Book Description
George Starkey—chymistry tutor to Robert Boyle, author of immensely popular alchemical treatises, and probably early America's most important scientist—reveals in these pages the daily laboratory experimentation of a seventeenth-century alchemist.
The editors present in this volume transcriptions of Starkey's texts, their translations, and valuable commentary for the modern reader. Dispelling the myth that alchemy was an irrational enterprise, this remarkable collection of laboratory notebooks and correspondence reveals the otherwise hidden methodologies of one of the seventeenth century's most influential alchemists.

Excellent and helpful.......2006-06-06
This is a great book regarding addiction issues and there root causes. It is packed with great information which can be utilized immediately to help with personal issues of all kinds. CC
Healing!.......2003-07-19
As a minister, and a student of A Course in Miracles since 1994, I found this book very inspiring and helpful in uncovering all that is addiction. It is not what you think. We used this book in early 2003 as a basis of study for our study group. The entire group received so much insight into their own addictive patterns and many were able to release so much to the Light and Love of God.
OUTSTANDING!.......2001-02-05
I read an excerpt from this book at an on-line site. I ordered the book. I started reading it the same night I received it. I thought I would only read a few pages. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. The questions/situations Dr. Jampolsky posed was me. It was like looking in a mirror. The book offers lots of life situations/problems, and wonderful suggestions to solve them. This book was a "mind" saver for me. And I like the other reviewer, use it as my Bible.
Healing the Addictive Mind - A MUST READ........1999-09-22
When I found this book, I was involved in a dysfunctional relationship (the latest of many) with a man who had severe drug problems and no inclination to give them away. Like me he was in pain, although neither of us really understood the full implication of this, and drugs were his way to escape. I read the back cover of the book, and what I read told me I could help him by curing his substance addiction. I would never have bought it to help myself. I felt beyond help! My escape was focussing on his problem!
I bought the book, took it home to read and had the shock of my life! This book wasn't about drugs, it was about me!! I cried like I would never stop, but with a strange sense of relief underlying the pain of having all my hurtful thought patterns thrown before me. It wasn't just me, someone else KNEW! Then I began scribbling my interpretations into the margins, and being more honest with/about myself with the guidance of this book than ever before.
Since then, I have loaned the book to as many people who will read it, read it and re read it and updated my feelings in the margins. It reminds me who I am and where I am going, and it has become in a sense my Bible! I still get scared about what life holds for me, but this bit of fortification makes it that much easier to carry on - an in the way i NEED to, not that which has become habit.
I am not one for reading self help books, as they all state the obvious and tell me nothing, or confuse me with in depth theories. This book is different. It is very easy to read, very easily understood... it just makes sense. If I were able, I would buy a copy of this book for everyone! It should be standard issue.
I found this site looking for more information on Lee Jampolsky. I admire his insight, am so grateful for his huge contribution to my life and only wish I was able to thank him in some way. It takes a very short time to read this book, I do suggest you at least look at it. What I believe you will gain will be far greater than anything else you could do in the time you take to explore this book.
Share your smiles with anyone, but never rely on anyone for them.
Alison.

Now that the popularity of alternative medicine has made just about everyone aware of the health connection between mind and body, it seems like a fine time to bring back this book, originally written by the late psychiatrist Caprio and newly revised by Caroline Miller, dean of academic studies at the American Institute of Hypnotherapy. To the authors, self-hypnosis is an ideal way to reach a state of relaxation and concentration that will allow you to send healing messages to your body and really get it to listen. The easy-to-follow text includes several methods of hypnotic induction, and instructs readers on using the process to lose weight, sleep better, overcome depression, improve their sex lives, slow the aging process, and conquer other health difficulties that are now widely acknowledged to depend quite a bit on subconscious mental states. The authors acknowledge that hypnosis is often misunderstood, and they devote quite a bit of effort to overcoming misconceptions and getting readers to take it seriously as a healing force. --Ben Kallen, Personal Growth editor
Customer Reviews:
much too wordy and patronizing.......2005-02-03
This book is mainly trying to convince the reader that hypnosis isn't bad for you. I happened to assume that already, that's why I bought the book.
As to the actual content - unfortunately never got that far. I read about half the book, got bored and ordered a few others.
If you are serious about hypnosis - check out the booklist on brainchanger.com:
http://www.brainchanger.com/generic57.html
in particular: "The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism" By: Ormond McGill. There are quite a few others and many on NLP on this list as well.
Very easy to read yet very effective.......2000-08-02
This book was an easier read than many hypnosis books on the market. There are also many relaxation scripts to help get beginners started. I have been exposed to many types of hypnosis practices and I must say that I like self-hypnosis the best, but I do feel that some exposure to a professional can be very beneficial. I have been using this book as an aid for about 4 months and I must say the changes are indescribable. I have lost weight (a lot!), become more disciplined in my studies and have a more rewarding relationship with my boyfriend of 4 years. Also, since the suggestions are my own that I am giving, then I am not as prone to accept suggestions from others and as result, I am more aware of negative energy amongst other people and don't take it on. This is a great book and in conjuction with other tools such as relaxation, some exposure to personal therapy, it can/will have amazing effects and the that is the truth!
Healing yourself with self-hypnosis.......2000-06-20
If you care about yourself and well being, this book is for you! The book is easy to read and enjoyable. You can apply self-hypnosis to almost anything in your daily life. There's no magic in hypnosis, it's all about the positive attitude and response. The book in general has very good tips on how to relax and have a better way to live.

A great intro to the kitchen, and a keeper.......2006-04-25
My Mom bought me this cookbook when I first moved out on my own. It isn't written with a lot of cooking jargon that might frighten off a new cook, and instead says things like "chuck it all together and mix it up" which is much less intimidating than "fold" :)
I now am a decent cook, but I still refer back to it fairly frequently - the recipes are good, and easy! It also has menu plans for "impressing the ladies" -- although I am a woman, so I guess I could impress the guys. :)
Highly recommend it
Set my 1st Copy on Fire.......2000-04-22
I've enjoyed your cookbook "The Bachelor's Guide". I am 29 years old. I've owned a home for the past 20 months, and am enjoying your cookbook. In December I accidentally set my 1st copy of "The Bachelor's Guide" on fire, my mother gave me a new stove for Christmas. I always set the cookbook on the stove while cooking (NOT ANY MORE). I turned on the wrong element. I had thrown hamburger in the frying pan (I was cooking "Hobbley Cobbley" p. 44) I turned away to wash my hands at the sink. Out of the corner of my eye I saw smoke - I first thought it was just the element buring off a previous spill. That was not the case, it was the cookbook! I then threw the cookbook on the floor and started jumping on the book to stop the fire. Later that day I called the bookstore to order another copy. I burnt my first copy of "The Bachelor's Guide" - does this mean I am no longer entitled to the Diploma at the back of the book HA HA? This past week I received my second copy of "The Bachelor's Guide". I've continued making my favorites and trying new recipes.
P.S. My sister will be married for 13 years on June 6th, 2000 with 2 children 6 years and 9 years old, and she has heard me talk so much about "The Bachelor's Guide" she borrowed my cookbook. I bought her a copy of "The Bachelor's Guide to Ward Off Starvation" so she will have a copy of her own.
Ideal Cookbook for Men -Great Food, Lots of Laughs.......2000-04-14
The cartoons and recipe chapter headings alone are enough reason to buy this super cookbook. Look up 20+ Ways to Cook Hamburger and Career-Path Casseroles - well worth the price of admission. These recipes are written in an off-the-wall style, but they really work. I gave this book to my two sons when they moved out to go to university and to work, and they loved it. The recipes range from very basic, boiled eggs and Macaroni and Cheese, to reasonably sophisticated but still very simple, Baked Rotini and Coq au Vin. I have friends who have bought this book for their kitchen-illiterate husbands when going on business trips or holidays, or even going into the hospital for an operation. Several women I know have also given this cookbook to male friends who have recently been divorced or widowed, it's been a lifesaver - no exaggeration.

Customer Reviews:
Just wonderful!.......2003-03-07
I really like Elian's artwork in needlepoint. She has a good sense of combining colours to bring out the most beautiful floral display. This book was not a disappointment. There are already a few projects that I would like to complete some day. It really is one of my favorite needlepoint book.
Book Description
Midlife is one of the most trying times in a marriage. Pressures come from within--as anxiety, boredom, and restlessness tempt us to seek fulfillment in affairs or radical lifestyle changes. And pressure comes from outside, too, as growing children, aging parents, health concerns and financial strains make it harder than ever to focus on each other. This guide provides compelling, commonsense advice for couples who want to stay the course--not only to maintain the marriage bond, but to strengthen it.
"The Brodys write from professional and personal experience, with authority, compassion, and humor, of the difficulties of marriage at midlife. Their book covers a lot of territory, from sexuality to aging parents and from coping with retirement to spiritual growth. The suggestions are sensible and straightforward. I recommend this book."-- Mary Pipher, Ph.D., author of Reviving Ophelia and Another Country
"There are always challenges in marriage, and midlife brings a host of new ones. Steve and Cathy Brody are your personal advance team, throwing up red flags and leaving markers along the way. With the benefit of their experience and advice, you should be able to avoid even the best-hidden traps."-- Frank Farley, Ph.D., former President, American Psychological Association
"A must-read for all husbands and wives, and the professionals who work with them."-- Linda Lewis Griffith, M.A., nationally syndicated columnist
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Overview of Midlife Marriage.......2000-09-17
Cathy and Steve Brody have put on paper a near encyclopedic reference for all the skills one needs and pitfalls one should avoid during the midlife marriage. Most vulnerable to disaster, the midlife marriage sustains the blows of empty nest, mid-life crisis, and general wear and tear of the physical aging process. A must have handbook for anyone wanting to stay vital in a long term relationship. For people who already know their problems and need deeper work, a different text or personal therapy will be helpful. For those who need to spot problem areas or who just need reinforcement, this is the book for you.
The Brody's are the best!.......2000-09-13
Thanks to Steve & Cathy Brody for your insightful sharing & strategies to help cope with my midlife's issues, and there are many! What a great support "group" feeling in listening (reading) about their lives and how my own challenging life has been better understood. The kids are gone now & my husband and I are ready for that "renewed marriage". We highly recommend this to anyone who wants to live happily ever after.
Baby Boomers, Midlife, and Staying Married.......2000-09-09
Renew Your Marriage at Midlife is an easy read and an excellent idea now that baby boomers are reaching their middle years. Steve and Cathy Brody describe their individual experiences and provide excellent professional advice on topics that are certain to confound couples when they realize that their relationship is changing in ways that they had never imagined. What happens to couples when their kids leave home? When original expectations of marriage begin to slip away? When sexual relationships wane? Steve and Cathy Brody have written an exciting midlife primer that responds to these and other difficult questions. I recommend it highly.
I highly recommend this book.......2000-09-09
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! The Brodys are very insightful and use many personal anecdotes from their own marriage. This is the best book on the marital relationship that I've read yet. I highly recommend it!
As Good As Oprah Said It Was.......2000-09-09
After watching the Brodys on Oprah, and seeing her plug their book, I figured I'd give it a try. It is terrific! As a woman in midlife, I'm finding it very helpful with my marriage. Our communication has improved, and even our sex life is now more satisfying. Well done Brodys!! Thank You!!

Book Description
In March 2000, a suitcase arrived at a children's Holocaust education center in Tokyo, Japan. On the outside, in white paint, were these words: Hana Brady, May 16, 1931, and Waisenkindthe German word for orphan. Children who saw the suitcase on display were full of questions. Who was Hana Brady? What happened to her? They wanted Fumiko Ishioka, the center's curator, to find the answers.
In a suspenseful journey, Fumiko searches for clues across Europe and North America. The mystery of the suitcase takes her back through seventy years, to a young Hana and her family, whose happy life in a small Czech town was turned upside down by the invasion of the Nazis.
Customer Reviews:
A living account of the holocaust.......2007-04-23
This is a very different account of the holocaust than I have ever read before. It is a living account of the holocaust and how it still affects our lives today. This book brings the holocaust into the present by telling the story of a Japanese woman searching for a girl who was lost nearly 60 years ago. I loved this story and wonder how many more stories of survival, hope and faith we can find if we just dig a little deeper to unbury a past that is not always pleasant but that we can always learn from.
The Best - Reviewed by Kenzie.......2007-04-20
Has there ever been something you found that you wanted to learn more about? This happened to Fumiko Ishioka in Hana's Suitcase by Karen Levine. Hana's Suitcase is an informational book about the Holocaust and the sad story of what happened to over 6 million Jewish people.
Hana's Suitcase is about a young Jewish girl named Hana who lives in Czechoslovakia with her family in the 1930's and 1940's. It is also about Fumiko Ishioka in Japan and a group of kids called Small Wings who find a suitcase from Auschwitz (a German concentration camp) with the name Hana Brady on it. Fumiko and all the Small Wings are eager to learn about Hana and her life, death, and family.
Hana's story begins when she is a pampered girl who lives in Nove Mesto, Czechoslovakia. As Hitler's troops march into other parts of Czechoslovakia, Hana is barely affected. She still has all her rights and freedom. Soon after, Hitler and his troops marched into the rest of Czechoslovakia changing the Brady's life forever.
Hana's Suitcase is an amazing book that I think everyone should read. It teaches us all more about history, who these people were, and the pure evil that attacked them. The story might be sad, but it shows us just what happened to the 6 million Jews who suffered Hitler's wrath.
Hana's Suitcase.......2006-08-05
This children's book (age 10+)is an engaging story, almost a mystery/detective story about a Czech girl named Hana who dies in the Holocaust. It is an unusual story because it begins in Tokyo with the curator of a newly created Holocaust museum who is curious about the name on a suitcase from Auschwitz. She wants the people of Japan to understand the story of the Holocaust, especially children. The children wanted to know about Hana. The book has many photographs of Hana and her family. Each chapter answered questions in my mind but then created even more questions. Who was Hana? How did the author get the photographs? Did she survive the Holocaust? What was Hana like?
VERY GOOD BOOK ITS A HAVE TO READ!!!.......2006-03-04
i read this book and it was very emotional for me. I learned a lot about the holocaust and i got inside views from people in the holocaust themselfs. I loved this book and its a have to read!
I would recommend it to anyone.
Hana's Suitcase.......2005-08-24
I was enchanted reading this remarkable true story. The resourcefulness, tenacity, andthe ability to survive under the the circumstances never ceases to amaze me. The final chapter was a source of joy for me.
