A story of intellect over adversity.......2004-03-17

John Herman takes the reader from the moment of his birth, through his mix of public and private schooling, military service, college days, family life, and scientific and business careers, finishing with a peek at his current life in retirement in Florida. John's early life was difficult. His father was killed when he was just four years old, and his mother had few skills to earn a living. As she bounced from job to job, place to place, man to man, John was often shuffled off to live with relatives or at private schools, until his mother failed to send money to pay for food and clothes, or to cover the tuition and board. As many young men have done, he joined the Navy, with the hopes of changing his fortune. His superiors recognized his exceptional intelligence, but were not pleased with his frequent fighting, nor his absences without leave. As unlikely at it might seem with today's liberal treatment of offenders, he was punished by confinement, with a daily ration of bread and water! He probably is the only member of the National Academy of Sciences that can claim that experience. Herman left the military service and used the G.I. Bill to help him make it through college, then found a civil service job, as a civilian employee of the Navy. Before long he moved to private industry, and later, even started his own company (more than once). His research focused on problems that mostly concerned government agencies, including the Department of Defense and the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA). He made significant contributions to such important scientific and military problems as global communications - particularly to the disruption of radio communications by nuclear detonations and solar storms. He co-authored the book 'Sun, Weather, and Climate,' which was first published by NASA, then reprinted by Dover Press, and was even translated into Russian and Chinese. Most readers will find the physics of Herman's research a bit over their heads, but he does a good job of explaining the applications, which were important to the nation. The quality of John Herman's scientific work was ultimately recognized by his election to the National Academy of Sciences. 'The Metamorphosis of a Geophysicist' is an entertaining and inspiring book. The conversational style of Herman's writing makes the reader comfortable, as one might be in talking with a life long friend, whether he is sharing his exhilaration in making a scientific discovery or the emotional devastation associated with the suicide of his son. While it is paperback, it is well bound, there are only a few typographical errors, and it contains a number of interesting photographs. I highly recommend it. This book is still the best one out there...........2006-03-29

I am a professional who has been reading and studying the field of supplements. This book is the best that I have come across. Not only is it the most complete, but the supplements in it were used in Dr. Atkin's clinical practice. This is were the rubber hits the road, and the concrete real life information that gives this book credibility. If I were to buy only one book on this subject, it would be this one, even over the encycolpedia type books.

Helped my allegies and asthma.......2005-01-28

Because of my allergies and asthma, I was on Zyrtec, Advair, and had to carry an albuterol inhaler everywhere I went. I did the diet some years ago and it worked well. After seeing this book somewhere I decided to give it a try.

After reading this book I thought he Dr. Atikin's lost it this time. There are a lot of vitamins he wants you to take. Plus he started selling his own line of vitamins so I thought "ahhh, that's why." I talked to my doctor about it and he said it wouldn't work, you would just be wasting money because your body will piss it all away (literally). I was spending $150 on medications, the vitamins were about $20, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Well, I tried it, and it worked. I felt a lot better, and I didn't need to take the medications anymore.

If you buy only one book on supplements.......2004-04-15

This is an excellent reference book on nutritional supplements. Far superior to any I have ever read. Page for page, you get relevant, researched information.

Excellent content, but disregard the conspiracy theory.......2003-06-11

This book has useful and helpful information about vitamins, minerals, amino acids and their role in the body. I couldn't be happier with the technical part, very well documented. However, a big con of this book is Dr. Atkins' huge ego and conspiracy theories. He almost claims that he started the vitamin hype and the nutrition-based approach to medicine. We know this is not true. Many others deserve so much more credit. Also, he goes down a path of silly and unfounded arguments about how the government is evil and doesn't want to raise the RDA of certain nutrients. This is silly. The RDA should be as low as it can be. Otherwise food manufacturers would be adding tons of unnecessary vitamins to food, more than the bare minimum to just prevent diseases. People would feel compelled to take mega doses of vitamins without proper information about them. It's up to us to raise our intake if we want to. RDA is not supposed to be the optimum amount for everyone, just the minimum to prevent simple deficiencies that could cause diseases. Also, he uses intricate reasoning to arrive at conclusions that vitamins are not more widespread because food manufacturers lobby against them. One could argue the opposite, that vitamins are becoming widespread because their manufacturers are lobbying for people to accept them. There's always a silly conspiracy theory for any subject. Dr. Atkins chose an absurd one and he stuck to it throughout his book. I suggest the reader takes his non-medical opinions (politics, RDA, etc) with a grain of salt. But not too much salt, because sodium is bad for you :-) Otherwise, the book is excellent.

Everyone should read this book!.......2003-01-11

This information on nutrition, like in all of Dr. Atkins' books, is well researched and well written. It's easy to understand and enables the reader to identify a condition then follow the instructions to alleviate it.

We all know now that Atkins has been on the right track all along, but I had no idea how much of a role nutrition played until I took advantage of the research and resolved a long standing debilitating physical problem of my own.

This is a wonderful recipe that also goes into the history of the restaurant. I love the columbia and always got to the one at St. Armands circle when I am in Florida. I love the ropa vieja and cuban snawhiches are quick and easy

Spanish Cooking, Columbia Style!.......2005-05-14

This is such a wonderful cookbook. In South Florida, I visited Columbia and loved the food. I purchased it to try something new. The recipes are authentic with some background narrative woven in there. The language is easy and you can follow the recipe without any problems. Of the recipes I tried, most could be prepared from a well-stocked pantry, not necessarily a huge trip to the grocery store like some cookbooks demand. There are some really great seafood recipes in here too. You'll love the simple Cuban sandwich in here too. I believe this cookbook is well worth the price.

The Columbia restaurant is the oldest spanish restaurant in the US and the very best! Their succulent recipes are all here and I have tried them. My dishes tasted just like the ones I have eaten there! The history of the restaurant, told in this book, has tears, laughter, romance, tragedy, triumph and above all, and incredible love for this, our country. This book is indispensable in my kitchen and my house is always full of company because of it. Recipes that are many generations old, made with love. Beautiful book.

Not what I was expecting.......2005-01-14

The book has beautiful images, but I was expecting more elaborated instructions. For example: The picture in the cover is beautiful but when you go inside the book to learn how to recreate something like that, it only teaches you how to color feathers... And the situation repeats itself on almost every tabletop idea.

This book has some great ideas that are fun and easy enough to try the next time I entertain. I especially liked the chopstick placemats. Plus it is much simpler to have one book to rely on than dragging out a binder of magazine clippings every time I'm looking for inspiration.

DiLeo does a great job of treating the subject matter of the interpretation of children's drawings. This is thorough work which gives the reader insight into such crucial aspects of interpretation as development, content, and projective uses. This is a "must read" for any therapist intending to elicit and interpret drawings from child clients.

My favorite book - ever........2005-10-14

Yes, this is a vivid account of the Jewish struggle for freedom, but it is also a beautifully written love story. I never tire of reading it, and it never fails to elicit a tear of joy, or of grief. Howard Fast at his best.

Just added this to my short list of favorites.......2005-02-21

I just finished this book. First and foremost I really enjoyed reading it. I decided to read it because I know so little about Jewish history; I had heard the name Judas Maccabeus but I didn't know who he was. I would like to say that it is wrong to consider this book primarily from the vantage point of describing the Jews. I kept asking myself if the story of the Maccabeans was considered such an important part of Jewish history, then why did so many Jews let themselves be led to the slaughter by Hitler? So, for me, this book was not so much about the Jews as it was about history. Also,to me, this book is fictionalized history, where the author tries to incorporate the facts as much as possible. Even the narrator in the story, Simon, says you can't take it as genuine fact. Regardless of that, Howard Fast does a magnificent job. It took a few pages to get into the flow, but once into the book, I was caught. I bought this book used for 2 bucks, but I am going to send for a better copy to keep. For me, the lesson in this book is not so much about how great these ancient Jews were, as it is about why man has to keep fighting wars. And as a corollary, why our societies demand slavery (of one form or another and don't kid yourself, it exists today, but in a different form). Of note, these ancient Jews made very limited use of slavery. One of my favorite teachers once said, "Wisdom comes when you put the book down". From reading this book, I felt I learned a great deal about war and slavery. And I had to ask myself the question, Do the Jews of today believe in the same God who is portrayed in this book about the Jews of 150 years B.C.?

In defense of Jewish liberty.......2005-02-18

This book captures the most important part of Hanukkah, a celebration of Jewish liberty. For anyone who wants to learn more about the kinds of lives Jews lived, why liberty is such an essential aspect of Judaism, or why we must sometimes fight for the liberty and freedom we enjoy, this is the book for them. It is beautifully written and joyous to read.

The true and bloody story of Hanukkah.......2003-02-07

I remember being really taken with this book when I read it as a kid, so I found a used copy to read to my kids. We make a big deal of Hanukkah so that Jewish kids don't feel gypped compared to everyone else, but hardly anyone really knows the story of Hanukkah in all its graphic detail. We should not shrink from telling our kids this story, and Fast's book is the only popular book I know that does it. The kids will not only have a better appreciation of the meaning of this holiday, but will also have a better appreciation of current events.

This is the story of the Maccabees- 5 glorious brothers who lead the rebellion by the Jewish people of Judea, against the cruel tyranny of that land's Greek and Syrian occupiers.
It is particularly relevant today, when the Jewish State is fighting for its life against cruel and ungodly forces that have decided that the Jewish people are no longer entitled to their homeland, and that Israel must disappear.
"We where slave in Egypt - and we will never forget that we where slaves in Egypt. So it must have been then, in the long ago, when our people, twelve tribes of them, sick with wandering and longing for rest, came out of the desert and saw the wooded hills and fertile valleys of Palestine'.
Once more the Jews have returned from their homeland, this time after two thousand years of persecution, and soon the lion will be awaken in the souls of the Jewish people to protect their land, from those who would kill their children and take it way, as the Maccabees did so with the Greek and Syrian invaders.
We read how a pretty eight year old girl, Deborah, the daughter of the schoolmaster Lebel is brutally murdered on the orders of the Greek warden of Judea, Apelles, and we are reminded of the slaughter of Jewish children by Arab terrorists, who much of the world, today support. It is these many incidents of cruelty and the desecration of the Jewish peoples' holy places that leads the peace loving people of Judea to become fierce warriors who's message to the world is: "We have extracted the price of freedom, which is always counted in blood, even as Moses did, and Joshua and Gideon too. From here on, we will not ask forgiveness, only for strength, for strength."

In a chillingly familiar parallel the attitude of those who support Palestinian terror,we read of the edict by the Greek King Antiochus, that to kill a Jew is no longer a crime but a virtue".

We learn how the peaceful Hebrew people, a people who ask nothing more than to determine their own future, in their own homeland, are forced to become warlike and to avenge the blood of its children: "They will pay -for every lick of flame, for every drop of blood, for every hurt."
There is always a message of hope: 'Simon a free people cannot be conquered - for us it is always the beginning, always the beginning."
It is this hope enshrined in the depiction of the beauty of the land of Israel, the only homeland of the Jewish people, and the beauty of it's children living in peace:
"Never was Israel like this before in all it's time, for the children played without fear, laughing as they ran through the grass, and splashed in streams. On the hillsides, the white lambs bleated for their mothers, and between the rocks pink and white flowers grew. Nowhere was there a break in the terraces; layer upon layer, they climbed the slopes, and the crop was a good thing to see, so rich and verdant. Who could see such things and deny that this was the land of milk and honey, blessed and thrice blessed".
