5 out of 5 stars A Born in the USA type Hero, a great read........2006-09-26

Inspiring autobiography that left me in awe of his tenacity to achieve his goals. A self driven teen ager to a military life where he fought the dull assignments until he got what he wanted; putting his life in one of the highest risk assignments of World War II. One of many other brave men no doubt but clearly writes a book placing the reader there with him.

4 out of 5 stars A fine contribution to WW II history.......2006-09-09

This book is a fine contribution to WWII history. Mr. Hubbard shares his personal experiences as a boy during the Great Deppression in America and as a young man flying dangerous B17 missions over Europe. This book is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars One man's journey through WW II.......2003-09-01

This is a very interesting work highligting one man's experiences during WW II as he went from being a teenager to eventually flying 25 combat missions as a gunner on a B-17.
What makes this book unique is the perspective on the war as seen through the eyes of an individual as he makes his way from the U.S. to the Canadian Army and how he eventually gets transferred to the US Army Air Corps. The book chronicles his his day to day experiences along the way - the problems of survivial, both large and small, the love affairs, the training, waiting, the bombing missions and his eventual return to the U.S. You will find this book to be an easy read with a new perspective on a subject that is usually treated from a more macro point of view.

    Book Description

Why do so many American women allow themselves to become enmeshed in the standardized routines of technocratic childbirth--routines that can be insensitive, unnecessary, and even unhealthy? Anthropologist Robbie Davis-Floyd first addressed these questions in the 1992 edition. Her new preface to this 2003 edition of a book that has been read, applauded, and loved by women all over the world, makes it clear that the issues surrounding childbirth remain as controversial as ever.

    5 out of 5 stars Necessary reading.......2005-10-17

If you really want to know what to expect when you're expecting, read this book and Henci Goer's Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth. If you'd really like to remove yourself from the technobirth machine, read Ina May Gaskin's Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Spiritual Midwifery. If you've always thought you might want a natural birth, read Peggy O'Mara's Having a Baby, Naturally. And remember this one thing: If you really (really) want a natural, unmedicated birth, don't give birth in a hospital.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and thoughtful reading experience!.......2000-10-10

If you are a woman looking for a thoughtful review of our modern birthing culture this is a wonderful book. I have read a lot about birth options, perspectives of the birth experience, and midwifery history and philosophy but went away wanting for more. My desire to really explore an informed text about our birthing culture was finally satiated by this book. I am not an anthropologist by training and yet found the book accessible, educational, and challenging. I really suggest this book be read by everyone interested in the birth experience, partners, attendants, birthing woman, or children of technocracy.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing look into the technocracy of birth........1999-04-04

This was a paradigm blowing must read for any woman. A fluid read and with intense narratives. The most educational book I've read in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Exposes Obstetric care as a disempowering ritual.......1999-02-24

The majority of obstetric procedures, from putting on a hospital gown to the birthing position itself, are unnecessary and sometimes dangerous rituals that are perpetuated by an authoritarian system in its desire to maintain control over a virtually uncontrollable process. Robbie Davis-Floyd has studied these rituals of birth; why taking the ride to L&D in the wheelchair sets up an invalid mindset in the laboring woman, and how the lithotomy position robs the woman of her birthing power, forcing her to rely on the medical professions to deliver her baby for her.

It is powerful stuff and difficult to accept, but truth sometimes is.

          Book Description

Through a combination of engaging photographs, short essays and cowboy poetry, Ranch Dog: A Tribute to the Working Dog in the American West celebrates the integrity, personality, love of work and loyalty of the working ranch dog. These working dogs represent many different breeds for cattle, sheep and goat herding, including the Catahoula hound, the Queensland cattle dog (heeler), the border collie, the Australian shepherd, the black mouth cur and, of course, the occasional mongrel. When in their element, doing what they have been bred and trained to do, there are few things that can compare to the sheer joy and amazement one experiences while looking on in disbelief as these tireless dogs round up the herds. Wonderful photographs depict the freedom, landscapes, horses, livestock and riders that share the range, and the adventurous and beautiful lifestyle, that belongs to these unique dogs.

2 out of 5 stars Fun book for the price.......2002-01-11

I added this book to one of my purchases at Amazon and had a really good time reading through it. I could relate to certain parts of the writing but I enjoyed the photography most of all. In the end I have not recommended it to others.

5 out of 5 stars Pays tribute to the working ranch dog.......2001-02-04

Short essays and cowboy poetry pay tribute to the working ranch dog in a title which may prove a cataloging challenge, but an attractive library addition. These dogs represent many breeds and have been trained for ranch work; Ranch Dog supberly celebrates their work.

5 out of 5 stars Reflecting on Working Dogs.......2001-01-16

What a refreshing, unpretentious book sharing the life of the working dogs through poetry, prose, and photography. The poetry Murdock selects to illustrate the lives of working dogs made me laugh--and made me cry. Her snippets of the working dogs life on the ranch are enlightening and poignant. Burgess' photography is a treat to behold. She captures the subject in its environment, alternately funny and heartbreaking, such as the old "retired" dog that was gone when next the author visited. Through the chapters of the book, I traveled all over the Southwest and West meeting remarkable dogs and their owners.

Thank you Marianne and Nancy for this touching reflection on human's best friend.

3 out of 5 stars Though not a "cur" it is not "Best in Show" either.......2000-12-18

I am one of those people that believes there will be dogs in heaven. Nothing competes with a dog's greeting when you come home. A wagging tail, a wet tongue on your hand and the occasional vocalization of joy all combine to make the world a better place. For me the two AKC groupings of herding and working dogs are my favorite and "Ranch Dog" is an accolade to those amazing dogs whose lives are defined by the challenge of ranch work.

Ranch dogs, by nature, are full of energy and enthusiasm, but Murdock fails to capture that in her writing. Her writings of the dogs and the people on various ranches, while interesting, are uninspiring. I wanted more stories about the feats of these dogs. I wanted to know more about the various breeds that the ranchers used (the Catahoula, the Heeler, the Border Collie, the Australian Shepherd, etc.). I wanted to know more about the training of these unique animals. Murdock's writing was missing a lot. However, Nancy Burgess's black and white photos capture the faithful, industrious, intelligent and affectionate soul of these dogs and the poems about dogs from various authors are delightful. Though not a "cur" "Ranch Dog" is not "Best in Show" either. Conditionally recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Dogs that Do.......2000-12-05

After reading through this small treasure by Marianne Murdock and Nancy Burgess I was impressed by the definition of these dogs by what they do not by how they look or how they represent a particular breed.

Shortly after reading this book I saw the film "Best of Show" which represents the "worst" of dog's relationship to man. It is a pleasure to read about the relationship of the working dogs to the working men and women still living the western life.

The poetry in the book, by Marianne Murdock, specifically The Bath, Chasing Rabbits and the very personal The Spirits of Dogs creates visual images laced with Western lore and ideas usually buried in history.

This is a small book and would make a great gift for anyone who truly appreciates "real dogs" and the Western way of life.

            3 out of 5 stars It's all metric!.......2006-03-24

The weapon described in this book looks like it would be of great utility to own, in times of need. The drawings are clear, as are the instructions. The design was carefully worked out so that partisans could manufacture the weapon covertly, with parts distributed among many small shops, and in great quantity. And, most importantly, the steel stock used are all very common sizes of material, easily available at any steel supply house IN EUROPE! However, none of the materials called for are available in America! I love the book, however, when the Ummah forces my family into dhimmitude, I will have to die in place, since this book won't help the resistance at all.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for second pregnancy -- or third or fourth..........2007-09-09

This is the only book I bought during my second pregnancy. It was perfect for me since I didn't really want the "what's developing this week for the baby" books this time around. The selections for this anthology are really fabulous. Many poems and short stories. Many I identified with -- many I did not, but could sympathize with all. Was great to read before climbing into bed at night. Helped me feel connected to all the pregnant women in the world. (I have a list of my favorites in Listmania! -- "Best Birth Books")

1 out of 5 stars uninspiring and vulgar.......2007-04-24

I opened this book wanting to be inspired and nurtured during my pregnancy. Instead I found my self offended and bewildered by senseless poems and uninspiring stories. I had to close the book. I hope my review is so poor only because I found the worst it has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars The other side of pregnancy.......2004-07-07

So many books focus on the physical changes of pregnancy. This book prepares you for the spiritual journey to motherhood. This book is perfect for writers, artists, and others who want to savor this special time in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift book for expectant mommies!.......2003-11-05

Whether you're pregnant yourself, looking for a gift book, or want to relive life as a pregnant woman, this is a wonderful book. Stories, poems and essays range from the contemplation of motherhood to the glory of a round belly. It's the first book I've seen for pregnant women, by pregnant women, about pregnant women and it's no holds barred: honest, inspiring, touching, real. Buy it, read it and pass it along.

              4 out of 5 stars Great Stories.......2003-09-29

This books provides a nice range of different pregnancy stories and poems. I like that after each story/poem, it encourages writing topics. I have heard from many people that, during pregnancy, it is hard to write about the experiences- even for those who usually write. (I found this to be true myself.) Many of the stories seem to capture the rawness and emotion of pregnancy. A very interesting read. I have non-pregnant friends who have enjoyed reading this book also.

              Book Description

An exploration of the ways in which Michelangelo created himself. "Often whimsical, yet deeply erudite, Barolsky's treatment of Michelangelo's nose as the center of his autobiography, self-creation, and iconography is a stimulating and suggestive book"-Lectura Dantis "What gives such sparkle to Barolsky's account is its constant movement to very diverse themes, which all are connected, still, with his central concern, Michelangelo's self-image and his art. So, when he discusses Hegel and Pater on art as self-expression, Montaigne's visit to Italy and his view of Socrates, Michelangelo's gift giving, and the relation of Michelangelo and Machiavelli to Pope Julius II-all these seemingly various themes take us back . . . to the Renaissance notion of the creation of an artistic persona and Barolsky's account of why that culture placed great value on this achievement."-The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism "Barolsky's book has given us a compelling view of Michelangelo as a kind of proto-Romantic 'Ubermensch' participating in the often terrifying epic of his own creation."-Italica Paul Barolsky is Commonwealth Professor of the History of Art at the University of Virginia. His books on Renaissance art with Penn State Press include The Faun in the Garden: Michelangelo and the Poetic Origins of Italian Renaissance Art (1994), Giotto's Father and the Family of Vasari's "Lives" (1992), and Why Mona Lisa Smiles and Other Tales by Vasari (1991).

3 out of 5 stars a compelling goal without solid footholds.......1998-12-08

Barolsky proposes that Michelangelo invented himself. This self-creation combines allusions to Socrates, St. Paul, Moses, God, Dante, and David. Michelangelo apparently constructed, or perhaps scuplted, the image of himself that comes down to us through Vasari and his descendents. It's an interesting and provocative thesis which undoubtedly has some merit. However, this book delves into untethered speculations - or that's my impression without doing the research myself. There's a lot of "mights" and "very well could haves" and a lot of appreciating ironies that are admitted to be unlikely, if not impossible connections. This kind of thing works with a more playful tone (a la Rem Koolhaas's "Delirious New York") but fails to convince and leaves the reader to sort the interesting trivia from the half-inspired speculations.

                  Book Description

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, through the depression years and coming to adolescence during the turbulence of World War II, Art Katz, in his quest for the meaning of life, began a journey toward Truth that climaxed significantly and symbolically in Jerusalem.

Through the diversity of Marxist, pragmatist, and existential ideologies and philosophies, as well as merchant marine and military experiences, Art was brought to a final moral crisis as a teacher, able to raise, but not answer the groaning perplexities of the modern age and his own heart.

During a leave of absence, on a hitch-hiking odyssey through North Africa, Western Europe and the Middle East, the cynical and unbelieving atheist - vehement anti-religionist and anti-Christian - was radically apprehended by a God whom he was not seeking. The actual journal, Ben Israel - Odyssey of a modern Jew, recounts the breaking into consciousness and ultimate apprehension of an unsuspecting and resistant 'son of Israel.'

5 out of 5 stars An absolute pearl........2007-01-04

Raw, beautifully ruminant and observational account of one intellectual Jew's search to find truth. This book has some adult content since it is essentially a series of journal entries from a tumultuous time in Art's life. A must read for the intellectual elite, the modern Jew, and those struggling to find truth. Not for children.

4 out of 5 stars Candid, No Embarassment Concealed, Account of Inspiration!.......2006-06-30

In an untouched, diary format, Katz describes his mindset and world view as it slowly develops over time revealing every embarassing shortcoming as he desribes his journey from an aetheistic, anti-Christian, Jew to the born-again Christian that he is today. One is struck by how selfish and self-absorbed he was until he received the promptings which led him to a greater understanding of himself and ultimately about the nature of a loving God.

This is a great source of encouragement not only for Jews who have converted or who are contemplating doing so but also for anyone who has fallen on hard times self-inflicted or otherwise. This man's testimony shows that there is always hope and that no one is a "lost cause". All you need is faith in yourself and in God.

One of the better autobiographies I've read in a while.

5 out of 5 stars The Journey .......2006-05-15

Is there such as a Jewish Christian? Yes, indeed. And this also I wondered, before reading Arthur Katz's testimonial book. It doesn't really matter so much that he be a Jew, although only from a cultural perspective, but that he represents the true seeker.

The genuine evolution in the author's narrative tone through the book, his psychological portrait, his humanity, his inner live, are presented to us in the way of short daily annotations.

This is not fiction, it is real. And we are given a wonderful window into the heart and soul of a man. But, of course, in the end it all comes up to you, the reader, to decide how to take his story.
If you are another seeker, an honest one -regardless of your cultural background-, I strongly recommend this book. If you are already a sincere Christian, this will surely identify with your own search, sometime along the path of your live. As it did to me.
And for the curious, those who lead complacent, sedative or self-deluding lives, it is also a great read, a travel book where you are sure to find some character that you may have found along the way in your own trips in Europe or Israel.

                  Enjoy it whoever you are.

                  1 out of 5 stars Don't waste $0.01 on a used copy as I did.......2003-11-16

This book is written by a very self-absorbed man with an extremely protracted adolescence. He wanders the earth backpacking a la 70's style looking for himelf and the answers of the world on this jouney. He has many affairs on the way, impregnates a woman, while a wife is left back at home in a mental institution all during the jouney.

Apparently he proposes that he found all the answers he seeked at the end of the book---he converts from Judaism to Christianity. Although he didn't seem to really have much understanding about Judaism at the start. I don't get how he arrives at this conversion, he waxes on so poetically, as the beatnick poet he imagines his life to be. And I am convinced he's just as messed up at the end of the book(where he claims he's found Jesus and the answers to his great quest) as he was in the beginning. Or more so.

It disgusted me as a Jew that some guy---a selfish loser--- treats it all so poorly. And takes himself this seriously.

5 out of 5 stars One of my best reads ever!.......2001-06-21

I highly recommend the reading of this book for both religious and non-religious people alike. It is thought provoking, entertaining, and probably for some, life changing. It honestly is one of those books that years from now, when you are sitting around with your friends talking about memorable books and movies, you will think of with great fondness.
