In the post-women's movement period of the 1990s, many parents, even those committed to gender equity, are "amazed" at the seemingly inborn differences between the genders. And most parents committed to raising their children free from gender bias give up when the kids are in preschool. Barbara Mackoff, in Growing a Girl, takes to task these postfeminist ideas. She stresses that, instead of focusing on gender, parents should see children in terms of their individuality, while at the same time wearing "gender glasses" and teaching their daughters to be aware of society's gender biases. Mackoff, a consulting psychologist, suggests the concept of "equalist" parents, who create equal opportunities for their daughters in a loving, supportive way. Mackoff gives readers specific, valuable tools for raising spirited, strong daughters and helps parents teach their daughters to enjoy being girls without limiting the opportunities that lie beyond society's gender bias.
Customer Reviews:
Best book I've ever read on raising girls.......2007-07-13
The last reviewer appears not to have read this book with an open mind. Clearly they are stuck on the issue of women working or staying at home-which is by now a mute point. We know that women who work outside the home raise children who are just as well off as those who stay at home. In fact, the idea of just one adult staying at home and doing the majority of the work of raising chidren is fairly new in terms of human experience, and is rather ineffectual. In fact, children of mothers who work outside the home are very often better off, especially if she has the support of those around her. Such children have more social experience, more role models and care-givers and mothers who have more self-confidence, better social skills, more social support, and in some cases a better income for important things that enrich a child's environment such as health care, educational opportunities, travel etc. Also, the demonizing of mothers who opt for assitance with child care is so frought with paranoia and mistrust of others, it's ridiculous! Perhaps this person should study the issues rather than make assumptions based on archaic thinking passed down through recent generations. Get your information from facts, studies and experts. Which, by the way, the author IS an expert. She is not only a "working mother" but a psychologist (meaning she has a doctoral degree-the highest level of education you can earn) who works directly with girls and their families. Only a fool would dismiss what she has to say on the subject. As a grad student with experience raising girls, this is the best book I've ever read on the subject. The author brings humor, realism and pratical advice to this difficult task. And, my favorite part, she makes you THINK About your own assumptions and helps you question the assumptions of society that end up limitng girls' potential. Apparently some people don't want to have their empirically unsupported assumptions challenged. If you are one these peope, then don't read books by experts on subjects you have already made up your mind about.
Honest but obvious.......2006-09-24
I appreciated the author's honesty and candor in describing her thought processes while raising her daughter. My problem with this book is that the conclusions of the book are obvious. The author self-admittedly spent much of her time torn between the urge to fight gender stereotyping by encouraging her girl to be as boyish as possible and the realization that urging a girl to always be boyish is pretty much the ultimate rejection of feminine worth. This subject has been sufficiently hashed out over the last decade or so, and to me the conclusions of the book seemed painfully obvious. Raising children is a difficult and disorienting task, and I appreciate the author's attempt to clarify this issue, but this is old news.
Growing a Girl: Seven Strategies.......2005-07-28
This book seems like it was written 20 years ago. It talks about making your daughter stronger by not dressing her up in "girly clothes" and encouraging sports. Girls of today are well beyond that 1950's behavior. My 8 year old expects that she will be president someday and plays boy's little league and soccer. This book is useless in 2005.
The dumbest book I have read about child-rearing.......2003-03-12
This working woman with her one child in daycare thinks she is an expert about child-rearing. Her depiction of her frenzied life--with her daughter playing only a minor role in it--is sickening. In the opening scenes, she tells a humorous tale of her attempt to raise her daughter without stereotypes, i.e., by giving her trains instead of dolls to play with. Well, guess what happened? Her daughter arranged the trains in a circle and invited them to tea! What a charming story, except that Mom didn't pick up on the inner message of this. Instead, she writes an entire book denying her daughter's reality and trying to convince us that we, too, can raise someone like her daughter, who grows up conflicted, has problems on the daycare playground, and is filled with unnamed terrors. No, thanks.
I think perhaps the most annoying aspect is this author's one-page dismissal of women who stay home with their kids. She has decided that the only reason we stay home is so we can bake cookies for school parties rather than buy them. Believe me, there are many reasons for choosing to raise one's children personally--love, commitment, a desire to mold our kids our own way. (Kids raised by loving mothers often do not eat ANY cookies, since they are bad for one's health.) As far as our being stuck at home--nothing can be farther from the truth. We have the whole world at our disposal, we are free to go wherever we want, and I pity anyone who is "stuck" in a cube all day while their kids are being raised by minimum-wage workers who are "stuck" in daycare jobs because they lack the skills to do something better. I have raised many more kids than this author (both boys and girls), and it is my hope that this author's daughter can escape the agenda that has been dumped on her. The author's own descriptions of her daughter are neither "strong" nor "spirited."
Practical advice - includes info on opposing views too!.......2002-02-07
The author has done a tremendous job of taking many experts' views of the "right" way to raise a girl, discussing their merits (pros/cons), and then giving her own recommendations. She includes specific information and tips for situations you're likely to encounter (from Barbies, to adults commenting on how beautiful your child is, to playground and friendship struggles). She doesn't come across at all with a "raise your daughter this way....or else..." attitude, but she does really get you to think about how and why you choose to react and how important it is that you understand your child even if you don't agree (empathy). A bonus is that many of the strategies apply to both boys and girls....and the chapter for fathers is truly wonderful (especially if you're unlikely to get the father to read an entire book). Also, unlike other books, this book takes you right from your daughter's infancy through teen years and beyond. It's a book you'll probably read over and over as your child reaches a new stage of development.
Bottom line: You'll learn practical tips and strategies to help keep your daughter's self-esteem strong from preschool through teen years and beyond. This book has been the favorite among my friends with girls. Best wishes to you and your girl(s)!

Beautiful book with doable recipes.......2007-05-13
This was a treat to myself at Christmas. It's a beautiful book, well worth the price, with recipes that most people would be able to make without a lot of trouble. No long laundry lists of ingredients!
Betty Crocker Christmas Cookbook.......2007-02-13
I had borrowed this book from the library and kept renewing it because I liked it so much. Finally I decided I should just buy my own copy. Has some very good recipes in it and I like that it has a lot of colored illustations in it. So many cookbooks nowadays just have the recipes but no pictures. I like to see pictures to get some idea of how it looks and also to get serving suggestions.
Betty Crocker Christmas Cookbook (Betty Crocker Books).......2007-01-18
Excellent recipes. The punch recipes were especially good.
PERFECT Christmas cookbook!!! .......2007-01-10
I LOVED using this cookbook this past holiday season. I made so many things from it, and they all turned out delicious. I received many compliments on the things I made using this recipe book. There are so many fun ideas that I had to restrain myself as I was choosing recipes! Just about every recipe could be used through out the year also. Having this recipe book definately made my Christmas a more fun! I can't wait until next year ;)
Great Cookie recipes.......2007-01-05
Of all my Christmas cookie books, this one was the most used. I gave it only 4 stars because there was a lot of other material in it besides cookies.

This book is so beautifully done -- the photographs, the how-tos -- that even if you don't intend to do the full blown projects, you can channel your creativity and your baby mementos into something amazing with the author's help. Great baby shower gift!
What a cool book!.......2007-08-13

B is for 'Baby' . . . and 'Best Buy'.......2006-12-01
This book is a gorgeous collection of decorating projects and ideas for babies' rooms -- perfect for a shower or holiday gift, or as motivation for your own adventures with a glue stick. Suzonne's How-To's are fun and easy to understand ( as opposed to some designer project guides that leave you with a tortured mess of twigs and dough, and glitter in unmentionable places. Or . . . maybe that's just me ). Whatever your skill level, rest assured that 'B is for Baby' will inspire an artistic confidence you didn't know you had, and fulfill a creative outlet you didn't know you were missing. Have fun !
Anyone can do these projects!.......2006-11-18
I received this book as a gift and really was excited!!! I always want to do craft projects, but sometimes feel like things are going to be too complicated. This book makes it seem easy and doable, and has inspired me to start making some craft projects right away. The step by step instructions are easy to follow. Doing small craft projects is really satisfying and I find it better for relaxing than meditating or a martini!!!
Particularly suited for the novice crafter and will hold immense interest for the experienced crafter as well........2006-11-05

These 'budget friendly' crafts projects range from 'A is for Announcement'; to 'D is for Decoupage'; to 'K is for Keepsake Box'; to 'Q is for Quilt'; to 'Z is for Zoo Animal Storybook'. Each individual project comes with a 'Tools & Materials' list; step-by-step project instructions; and a color photograph of the finished project. Whether it's 'J is for Journal' or 'W is for Wall Frieze', this superbly presented and enthusiastically recommended project book is particularly suited for the novice crafter and will hold immense interest for the experienced crafter as well.

Helps parents cut through the drama of teenage daughters and maintain positive emotional connections
Because adolescent girls tend to talk so much, parents often assume that girls are easier to communicate with than boys. In reality, much of what teenage girls say is the opposite of a healthy expression of emotion--often taking the form of fighting, brooding hostility, or, at times, overinvolvement. While recent bestsellers such as Queen Bees and Odd Girl Out explore the social and psychological pressures that inform teenage girls' behavior, they provide little or no guidance on how to manage the communication problems that develop between parents and their daughters.
Why Girls Talk--and What They're Really Saying does that and much more. Based on the authors' years of clinical and research experience, it:
- Deconstructs the ways girls communicate with their parents--especially mothers
- Arms parents with tools for cutting through the chatter and drama and getting at what their daughters are really saying
- Helps moms and dads to avoid becoming overinvolved in their daughters lives and to set healthy boundaries

Praise for the authors' previous book Mom, Can I Move Back in With You? "This book worked for me. It is educational in the best sense of the word. It helps us act more effectively and adaptively in our family environments. I recommend it highly." --Mary Pipher, author of Reviving Ophelia All sweet and light one minute and full of irrational fury the next, teenage girls can be a roller-coaster ride of high drama and low moments. And because they tend to talk more than adolescent boys, parents often assume that daughters are better than sons at communicating their feelings. In reality, it is often difficult to sort through the noise and accurately decode their intended messages. Even though she may never say it directly, your daughter needs your understanding and support now as much as she ever did. As a parent, you owe it to your daughter to keep the lines of communication open to maintain positive emotional connections with her, and this book can show you how. It provides you with the tools you need to: Cut through the drama to what your daughter is really trying to tell you Avoid becoming overinvolved in your daughter's life Help your daughter connect with her authentic self and become more capable and self-confident
Customer Reviews:
From a father of a teenage girl, thank you!.......2005-07-19
This book explores raising teenage girls with sensitivity and insight. My wife and I found it positively inspiring. We would recommend it to anyone going through adolescence with their daughter.
Loved this book.......2005-07-19
It is so helpful to have an honest discussion about girls without making them out to be vicious and mean. I found it extremely informative and I now understand the need to help my daughter learn to express her anger as well as other emotions. I gave the book to several of my friends who have daughters. I highly recommend it!
Disappointing..........2005-02-27
I found this book disappointing. While it says nothing objectionable, it also says nothing new.
Author of Survival Meditations for Parents of Teens.......2005-01-05
I'm all for "how to" types of books, especially for parents of teens. It seems as though we forget how to connect with our kids as they become teenagers or we need a new road map. As a therapist who works primarily with teenaged girls, and a writer myself, I would recommend this book to mothers of girl teens.

A story of friends who worked quietly behind the scene.......2003-10-16
Ilse Margaret Vogel's book about her tense final months in bombed out Berlin near the end of World War II is well worth reading. Unlike most WW II books detailing life experiences, Vogel captures the youth and excitement of she and her friends that even war could not diminish.
Vogel's skill as a storyteller is evident as she recalls how she and her friends worked in small ways to protect or shelter those pursued by the Nazi SS. Their efforts, seemingly small, saved lives. The personalities come to life in glimpses of the risks they take and the small victories they share. Some survived, some did not. But the difference they made is significant.

Luba by Michelle McCann.......2004-05-18
Truly a rare addition to classic children's literature. McCann's ability to interpret this complex history of human tragedy into a meaningful children's story is unique. Daily the world reminds us of the terrible things that people do to each other. It is more important than ever, that children learn the world needs heroes.
Beautiful illustrations.......2003-10-02
I really enjoyed this beautifully illustrated, touching children's book, a great gift for children and adults. Should be part of a any good book shelf, next to the other intelligent and artful children's books.

Inspiring, Heroic and Educational.......2003-08-15
This beautifully illustrated children's book addresses the strength of human character that can emerge during even the worst of times. The presentation of this story engages it's young reader while effectively educating them about a very important time in history. I was impressed with Luba's ability to elicit empathy in the people she dealt with, allowing them to become more decent and humane. The story of Luba's loving and heroic soul belongs every school library.
