    Book Description

Robert Southey, English poet laureate and Peer of Lord Admiral Nelson, vividly describes the strong nature of Nelson's character and the atmosphere of his times. Son of a minister, and not of strong body, young Nelson ships off to sea at the ripe age of twelve years old. He becomes ultimately one of the great naval leaders and strategists of all time, and one of England's undisputed revered heroes. electricUmbrella Publishing is proud to bring this masterpiece of British biography, first published in 1843, back into print.

4 out of 5 stars A very, very, very old book. But beautifully written and fun.......2003-06-02

If you want to read the best of the new books on Lord Nelson, then without argument it is Dr Joel Hayward's outstanding and unconventional "For God and Glory: Lord Nelson and his way of war".

But if you want to add a respected classic to your collection of Nelson works, you'll need Southey. The book narrates Nelson's life in a relaxing fashion without much analysis. After all, its not a scholarly book. But the story it tells is still considered generally solid and reliable. When read alongside Oman, Mahan, and the new books by Dr Colin White and Hayward, you'll have Nelson's life down-pat.

My only gripe is that Soutyhey's work glosses over the bad times in Nelson's life; times when the seaman did foolish or wantonly violent acts. These ere so out of keeping with the great deeds done by Britain's true hero that Southey should have tried to make some sense of them.

Still, with Southey you know what you are getting: a timeless classic which did wonders, in its own time, to tell Englishmen what a debt they owed to Nelson and his fleet.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible story.......2002-06-20

I usually don't read history--but this man's life reads like a novel. An incredible story, and well written, too.

This book is way too demanding for someone already too tired to find the energy to read it completely. I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. The reviews on this book should state the demands it would make on an individual to follow its perscriptions.

5 out of 5 stars Sound sense with strategies.......2006-04-05

This book tells it as it is. If you are overwieght you are consuming more calories than you using, plain and simple.

There are 2 things you can do.
                      1) Burn more calories (exercise).
                      2) Eat less calories.

He explains that the most effective way to loose wieght is to reduce caloric intake as we often consume calories without thinking (using anecdotal asides that struck a chord with me).

Dr Katz clearly lays out the the most comon problems that people have. He explains how our eating habits that evolved for our survival can cause us to consume too many calories in the modern world where we have easy access to food. His suggests by paying a bit more attention you can shed pounds and provides strategies and tactics help. He explains that fad/popular diets do not provide long term solutions as they are not sustainable and do not provide the required permanent eating habit changes.

Losing weight is not easy, but it is simple.

5 out of 5 stars THE way to eat!.......2004-08-21

The Way to Eat has changed my life. I had already lost over 100 pounds, but was not as healthy nor fit as I would like to be. His method of eating has taken me to the next fitness level and has improved my health. His method really is the way to eat; as our bodies were designed and intended.

As he says, the way we are living today in the fast food/junk food culture is like a polar bear trying to live in the desert--it just doesn't work!

5 out of 5 stars what it is.......2004-07-29

I wanted to lose about 10-15 lbs. Everyone I knew (thin people overall)were suddenly doing the no-carb thing. But as someone who has never been on and never wants to go on a diet I could not get myself to accept that grains are my downfall and meat is the answer. I was leary of trying to, quote, trick my body into thinking it is starving, during an induction period that was being recommended by the other diets. I wanted a diet that would be heart healthy long-term and that I would want to share as a way of life with my children. I believe that the no-carb folk are motivated by the quick results of the induction period, not as much due to restricted carbs as restricted calories. My sister wouldn't eat a single grape the first few weeks.

But they are a convincing lot and I decided to take out a few of the popular diet books from the library and decide my path to a healthier/leaner life at leisure. The clear winner was The Way to Eat. It provides the motivation to break the bad habits (sugars, bad carbs, too few veggies, junk food). It acknowledged the existence of bad carbs and without blacking the name of all carbs. In fact it differntiates the good, bad or ugly in all the food groups with it's recommendations. The diet (and its presentation in the book)is balanced, positive, and backed by the bulk of professional studies over the course of years. A fun read, it made getting on track easy and delicious. So now, with the right foods on my shelves, I have returned all the books to the library's shelves and am here on Amazon.com to purchase my own copy of Dr. Katz's book. And I plan to share it with my no-carb crowd!

Note to the reviewer a few down who complains that the reveiws are from CT and MD: your e-mail was so not helpful...it had nothing whatever to do with the content of the book! Some free advice: grow up, stop being a nudge, and read the book before you comment.

4 out of 5 stars Good, if it is your first.......2004-06-11

This nutrition guide and overview is fine if this is your first exposure to nutrition advice written by a medical expert for lay people. It is written in an accessible prose that makes complex nutritional advice easy to understand. It also offers tips on behavioral modification for those individuals who are struggling to lose weight.

For those who have been reading this kind of stuff for years, however, I would like to point out that Katz recommends the American nutrition and medical communities' orthodoxy on low - fat, low protein, high-carb diets that is such a source of controversy in the medical community. We are currently at a nexis of research that may very well debunk much of what mainstream medicine has taught for years about nutrition.

So, I would only recommend this book for those who are just beginning their nutritional explorations. If you have travelled this low protein, low fat road before, and it has not worked for you, you might want to look at the alternative nutritional plans that are making their way into popular culture, like South Beach or Sugar Busters or the Zone. They offer a real alternative to Katz's, Ornish's and others' low-fat, low protein diets.

No one knows at this point, given the knowledge base, which eating method is "best" for optimal weight and long term health. I would encourage readers to experiment to discover which methods work best on an individual basis.

For more than a dozen years before World War II, the Chamberlain family lived and learned to eat in the tiny cathedral town of Senlis, France. Their Burgundian cook, Clémentine, presided over their kitchen in France, and later in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The alert, good-natured cuisinère is the heroine of Clémentine in the Kitchen, first published in 1943 and happily reissued in the Modern Library Food series. The book is a gem: part gastronomic diary and part cookbook (over 170 recipes are included), it also evokes, perhaps most interestingly, Clémentine's affect on a small town in pre-"gourmet" America, and its influence on her.

From the moment of Clémentine's Senlis arrival with her eloquent notebooks (containing lists of superb everyday dishes such as omelette aux fines herbs and blanquette de veau), to her preparation of extraordinary family meals, to her struggle and then triumph with American ingredients and kitchen ways, the book details the deeply shared gastronomic life led by the tiny, resourceful cook. It's a life defined by dishes, and the book includes recipes for many of Clémentine's best, including Coquilles St. Jacques au Gratin (gratinéed scallops), Escargots de Bourgogne (snails in garlic butter), Poisson à la Niçoise (fish baked with tomatoes and olive oil), and Crème Renversée (caramel custard). The recipes have been adapted for modern use by Narcisse Chamberlain, the author's daughter. Illustrated with dry points, etchings, and drawings, readers will delight in this wry yet charming tale and enjoy poring over the authentic mid-20th-century French recipes. --Arthur Boehm

                      Book Description

The Chamberlain family spent a dozen blissful years in pre World War II France, with their beloved cook, Clementine, learning the gustatory pleasures of snail hunting in their backyard and bottling their own wine. When war rumblings sent them scurrying Stateside, Clementine refused to be left behind and made a new home for herself in Marblehead, Massachusetts, where she introduced the initially suspicious Yankees to the pleasures of la cuisine de bonne femme. First published in 1943, Clementine in the Kitchen is a charming portrait of a family of gastronomic adventurers, and a mouth-watering collection of more than 170 traditional French recipes. This Modern Library Food series edition includes a new Introduction by Jeffrey Steingarten, food critic for Vogue and author of The Man Who Ate Everything, winner of the Julia Child Book Award.

                      3 out of 5 stars Clementine was a made-up character.......2004-09-04

Although not discussed much publicly (and the reviewers below don't seem aware of it), Clementine was an imaginary character that Samuel Chamberlain made up when his friend at "Gourmet" asked him to contribute to the magazine. It's written as a memoir, but it changes the feel for me when I know it's a made-up character. Laura Shapiro wrote about this in her recent book, "Something From the Oven." Also, the recipes are hard to follow, unlike Julia Child's French recipes.

                      4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2002-08-21

Excellent entertainment, but you can easily read it in one sitting!

More a recipe book than a memoir.

                      Great traditional french recipes.

4 out of 5 stars This is a Happy Book!.......2002-06-06

If you've been reading heavy, deep, take-themselves-way-too-seriously type books lately this might be just the ticket if you want to take a break. It's a fast read and if you enjoy reading recipes/cookbooks then you'll love this.

The entire second half of the book is a cookbook and every recipe looks great! I can't wait to try a few.

My only complaint is the use of French was a little tough for a non-French speaking person. I don't mind a word here and there but there were whole sentences and/or paragraphs occasionally. There was no translation so at times I felt a little left out. I completely understand why the author did this and since I like to also read books that use lots of Spanish (a language I do speak a bit of) I know if you speak French you'll love the book all the more for it.

If you love cooking, eating and want to read about some really lovely people then don't let the French thing stop you. Just don't be surprised.

4 out of 5 stars Your Own Private Cordon Bleu Cook.......2002-04-29

This delightful part-memoir, part-cookbook is a poignant tale of times past, probably never to be recaptured. The author and family lived for a decade in France where they enjoyed the services of their excellent cook, Clementine. When war clouds broke over Europe, they were somehow able to convince this estimable lady to cross the ocean with them and settle in Marblehead Massachusetts.

Clementine braved the culture shocks of 1940 USA very well to hear Mr. Chamberlain tell it. The mighty American supermarkets, the excesses of packaging, and the difficulties of a one-language nation left her unfazed and French to the core. Unfortunately for her, the one language was not French. I suspect Clementine was not as innocent and circumspect as the author believed, and I am sure at times was very lonely.

The occasional recipes in the memoir section of the book can be daunting to the American cook who is used to exact measures. Mr. Chamberlain rather grumpily hints we should use our imagination. I think I can handle "butter the size of an egg," but confess "a handful of flour" makes me uneasy. The recipes are not exceedingly difficult, though many are painstaking, and all will make a cholesterol counter wince. The recipe for Coquille St. Jacques (scallops) is a marvel of simplicity and excellence. The latter half of the book contains recipes with measurements translated by Mr. Chamberlain's wife and daughter. Somehow, these lack the charm of Clementine's unexpurgated notes.

The book is lavishly illustrated with the author's charcoal and line drawings expertly done. This is a fun book to own for anyone with a taste for provincial French cooking and warm-hearted memoirs.

5 out of 5 stars A literary and culinary delight.......2001-10-28

You'll love Clementine, and if you aren't american, and live in the U.S.,you'll relate to Clementine's disorientation in some things (complete meals in a box???,big supermarkets,no separate stores for the meat, the bread, the vegetables??).
The recipes are delightful, but,if you are watching how much fat goes in your diet, then don't buy this book to relay on daily basis, there is a lot of bacon, butter and cream in this book!!!.

                          Product Description

Clementine in the Kitchen is a light-hearted, entertaining tale, a nostalgic picture for lovers of France and New England. It is also a practical account of good food which will make your mouth water as you realize that it is a workable adaptation of the French provincial cuisine to American markets and cooking methods. An appendix with 125 recipes from Clementine's notebook, Samuel Chamberlain's famous etchings and Henry Stahlhut's delightful line drawings make this a book for every library and a necessity for every kitchen where good food is considered an art.

Given that it's the only book out there that details the Turkish Angora, it's worth picking up. However, I like its honesty in the demeanor of the animals, and it gives good tips for anyone who is merely an owner all the way up to an exhibitor. Great photos, too!

It is a real joy to find this excellent book about this rarebreed of cat. It is a must for those that are owned by - orcontemplate the beauty of - the Turkish Angora.

"Turkish Angora Cats : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training" (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) by Karen Leigh Davis, is the most accurate and informative book I have seen on my breed. The Turkish Angora cat suffers from much published misinformation, and I opened the pages of my book with intrepidation, only to find that it is wonderfully written and illustrated, and that it is truely an authoritative work on the subject. The book is thorough, and very entertaining and enjoyable to read. Congratulations to the author, the editor, and the publisher, on a job well done!

As a breeder of Turkish Angoras for 8 years, I am thrilled to see our breed finally has a book of its own. It is icing on the cake to find that the book is accurate, informative and and very helpful to anyone interested in being owned by a Turkish Angora. I recommend it highly

                                            Book Description

Though academic abilities have always been important in determining whether your child is gifted, talent in the visual and performing arts, leadership qualities, and intellectual curiosity are just as vital. But unless We as parents help nurture those talents, our gifted children can become bored, socially aggressive, or, ironically, underachievers in the classroom.

Here is a practical, informative, and authoritative primer for raising and educating our gifted children from preschool to adolescence. Beginning with sensible strategies to determine whether -- and in which area -- your child is gifted, this book takes parents through selecting an appropriate day-care center, a school, and a home reference library It helps us figure out where our role stops and the schools role begins as well as detailing ways to keep our children's creativity alive and how to cope with sibling rivalry and our own doubts and fears Also included are a recommended reading list, a special section on the roles of the computer and television in your child's and much more.

"It's difficult to imagine a stone left unturned by this excellent guide. So wise and rich ... it seems a shame not to put it into the hands of every parent."

4 out of 5 stars A good book on dealing with gifted children..........2006-04-10

My son has shown a gifted ability early on. He was reading by the age of 2 and was absorbing knowledge like a sponge. When he reached age 4, he was reading at a first grade to almost second grade level and starting to do math. I was not sure how the keep him challenged and he was getting super bored with school. This book had many great pointers for both gifted and average kids. I am of the belief that all children have the advanced capacity to learn and that all children have learning "growth spurts" and stagnation in learning. This book points out getting passed the lull in learning. This book really lays out what the child might be feeling because is written from a person who is gifted and understands that from the child perspective. It also really is a good source for dealing with gifted children when they reach their teens. I definitely keep the book handy for when my son reachs that age. It is a very good read for children's education!

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for frustrated parents!.......2000-03-11

This book is a wonderful resource for parents and teachers alike. The explanations of gifted children and their strenghths and weaknesses have never been explained in such simple terms. Parents can rejoice in knowing their child is not alone and teachers and finally understand that gifted doesn't mean perfect. I would recommend this book to any parent/teacher/administrator that feels they need help in understanding some of the actions of their "brighter" students. Thank you Amazon for recommending it!

                                                Book Description

Mike Ahern was a state premier with a difference. Eclipsed by the Machiavellian career of his disgraced predecessor Joh Bjelke-Petersen, he was also one of Queensland's most underrated premiers. He was relatively young and - for a National Party Leader - socially and politically progressive. The significance of his government was therefore much greater than his actual length of office as premier: from December 1987 to September 1989.Mike Ahern's entire parliamentary career was underscored by constant battles with hostile forces within the National Party. Although he eventually forced himself into Cabinet and then the premiership, his party finally repudiated him.Respected political commentator Paul Reynolds thoroughly evaluates Mike Ahern's political and leadership style, covering his long career in politics from the late 1960s to 1990. Not an authorised biography, this first account of Mike Ahern's political life was nevertheless written with the cooperation of this one time premier and statesman.
