Book Description
When twenty-two-year-old Christopher Colie was packed off to Panama by the US Army, he'd already spent several adventurous years riding the rails and shipping out on freighters headed to the Caribbean, sleeping in flophouses and hobo camps, and, when he bothered to turn up, baffling his Reed college classmates with his exploits, and worse, his indifferent attitude towards academia. One of his fellow students at Reed was a sheltered young redhead named Carole Calkins; Chris proposed to her within hours of their first meeting.
Drafted in September of 1952, only four months after marrying Carole, Chris chafed at the loss of freedom that came with army life, and twice went AWOL before being sent not to Korea, but to the Canal Zone. Naked to Love (from Kenneth Patchen-"Nothing is clean, or real, or as a girl,/Naked to love, or to be a man with.") brings together the remarkable letters Chris wrote to his new wife during their separation. Writing in the latrine after lights out, leaning over the hood of a truck, or brooding beside noisy pool tables, Chris faithfully pursued his twin obsessions: getting his love for Carole down on paper, and capturing his visions of Panama and the wild rabble of conscripts he lived among.
Bundled for nearly fifty years in an attic suitcase, these real love letters are a unique contribution to intimate history, with their nostalgic view of the Canal Zone in the early fifties. They transport us to a long-ago, exotic place with breathtaking immediacy, as though we had stepped inside a fading black & white snapshot of the Miraflores Lock. Intensely personal, their sheer urgency makes them the stuff of universal human drama, and lets us relive the tumult of youthful passion-the author's, and our own. As much about the longing to write well against all odds as a record of separated lovers, Naked to Love will strike a deep chord with anyone who ever endured an army hitch with impatience, or awaited a husband's return. Out of these compelling letters-and Carole Colie's elegant, wistful backward glances-emerges an engaging and heartbreakingly honest portrait of a young man.
Customer Reviews:
Relatively uninteresting compilation of man's letters.......1999-11-21
A man in the Army writes home to his wife, constantly telling her to write to him. He is very self-involved and constantly begs her to tell him how much she loves him with no real feeling for the fact that she is home pregnant with his child. He pays little attention to where he is and spends his free time with prostitutes and complaining about others making too much noise. Gives very little information about much except himself.
I am in love with the author and his passion is contagious........1999-11-16
The authors letters are honest. I had to stop and remind myself these letters were written by a very young man. It's not often we are allowed to look into the heart and head of someone so completely honest in his feelings and thoughts. I want to secret the book from others who ask me what it's about, as if the letters were written to me.
I laughed outloud on a bus while reading Chris's conversation with Andy regarding god and hell.
I was not offended because he told his wife everything including his trips to the 3 dollar whore-house. Frankly I would have been more surprised if he hadn't. I believe him when he said it had nothing to do with his feeling or love for his wife Carole. The fact that they are still married and his wife saved his letters tells me all I need to know about the character of Chris Colie.
Left a bad taste in my mouth . . ........1999-10-18
I am sorry to say I didn't like this book. I couldn't wait to get it because my boyfriend also was in the service in the 50s and we wrote to each other every day. I enjoyed the first part of the book and all of the "interpretations" given by Carole (his wife), but Chris himself was (even for a young man/boy in the 1950s) egocentric to the point of being boorish. I don't remember exactly when Atlas Shrugged was written, but Chris (the author of these letters) sure had Ayn Rand's philosophy of selfishness. Imagine a man telling his wife he slept with prostitutes because his "sexual urge was just like my urge to eat or to scratch an itch" and he HAD to satisfy it . . . expecting her to believe that, YET telling her if she slept with anyone else he would kill himself. Ugh. I just didn't like Chris. Also, he wrote in his letters how he was DRIVEN to write . . . but we never find out if he ever WROTE anything of significance again. Very disappointing.

Book Description
Victorian women certainly recognized that male naturalists were not always willing to welcome them warmly into their inner sanctum of scientific work, honor and prestige. This book examines the ability of women to understand themselves and respond to their needs as complex human beings. Within a framework of socially and scientifically constructed norms, these Victorian women used science as a path to self awareness and intellectual accomplishment.

Book Description
One of the challenges of living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is coping with the stress that triggers the illness. In this book, a clinical psychologist provides a comprehensive overview of IBS, describes its treatments, and helps readers establish healthy new eating habits. Using self-monitoring forms and charts, sufferers learn to manage their symptoms, develop strategies to handle flare-ups, and deal with the anxiety and depression that often accompany this common disorder.
Customer Reviews:
Another worthless book..........2006-09-14
I agree its useless; just like so many IBS books. There a million of IBS books out there everyone with their opinion on how to treat IBS. I bought this book and Eating for IBS. I followed the suggestions and got no relief. They are now recycled paper.
Easy to Understand. Worth Having!.......2005-05-07
I really enjoyed this book because she makes everything very understandable. She also discusses the possible links between IBS and childhood abuse, stress, foods that irritate, etc. She states that studies have shown a link between depression (or stress related disorders) and IBS. She also gives practical advice on how to cope both mentally and physically. Some suggestions may be things you have heard before, but she puts it in such a way so you can really see the benefit of doing these, that outwieghs the inconvenience. A good example is the food diary. Who wants to be bothered with doing that. I didn't...so I never have. But she makes goods points as to why you should take a few weeks out of your life to do something that would likely save you months or years of dealing with the symptoms and pains because you didn't do it.
The read is light and interesting, unlike medical books tend to be. It was helpful to me, a sufferer of IBS as well as Chron's Disease.
useless.......2003-04-13
I have suffered with IBS for many years. This book offered simplistic advice that any reasonable person would have tried already, such as visualization. Save your money, do not buy this book.
The Last IBS Book You Need!.......2002-07-18
After buying, reading and giving away many, many books on Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I was blessed to have found this one. No recipes in this one, this book makes clear the powerful correlation between IBS and anxiety, IBS and stress, IBS and depression, IBS and fear. After spending a week of increasingly severe pain accompanied by increased anxiety about the pain (or was it increasing pain about the anxiety?)and winding up in the local ER, I realized that I needed to help myself by calming myself. This book tells how. In compassionate, orderly chapters, Barbara Bolen teaches how to truly "break the bonds of IBS." Hooray for her! Hooray for all of us!
A book that helps you regain control.......2000-11-27
IBS can be a horrible thing to suffer with and unfortunately a lot of books written on the subject can even be worse. In my search for books on IBS I found a lot of them written by doctors to be unsympathetic and confusing. That was until I found Barbara Bradley Bolen's book on IBS. Her book was written in a clear and friendly manner and it was a pleasure to read. Also, Bolen writing was very sympathetic to the disease of IBS.
One of the things I liked so much about this book was the case studies that she put in. For example when she was talking about the importance of doing a self monitoring sheet to help spot patterns in your IBS she related what she was talking about to one of her patients. It was helpful because it makes you realize that you are not alone with dealing with IBS. She also has many different activities in her book that can help you spot patterns in your IBS, as well as activities to help you calm down, cope and relieve stress. This book was very helpful in understanding, dealing with, and hopefully reducing the symptoms of IBS.
I recommend this book to those that are suffering from IBS and also those who know and love somene that has it and want to understand more about what it is really like. A great buy.

Several options using 3 or 4 basic folds...........2001-01-24
The book gives relatively clear instructions and has corresponding drawings to help diagram. Makes for a great basics type of book. I had hoped for a few folding techniques that were more dramatic...it is still a fine book with many different folds.

Signs and Symbols: African Images in African American Quilts (2nd Edition)
Customer Reviews:
eye-opening and wonderful.......2007-01-31
I saw the Gee's Bend exhibit and was overwhelmed by the energy, the art, and the human story in those amazing quilts. They were so different from mainstream quilts, and I wanted to find out more about African American traditions in quilting. I stumbled over Signs & Symbols at my local library and loved it. It not only has wonderful photos of quilts, but delves into the symbols and artistic structure of the quilts and how they relate to traditional African art and symbols---with plenty of photos of African textiles, amulets, etc. I'm no expert in anthropology and ethnology, but I am familiar with academic research, and I think Wahlman has presented a wealth of fascinating and compelling evidence for the relationship.
The quilts are truly stunning, the quilting (not just the piecing) shows up well in many of the photos, and dimensions are given (which I'm delighted by---I can get a feel for the measurements of the patches and blocks). This book's quilts are informing my own quilts and will be for many years. In terms of influence on my work, I put Signs & Symbols in the same category with Liberated Quiltmaking (by Gwen Marston).
Be aware, this is not a how-to book. There are no projects, and no descriptions of how to make quilts. But if you like quilt books that are filled with beautiful old quilts, and want to immerse yourself in a different and entrancing quilting tradition, you'll love this book.

Customer Reviews:
for a parent who had no idea about timeouts.......2007-02-12
My daughter was and is continuing to grow into a stubborn little girl who knows exactly what she wants. She was beginning to display tantrums with me. I immediately turned to Amazon, looking for a self-help book about tantrums in toddlers. I had no idea about timeouts. I grew up in a home where my parents spanked, hit me with any object they could find. I wanted to learn about disciplining without force, without physical abuse. I wanted to know why parents begin to hit their children harder and harder as their children make them angrier. My mother would hit me so hard that her hand would hurt her, but I never showed any pain as a reaction. I was afraid this would happen to me now that I was a parent.
As soon as I read this, I perfected the skill immediately. It's an excellent book. I didn't even finish reading it---only read it halfway and then leant it to my friend who had a child who she was too soft on, who had terrible tantrums as a result. I bought a timer in Walmart with a spring for 3.00 and placed this on the dresser, chose a spot (the bed in our one bedroom condo) with the door open, and put the timer on for the number of minutes of her age (2 years old, then 2 minutes to sit on the bed). Read the book---it goes on to explain how to do this. After only 2 times of doing it, and being consistant, it worked. My daughter is so obedient and afraid of timeout. It's as if I hit her, like my mother did when she disciplined me over 20 years ago. There are secrets taught in this book that I never realized. Timeout's absolutely a great concept. Yes, some people just look at me as if I'm crazy in the caribbean (where they still hit their chidren in daycares and schools with their hand, belt, etc) but it's beginning to be taught there as well, to begin introducing timeouts to the educated caregiver. Great concept. Great book.
If you follow this book's advice- you're time outs work!!.......2002-08-24
I read this book 3 years ago when my now 6 year old was 3 and I also had a toddler. Now, with four boys 6 and under, I'm still following this book's advice. I'm constantly getting comments from people about how well behaved my boys are. They are shocked to find out that I use time outs and rarely spank or raise my voice. Others who pan this book for overanalyzing the time out are not disciplined enough themselves to apply excellent discipline techniques to discipline their own kids!
Horrid Book.......2002-02-09
I was very disappointed by this book. It offered confusing explanations of on obiously simple technique that can be explained in a page. The author was self-congradulatory on coming-up with "feel-good" solutions to discipine problems. I would most stongly urge interested parents to get the book entitled "Dare to Discipline" if they want solid advice that is well written.
Time Out For Toddlers.......2000-05-16
A good practical guide that takes the emotion out of discipline and gave me a sense of direction.
A discipline without yelling and spanking.......2000-02-16
I live in overseas and the only method I have been told to discipline the youngsters is to spank or yell at them. I bought this book when my little one just around two years old. I find this book is very useful and the instruction is very clear. My son used to refuse to eat any kinds of vegetable except brocoli but after I used time-out twice, this problem never appear again. Time-out may not be able to discipline every misbehavior but at least it can help both parent and child calming down for several minutes. I find it useful not just for correcting children's mishaviors but also an alternative for parents without yelling and spanking.

Book Description
HISTORY / JEWISH / HOLOCAUST.
There will come a time, not too many years from now, when no one who suffered at the hands of the Nazis will be here to proclaim: "I was there. This happened to me. I saw this."
Author Benjamin Samuelson is one of few survivors of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando: "I don't understand how or why I made it through alive. . . . I woke, ate, did the task assigned me, and had but one thought: Why?"
"So many times, I considered walking into the air-tight brick room with the next group of people. Why didn't I? The only answer I've been able to think of is that some inner, divine spark of life would not allow it. I sincerely felt that by living, I would one day bear witness."
It took Benjamin 50 years before he could begin to relate his story to Jeff Shevlowitz. From his happy childhood in Rumania to the horrors of four Nazi concentration camps to the Israeli struggle for independence--a story of historical significance; countless miracles; and the will to live, with abiding hope, to tell the world of what he had witnessed.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ!!!.......2003-07-01
If you could read only 1 book on the Holocaust - this MUST BE READ!!! I couldn't put this book down. It is so perfectly engaging, so well written, from start to finish. You don't have to be an expert on history, culture or the Holocaust to appreciate this book. Shevlowitz delivers a masterful writing filled with enough detail to make you feel as if you were actually there watching, feeling and experiencing this real, human story. This story was so well crafted I actually experienced sadness when I reached the last page - not only for the tradegy of it all but also for the realization that the book was coming to an end and I would miss reading such a beautifully told drama.
Abiding Hope--A MUST READ.......2003-06-25
An extremely well written story that one will find compelling on many levels. If you are going to read a book on the Holocaust--check-out Abiding Hope!
"Almost" unbelievable.......2003-05-10
Abiding Hope certainly makes for some pretty darn interesting reading. Not your typical "I'll read the first two chapters, one in the middle, and the final chapter" kinda reading. Shevlowitz uses simple, yet carefully chosen words that evokes emotion and piques one's interest as he shares the stories told to him by Holocaust survivor, Benjamin Samuelson; a laborer of the Nazi death camps. Readers unwittingly relive Benjamin's maddening ordeal, day-by-day.
Abiding Hope is an easy three-day reader, although not so easy on the emotions. What I read forced me to question my own biased beliefs, or rather ignorance about the Holocaust. I thought I had heard it all regarding the Holocaust, but Benjamin speaks of the early days of genocidal skepticism and of his own "living hell" reality. While reading Abiding Hope, especially the parts about the countless atrocities Benjamin witnessed, and also those he was forced to participate in, I couldn't help but think, "this couldn't have happened; certainly he's made up these exceedingly horrific parts." I thought, how could these people that Benjamin spoke of be so easily beguiled into believing that disposing of the Jews (and prisoners of war and other people of various ethnicity) was in the best interest of the nation. I thought that perhaps these parts were weaved into the story for shock value. I couldn't believe that another human being could be so disassociated and unyielding in demonstrating their hatred and disregard for human life. Then I thought about that peculiar institution that flourished for many years in the USA--slavery.
I think Abiding Hope should be on the 'required reading' lists at colleges and universities.

Not your typical "I'll read the first two chapters, one in the middle, and the final chapter" kinda reading. Shevlowitz uses simple, yet carefully chosen words that evoke emotion and pique one's interest. The reader unwittingly relives, day-by-day, Holocaust survivor, Benjamin Samuelson's story of how he endured life, or something close to it while working in the Nazi death camps. While reading Abiding Hope, especially the parts where Benjamin tells of the countless atrocities he not only witnessed, but was also forced to participate in, I couldn't help but think, "this couldn't have happened; certainly he's made up these 'exceedingly' horrific parts." Benjamin's story forced me to, once again, question my own biased beliefs about the Holocaust. The book makes for interesting reading and it is well written and edited. You can skip reading the last chapter. I think Abiding Hope should be on the 'required reading' lists at colleges and universities. Easy three day reading.
a remarkable tale of survival.......2003-04-28
This is an amazing story of survival. It's hard to believe that anyone could have the will to live, after experiencing and witnessing such horrific brutality. At times it was hard for me to continue reading but I was compelled to find out how Benjamin survived it all. I have read other Holocaust books, but I have never read any that have moved me this much. This book should be required reading for all.
