Florid, turgid prose.......2004-06-29

A very distinguished female scientist, in whose long life of 92 years, she experienced and contributed to Victorian science. Neeley takes us back to that era. She shows how Somerville became well known to the educated via such books as "Mechanism of the Heavens" (1831) and "On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences" (1834). They were well received and helped popularise science, and also the (shocking!) concept that a woman could write such analytic prose. That such deeds were not a male preserve.

To be sure, from our vantage point, some of Somerville's analyses may seem strained. Prior to James Maxwell's discoveries of his equations that unified electricity and magnetism, those effects could only be treated in a vague, qualitative fashion. Neeley's excerpts of Somerville's writings reveal this. Along with a florid, turgid style. But keep in mind that this was the accepted style of that era. And until Maxwell came along, her speculations were arguably the best any scientist could do.

"Dessert Circus" is the companion cookbook to Jacques Torres' television series, filled with step-by-step instructions and photos to help you recreate all his delicacies at home. After flipping through the book, I had my doubts.

Every recipe I tried was delicious. My favorite recipe has to be his "Chocolate Cornflakes". Delicious and fun to make.

Things I noticed about these recipes: They seem designed for parties and less for home cooking. Yields were large, with servings for 8 seeming to be the magic number. If you want to impress, you'll love this book. There is a fair amount ingredients that may be hard to find.

To recreate many of the recipes listed will require: time, talent, and a little prayer to pull off. This is not to say that the results aren't worth it. Desserts like the impressive "Nougatine Basket with Fruit Sorbets" (three diamonds) can be accomplished, you simply have to take your time and be prepared.

If you've ever looked at an issue of "Chocolatier" or "Pastry: Art & Design" magazines, you have a good idea of what you'll be in for with this cookbook. Cooks looking for a challenge will find plenty of recipes to choose from.

Almost as good as at Le Cirque!.......2000-11-07

Jacques is an excellent teacher who doesn't seem to try to omit an ingredient or a secret technique as some chefs do. He is eager to share his thoughts on how to make each recipe a success and even includes the decorative touches that make people ooh and ahh. I've tried, and with great success, the desserts involving Jacques' light puff pastry and the tender flaky tart shell recipes and they please both the eye as well as the palate. I entertain frequently, making twelve course Chinese meals and always ending with a French dessert, most of which now come from 'Dessert Circus' or is inspired by it. I especially enjoy watching my guests' delight over the desserts. Thank you, Jacques.

Molloy's book covers the same ground more broadly and deeply. This book is light on the text, heavy on glossy pictures that don't always correlate with the text, and a pretty good example of packing the minimum of information into the maximum of consumer dollars spent. Buy Molloy's book instead as a beginner book on this subject.

This book really answers any questions about men's attire: from different types of materials to matching shirts and ties to what to buy for casual day wear. The pictures and extremely helpful! This book is very easy to follow and a great reference! You can get some really good gift ideas from it also. I found this guide to men's attire to be the perfect companion when shopping for a new suit. I will not go into detail about my own experience, but let me just say that I recommend it to anyone who likes to look good. It appeals to all age ranges (I think) whether you are just out of college or looking for just the right thing to wear to the retirement party.

This book is an excellent, easy to read and follow guide for any man wanting to dress well. It is a must-buy for any man going on a job interview, corporate employees, employers who wish to define "casual day", graduates starting out in the job market who wish to build a wardrobe, and spouses/relatives/friends who want to buy for men in their lives (small cut-out cards where sizes can be written in are included in the book so that these can be brought while shopping). Other topics covered include accessories, formal wear, fabric weights and styles, and lots more. I found this to be a most helpful resource that I will refer to again and again!

How it all fits together.......2000-06-28

It is always a delight when you discover that one of your long time friends and colleagues has outdone themselves and broken through in a new "vocational" arena. Basil Sharp has written a book, THE ADVENTURE OF BEING HUMAN, that deals with the task of creating a new Story about the Earth, the Universe and everything in it and how it all fits together. He has done a great job - with a fine non-technical text that has a forthright, non-defensive style.

Although for most of us (ICA folks) there will be little totally new information, the book presents a new and unique approach that links all of reality together. This is done both with prose that is exacting and yet fresh (reminds me of Ken Wilber in some ways) and with introductory sections of poetry that breeze by. I almost never read or appreciate poetry in these kinds of books but I read and enjoyed this!

Few Protestant to Jewish Conversions.......2002-10-31

This is a good book for anyone considering converting to Judaism and wanting to read about the experiences of others. There are many case studies of those who have converted to Judaism, their reasons for doing so, the reaction of their family and friends, and their feelings about the whole experience. The examples are overwhelmingly positive, but there are a few who report difficulties "feeling Jewish" afterwards or feeling that they are totally accepted by their new Jewish community.

The examples are mostly from those who either converted from Catholicism or had no real religious upbringing. I was disappointed that see few Protestant-to-Jewish conversion examples; the ones that were given, were mostly from those who had very limited Protestant upbringing as children, not really practicing Protestants who decided to convert to Judaism.

The other disappointment I found with this book was due to all of the white space. This book is definitely not as long as it appears, and it will be a very fast read.

Overall, I found this a helpful and interesting book that I only wished were a bit longer and had a few more examples.

The stories in this book are sometimes hauntingly beautiful. One woman expressed my thoughts so well that I read her story aloud at my bat mitzvah. This is truly a book for making connections.

I had this book posted to England where I was spending my year abroad. Part of the reason why I was looking forward to that time in England was the opportunity to find out whether Judaism was what I wanted in my life. This book helped immensely and gave me many thoughts to pursue in conversation with friends and my rabbi. I can only recommend it to people who contemplate conversion.

Great Book for Beginning/Intermediate Investors.......2004-01-13

This was the first book I read on investing. I learned about papertrading and the various strategies he wrote about. It was easy enough for me to learn and I knew very little about investing other than buy and hold for long periods of time. I've read and reread the book a few times and use it as a reference.

You should have TC2000 in order to get the best understanding of this book possible. If you don't have this software, it will make doing the examples much harder, so then, I would say don't waste your time trying to understand his examples.

I like how he talks about his trades and whether he made or lost money. You can back track in TC2000 to see whether he made good trades or not.

The papertrading is invaluable. If you can't successfully papertrade, don't bother using real money because you'll lose more with real money than papertrading. I am now using real money and making about 1/5 to 1/4 what I did papertrading. That's still excellent.

This book can change your success rate in the market by leaps and bounds. Why would anybody put real money in the market unless they had worked the bugs out first!!!! This book is also great for the experienced trader to enhance their trades. Anyone trading today should not be without this book. Once past all the advertising, the book is a good tool for learning when to enter and exit a trade. However, I found that the examples used often are more "ideal" than what is actually found in the market. Use some more difficult examples, David, and teach us how to really understand what's going on with a stock.

This book would be a great book worth 4 stars if it wasn't for all the advertising in the book. It's a good thing it's spiral bound, and you can always rip out the advertising. This book teaches you a few entry techniques for stocks and options and has forms for recording and paper trading. Get rid of all the damn advertising, and this would be a great book!

They include an increasing concern with the efficiency costs of inequality in land distribution, devolution of common property resource management to users, large scale redefinitions of property rights in the context of transition economies in Eastern and central Europe and the end of white rule in South Africa, liberalization of land markets, mounting pressure to deal with environmental issues, the proliferation of civil society organizations voicing the demands of the rural poor, and more democratic and decentralized forms of governance. There are many channels of access to land and each of these affects how land is used. While much attention has traditionally been given to state-led redistributive land reforms, this is only one among a variety of options, and currently not the easiest to manage politically. Other channels include inheritance and inter-vivos transfers, intra-household and intra-community land allocations, community titling of open access resources, the distribution of common property resources and the individualization of rights, decollectivization, land markets and land market-assisted land reforms, and land rental contracts. This book analyzes each of these channels of access to land, and recommends ways of making them more effective for poverty reduction.

A Hidden Child Revisits Her Childhood.......2003-09-26

Young Ingrid Kisliuk survived the Nazis in Vienna, Austria and again as her family found refuge in Belgium. While the events of this period are well-known, what is special about her autobiography is that she uses a Socratic dialogue to contrast the details of her story as a hidden child with the questions an inquiring adult mind raises in hindsight. She is able to give us a detailed recollection of her extended family's daily life: how they lived and work and hid from the expanding presence of soldiers and anti-Semites. One episode tells of the raid of their Brussels apartment, a cramped garret studio. Downstairs was a basement workroom where her father did piecework crafting rabbit skins into toys. Hearing soldiers arrive on their block she and another family member scurried into a cupboard in the workroom and escaped being captured. The author describes this trauma and many other equally stressful and dangerous times and how she thinks and feels about them today. She analyzes the motivations of the other people in her life then: why did they make the choices they did? Ingrid Kisliuk's memoir is a courageous personal history, a document of World War II and a valuable contribution to Jewish history.
