to correlate the spectral lines for light given off by hydrogen (with four frequencies measured in 1859 and 1860, p. 141) with the energy levels of the single electron in the hydrogen atom. Bohr learned the Balmer formula for calculating the frequencies in February, 1913, and Bohr wrote a paper by March 6, 1913 which he sent to Rutherford for publication. There are calculations on pages 147-148 for energy states, the orbital angular momentum on page 150, magnetic moment on page 151, and "The insistence on the role of the outermost ring of electrons as the seat of most chemical properties of the elements, in particular their valencies, constitutes the first step toward quantum chemistry." (p. 152). In 1915, Bohr proved that ultraviolet light emitted by mercury vapor when the energy of an electron exceeded 4.9 eV gave "the first direct experimental proof of the Bohr relation!" (p. 184).

The idea of quantum mechanical probability was introduced by a paper by Max Born on June 25, 1926. (p. 286). Science may become more like opinion polling in the future, but Niels Bohr clung to the idea that physics still needed to be about measuring quantities which could be related to the laws of classical physics. Students attempting to confront new problems they faced in breaking atoms down into smaller particles came up with probability distributions of the electron in hydrogen like Fig. 9 on page 307, except that a footnote explains, "the size of the atom for n = 10 is actually about 100 times larger than for n = 1." All the extra space required for high energy levels only gets measured in secondary effects. "Heisenberg remembered how `Bohr emphasized the complementarity between temperature and energy to the extreme'." (p. 437). What we see is ordinary properties, but Bohr had to account for such by tracing the "matter back to the behaviour of assemblies of immense numbers of atoms." (p. 437). Maybe modern political thinking, as reflected in the ability to devise opinion polls which tell politicians whatever they want to hear, is closer to this notion of complementarity of diverse elements than our typically academic study of the classical political thinking of Plato about the good, or of Machiavelli's writings about the powerful direction of mass thinking by some all-conquering big lie. But Aimee Mann can sing like hell:

You can play along, but you'll just end up wrong somehow, won't you?

5 out of 5 stars Captivating!.......2003-01-11

Captivating biography! One of the best. In a class by itself!
Written before the popular Broadway play, "Copenhagen" by Michael Frayn, Pais' book covers the Heisenberg-Bohr meeting in 1941[the real one],--- and there is a lot more! We are fortunate that Pais has given us this, and several other wonderful biographies;-- the one about Albert Einstein stands out! It is especially fortunate that he has chosen to write for the general public. I can't think of anyone who did, or possibly could have done it better. His writing is captivating, and unique in its recreation of the times, and the social context of the scientific events. Pais further succeeds magnificently in bringing to life the many colorful personalities. This includes the young physicists born in Europe around 1900 who arrived in Copenhagen in the 1920ties to work with Bohr, some later to win the Nobel Prize,-- how he became a father figure to some of them,- Heisenberg, for example. And there are the other players,

Albert Einstein early on, and Pais himself later, in the drama of quantum physics of the Twentieth Century. Even if you might perhaps not be scientifically inclined, and if you choose to skip the physics sections, I don't think you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars QM a la Bohr.......2000-11-27

Historical description of the development of nuclear and quantum physics, especially from the viewpoint of Bohr and colleagues, many who Pais worked with. Provides a non-technical description of many of the principles of modern physics.

Part cookbook, part primer of Chinese medicine, Nina Simonds's A Spoonful of Ginger offers dietary advice, herbal home remedies, and lively, unintimidating Asian recipes for the American home cook. Try Braised Duck with Tangerine Peel and Sweet Potato as a cure for high blood pressure. Baked Black Bean Shrimp might be just the dish to get you over that bout of depression. Simonds presents the ailing reader with concoctions to relieve everything from hangovers to frostbite.

And lovers of fine food need not despair--medical advice is kept brief, presumably to make room for more delicious recipes. For example, Steamed Fish with Black Mushrooms and Prosciutto makes no claims to cure anything but hunger. And any volume on health food that features a substantial section on pork (check out Spicy Pork Tenderloin with Leeks and Fennel) can hardly be called austere or old-fashioned. With tastes from all over Asia represented, from Indian curries to Japanese miso, these 200 dishes are tasty riffs on Chinese themes that should cure even the most jaded of palates. --David Kalil

        Book Description

From Nina Simonds, the best-selling authority on Chinese cooking, here is a groundbreaking cookbook based on the Asian philosophy of food as health-giving. The 200 delectable recipes she offers not only taste superb but also have specific healing properties according to the accumulated wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine.

The emphasis is on what's good for you, not bad for you. It's primarily a question of balance: eating in harmony with the seasons; countering yin, or cooling, foods (spinach, tomatoes, asparagus, lettuce, seafood) with yang, or hot, foods (ginger, garlic, hot peppers, beef) and neutralizers like rice and noodles.

Feeling tired? Ms. Simonds offers a spoonful of ginger in her hearty chicken soup. A cold coming on? Try Cantonese-Style Tofu (to sweat out the cold) in Black Bean Sauce (healing to the lungs and digestion). Your immune system needs building up? Wild mushrooms (a cancer deterrent) are tossed with soba noodles (a stress reliever). Concerned about cholesterol and clogged arteries? Instead of giving up all the foods you love, indulge in Yin-Yang Shrimp with Hawthorn Dipping Sauce.

Whatever your health concerns may be, you will find the right restorative and satisfying recipes. Babies and toddlers have special needs, as do adolescents, pregnant and menopausal women, the aging--and all of these are addressed with specific recommendations. The wealth of information Nina Simonds offers here derives from her extensive research into the evidence amassed over three thousand years by practitioners of Chinese medicine, and from her interviews with leading experts today in food as medicine, who offer their firsthand testimony.

It is all here in this remarkable book. But, above all, it is the range of dishes, from the exotic to the earthy, that will convince you that you can enjoy marvelous food every day--relishing its good taste and knowing it is good for you.

        5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook.......2007-06-25

I love this cookbook! The blurb on the jacket by Nora Pouillon says it better than I could. "Recipes that not only are full of flavor and taste delicious but most of all are good for up - balanced, energizing, and nurturing. Nina Simonds teaches us about the importance of yin and yang in our diets and show us that food is fundamental to our lives and our health. Food is our daily medicine and Nina's book helps us make this connections again." And not only are the recipes fairly simple and the ingredients easy to find, this cookbook is fun to browse and read.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Cookbook.......2006-03-10

I was so excited to try the recipes in this book, and after the first couple was disappointed, but kept trying several more. The ingredients seemed interesting, but the meals were very bland.

4 out of 5 stars Good Asian food that you can manage on a weeknight.......2005-10-27

I've had this cookbook for a number of years, and I freely admit that I haven't made every recipe in the book. There are some dishes, however, that have become standbys, such as the saucy ground turkey wrapped in lettuce leaves. (In fact, I just grabbed the book so I could make those lettuce wraps as my contribution to a potluck Halloween party -- everyone says, "This is better than PF Changs!")

It's not that these are the most authentic, knock-your-socks-off recipes. If I'm ready to spend a couple of hours putting together an awesome Asian meal, I'll turn to Barbara Tropp or to The Key To Chinese Cooking. However, the recipes in this book are solidly GOOD, with an underlying sense of healthful eating, and many recipes are vegetarian (or nearly so).

However, what makes this cookbook a winner is that the recipes are straightforward enough to make during the week, after an exhausting day at work (when something to balance your energy sounds most appealing -- doesn't "hot and sour salmon with greens" sound restorative?).

Plus, there's a good chance you have most of the ingredients you need in the house already, and can whip together something more interesting than "maybe I'll just open a can of chili." That's how the book falls open to the recipe for chile chicken with cashews -- I usually have a bag of frozen chicken breasts, a can of water chestnuts, scallions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, cashews... it doesn't ask for a heck of a lot more. A few minutes of rummaging around in the refrigerator, and I have a meal that sounds like I planned it.

Also, the healthy stuff -- yin-yang, and advice about food-based remedies (mussels are good to strengthen the kidneys, for instance) -- is enjoyable and educational.

        Nice book. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The single best compilation of Asian recipes.......2003-02-27

Very versatile and informative. It has a little Eastern philosophy mixed in for those who are interested (I am not).

I consider myself pretty strong as amateur cooks go (favorite book to cook from is the French Laundry cookbook), and am now able to include many Asian themes in my cooking.

        Favorite recipes:
        * Cinnamon-braised tofu with spinach (this will keep your guests guessing for about 10 minutes about what the heck they're eating)
        * Poached pears in a sweet ginger sauce (not the actual recipe name, but that's what it was)
        * Yin-yang shrimp (absolutely astounding)

        Book Description

Now in brilliant four-color hard cover, this benchmark, well-illustrated text gives students, "wherever they may live in the world," sufficient botanical understanding of vascular plants. A comprehensive new edition, it references new implications from the XVIth International Botanical Congress in St. Louis. It has been written to teach basic botanical facts as applied to vascular plants; relates these facts to systematic principles; shows how systematic principles are important to contemporary botanical and environmental issues from a global perspective; and allows the student access to computer botanical images. The newest version of the classic University of Wisconsin "Photoatlas of the Vascular Plants" CD-ROM, with more than 4,500 color photographs, is included INCLUDED FREE.

Author Dennis Woodland of Andrews University has collaborated with Robert R. Kowal, Kenneth J. Sytsma, and Mike Clayton (University of Wisconsin at Madison) and Marilyn J. Ward (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) to produce the color 4,500-image CD of the 260+ plant families discussed.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent Botany resource!.......2006-01-24

This book is an excellent introduction with a lot of valuable information about the study of botany. It is useful to both beginners and people with extensive botanical knowledge. It is definitely not light reading, but an excellent reference for anyone who spends a lot of time concerning themselves with all types of plants. The botanical glossary, diagrams, and family descriptions are particulary useful. This also makes a great companion to a technical botanical identification book. There is also an excellent history of botany but the straightforward explantions of the vast language of botany makes it super handy.

I purchased it for a two-hundred level college botany course and hope to continue to use it as a professional.

Whether the result of fertility drugs, an "older mother" (more likely to experience a multiple ovulation), or simply the luck of the draw, multiple babies pose multiple challenges. Journalist Pamela Patrick Novotny's comprehensive exploration of life with twins--or more--provides page after page of myth-busting, educational, and highly supportive information.

Not meant for the expectant parent, this text cuts right to the chase: the babies have been born--it's time to rally. Novotny opens by discussing transitions, likening pregnancy, delivery, and homecoming to a three-ringed circus. With a deft combination of coaching tones and facts galore, she addresses each issue thoroughly and insightfully, and offers excellent suggestions for coming to terms with the many changes. Novotny seems to target her book to the doubtful, those who may feel unusually overwhelmed by the prospect of caring for more than one baby at a time, or those who need help surfacing from the murky pool of postpartum depression. Troubleshooting, planning, finding alternatives--these terms and themes can be found throughout her text, with plenty of positive results. Most helpful are the excellent chapters on mothercare, multiples' developing sense of identity and myths surrounding their genetic influences, and "Feeling the Changes: Fathers and Families." Absolutely packed with valuable suggestions, case studies, facts, and references, this book should rank quite high with parents of multiples. Team it with When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads for a complete pre- and postnatal library. --Liane Thomas

              3 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2007-01-19

I was hoping for more practicle information. This book is good for entertainment because of it's format. It has lots of stories and personal examples of other parents with twins. There is practicle information, but for the most part it's a confidence booster.

2 out of 5 stars Good to look at but leave it in the store........2004-08-31

I did enjoy seeing the cute pics.. however the this book is rather out dated with info. It is filled with family info but not good for a mom to be or a mom in the first few years. It does have a few funny answers to the questions that moms of multiples seem to get a lot! It was fun to look at and read for the enjoyment of it..

1 out of 5 stars The Joy of Twins and Other Multiple Births.......2004-02-11

My husband bought me this book while I was on bedrest awaiting the arrival of our twin girls. I was eager to soak in as much info as possible before they arrived. What I first noticed was how dated the photos inside looked and as I read on I realized that the book was orignally written in the 1980's with perhaps a few later revisions. The stats that were quoted about things like twin birth rates, mothers returning to the work force and even baby gear were terribly outdated. Like some of the other readers, I did think some of the basic twin information was somewhat useful, but I was definitely disappointed that it was not more current.

              1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE MONEY ON NON-EXPERT ADVICE.......2002-03-05

As an expectant mother of boy/girl twins, I am dying to read anything on the topic of being pregnant with twins and the issues you face once they have finally arrived after the nine long months of anticipation. At this point, both my husband and I have read this book and have found it to be not worth the money we spent!
Hindsight being 20/20, maybe we would have reconsidered the purchase of this book had we noticed that the author is not a doctor or psychologist, rather an journalist who seems to revel in writing pseudo-psycho babble on child rearing.
After I was done reading this tome, I was left in tears fearing I would be a disastrous parent because I am not planning on breast feeding (personal choice I have a right to!), I am planning on going back to work after the twins birth, ad nauseum with things Ms. Novotny told me would make me a bad parent.
The book overall doesn't have the tone/manner of being a book of 2002, let alone one from 2000. If you clearly look at the pictures incorporated, you see adorable children in strollers, cribs, etc. that would horrify the CPSP (Consumer Products Safety Commission) as they clearly do not represnt products that are up to code with todays safety standards. (This as well should have been a clue, while I was perusing it in the bookstore!)
Overall, I felt my money was wasted and that I should have spent my [money] on something cute for the babies to wear.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you like pictures...........2001-11-13

This book didn't provide much useful information on how to survive the daily life with twins. It's focus is mainly the emotional health of the family-- which *is* important. But I was wanting a book that would help me deal with the trivial things we take for granted before having twins. It is a nicely laid out book-- I loved the pictures. But the information *I* wanted just wasn't there.

5 out of 5 stars Well written account of an interesting man.......2004-06-17

I began reading 'Partial to Home' in an attempt to gain some background info on Timberlake for a press release about the upcoming exhibit of his work here at the App. Cultural Museum. I found that, unlike some autobiographies, it was hard to put down. Every aspect of Timberlake's life (his family, his upbringing, his ancestors, his artwork) was remarkably intriguing, and you really feel as though you come to know the man behind the "empire" that has evolved from his passionate love of painting. The situations and people encountered along his way, along with his keen ability to express his feelings for each, create an account of his life that will linger with me for quite some time. It leaves you with a comfortable, warm feeling of loving (and keeping in touch with) those around you and the satisfaction that comes from accomplishing your dreams.

5 out of 5 stars YOU DON'T NEED A DEGREE TO APPRECIATE BOB TIMBERLAKE.......2000-02-08

This is an extremely readable book about the popular artist, Bob Timberlake. If you are from North Carolina, you will recognize many of the locations he and Jerry Bledsoe write about. If you are not from NC, you are welcome to "set a spell" and watch a boy grow up in a small-town world not unlike Mayberry (yes, there were really towns like that in NC). Surprisingly, Bob was not born with a paintbrush in his hand: this is something he happened into as an adult. Many of the seemingly simple events of his life converged to make him the artist he is today. You will learn what makes Bob Timberlake stand out from the pack and the values that keep him grounded.

This is the updated third edition of an atlas first published in 1998. During the past six years, the transportation network of the metropolitan area of Tokyo has changed a good deal. In the case of the subway system, lines have been extended, and some rapid-transit lines have been added, so
code numbers for each station are given in our atlas for foreign travelers to identify them easily. In addition, as a result of urban development in areas such as Roppongi, Shinagawa, and Shiodome, quite a few new company buildings, stores, and hotels have appeared. These developments are also
                covered in this updated edition.

                - 21 area maps of Metropolitan Tokyo (42 pages) showing not only chome numbers but also block numbers (banchi).
                - 18 detailed maps of Central Tokyo (30 pages) to guide the reader even to numbered subway station entrances.
                - An additional 7 maps of central Yokohama and Kawasaki and access maps to 3 U.S. military bases (Yokosuka, Yokota and Zama).
                - Comprehensive index: More than 3,600 entries of town and station names, as well as major organizations and buildings, provide the user with easy access to all destinations.

This was the most useful thing I brought to Tokyo. I used it every day I was there, and the bilingual feature came in handy considering many fare charts and train stations don't have the Anglicized spellings of routes/stations prominently displayed.

It was most useful when I found my train line unexpectedly delayed/indefinitely shut-down one evening and had to find my way to the next station to get home. Or when I thought Yoyogi Park looked like a short walk from the top of the Met. Gov't Building and took off on foot, only to get a very interesting route through several wards before finding the park. Even though I was quite off course, the map was accurate, reflected the landmarks (good luck finding a named street), and made getting around easy. I got lost but could always reference the map and find my way home.

My only criticism is that it did not go into much detail beyond central Tokyo and I spent some time in outlying areas. Obviously it's a large city and hard to pack so much into a still-portable book, but something of the suburbs would be nice in future editions.

4 out of 5 stars At the advice of others.......2007-08-24

I recently went to Tokyo. Before I got there I thought I'd be lost if there was no way to figure out the somewhat strange addressing system in use there. Well, as it happened, you can get lost just the same (especially if you're looking for an establishment that closed two years ago!). I think the map is quite good but one has to keep in mind that if one is lost with the map, it's as good as not having a map if you can't speak Japanese.

5 out of 5 stars Don't even think about going to Tokyo without it. .......2007-08-16

Quite simply, this atlas is worth its weight in gold. There are few street address systems more confusing than the Japanese variety, streets are rarely labeled (and even then, if you don't read Japanese, you're usually sunk), and guidebook maps, as I know from rueful experience, look precise and then require half an hour circling several look-alike blocks in confusion.

To all these problems, the Bilingual Atlas is the solution. Streets are labeled in Japanese and in romaji, block numbers are clearly designated, shrines, temples, hotels, stores and almost every conceivable point of interest are clearly labled, and the maps even mark where the various subway station exits deposit commuters. The subway and train maps are comprehensive and as easy to understand as anything you'll find.

My only complaint? The pages aren't completely waterproof, as I found out the hard way one night in Shinjuku.

5 out of 5 stars thank god we bought this book.......2007-08-12

this is an indispensible guide for tokyo. do yourself a favor and buy this book if you plan to be in tokyo longer than a week. we would be lost without it. hell is coming back as a tokyo mailman!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Maps, but heavy to carry........2007-07-16

While I did use this book a lot (I had the paperback version), I found it heavy to carry. What I did most days was refer to it and cross referance with my paper map, plan our days travels and then leave it back at our apt. I brought my paper map everywhere.
I like to tear out the sections of the travel book that I will need for the day to cut down on weight and bulk. Since we needed umbrellas(it rains a lot in Tokyo), Jackets and water bottles, camara, hats and maps it was all a bit cumbersom.

This atlas, the only one of its kind to provide place-names in both English and Japanese, is an invaluable tool for foreign residents of Japan, and an indispensable, handy companion for travelers. The atlas features: - 21 large-scale maps of the regions of Japan, including Greater Tokyo and the Kanto area, the Greater Osaka Area, and almost all of the officially registered Japanese cities, towns and villages. This atlas includes all the changes. - 19 maps of major metropolitan areas, from Naha in Okinawa to Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nagoya, Tsukuba, Sapporo, and many others. - 7 maps featuring notable tourist and resort areas, including Fuji-Hakone-Izu, Nara, Kamakura, Nikko, etc. - 9 transportation maps, including road and intercity railway maps, Tokyo and Osaka subway and rail maps, and even major domestic airline routes. - 12 thematic maps, indicating natural parks, world heritage, special historic spots, Ramsar convention entry areas, ceramic kiln areas, etc. - A comprehensive index. - A list of embassies, consulates, and sister cities.

                3 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful.......2007-03-28

It's great to have maps with both Kanji and Roman alphabets. That is very useful for navigating in Japan when one doesn't read Japanese. But the maps are small and not detailed enough to be used by cyclists, which was my hope when I purchased this atlas. It does have some subway maps at the back, which are practical. I think this atlas has to be used with a more detailed Japanese-language atlas to be really useful to anyone (cyclists or drivers) interested in using roads smaller than the major highways.

                5 out of 5 stars Whether it's used as a take-along tourist's tote or a library addition, it's a winner........2006-11-07

You'd expect an atlas format to be large and oversized - not JAPAN ATLAS: it's the size of a regular book, which lends to easy shelving, yet it is the only one of its kind to provide place names in both English and Japanese, offering over twenty large-scale maps of Japan's various regions, 19 maps of major urban areas, and other smaller maps of roads and tourist areas. Whether it's used as a take-along tourist's tote or a library addition, it's a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of maps........2006-08-10

When I ordered this book, I was expecting a more traditional atlas, with geographic information, etc., but this is simply a collection of maps. there is no explanatory text. But there is a table of contents and an index.

There are 5 sections: Area Maps; City Maps; Sight-Seeing Maps; Transportation Maps; and Thematic Maps. The area, city, and transportation maps are self-explanatory, but the reader could have trouble figuring out what is in the other sections. For example, the sight-seeing maps have lots of places indicaed in red, but there is no indiccaion of just why they are noteworthy. In the thematic maps, several of the themes may not be apparent. For example, I was baffled by the map labeled "Ramsar Convention Area Areas and had to do a Google seaqrch to figure it out. There are also some basic typos in English that aven a novice copy editor should have caught. "Marchent homes" for "merchent homes," or "histric" for "historic."

In all, though, if you want a handy, very portable map collection , with place names in romaji and kana/kanji, then this is worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars BACKPACKED JAPAN WITH THIS ATLAS !!.......2006-06-16

This atlas contains complete details on navigating all of the cities of Japan: train, plane and automobile. If you have a compass with adjusted declination (compass is optional) and this guide, you will be able to get everywhere. You will not need another map/atlas at all ! I successfully navigated Japan alone using only this guide. I traveled between and inside Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Arashiyama and Tokyo. Every train stop written in English and diagramed to scale. Stuck in a temple on the side of a mountain in Kyoto ? rely on this map and you will find home ! This book is not a guide book and is not meant to be. It provides the information necessary to navigate. If you know your source and your destination, then this book will provide the path you need !! My japanese level was roughly Level 4 (JLPT), I am comfortable navigating subways in NYC, and I navigated alone for 15 days in Japan. Highly recommended !! Anyone who does not give this book 5 stars, does not understand the purpose of an atlas !

2 out of 5 stars Dated and poorly printed.......2003-07-30

While getting ready for a two-month stint in Japan, I found an entry for this book and it looked helpful. When I received it, I was disappointed in the quality of the printing. Not only does it look cheap, but it is also difficult to read.

When I got to Japan, I also realized that it is more than a bit dated. I have been traveling for more than a month now and have stopped using it. Granted, the cities are still in the same place on the maps, but the city maps need to be updated and corrected. This book was put together in 1991. My bad choice here. In the States, I would never depend on maps over 12 years old.

This is just my experience. Take it for what it's worth.

                1 out of 5 stars Not useful.......2003-06-16

I am an American who has been living and working in Japan for two years and have gone on many road trips here, but I did not use this book at all. It has a nice detailed bilingual driving map of Tokyo, but you are better off taking the trains since they are faster than driving in Tokyo's traffic. It has a nice map of the train lines in major cities but you can get maps of the train lines in English for free at many of the major train stations. So don't wast your money. I did most of my driving through rural areas and country side where it makes more sense to drive, but this atlas did not give good details of the roads in those areas. Many of the roads in this atlas did not even have labels and were not clearly marked. Instead I use maps that were given to me for free from the Japanese government.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Atlas for a Traveler in Japan.......2000-03-28

I travel to Japan every 5th week or so to sell my company's semiconductors to various manufacturers spread out all over Japan. This Atlas is terrific for English-only speakers like me, as it has all the Japanese characters next to the English names, which is essential when navigating the train stations off the main lines. This Atlas has good city maps for all the major destinations and the touristy sites are also well located. A nice feature is the very good transportation maps in the back showing the courses of all the major train lines. The dimensions (0.54 x 8.57 x 6.21") make it easy to carry at all times in my computer bag too. Finally, even though it is a paperback, the binding is robust, so this book has stood up to all the abuse I've given it.

I bought this book in a rush while preparing for a trip, figuring I'd replace it once in country. I didn't bother as this Atlas has had everything I needed and more.

                5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........1997-11-19

I lived in Japan for a year and found the bilingual atlas to be invaluable, especially for traveling in less touristy areas where the signs are not transliterated in romaji (roman script.) I highly recommend this book for anyone who is going to spend any time traveling around Japan.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book I keep in my backpack.......2001-02-05

When getting around Tokyo, this is *the* map book to use. It has detailed street maps of Tokyo, with special extra high detail pages for a number of popular areas. You can find your way to a specific address with these maps - down the block number or sometimes building number. The exits of subway stations are labeled. And the maps contain both Kanji and Roman type, so you can easily show it to Japanese people to help find your destination.

The typography of these maps is very clear and the layout of the book is very nicely organized. I haven't found anything better for getting around Tokyo.

The larger Tokyo Metropolitan Atlas by Shobunsha is also quite useful, covers more areas west and south of Tokyo proper , but is somewhat larger to carry, and doesn't have the detail in the "blow up" maps of popular areas in the city.

5 out of 5 stars Goes everywhere with me...........2000-07-28

I first ran into this book in 1990, when I made my first trip to Japan on business. Since then, I have had 3 editions, and, as I now live in Tokyo, my dog-earred copy travels in my briefcase or backpack everywhere I go.

MOST of Tokyo has signs using Roman characters (romaji), but, there are still some train stations, or street signs that are in kanji characters only.

Lost? You can use this map to "match" the characters, even if you cannot read the kanji! Every station, street, river, ward, neighborhood is printed both in romaji and kanji. There are train maps and subway maps, with banks, hotels, and other places well marked.

I invest in each new edition right away, and I give this book as a gift to each of my friends who come visit me in Tokyo, as well as each new ex-patriot who arrives in my office!

5 out of 5 stars Turns a Tokyo visit into a meaningful adventure........2000-07-09

This Tokyo (and Yokohama) atlas is a highly focussed explorer's guide to what is surely the most difficult-to-navigate metropolis on earth.

Tokyo's system of three hyphenated numbers signifying the location of an address will strike the westerner as highly irrational, and is often an alientating concept for even the regular visitor.

The Tokyo City Atlas, a comprehensively bilingual city guide, features a foolproof system of detail and large-scale maps with every city block clearly marked. Japanese address-finding could not be made easier -- this is the one book I wish I had taken with me on my first visits to Tokyo, and it is the one that will travel with me on every future visit to this most exciting of cities.
