      Book Description

Blind parents James and Iola Penland who did magnificent feats set the stage for Bill Gray's memoirs. Bill includes wonderful stories that involve other people and gives a special realism to life as lived from the 1930's until today.

The events take place in both rural and city settings and in all kinds of circumstances. The stories are filled with human emotions and will cause readers to laugh, cry, get frustrated, have compassion, adore the romantic passion, feel the political battles, and become exasperated at some of the crazy circumstances.

The book contains a vast array of settings. Just as in life, there are always changes taking place with new surprises and challenges.

There is history of Western North Carolina. There are the dynamics of NASA, the USAF, and the malestrom of White House politics. There is the everyday trials and tribulations of family living with some joyous triumphs and terrible tragedies. There is nostalgia and inspiration in this book for almost anyone.

5 out of 5 stars all about lifestyle changes.......2005-06-11

If you are looking to cure your migraines, you may want to check this book out. Since my sister has been getting migraines for the last 16 or so years, I have been telling her some of these things to get rid of them. Now that I suffer them as often as she does, I can't say that I have practiced what I preached, but I do believe that Zuzana Bic has the right idea of prevention through changes to your lifestyle. Basically, eat better, reduce stress, and get regular exercise. But she goes into detail to help the reader understand the physiology of the migraine disease and how changing your lifestyle will effect your migraines. If someone just told me that I needed to change these things, I would want to know how this would work. This book tells you. I do plan to follow her advise, and I like that it is not an elimination diet.

5 out of 5 stars Migraines for 30 years, until reading this book!.......2004-03-28

This book is amazing! I had migraines for 30 years until reading this book. Over the years I tried every drug on the market, ending with Imitrex then Amerge. Even with Amerge I started half of all my days with a migraine. Now I have control over them and I no longer have them. Don't think that because you already eat well and are not overweight that the book won't help. I ate a good diet and wasn't overweight... I still had migraines and the book explained why. The Publishers Weekly review statement that "Their program, however, may seem too simplified and too general for longtime headache sufferers" is way off base! It's exactly what long term headache suffers need!

5 out of 5 stars It really works.......1999-09-26

This is a very comprehensive book on headache prevention that ties togheter all the different lifestyle factors like food/nutrition, physical activity, and stress. And what is even better as that every tip and every strategy given by the authors to achieve a gradual lifesytyle modification actually works in practice.

5 out of 5 stars My doctor was wrong!.......1999-09-25

My doctor always told me that nutrition had nothing to do with headaches. Was he wrong! I modified my diet as recommended in the book - less fat, less sugar, more complex carbos, etc. Two weeks later my headaches were gone; After all these years of suffering needlessly. I just could not believe the improvement. I am free ...

      5 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY HELPFUL!.......1999-09-25

I recommended this book to a friend who used to get headaches daily. Now he just continues sending me "thank you" messages -- it must be a very useful book!!

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The contents are marvellous .......2007-08-17

This book has the authentic recipes (from someone who grew up in Hong Kong- Singapore is a close neighbour and a very mighty economic competitor, we are reasonably familiar with their food) from Hawkers fares to restaurant menus, and they are laced with background information and good coffee-table grade illustrations. Indeed, the Singapore Tourism Board rrecommends this book along with Mrs Lee Chin Koon (who is the late mother of Lee Kwan Yew, the first Prime Minister of Singapore) "The New Mrs Lee's Cookbook" and Sylvia Tan's "Singapore Heritage Food" as good references to Singapore's food.

But as the others mentioned, the only drawback is binding - it doesn't quite withstand tear. I am confident the publisher will fix this in their next batch though as I also own a couple of other cookbooks from them and the bindings are still strong after 4 years.

3 out of 5 stars book binding is of poor quality.......2007-01-28

Sadly, the binding is poor and doubt it will last the distance if one were to use it often, minor corrections on the proof reading is also required. I still have Terry Tan's first publication of the Her World cookbook of Singapore recipes and sincerely believe this is still the best publication produced, certainly worth every dime.

As for the "Shiok" cook book, nice glossy pictures but deserve a rating of 3 star.

5 out of 5 stars Get this off the coffee table and into the kitchen.......2006-06-16

I have two minor complaints about this otherwise excellent book:

          1) The quality of the binding leaves something to be desired. The entire cover detached from the book only the second or third time I used it. Thankfully the stitching is good.
          2) The prep times indicated assume you're a pro. While you can whip up the beef hor fun right quick, give yourself plenty of time when you're tackling the Hainanese Chicken Rice.

It's scarcely worth making these complaints, though. This has quickly become one of the most frequently used cookbooks in my collection (the photos may make this look like culinary porn, but the recipes are achievable by mortals). One taste of the beef hor fun and you will be hooked. The Hainanese chicken rice is a solid couple hours of work that will turn your entire kitchen into a war zone, but the end result is absolutely worth it (it's worth making for the chili sauce alone). The dressing for the jaganan is almost unbearably spicy, but impossible to stop eating. Recipes are easy to make in an American kitchen provided you have a well-stocked Asian market nearby, but there's no arguing with the authenticity--if you've traveled to Singapore and find that your most vivid memories are of the food, this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Malaysian's Opinion: An Awesome -Must Have Book.......2006-06-10

I'm originally from Penang and have been living in the US for over 10 years. There are restausants all over the US called "Penang"...trying to brand themselves with this city. Definitely a place where the food culture is intense, flavorful and demanding...a port city with a fusion of Portuguese, Dutch, Indian, Malay and Chinese influence.
I do a lot of cooking and have a wide collection of books. And I must say this is an awesome book to add to your collection. A must have for all who appreciate and enjoy Thai/South East Asian cuisine.
I have tried the mutton soup and Pandan chiffon and they bring back memories of childhood. Some of the ingredients are tough to get but as long as you are near a Thai Grocer...it can be accomplished. Authenthic? Yes definitely. For Beginners? If you have extra time on hand, yes. For Malaysian/Singaporean natives and collectors. Beautifully illustrated and well put together. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Preservation of our unique culture.......2005-10-21

Glad that there is finally a book that will preserve our unique food culture for our future generations. The only negative thing about this book would be the way the food is presented.

The food presentation is just too nice and classy looking. Growing up eating street (hawker) food, presentation is the last thing on my mind.

For someone who has never resided in Singapore, it will be hard to truly appreciate Singaporean food to its fullest. The recipes for Roti prata evoked late night memories of driving to Jalan Kayu, Buona Vista South (Next to NUS) or Al Ameen's at Woodlands for a late night fix of cheese, mushroom and egg prata washed down with several mugs of Teh Cino less sugar (as we say in classic Singlish).

How bout driving across the island from Choa Chu Kang to Changi Village just to eat Nasi Lemak or Kuay Chap (not in the book!). Just for a quick fact....here in Melbourne, I live on Latrobe street, and interestingly enough, the Changi Village Nasi Lemak store is just 2 doors away. I've never had worst malay food in my life..though they claim to be the Aussie arm of the original.

The recipe for Beef Hor Fun brings back memories of the endless circling of Geylang to find a parking space and finishing dinner off with Tau Huay with yaw cha kwai (Sweet bean curd with deep fried chinese pastry).

Again, here in Melbourne's Chinatown, I've never had worst Beef Hor Fun. Even the WORST Beef Hor Fun in Singapore still tastes better than what Melbourne has.

          The reason?

In Singapore, our hawkers specialise only on a very limited menu of say.....3 to 5 dishes? For example, my friend, Junjie who runs a Hainanese Chicken Rice store in Kallang, sells only roast or boiled chicken rice, char siew rice or roast pork rice.

China Bar in Melbourne has like 30 different items on the menu...all of them tasting similar. That is...similarly like crap. Most of the cooks coming from Hong Kong, I expected MUCH MORE. They ain't doing their country's food reputation any good.

In Singapore, at 2 in the morning, I walk 5 mins to the 24 hour hawker centre (S11) in Choa Chu Kang's HDB heartlands and can find at least 20 of the recipes found under 'Hawker Favourites', all available at around US$2 a plate.

Here in Melbourne, nothing starts under US$6 a plate...and I get a plate of tasteless food overseasoned with salt or soy sauce, lacking the essential "wok hei" or "Wok's breath". So what is this elusive "wok hei?"

Lets take the simple fried rice. Firstly....there are many types of fried rice, so if New York City only has one type seasoned with salt, here is how you can differentiate a good one from a bad one.

If you just taste oil, garlic, rice and soy/salt and the other various ingredients....you have a crap plate of fried rice. If you taste a plate with "wok hei", you can smell it. It has a deeper flavour that will remind you of slightly charred food. Its hard to explain how it tastes.....as its not the charred taste that you are imaging right now. It is a subtle taste.

I can guarantee you it is not charred, but instead, been imbued with this delicately delectable flavour through the hawker's skillful manipulation of the most basic of elements, metal and fire.

Even in Singapore, not all hawkers possess this skill. Not all foods require 'Wok hei', but for those that need it, it makes a world of difference.

For us Singaporeans overseas, all we can do is to try the recipes in these books and tweak them as everyone should. We do this all the time, so we can share with our Thai, Laos and Vietnamese friends in Melbourne the taste of Bukit Batok Bak Kut Teh or Balestier Road's Hainanese Chicken Rice. They do the same for us with their country's recipes and everyone has been enriched ever more by our shared experiences.

Thank god I'm returning home in December.

5 out of 5 stars A very useful addition to my library.......2007-10-01

I am a riding instructor, involved in the local Pony Club, and this is a great book. It is easy to read and it explains to non-horsey parents the important role they will have in their kids riding/horse loving career.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for parents of riders........2005-10-17

If you are feeling a little insecure about your lack of knowledge of horses and riding--especially safety issues--but you really care about the safety of your kids around horses and their learning experience, this is the book for you. There is no other resource like it and it will help you discern good practices from bad.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Prospective Horse Owners.......1999-12-14

Parents should read this book BEFORE they buy the horse. Dr. Jahiel can help you decide whether or not you (and your child) are ready for the joys and responsibilities of horse ownership. Her good humored and sometimes humerous advice will help families make the best decisions for caring for and enjoying their new horses.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for the novice 'horse mother'.......1999-09-08

This is one of the most useful books I have seen in a long time. It answers virtually all the questions that the non-horsey parent might have about riding. It covers choosing a stable and an instructor, when--and if!--to buy a horse for your child, things the parent should know how to do, what to expect of lessons, what horse shows are about, etc. etc.

I would recommend that everyone who teaches young pupils keep a supply of 'The Parent's Guide to Horseback Riding' in her stable, and hand them out to the parents of every new pupil. Even if you give them away, they will be worth every penny of the investment in time saved and misunderstandings avoided.

                  Book Description

It's about time! We can't help you find more of it, but we can help you keep track of it!

A Thinkbin Family Calendar is just what you need to organize your family's busy schedule. This new 2007 edition (starting with August 2006) features the same great "family friendly" layout that made this wall calendar so popular, and will help you get organized for the new school year and beyond.

Leave it to moms to create the perfect wall calendar for busy families. They know that "timing is everything" when trying to coordinate their family's busy schedule. So the creative Thinkbin Moms came up with a unique "time of day" grid (with special sections for morning, afternoon, and evening activities) to make it easy to record the whole family's schedule chronologically in one day block. With a Thinkbin calendar, you will know, at a glance, when you have free time - or need to be two places at once!

This Deluxe Large edition (17" x 24" when opened) features 9 lines of writing space per day so everything stays neat and readable. There are sections each month for recording important "To Do" lists and "Reminders". The inside back cover features a convenient organizer for recording all the information that changes each year - teacher's names and emails, school bus route information, coaches' phone numbers, etc. All these features, plus a handy pocket on the inside back cover, make a Thinkbin Family Calendar the perfect organizer for your busy family.

Your family's time is important. It's time to try a Thinkbin calendar!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite calendar.......2007-05-07

This calendar has plenty of room to organize all of our family activities. It has a pocket for storing misc. paper work and handy spots to write reminders and things to do for the month. My only caution is that it is BIG. We had to hang our calendar in a new spot because it takes up much more room than any other we've ever owned.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Calendar - I would recommend it.......2007-02-26

I buy this calendar every year. There is plenty of space to write in appointments and family planning. I like the reminders section for each month and the to do this month section. A great calendar.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great organizer for home and work!.......2006-03-02

I am an attorney with two small children and I find the Busybodybook a great way to keep track of my professional commitments and my children's schedules. I particularly love the to do list page with extra room for notes and reminders -- I can put down something I know needs to be done three weeks from now on the appropriate page and then carry foward any items that didnt get done in previous weeks. The grid system helps me see at a glance who needs to be where on a given day. I leave the last column for reminders of events that we might be interested in doing, but are not appointments/commitments (such as street fairs, lectures, art exhibits, etc.)

4 out of 5 stars So far it seems like a great Organizer.......2006-02-10

I've just received the organizer and this is my first week. I think it's going to work great. I don't have kids but I think it will still work if you have different things in your life you want to keep track of. What I like is that it divides different subjects within the week to better organize yourself. The only thing I see now that I would change is a better way to find the months. Other then that, I like it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Family Organizer Ever!.......2006-01-03

My whole family loves the Busy Body Book. The grid is designed so perfectly that even my children know how to scan across everyone's day to see if they can schedule in a play date or suggest a family adventure. I use it for myself, two children and leave the last column for dinners. It has become equally important as my american express card and I NEVER leave home without it.

                    5 out of 5 stars I couldn't live without it!!.......2005-07-14

I recently lost my address book at our local post office... I was just glad it wasn't my BusyBodyBook!!! This wonderful book keeps my family of 5 in the know!! My husband glances at it every morning before he goes to work so he knows what our plans are for the day. I use it to track my kids activities, my two jobs and my husbands work activities. It has been a lifesaver and a wonderful tool for me. I will always have the BusyBodyBook wherever I go!!! Kim Ranger, Indpls, In

5 out of 5 stars I Love BusyBodyBook Family Organizer!!!.......2005-07-14

I wanted to share my admiration and love of this family organizer. I have two young daughters and have tried to find a way to organize their busy little schedules. I found myself overscheduling and overlapping their activities and wound up missing appointments and play dates.

I learned about BusyBodyBook when it was featured in "Parenting" magazine and I am now hooked! I put my two daugher's names on the top column, along with my name and my husband. The middle column I use for 'family events'.

Each week, I can see at one glance what activities and classes we have. Since I have used BusyBodyBook, I have not had schedule conflicts!

I also like the fact that I can carry BusyBodyBook in my purse.

I am delighted to give this product a rave review! It really is a great tool for the busy family.

I like this organizer calendar, but I wish that the overall design would be a bit more appealing. The spaces for appointemnts are not large enough and the light cream background is boring at best. Still, it keeps a family of four on track.

Perfect, only it would be great to see more of these kind of calendars so that one could find, for instance, a Catholic Family Organizer Calendar: One that would list the Saints for the Day. This calendar is needed by us, in order to put the activities of various members of our home, and, my mother is an oil painter. It works very well, for my parents who are in their late 80's. We have the 2005 calendar, and I intend on purchasing the 2006. My parents can use a magic marker for their appointments, and they never miss these appointments. We hang it in a convenient place, near the phone and their morning activity in the kitchen. (BTW, Our Parish bulletin is nearby ... on the refrigerator.)

The perfect calendar for busy families (designed by two moms) keeps getting better! The new 2006 edition, featuring the same great "family friendly" layout that made this calendar so popular, now sports a handy pocket on the inside back cover - perfect for holding invitations, permission slips and other important notices. Whether getting ready for back-to-school or the New Year, this 17-month calendar (that begins with August 2005) is just what you need to get your family organized.

Who better than two moms to design the perfect family calendar? They have created a calendar that has all the features you need to coordinate your family's busy schedule. This Deluxe Large edition (17" x 24" when opened) is the perfect size for families with lots of activities. Moms know that busy families need large daily blocks with lots of writing space. The unique "time of day" grid design (with special sections for morning, afternoon, and evening activities) makes it easy to keep things neat and readable. Best of all, with the whole family's activities recorded chronologically in a single day block, it is easy to spot when you have free time - or need to be two places at once!

There is also space each month for recording important "To Do" lists and "Reminders", so you'll remember to make that doctor's appointment and you'll never forget when it's your turn to bring the team snack! The inside back cover has a convenient place to record information that often changes each year - teachers' names and extensions, school bus information, coaches phone numbers, etc. All these features, plus the new handy pocket, make the Thinkbin Family Calendar the perfect organizer for busy families. Would you expect anything less from two moms?

I have been using this calendar for several years and it is fantastic! I like its simple design. There is enough space to keep track of daily activities. The design makes it so easy for you to see all of your family members' activities for a month. I also like that the calendar starts in August, with the school year, and goes 18 months.

Not only do I love that it has lots of space for organizing the family schedule, but it has lines to keep things neat and easy to read. Each line also includes a small box where you can indicate which family member has an activity.

                        5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2006-01-20

this calendar is superb! i looked and looked for a calendar big enough to deal with everything that i have to put on it. This calendar is it! the space it leaves for each day is great, it is split into 3 parts(3 lines ) each, a.m. midday, and p.m. so no more fitting everything into one box, and another bonus is everyone else can look at it, understand it, and know what we are each doing, and not DOUBLE book!!As you can see i thoroughly recommend this calendar. I am on my second one and will be ordering one for next year as soon as it is out!

It's the first calendar where I have space for all my notes and appointments and not had to run over into other days. I just wish it came as a not-so-plain, more picturesque, calendar.

It has only been since the mid-1970s that any attention has been paid to the persecution and interment of gay men by the Nazis during the Third Reich. Since that time, books such as Richard Plant's The Pink Triangle (and Martin Sherman's play Bent) have illuminated this nearly lost history. Heinz Heger's first-person account, The Men with the Pink Triangle, was one of the first books on the topic and remains one of the most important.

In 1939, Heger, a Viennese university student, was arrested and sentenced to prison for being a "degenerate." Within weeks he was transported to Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp in East Germany, and forced to wear a pink triangle to show that his crime was homosexuality. He remained there, under horrific conditions, until the end of the war in 1945. The power of The Men with the Pink Triangle comes from Heger's sparse prose and his ability to recall--and communicate--the smallest resonant details. The pain and squalor of everyday camp life--the constant filth, the continuous presence of death, and the unimaginable cruelty of those in command--are all here. But Heger's story would be unbearable were it not for the simple courage he and others used to survive and, having survived, that he bore witness. This book is harrowing but necessary reading for everyone concerned about gay history, human rights, or social justice. --Michael Bronski

Such a good book. It gives a different perspective on the Holocaust. It's a page turner...I couldn't put it down once I got past the first few pages. Everyone one should read!

5 out of 5 stars A Moving and Powerful True Account of Survival.......2003-12-08

A sodomy law had been on the German law books since 1871, a law known simply as Paragraph 175. Only a few people were ever sentenced under this obscure law until June of 1935 when, after the rise of Hitler and Nazism, the Nuremberg laws were enacted and the consequences of Paragraph 175 strengthened. Where once before, you had to be caught in the act of same sex relations, now simply receiving a letter or the spreading of idle gossip would have you sent to a concentration camp.

"The Men with the Pink Triangle" is one anonymous man's account of the harshness and cruelty faced by gay men at the hands of the SS and the ruling Nazi party, as well as by the other prisoners -- criminals, politicals, emigrants -- who viewed "filthy queers" as lower than the rest of them. They were distinguished by the large, pink triangles sown onto their prison outfits, making them easy targets for taunts and punishments. Also, homosexuals labored through the worst of the work details and "volunteered" for medical experimentation, which usually resulted in their deaths.

Some advantages also appeared for gay men. The "Capos" who were in charge of the prisoner barracks, often made lovers of some of the prisoners, giving them some protection and better rations and clothing. As is says in the book: "Homosexual behavior between two 'normal' men is considered an emergency outlet, while the same thing between two gay men, who both feel deeply for one another, is something 'filthy' and repulsive." The anonymous man used this to his advantage and survived the camps and the threat of being sent to the front lines.

Ths is a moving and powerful story about survival and about the right to be who you are, during one of the darkest times in world history. Highly recommended.

                                    4 out of 5 stars One Man's Story.......2003-05-25

Although short, this man's story could have benefitted from some thoughtful editing. Powerfully recounting his persecution at the hands of the Nazi regime, a full picture could have been painted had the author continued to tell its affects on the rest of his life AFTER World War II. An important book, no doubt, and definitely to be included in any Holocaust library.

5 out of 5 stars A story that needs told more.......2003-01-23

I figure we teach school kids about the Jews suffering in the Holocaust, and the blacks struggle for Civil Rights. It would make sense that kids learn the dangers of homophobic bigotry, by reading this book. It will open your eyes! The same anti-gay stereotypes then, are the same ones now.

This book is about a gay man who survived the Pink Triangle, and took him over 25 years to tell his story, as their were still many anti-gay laws on the books there. This man never wanted any public or economic gains from telling his story. In fact the Nazis had more contempt for the gays than they did the 'inferior racial groups' they persecuted.

5 out of 5 stars This book profoundly touched me.......2002-01-09

I read this short book in one sitting and was so moved I had to re-read it again the next evening. All people, I feel, will identify with the story on some level. I have passed this book around my circle of friends, and their emotions ranged from anger and disgust toward the Nazis to profound sadness and sympathy towards the writer. This book is not for the depressed or overly sensative! Oftentimes, one forgets the impact of Nazi aggression on those who experienced torture firsthand. I only wish more was known about the Third Reich's war on gay men.
