Today's computers are fantastically complex machines, shaped by innovations dreamt up by hundreds of engineers and theorists over the last several decades. Does it even make sense, then, to ask who invented the computer? McCartney thinks so, and in ENIAC: The Triumphs and Tragedies of the World's First Computer, he's written a compelling answer to the question, crediting two relatively unsung Pennsylvanians with what is arguably the most significant invention of the century.

McCartney's heroes are Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, and as he makes clear, there are those who might question the choice. Nobody doubts the pair designed and built ENIAC, the world's first fully electronic computer and a watershed in the history of computing. But for years the importance of their contribution, made during World War II and sponsored by the U.S. Army, has been downplayed. The brilliant John von Neumann's subsequent theoretical papers on computer design have made him the traditional "father of modern computing." And Eckert and Mauchly later even lost the patent on their machine when it was claimed that another early experimenter, John Atanasoff, had given them all the ideas about ENIAC that mattered.

But McCartney's meticulously researched narrative of Eckert and Mauchly's careers--covering the thrilling three years of ENIAC's construction and the frustrating decades of little recognition that followed--sets the record straight. He carefully weighs Atanasoff's claims and gives von Neumann the credit he earned for advancing computer science, but in the end he leaves no room for doubt: if anyone deserves to be remembered for inventing the computer, it's the two men whose tale he has told here so engagingly. --Julian Dibbell

Book Description

For all his genius, John von Neumann was not, as he is generally credited, the true father of the modern computer. That honor belongs to the two men who built the first programmable computer, the lengendary ENIAC: John Mauchly and Presper Eckert. In ENIAC, two stories-of the three-year race to complete the computer, and of the three-decade struggle to take credit for it-are intertwined and fully revealed to general readers for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars The people behind the first computer........2006-10-23

I was interested in this story because my sister works for Unisys. I was interested in how the computer industry came together, and who actually invented the first computer. McCartney does a good job of telling the story of how two inventive engineers came up with the details of the first computer. Once they did most of the substantial work, it was interesting to see how a number of others took claim for their accomplishments. Some of these were the doubters who initially turned them down. Others were people who fastened on to their invention and made them better. Success breeds these type of people.

Eckert and Mac certainly didn't win fame or fortune for their invention. They had to fight court battles, try to turn their invention into a successful product, and fought numerous personal demons. Still, people do not recognize their accomplishments. If a poll was conducted today, people would not recognize what they did. Penn does not even recognize their accomplishments.

McCartney does a good job of detailing the early history of the computer. This is a nice read for those interested in the beginning of the computer.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, but needs a precise definition of "computer.".......2006-09-16

Depending upon one's definition of "computer" the ENIAC may or may not be the worlds first general purpose computer. The ABC had no stored program and was a special purpose machine designed exclusively for solving linear equations. The ENIAC was more general purpose, but it too did not have a stored program. Each of Zuse's machines were electromechanical (relays) and some argue that a true computer processes information completely electronically. My personal opinion is that the BINAC (immediate predecessor to UNIVAC) was the worlds first computer. In any case, it is a wonderful book!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars the men behind ENIAC.......2006-07-11

This book is not really the story of ENIAC -- the world's first digital electronic computer -- so much as it is about the two men who created it: John Mauchly and Presper Eckert. You've probably never heard of either of them, but you should have.

The two met in 1941 at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering. There they developed the concept of a computer that used electricity rather than mechanical movements to solve complex mathematical problems. Their break came during World War II, when the U.S. Army funded their work to build a machine that could calculate missile trajectories. At the time, words like entrepreneur were seldom used, and computer referred to a person who sat at a desk and did repetitive calculations with, essentially, a very good adding machine.

Scott McCartney's small, well-written book is a gripping tale of two visionaries who fought massive egos, inert bureaucracies, and the coldhearted realities of the commercial market to see their invention thrive. They achieved astounding triumphs, including CBS's use of ENIAC to predict the winner of the 1952 presidential election.

Mauchly and Eckert also experienced crippling losses, both business and personal, such as the death of Mauchly's wife, Mary, who drowned when the couple went for a midnight swim off the New Jersey shore. Famed mathematician John von Neumann stole the lion's share of the credit for their most inspired inventions. Later IBM overpowered their company with sheer competitive muscle. Both men spent much of their lives defending their patents for ENIAC. "They never got rich from their invention," McCartney writes.

In the end it was a lack of management skill that sank the inventors. "For all of their creative genius," McCartney observes, "the builders of the first computer turned out to be lousy marketers and poor businessmen."

That shortcoming, and the price the inventors paid for it, may represent the most telling lesson of all.

5 out of 5 stars The real story of inventing and building the First Computer.......2006-05-28

This book is the only one to tell the real story of the first Electronic Digital Computer. Scott McCartney talked to people who where part of the team that built ENIAC. He also did primary source research to find the real story. J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchley never did write their own story about how they invented the computer. If they had it would be the same one that Scott wrote. This is a must read book if you want to know the truth. You will probably not find it written elsewhere.

Von Neumann who was credited with having developed the computer architecture we use today actually stole it from Eckert and Mauchley and put his name on it. His followers including Herman Goldstine tell a tale that is not true. So do the Burks who spin a tale that is equally untrue. With such primary sources it is no wonder that most books about the inventing of the computer do not reflect the truth.

It is a shame that this book is now out of print since it is the only one that tells the real story and has the footnotes to prove it. Scott is an not a typical author - He had no axe to grind - He investigated .. looking for the truth and found it. It is what one would expect from a WSJ reporter.

5 out of 5 stars Read the book - don't listent to the nut cases.......2005-08-24

Who are these geeks that put those silly reviews where they try to explain who "really" invented the first computer - as if! There is some guy who writes a review below that states that the information here is "all wrong". What a blow hard. Have you ever kissed a girl? You pocket protector wearing nerd.

The book goes into great detail about Eckart and his partner and the court case and provides a completely thorough and valid case to support the title. Its a fantastic read for anyone that is interested in technology history and/or the founding of digital computing. Its very well balanced between human interest and nuts & bolts.

The most interesting part about the book is how much of what is commonly believed to be recently invented goes back to a much earlier effort. If you want to know how the PC came about, you must understand ENIAC and similar computers.

      Book Description

Don't let everyday chemicals destroy your health.
Environmental health specialist Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton explains how chemicals in pesticides, plastics, cosmetics, cleaning solvents, and many other common products build up to toxic levels in our bodies and break down our natural defenses against disease. Toxic Overload reveals the scientific evidence that links chemicals to a host of chronic illnesses and offers a three-step program to combat this toxic poisoning, including:

      - a 7-Day De-Sludge Diet that shows you which foods will reduce your intake of dangerous toxins
      - a body-cleansing supplement program to strengthen immunity and reverse the damaging effects of toxic chemicals
      - home detoxification tips that reveal where dangerous toxins lurk in the home and how to implement chemical-free products into your life

3 out of 5 stars Great Information, But..........2006-09-15

First, I would like to state that this book is full of useful information; it is very well researched. The only fault, in my opinion, is that the book is at least twice as long as it needs to be. The author is frequently repetitious and wordy. Often, the information presented is too detailed to be of any use to the average reader. She should simply have indicated what to avoid and why. Also, it would perhaps have been helpful to include recipes for the 7-Day De-Sludge Diet; they're not particularly difficult menus, but it would have been nice. Overall, it's a worthwhile effort, and I would probably be interested to read her other book.

5 out of 5 stars The contents of this book will scare the heck out of you.......2006-04-27

This review is written from the perspective of a former hospital administrator that was lucky enough to be exposed to complementary medicine in one of my positions. This exposure has caused me to be interested in the concept of "green living". If you are at all interested in "green living" and reducing the toxins in the lives of your family this is a must read book.

This book is divided into two general sections, how to reduce your toxic overload, and the chemical connection to chronic illness.

In the first section (reducing the toxic load) the author outlines three steps, these are:
      1. Supplementation
      2. Seven-Day Desludge Diet
      3. Chemical Free Home and Beauty Products.

Under Supplementation the doctor outlines specific vitamins, minerals and supplements (and her suggested levels) and tells you why you need these things. I appreciated that she also identifies the food sources for these same substances.

In the Seven Day Desludge Diet she outlines what to eat to assist your bodies own systems in purging toxins that are already present. This section recommends the usual suspects as far as consumables. What was unanticipated is the level of detail that the doctor goes into regarding preparing and storing foods.

The discussion of Chemical Free Home and Beauty Products is just down right scary. I know that I got up to read labels no fewer than 6 times while reading this chapter. Considering the fact that I am not new to "green living" I was surprised to find a couple of products in my house that I needed to toss out.

The remaining two thirds of the book is devoted to the Chemical Connection to Chronic Illness. This portion of the book was fascinating to me. If you are interested in improving your health you will get a lot of information from this section of the book. She covers the following areas in this section:
      1. Immune system diseases
      2. Neurological diseases
      3. Digestive disorders
      4. Hormonal imbalances
      5. Cardiovascular diseases
      6. Cancer
      7. Multiple chemical sensitivity
      8. Obesity & Musculoskeletal disorders
      9. Childhood disorders

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving his or her health. I will caution you that this is not a casual read, and probably not one for young teens in the respect that it might frighten them. The first time I tried to read it I could not get through it, it just seemed far too alarmist on my first read. Apparently I was not in the correct frame of mind. I picked it up again this morning and went through it in two hours (even with underlining). I did a little research while reading the book and was able to corroborate many of the facts that I found contained in the book. I think this is a well researched, and well written book that everyone should read.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE BOOK!.......2005-07-15

I want to say that this book was like a breath of fresh air to me. What is it about? The truth. Here is a book written by a doctor who tells the health hazards of the chemicals that surround us and are found in everything from the food we eat to the cloths we wear.
I found it shocking as Dr. Hamilton exposed the dangers of these chemicals to the point of causing cancer, diabetes and respiratory illnesses, just to name a few. I was not surprised as I myself have suffered from what I now know, from the information I found in this book, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. This is a disease caused by overexposure to chemicals where your body reacts strongly to smells and other chemical agents. What a blessing to finally have a name and a reason to what was happening to my body, and to know it isn't just all in my mind as so many people thought it was. Thank you Dr. Hamilton.

The good doctor goes into detail about certain agents and what they do to our bodies, but she does not stop there. She also gives us some pointers on how we can counter-react these chemicals, what vitamins to take, which foods to eat that will flush chemicals out of our bodies and what to avoid, and how to detoxify our homes, and cleanse our bodies. The author covers every area you will need to help you move to better health and avoid contamination in the future. Excellent!
I'll tell you the truth, this book was too long in coming and in my opinion should be read by every person on the face of the earth. The information will astound you and make you more aware of the dangers in the world you live in. I strongly recommend this work, you won't be sorry.

This cookbook is wonderful! Be warned - many of the dozens of recipes are time consuming to prepare. This isn't a cookbook if you are looking for a quick cake. However, the end results are indescribably good. The General Robert E Lee cake, a lemon cake with lemon filling and frosting, is one of the best things I have ever eaten! The book also contains recipes for some of the cakes I used to beg my mother to make: Devil's Food Cake, Harvest Peanut Cake, Lazy-Dazy Cake, and Pineapple Upside-down Cake. There are illustrations, old pictures, and interesting tidbits of information accompanying the recipes. It is as much fun to read as it is to use.

I have made and tasted about 20 of the recipes in this book and they are all straightforward and delicious. Some of my favorites include the Hoot n' Holler Whisky , Carrot , and Whacky Cakes. My Mom has had a copy of this book for years; I'm delighted to have found one for myself. The recipies are definitely not lowfat but, my, are they good!

For the person that said this book can be read in five minutes. Yes, its easy to understand, but don't underestimate your dog will not understand these commands. Dogs are more intelligent than you give them credit. Perhaps, there in lies the lesson. This book is well worth it for anyone to read and help train their dogs up in the proper ways. I very much enjoyed the book and I know others will find it most effective.

I enjoyed this pocket guide, the commands are simple, and easy to remember, yet powerful. The explanations are very clear, and I learned new commands that I never even thought of, until now. The artwork makes this book fun, Edison is cute and comical! Definitely would recommend this book to anyone of all ages, as it is a great teaching tool for you and your companion friend. Two Thumbs UP!

I have just rieceved my new book and I am so disappointed I read the book in five min and I take time to understand and learn the book It does not go into depth. The book would be good for someone who has a dog already trained and needs to look back to remember the command but to teach a dog from this book would be inpossible in my eyes.

              5 out of 5 stars A Pooch Plus Bible!!.......2000-09-21

This is the best quick reference for anyone who owns a dog, and especially if you are thinking about getting a puppy. An absolute must read! Using this simple manual will help anyone establish a healthy and happy relationship with their puppy, who will grow up to be either a well-behaved, responsive dog or a spoiled nuisance. I wish I had read it first before I treated my one-pound Toy Pomeranian puppy like a kitten instead of a dog. Now it takes more persistence to switch this adult seven-pound boomerang of energy from some of his "annoying" behavior (he's a mouthy little monster) to being better mannered. The progress we have made is all due to Claudia's guidance and explanation of how dogs perceive us owners as well. Everyone should carry this little guide in their shirt pocket or in their purse. Don't leave home without it!

              1 out of 5 stars great for children's projects.......2007-03-10

There are some great ideas in here if you are planning on doing the projects with grade school children, or if you have little to no creativity. Otherwise don't bother with this book

5 out of 5 stars Great craft ideas for VBS.......2006-03-06

I bought this book for craft ideas for VBS and I can't wait to use it in July 06. I found so much I will have plenty of ideas for several years for the 7th and 8th grade class.

                Book Description

Yoga in Focus captures the essence of yoga through perfectly positioned figures in meditative black-and-white photos. The first part of the book presents a range of postures, each across two-page spreads: a full-page photo accompanies tips on positioning, commentary on the benefits of the posture, and advice on breathing techniques and proper focus. The book’s second half presents original posture sequences to refine one’s daily practice and special sequences to relieve specific conditions including headaches, back pain, and stress. A tribute to yoga practice rather than a structured introduction, this book emphasizes the beauty and power of yoga. In all, over 25 original posture sequences and 400 gallery-quality black-and-white photographs are featured.

4 out of 5 stars Good guide to yoga practice.......2004-09-08

I had looked at a lot of books for my home yoga practice, and this one seemed the most practical with a good variety of poses, both simple to more advanced. A lot of the books seem to have the same simple poses or very few poses described. There is a little bit at the beginning about the philosophy of yoga, but most of the book is about the asanas. There is also some introduction at the beginning about equipment and proper breathing. I liked that each asana has a full two pages devoted to it, one page describing the asana in detail, with benefits and variations. On the facing page is a full size photo of the asana. The photographs are clear, and pictures are shown for different parts in a sequence, like for sun salutation. Towards the back of the book, there are courses of different poses, some just for regular practice and some for remedial work, like to relieve backache or reduce menstrual pain. There is also a course for pregnancy. I liked that there were many courses to choose from (sixteen daily courses and at least ten remedial ones); that helps decide which asanas go together and makes for a varied practice.

Although this book gives great descriptions of the asanas, it is probably more for someone who has had some exposure to yoga previously. Some of the poses are a little more advanced for the brand new practioner (shoulder stand, for example), and not much is given about the history and philosophy of yoga besides asanas, if that is what you are interested in. I was not so much interested in background philosophy and history as I had read about that in other yoga books. I wanted a book that I would still use as I progressed from a beginning to an intermediate practice.

I love the small size of the book. There is a lot of information in a book of such compact size. I like that I can easily pack the book when I travel so I can practice yoga when I am away from home. My only complaint is about the binding of this book. It is difficult to get it to lie flat, making it hard to use while you practice. Also although the courses provide a small picture and the name of the various asanas, if you cannot remember all the details of a pose, you have to flip back and forth between the descriptions and the course outline. The way I remedied the situation is I had the book spiral-bound for a small fee at the local copy shop making it easy to lay flat and flip back and forth during practice. Buying a used copy of the book in good condition from amazon marketplace made the entire cost still less than what I would have paid for a new book at the local bookstore.

Each play addresses contemporary and historical problems without providing any easy answers.
