Dollars critical review.......2007-08-28
I found this book to be very informative, some of the contents i was already aware of, you see my brother-in-law was Eldredge S. Trent one of the main characters in the book. I was able to locate the author, Carl Cossin and called him to express my thanks for his service and sympathy for all the pain and suffering you went through. I am a retired Air Force NCO and can appreciate all these boys went tbrough. I just thank God they were able to make it.

A shocking portrait of the greatest genius of this century. So intensely guarded and obscured were the details of Einstein's personal life that it took the authors six months to gain permission to quote from Einstein's correspondence, and even then many letters could only be paraphrased. The book reveals that the Nobel Prize-winner whose genius and work for peace have long been associated with a kind of personal nobility had an adulterous, egomaniacal, and misogynist side with which very few people are familiar.

The myth of Albert Einstein.......2004-05-31
This a very good book. Two able researchers put their heads together and did all the research. The result is a fascinating picture of a rather unhappy man who had his moment of glory and spent the rest of his life chasing a wild goose--a unified theory. I wouldn't say they shattered the myth of Einstein, but they do point out that he might have had some help with relativity and did very little in physics in the last 30 years of his life--all the time he spent at Princeton, in fact--except deny the truth of quantum physics, probably the most elegant theory ever devised by the human mind.
My (small) problem with this book is that the authors expect us to believe that Einstein, a PhD in physics, 1) had never heard of Brownian motion prior to his paper on molecules in 1905; and 2) published his paper on relativity in 1905 with no footnotes or attributions because he "was unaware of the need to give credit where it was due" (p. 105). Really.
This book did a lot to support my long-held view that Einstein's reputation is vastly overrated. He was a great physicist during the first part of of the 20th century, but there were many others, and he built on the work of many others who went before him and others who worked with him.

It is inevitable that Albert Einstein's "private lives" will fall under the dissection knives of historians and biographers. There are already dozens of excellent biographies of Einstein on the market, ranging from the extremely scientific to the extremely personal. As the Einstein Papers Project continues to explore the personal correspondence of this remarkable scientist, we can expect the personal revelations to continue. Einstein, as were all great figures of history, was a very complicated person, and a very human one.
In this work, the authors take a very personal look at his life between the high school years and the publication of special relativity. Specifically, it focuses on his first marriage, to Mileva Maric'. Much about this relationship was kept intentionally hidden for years by Einstein's secretary Helen Dukas, and scientist Otto Nathan, who became the de facto protectors of the "Einstein image." Since they had known him in the era of his marriage to his cousin Elsa, they understandably sought to minimize and downplay any factors from his younger years that might reflect negatively upon him, and a failed first marriage, with an illegitimate child, could certainly be seen as less than flattering.
Highfield and Carter's book draws heavily on the work of the Einstein Papers scholars Stachel, Renn, and Schulmann. Einstein's voluminous correspondence from those years has shed much new light on such questions as the fate of the daughter Liseral, but without providing definitive answers. Considerable time is also spent on the issue of Mileva's role in the development of special relativity - topic that exploded with the force of a bomb in recent years.
Einstein has been dead for nearly half a century now, and it is certain now that his private life will be subjected to as intense scrutiny as has special and general relativity. This book, along with Overbye's "Einstein in Love" take a respectful but straightforward approach. Any Einstein admirer or general fan of the history of science should read this book.

This is the book I give to my newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease patients. To a man and woman, they all say that it was extremely helpful in understanding the disease. The format is easy to follow, while being informative. This is a frightening disease, and an excellent example where knowledge is power. Dr. Lieberman's book gives one that knowledge.

This was an interesting, early attempt at compiling a cookbook of Cuban recipes. Having the book in two languages may help your local library, but most chefs speak one language or the other -- the result is a lot of wasted space. The simple graphics and lack of photos are uninspiring and there is nothing here that will entice or motivate you. A better choice for contemporary Cuban cuisine: Three Guys from Miami Cook Cuban <ASIN: 158685433X>.

There's a wonderful Cuban restaurant on our neighboring island of St. Croix. So, I was thrilled to find this charming book. Easy to understand and filled with mouth-watering recipes to remove the drudgery of cooking. If you like this book, you'll love Angela Spenceley's two new cookbooks "Just Add Rum!" and "A Taste of the Caribbean". Both books are valuable additions to any good cookbook library.

Great description of events!!.......2007-08-23
This book is great so far. I'm only 4 chapters into it, but I enjoy reading it a lot. It really paints a picture of the accounts involved at Auschwitz. I read this book just before I go to bed and I have a hard time putting it down. If you've read any of the other books I have and enjoyed them and you enjoy reading about real life events, this book is for you!!
The factory of death........2007-04-07
The author was the prison doctor/pathologist for the Auschwitz facility. He did the autopsies on dead prison inmates under the demented Dr. Mengle.
This book is a disturbing story. As part of his duties, he also was a member of the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners that disposed of and burned the remains of the bodies killed in the gas chambers. The author was asked to do some terrible things. He revived a gas chamber child, only to find a German guard later shooting her. He examined two cripples and fed them, only to do an autospy on them later in the day. These are very disturbing stories and show the try crime of the Nazi genocide of Europe's Jews.
I think the forward puts the author under some focus. The author participated in the Nazi's plans for genocide. He saved his skin while others perished. Better to do as the 12th Sonderkommando did. Fight the people that were killing them. This shows the crimes of the Nazis during the war years.

This author skillfully recounts his mind-blowing, horrifying experience as the doctor of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando. He describes the terrible events that occurred during his time at the camp, but also tells about the kindness his fellow prisoners exhibited toward one another in a group effort for survival. It's a riveting tale.
This book is the best Holocaust book I've read.......2006-11-26
This account of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando is the best memoir I have read to date. It was very easy to pick up and read, and was nearly impossible to put down. Dr. Nyiszli is very factual, and gives careful testimony to his time spent in hell. I feel that I've learned more from this one book than I have in all the others I've read combined (as well as my college Holocaust class). Miklos Nyiszli is a hero for bringing this record into the public sphere.

As someone who has read many first-hand Auschwitz accounts, I found this the best. It is a rare look into the everyday functions of a systematic genocide; finely written to include the most interesting information. Also, it includes a personal look into the personality and brutal workings of Dr. Mengele from a viewpoint that no other account can offer.

Incomprehensible.......2000-04-12
For Dr. Nyiszli to bear witness to the day-in and day-out horror of Auschwitz, and still be able to write about it, is quite unreal. Working as a pathologist for Dr. Mengele in the confines of the crematorium compound, we read of the horrors of the camp, and how both inmates & guards coped.
Should be required reading!.......2000-01-04
Reading this book has completely altered my perception on the human being, individually, and as a whole. The events that took place in Auschwitz were so horrific and yet they mustn't be forgotten. Any person claiming a reasonable level of education must read this book. It will literally change the reader forever.
