A single source resource for seniors.......2004-10-11
More of a resource book than anything else; The Savvy Senior provides advice for seniors in a wide variety of areas. The layout for most of the sections is pretty similar. The author describes the problem, related problems, things you can do, and resources to help. For example if you have vision troubles then you might consider talking clocks, timers, or thermometers, talking blood-pressure monitors, voice-activated phone dialers, etc. The problem is where would you acquire these things since they are often not available in most stores. The resources section has the answers with web sites and phone numbers. This is just one of the many areas the book addresses. Other common problems and areas of concern for seniors that are addressed include: driving and transportation, utility assistance, telemarketing fraud, identity theft, grandparenting, money management, travel, fall prevention, retirement communities, choosing a nursing home, various medical concerns, Medicare, and Social Security. The two most valuable features of this book are the fact that it provides somewhat of a checklist of things you need to consider as you plan for aging and it points you in the right direction to get credible, quality help when you need it. The Savvy Senior is recommended for seniors and those making plans for their retirement years.

After watching the savvy senior expert Jim Miller on the Today Show, I went to a bookstore to look over his book. On TV, it sounded too good to be true, but after reading some of the book I liked it so well I bought a copy for me and another one for a friend.
The book covers the typical topics like social security, medicare and other health related subjects, but it does it in an informative manner that keeps your attention. What I liked were the many other subjects discussed like grandparenting, gadgets for seniors to make life easier, financial tips,taxes,genealogy and computers for seniors. Jim writes in such an easy to read style and I love the humor and helpful websites and organizations to contact. I especially liked the "Savvy Notes" that highlight and summarize the main points.
The granddaddy of all is how to find through a central website, where to find out all the benefits available to seniors and how to apply. It's like beingspoonfed the information insead of having to go on a scavenger hunt for it. I loved the book and it lived up to everything the Today Show said and more. I'd give it 10 STARS if I could.

and could NOT be happier. I got this when I went away to college, and I continue to use the recipes today. My first copy is stapled together in lots of places, and some pages still have traces of flour from where I've used the same recipe time and time again. WONDERFUL choice as a first cookbook, but gourmet enough to impress dinner guests.

I have been using Betty Crocker cookbooks since I was little girl. They have really kept up with the times, and this set is no exception! They use ingredients that most cooks keep on hand in their kitchens - not many ingredients that are unusual or hard to find. They also include the Good n Easy. I find that it's a great way to put a quick and nutritous meal on the table. The books are a great addition to any kitchen!

This is the single best cookbook in my collection. The recipes are not only fast and easy, they generally call for ingredients that I keep on the shelf. Perfect for those nights when I just don't know what to fix.

This was one of the first cookbooks I got when I was married five years ago and my husband and I really didn't know how to cook. It is a great cookbook for beginners, but really for anyone who wants a quick, tasty, healthy meal on the table very quickly.
Most recipes have very simple instructions, require few ingredients or equpiment, and are extremely user friendly. Plus, there is quite a bit of variety and plenty of great ideas. One thing I really liked was that the book provided cooking charts of ideal times to cook chicken, beef, and pork. As a beginning chef, this is very valuable, because you're pretty intimidated with meat and afraid you'll food poison yourself!
Not to mention, there is nutrition information for all the recipes, which I always find important. If you are health or weight conscious, you'll appreciate that most of the recipes in here are actually quite low in calories, and very healthy. You can simply replace some of the ingredients with low-fat dairy ones to make them even more so. Most recipes serve about four people, so you may want to double them if you have a large family.
Also, there are do-ahead recipes which I'm always on the lookout for, so you can cook a few up in advance and freeze them, and I've found these to be very reliable. It's a great cookbook for busy people, amateur chefs, and just anyone who likes tasty and quick meals. It's paid for itself many times over. You know those cookbooks you get home and there's only one recipe you can use and even with that one it asks you to use items you don't own and buy some spice you can't find? This is NOT one of those cookbooks, thank goodness. Most things can be made effortlessly.
TERRIFIC FOR BOTH BEGINNERS AND ACCOMPLISHED COOKS.......2002-09-23
If there is any cookbook that will inspire a new cook AND a husband to get in the kitchen and prepare a meal for the family this is the cookbook that will do it.
I bought this book for my soon-to-be-married sister-in-law as part of her shower gift. She is a beginning cook with little time on her hands. I wanted to get her a cookbook that I knew she would use instead of letting sit and get dusty on the shelf (or sold in a garage sale for that matter). This is the perfect book for her. The recipes really are easy. They really are good. It is a terrific cookbook to get someone who is a novice and who doesn't want to take the time in preparing something that takes 2 hours. Many of the recipes call for already prepared foods (for example, jarred spaghetti sauce, Bisquick biscuit mix, etc.) Some food snobs may look down on this book for that very reason, but this book is a huge motivator to get new cooks cooking and inspired to try more adventurous recipes and move on to foods that are not pre-packaged. The book contains many tips that will help save time, make substitutions, menu planning, and even location of the food items in the groceries. I am an accomplished cook and purchased the book for myself after giving it to my sister-in-law. My husband even uses it - that has made the purchase worth it right there.

For a working mother of almost two year old twins, this cookbook is definitely great. I can plan out my meals for the whole week just using this cookbook, and what is really great is that the menu now varies. The title is appropriate the meals are good and easy.
Even Better than I Expected!.......2002-01-31
I love cookbooks and am always looking at something new. Problem is, I never have time to try the recipes. Well, this book proved different. The recipes are so simple and quick, I tried it out the very first night. I couldn't believe my kids actually ate something that looked so exotic (& easy at the same time). Usually I'm lucky if I can get them to eat mashed potatoes. The recipes vary from simple meals like salads and sandwiches, too more complicated (at least that is the impression I want my husband to have) meals that you could serve to guests (they would never guess it only took you 20 minutes). They even have a prepare ahead section, for those days when you know you will barely have time to breath, let alone cook! I would recommend this cookbook to anyone, especially those Moms, like me, who are busy with soccer pratice, PTA, and other kid related projects.

Faithful companion.......2007-05-17
I purchased this book in 1967, it was a set of three (BC Good and Easy, BC Hostess Cookbook, and BC Dinner in a Dish) that I ordered through the mail. It's funny now as I agonized over parting with the $9.00 for all three (that's only $3 each!). In looking back I could have paid $100 or more as these books have been faithful companions throughout my cooking journey. I love cooking; I've written cooking columns for three newspapers, and I've written my own nostalgic cookbook, but after all these years I still from time to time find myself referring to the BC books for meal planning ideas or to make a family favorite like the Chocolate Chip Cookies from Good and Easy. This book does have some good information some pretty good photography as well showing health problems to look for as well as some very beautiful healthy birds. There is some good information on diseases well worth reading. It is however rather s short book for the price.
The book does need a good editor for the next time it is published. The reader will find the same sentence pasted into the text over and over I would guess as the result of abuse of a word processor.

Vintage book on parrots and other talking birds, such as starlings, crows, magpies, and more! Part of a wonderful series that All-Pets Press put out on pet birds. I think I have them all! Very hard to find now. Tips on training, care, & breeding. 96 pp. Highly recommended.

Excellent resource book for species of birds.......2001-07-25
Rosemary Low, a premier British aviculturist, has written an excellent guide for breeders and bird fanciers about the species and subspecies of many types of psitticines with color photographs and descriptions to help identify them. There is information on their locale of origin and population in the wild. I believe her information on breeding histories of these birds is interesting and helpful for potential breeders of any of these birds. I do however, feel that her information on nutrition and feeding is dated. There has been so much discovered in more recent years on the nutritional requirements of birds, certain species in particular, that one should refer to more current reference materials for that information.

Plenty of books have hit the market covering all aspects of scrapbooking, the new popular hobby of building a family memory book - but Susan Pickering Rothamel's Encyclopedia Of Scrapbooking Tools & Techniques is about the only reference you really need if you're an avid scrapbook maker. All tools and techniques are described here, from acid migration and its problems to handling bubbling and edging problems with decoupage, understanding how journaling works, and handling photos and paper. The information was complete & uptodate when published........1998-11-17
I was involved from the begining of this book and it took up a lot of my time to help Keith sort out some of the misconceptions with regard to some of the species. As I had been involved in the growing of PAPHIOPEDILUMS for a considerable time, and in breeding them I hope that I helped to bring this book to its final form. The trouble that was taken to obtian good photographs of all the specie was a long and dificult job as I can afirm. As recently I have had to give up orchid growing due to various reasons, I still look in this book to keep reminding me what great pleasure that I have had gorwing them in the past. We used to visit each others collections from time to time and exchange plants and ideas, and generally talk about what the future will bring. I can only recomend that anyone growing specie PAPHIOPEDILUMS this book is a must. Regards John L Marks

Using the true story of a murdered child as a point of departure, a leading expert on family violence argues that society's first priority must be protecting children rather than preserving families. Richard Gelles was once one of the most widely published and vocal defenders of family preservation: the social policy of keeping troubles families together as a primary goal. He then ran into the true and tragic case of David Edwards, an infant who was murdered by his mother after falling through the chasms in the child welfare system. David's story convinced Gelles that the system must change. Nearly half the children who are killed by their parents each year are killed after they have come to the attention of child welfare agencies. These children must be protected by getting them out of harm's way. That means a radically new child welfare system must be developed. The first priority must be to protect children rather than preserve families. This hard-hitting book critically examines family preservation programs and argues that they do not work. Gelles goes beyond mere criticism of the child welfare system to suggest specific ways the system should be changed, such as eliminating mandatory reporting of abuse, giving better training to caseworkers, and separating the investigation of abuse from case management.

This was undoubtedly one of the most horrifying, detailed and memorable Holocaust survival books I've ever read, and I've read many. At times throughout the book my tears would not stop - not just for the brutality of it all, but for the fact that despite all the evil surrounding her and committed upon her, Rena continued to live an altruisticly and humanely. Consistently, Rena shared every morsel of food she "organized" with her sister, always dividing it evenly, never willing to take food away from another prisioner - never reducing herself to the Nazi's level. It is incredible to read how she was able to survive despite all the odds and obstacles. She is not only a survivor but a true hero and I am forever changed and better for having known her story; I just wish I could have known her.
I recommend this book to everyone and think it should be required reading for schoolchildren throughout the world. NEVER FORGET!!!
Survival in Auschwitz.......2007-02-23
Rena Kornreich was 19 years old when the Nazis swept into Poland. She recounts her experiences under the brutal Nazi occupation of Poland, and her deportation, along with her younger sister Danka, in March 1942. to Auschwitz, where in harrowing detail she tells of the horrifying conditions there, and the preverse cruety of the Nazis.
She tells of her promise to stand by her sister to the end, and describes the gas chambers and the cruel experiments on Jewish girls and women by Mengele.
She recounts the logic of Nazi genocide...how any consistent Nazi plan had to traget Jewish women specifically as women., for they were the only ones who would be able to ensure the continuation of Jewish life.There is sound evidence that the odds for surviving the Holocaust were worse for Jewish women than Jewish men.

This is the best book about the holocaust that I've read so far. It is so gripping and really draws you in to the story. I can't conceive of how anyone survived that horrible place while being starved and forced to work. I find myself laying in bed at night thinking of how Rena and Danka would have loved a nice warm bed and I can't imaging having to sleep on a cold wooden board for 3 years.

For those fans of Rena, who have not heard, she passes away on August 8, 2006. It is up to you now to carry her voice and her story to the world. Among those sending condolences, The Museum of Women at Auscwitz, Poland, wrote, "Our historians still feel this is one of the most historically accurate and important book on Auschwitz ever written."
