        Book Description

A pioneering geologist from Scotland, Charles Lyell (1797-1875) was one of the nineteenth century's most important and controversial scientists. His landmark 1830 book Principles of Geology, for example, went against the received wisdom of the age and posited that throughout the history of the earth, geological changes occurred largely through slow and ongoing processes. And although he is today perhaps best known as Charles Darwin's mentor, Lyell's contributions are still felt in the disciplines of geology and evolutionary biology. In Lyell in America, Leonard Wilson continues his acclaimed study of Lyell's life and works with this chronicle of Lyell's extensive travels throughout America which blends detailed scientific observations with colorful travelogue.

Lyell first came to America in 1841, remaining for more than a year and touring widely. His immediate reason for the journey was to deliver the prestigious Lowell lectures in Boston. His larger purpose was to study the geology of North America, hoping that the vast scale of the continent -- its mountain ranges, plains, great lakes, and rivers -- would confirm his belief in the uniformity of geological history. The America he and his wife Mary arrived in was a country in transition. Now more than two hundred years old, the English settlements along the Atlantic seaboard had, in relative isolation, developed a distinctly American culture. Over the course of this tour and three subsequent trips to North America (twice for extended periods), Lyell observed both America's geological phenomena and its social landscape. He studied coal deposits, and collected rocks and fossils. He showed how the Niagara River formed its dramatic gorge. He rode to the top of Mount Washington. And he assessed the sophistication of the geological sciences in North America through conversations with his American counterparts.

In his travels, Lyell also made insightful observations about American society and the continent's pronounced regional differences. Traveling along the entire Atlantic coast and as far inland as the Mississippi River, he and Mary saw villages, towns, and cities of every size and temperament, and they met and came to know many Americans. Lyell marveled at the prosperity and rapid growth of pioneer settlements into flourishing cities, as well as at the vigorous enterprise of the American people. He enjoyed the speed and comfort of the river steamboats and the friendliness of the people. In the South, he studied slavery and challenged many of the racist suppositions of white intellectuals there, pondering how the institution of slavery might be ended. Lyell in America provides the first detailed exploration of Lyell's pivotal years of American travel using previously unpublished letters and journals, together with Lyell's published writings. Through the eyes of Charles and Mary Lyell, Leonard Wilson provides a vivid portrait of antebellum America and of Lyell's contributions to American geology.

3 out of 5 stars Not really about juicing.......2007-09-05

This book contains absolutely NO juicing recipes, just ones for blending. Because of that, I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. Although, to be fair, the "blending" recipes were a plenty, varied largely in flavor and type and were very interesting.

The title led me to believe that it would contain ways in which to heal myself through juicing. While Dr. Jensen did go into extensive detail about the therapeutic effects juicing can have and mentioned some combinations for certain ailments, it spanned only a couple of pages and was formatted in chart form. (AND the chart is also available in, at least, one other book by him.) It definitely was not the in-depth how-to guide I was looking for.

Dr. Jensen also goes into great detail about ALL of the vitamins, minerals and trace elements the body needs and where one can find them in food items.

He does provide a chart which lists all the food items he considers beneficial to juice, which chemicals are predominate, and for what ailment they can be useful for. Again, though, this chart is in at least one other of his books.

So, while I was disappointed about the lack of juicing recipes, the book contained enough information and facts to allow me to overlook that. All in all, it was a worthy read, and one I would suggest to someone looking to really get a grasp on the physiological needs of the human body and how juicing can help someone attain them.

            3 out of 5 stars just ok.......2005-05-27

not a bad book, but a little more info than i was looking for. recipes are really for "blending" and not necessarily just for those using a "juicer," and especially if you are just starting out. if you just want the basics, try The Juiceman's Power of Juicing. it is really good!

I am not a big book reader, but I got this based on suggestions since I wanted to do drip irrigation. As a book it is fine. If you are looking to do drip irrigation and just want something to cover how to do it in the best fashion then this is your book. I personally was looking for something that would cover each component and its options, pros, cons, etc. This book seems more focused on the authors specific way.

                5 out of 5 stars Still a good book.......2004-07-21

I always recommend this book, expecially to people who've recently moved from "back East" to California. I couldn't have set up my drip irrigation system without it, even though I had done some tech-writing work for an agricultural research institute.

5 out of 5 stars Drip Irrigation gets down to nuts and bolts.......2000-12-28

This is a very helpful book for the gardener who wants to actually install a drip irrigation herself. The author goes into specifics about how to test your soil so you know how water moves through it and you can calculate how much water you'll need to apply, and he talks (somewhat unsuccessfully for my complete understanding) about transpiration rates for various types of plant, so you can kind of figure out how much water your plants actually use, and he gives a primer in the various components of a drip system. Basically he is teaching plumbing, horticulture, and geology just enough to help a novice design and install a drip system without hiring a pro. The best part, in my opinion, is the fact that in the back of the book there is a form for ordering the components, and it includes the option to purchase a main assembly fully assembled so I don't really need to master all that plumbing skills I might have had to master. This book is certainly worth its price. Be advised, however, I have an older version of this book, so I don't know if the current edition has the wonderful order form.

This book had some useful information, but it seemed somewhat out of date and had very little about automatic systems.

Concise and to the point, this clearly illustrated book is the definitive work or proper irrigation and an absolute must for any serious gardener.

                Book Description

Persistent drought conditions in many areas have focused attention on the need for less wasteful landscaping practices. Too often, however, people think of water-efficient landscapes as being boring and unattractive. In this book, co-authors Jim Walters and Balbir Backhaus present more than 300 arid-adapted plants that will bring dramatic color, beauty, and cooling shade to low-maintenance, water-thrifty landscapes --- putting an end to the myth that beautiful gardens require a lot of water and work.Published at $39.95 Our last copies available at $19.98

Shade and Color is the only book I have found on the market that offers such an update guide to arid-climate plants. The pictures are well done and plentiful.

The majority of the book consists of "Individual Plant Descriptions" -- amazingly comprehensive. The authors have even taken the time and forethought to classify whether or not your plant will do well in not only one but also several desert elevations.

Every important landscape detail is accounted for each type of desert plant. You will know ahead of time the height, width, flower color, and watering needs of each plant.

Anyone living in the Southwest and California that wants to be successful at landscaping needs this book in his/her library. This enlarged text is also an essential reference book for landscapers and landscape maintenance companies.

During her 23-year professional tennis career, Betsy Nagelsen beat Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Pam Shriver on the court, and now she's beating the clock with a no-nonsense approach to fitness over 40. Presented in the classic For Dummies series style--simple language and easy-to-read pages peppered with icons, cartoons, and lots of sidebars to break up the 28 chapters in this 330-page book--Fit over 40 increases the most lethargic mouse potato's (the term for computer-age slouches) understanding of the aging process, while offering a practical game plan for "turning back the hands of your body clock."

Described by Monica Seles as "one of the fittest people I know," Nagelson McCormack is respected in the athletic community for her dogged devotion to keeping fit, and, with the help of veteran health writer Mike Yorkey, she inspires readers to follow suit in an entertaining, informative, and collegial way. As this U.S. Open Senior Women's Doubles Champ educates you about metabolism (once it slows, you'll automatically gain a pound or two a year unless you exercise), the three pillars of fitness (cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and stretching), the fundamentals of good nutrition, choosing the right exercise program, and even tips for checking out a gym, you'll feel as if you're getting the skinny from an informed friend.

Filled with black-and-white photographs of Nagelson McCormack exercising, Fit over 40 is designed for busy people (indeed, she advises readers to initially commit to a workout that's just five minutes long) who want to skip between chapters and absorb vast amounts of information quickly. To liven things up, you'll even find sidebars on soccer star Brandi Chastain's sports bra, a critique of fitness magazines and Web sites, and a list of inspiring fitness movies. --Deborah Geigis Berry

4 out of 5 stars Speaks to all levels........2007-01-20

I am a former athlete that my 20s and 30s that got the best of me. Now 50 pounds heavier, with high blood pressure and lower engery levels I want to make a change. What I liked best was how this book was an easy read the first night read over 50 pages. The key fundemental that was repeated was get up and do something constintantly even if its taking a walk for 15 minutes for 3 times a week and then increase steadily. This book also gives people a little embrassed about getting back to the gym.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good advice, it seems........2002-07-27

I'm a 45 year old overweight male whose primary exercise over the past decade has been to push my PC's mouse. High cholesterol, achy joints, and bouts of depression have impelled me into taking action. One component of my program is going to a gym to lift weights and do aerobic activity. I'm finding Betsy's book extremely helpful, because she speaks directly to my needs and my situation. (If I was an athlete, would I be looking for a book like this?)

She is both positive and realistic in her approach. For example, she suggests that rather than planning to exercise three or four days a week, you should plan to do it every day. She reasons that if you miss two days on a seven-day schedule, you're still exercising for 5 days, and that's good. By contrast, if you miss two days on a three-day schedule, you've only exercised once during the week, and that's useless. Huh, who'da thunk it.

If you're over 40, sedentary, and feeling the need to get into better shape, I most definitely recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Needs an attitude adjustment.......2001-05-01

Frankly, I didn't get past the introduction. The basic gist was that if you're over 40, you're on that slippery slope into the Dark Abyss and the only reason to get fit is to hold off the Grim Reaper a little longer. Other books for aging Baby Boomres are much more positive about the possibilities for an excellent quality of life, such as "Walking and Running for Women over 40."
