Jungle Paradise, Almost by Skip and Chipper Carey took me on a wonderful visit to Costa Rica without leaving my living room. Their vivid descriptions of daily living; methods of transportation, the citizens, flora and fauna of the jungle, wildlife, and the ocean and tidepools transported me into their home away from home. Their personable narrative of exciting adventures, and refreshingly honest descriptions of interactions with friends and neighbors showed the authors' delightful outlook on life. Jungle Paradise, Almost made me want to visit this beautiful country. Read this book and let's go there!

5 out of 5 stars Founder of the New Parent Transition Program & Author of "Life after 'I Do!" loves this book!.......2006-11-09

As a Family Management Coach, I help first-time moms and dads create a new framework for their life because of all the competing demands on their time and energy. At the beginning of my program, I strongly and persistently encourage my clients to read Linda Mason's book BEFORE their child is born when they still have time to read and reflect on this life changing transition. Those that read it - always thank me for recommending it. The Working Mother's Guide to Life is a fabulously informative and thought-provoking resource.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Informative!.......2006-11-05

This book was purchased as a gift for my sister. She is a very busy mother of two and has told me that she was pleasantly surprised by how informative and helpful this book is. For someone who admittedly thought she had enough strategies and solutions of her own, she agrees that she learned more than a few new helpful tips from this book. She's already recommended it to friends.

2 out of 5 stars Seemed rather simplistic/obvious to me.......2006-07-10

I picked up a copy of this book because of all the great reviews. I have a 3 month old and started back to work a few weeks ago. Frankly, there wasn't much in here that I needed or didn't figure out on my own.

I am giving it two starts, instead of one, because everyone is different and what I thought to be obvious advice may be a revelation to someone else. The one thing I have learned about parenting is that you have to figure it out what is best for you all by yourself. And if you need a book to help you, then this would certainly be a perfectly good one to pick up.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely helpful!.......2005-12-19

As a working mother and mother of a 6 year old son, I found this book very interesting and helpful! Eventhough I'm from Mexico, and there are some cultural differences, being a mother is the same. Every time that I have the opportunity, I recommend the book.

4 out of 5 stars Working Mom to Busy to Read.......2005-12-13

I'm a full time working Mom of a 2 1/2 year old and I'm half time in graduate school. I did think that what I could read of this book was good. Best tips: leather furniture and hardwood floors to make cleaning easy. However, as a working Mom I just didn't have time to read this book. If I'm not working I want to focus on my son. An hour or so of cleaning, cooking, etc after he goes to bed . . . then repeat. This is a great gift if you want to show your support of a woman that wants to go back to work, but it can also seem judgmental to a woman that's just struggling to get by or wants to stay home. I remember receiving a book as a gift about "Getting Your Priorities Straight" from another woman. What was she trying to tell me?

If you're a working Mom and buying this for yourself then Good Show! If you're thinking of buying this for a gift for someone then be careful. A home made gift certificate for "a romantic night out with your husband" may be more appreciated.

    5 out of 5 stars I melt for caramel.......2004-10-06

When I found out there was a caramel cookbook from Chronicle Books, I immediately got a copy. One of my favorite flavors combined with one of my favorite cookbook publishers--how could I go wrong? As usual, Chronicle did not disappoint; cookbook author Peggy Cullen and food photographer Maren Caruso have served up one of the most decadent cookbooks since Marcel Desaulniers' Death by Chocolate series.

Caramelizing sugar can be tough. It can burn in seconds. It can seize up. However, I saw an episode of Alton Brown's TV show "Good Eats" that dealt with the subject. Alton and food scientist Shirley O. Corriher explained lots of science about sugar crystals, the upshot of which is: include a little light corn syrup and your caramel won't seize up. That simple. I checked right away, and the caramel recipe here calls for a few drops of lemon juice or a little light corn syrup; I was satisfied that the author knew her stuff.

I headed for recipes that looked like challenges--ones I was a bit dubious about. I inherently love caramel, so this cookbook has an unfair advantage when being judged. The nut brittle (I'm not overly fond of nuts nor the sickly-sweetness of most brittles) bowled me over; I couldn't stop eating it. The pears poached in port wine sauce (I'm not thrilled about the taste of alcohol either) were delicious.

Recipes range from the elegant (fresh figs with caramel and creme fraiche) to the simple (caramel popcorn), time-consuming (chocolate-caramel crunch cake) to quick (caramel dessert sauce). There are classics like creme caramel, creme brulee, buttercrunch toffee, and nut praline. There are also plenty of things I haven't seen in other cookbooks, like caramelized banana split-second sundae, caramel-roasted strawberry shortcakes, and chocolate souffle roulade with caramel whipped cream. (And oh, the caramel peach-bottom babycakes are wonderful!)

I can't think of a single negative thing to say about this cookbook. Cooks who aren't confident in the kitchen and prefer to keep things simple would find many of the recipes too complex, but even they could play with things like the nut brittle, caramel sauce and caramel popcorn. Some people might not be thrilled by the price-to-number of recipes ratio (roughly 50 recipes not including variations and decorations), but this book has a value that the flat number of recipes can't convey.

Cullen demystifies caramel and turns it into something doable--even easy for more experienced cooks. And that's pure, luxurious, delectable magic.

Excellent book with wonderful ideas. Easy to understand and great illustrations.

3 out of 5 stars Great fun designs, but not for beginners.......2003-01-26

This book is full of really wonderful, creative designs which the reader can replicate or modify according to personal preference. However, I found the instructions somewhat confusing and inconsistent in places. I found myself going back and rechecking something that I thought I understood. In addition, many of the designs use a stencilling technique. While this technique is explained in general terms, the book does not provide instructions for specific stencilled designs which use multiple paint colors. For example, a chair with a stencilled beehive is accompanied by a listing of 7 paint colors for the hive. Which color do I use first? How do I create the color gradations?

The designs and inspiration value are worth the price of admission, but beginners will need to seek out additional advice.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty, but needs more explanations.......2002-12-18

I fell in love with the chair on the front cover, and knew that the designs would be right up my alley. I enjoyed the pictures inside, and found them charming and inspirational. The colors are beautiful, and the whimsical designs quite appealing. Every time I look at the pics, I get excited about painting. That, alone, is a thumbs up in my opinion!

However, on a closer inspection, many of the same stenciled motifs were used throughout the various projects pictured, which was disappointing. Granted, they weren't used the same way, but I would have liked to seen more originality or, at least with all the stencils on the market today, more variety.

I am a beginning painter, so I want to know the whys of the methods I'm using. I found the description of how to prepare a chair confusing. The basic prep steps include using primer for previously finished pieces, sealer for unfinished pieces, gesso for all pieces (multiple coats for previously finished pieces), and then the base coat (multiple coats for unfinished pieces) before you start the decorative painting. I'm not sure the necessity of the gesso...why not just go from the primer, to several base coats? Is there really an advantage to that extra step, or is this just the authors' preference? It seems applying several base coats on top of the primer and sanding between would give you opaque, smooth coverage. I would appreciate a bit more insight to the necessity of the gesso.

I also am unsure of what "priming" entails. On page 7 it defines wood sealer and primer. It says the wood sealer is applied to prevent warping and bleed-through of knotty areas, and then directly below it says primer is brushed on to help seal and prevent bleed-through. There isn't enough explanation about the difference between wood sealer and primer, so I'm not sure which I'm to use before applying the gesso. Or do I apply wood sealer, then primer, then gesso, all before the base coats?

It also says to use an oil-based primer on previously finished chairs if unsure of whether the previous finish was oil-based. But, it doesn't explain why. I've since read in other books that this is because the latex and acrylic paints won't stick and will start to peel off, which apparently you may not find out until you've gone all the way to the finishing step. That would be devastating, so I think an explanation of WHY oil primer is a necessity should be better emphasized here.

I bought some gesso, and am using it between the primer and base coats to see if there is a difference in the outcome. I can't tell whether my previous stuff is oil-based or not, so I'm using oil-based primer on all previously finished pieces as a precaution. If there is a way to determine this, that would be great info to include, too.

I also think that there wasn't enough explanation about how to finish the chairs in order to protect the painted design. There are many types of "finishes" on the market. Is a varnish the same as a polyurethane? And what about the description of those...when I go to the store there are amber, yellow, and clear products. Also, are sealers and finishes one and the same?

Since the book appears to target beginners, a better definition of these terms, and what to apply and why would be helpful. Maybe throw in some specific brand names for wood sealers, primers, finishes and varnishes, so I can piece together what I'm looking for when I go to the store.

I give the book a thumbs up for inspiration and for instructions of the individual projects portrayed. If you like decorative painting on furniture, you'll enjoy looking at the pics in this book. However, I have found myself looking at other books to get more concise explanations of what products to use and why.

Don't let the attractiveness of this Better Homes and Garden book fool you. It's useful as well. My favorite parts of the book included the chapter on practical matters, such as planning for electrical needs for modern offices, and the section on room design that even included a full page blank graph for making an outline drawing.

In the last couple of years, the controversy over whether or not to vaccinate children has raged among the parenting set. Opponents say that vaccines don't work and that they often cause more harm than good. Proponents say that vaccines do work, and that the saving of lives and the general improvement in health of the vast majority far outweighs the low incidence of mishaps from vaccines. What Every Parent Should Know About Vaccines, by doctors and infectious-disease experts Paul A. Offit and Louis M. Bell, weighs in heavily on the side of vaccination, but it's also an important book for those parents considering not vaccinating their children. Each vaccine and the disease it prevents--from the standard ones that every child gets to vaccines administered only in special cases, such as overseas travel--is explained in detail. Offit and Bell explain and dismiss vaccine myths, as well as discuss up-and-coming vaccines for the future. This book will answer many of the questions that your pediatrician may not fully explain to you.

      Book Description

Here is a straightforward presentation of the facts surrounding the controversial topic of vaccines, a book that confused and worried parents can turn to for answers and reassurance. Most parents have questions about vaccines that doctors are too busy to answer, and too many parents, as a result, are not having their child vaccinated at all, thus putting them at risk. This timely book answers such questions as: Arent most of these diseases eliminated anyway? Should my child have the new chicken pox vaccine? Could my baby get a bad batch of the vaccine and end up getting infected?Comprehensive information on the history of vaccines, the diseases that can be controlled through vaccination, and the risks and benefits associated with each vaccine will help parents decide whether or not to have their children vaccinated and which vaccines to approve. With this essential resource, parents can make the right decisions for their childrens' health and safety.Paul A. Offit, M.D., is Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. Louis M. Bell, M.D., is the Medical Director of the Hospital Infection Control department at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia.

1 out of 5 stars Very one-sided- intended to brainwash.......2007-04-29

I agree with the one commenter who said she would like to give this book negitive stars! Being a first time mom, I am looking for books on vaccinations that list both sides of the story, and are not one sided. Not knowing which side this book was on, I requested it along with another book from my library titled "Vaccines- are they really safe and effective? by Neil Miller. I started reading Miller's book first, and couldn't put it down- he has almost 1,000 references from actual medical journals documenting his findings and statistics, and lists them as the facts they are- letting you make a decision for yourself. This book, by Offit, was very one-sided FOR vaccines. Although I have just started my research, what I have found interesting is that many people believe that the rate of these diseases dropped when vaccines were introduced (which offit claims in his book) when actual data states that the rate of people infected with these diseases was dropping for a while before the vaccinations were introduced due to better hygine and awareness. In many cases, the rate of people infected with the disease increased when people were given the disease.
I will keep looking out there for more books that can give valuable facts from both sides of the story, and this book wasn't one of them.

      1 out of 5 stars Utter hooey.......2006-05-17

If I could put negative stars I would. My mother bought this for me as a present when I was trying to figure out the vaccine thing for my children. I felt it was very superficial to begin with, but imagine my complete horror and utter DISGUST when I learned that Offit makes profits from vaccines AND was partly responsible for the marketing of the Rotavirus vaccine that was subsequently recalled because of causing intestinal blockage? And that he KNEW ahead of time that it was a risk and STILL voted to release this vaccine? It totally made me lose ANY faith at all left in him and the vaccine companies and made me go much more towards the not vaccinate side than anything else.

1 out of 5 stars Lies and Misinformation.......2004-11-18

Page 14 says enough in two places:
"SIDS causes about 5,000 to 6,000 deaths each year in the United States. Because the disease affects children between 2 and 4 months of age, there is often a temporal relationship between the receipt of a DTP vaccine and SIDS." Notice the authors do not say, "the disease USUALLY affects children between 2 and 4 months," or "MOST OFTEN affects children between 2 and 4 months." They plainly state that it affects (implying that it ONLY affects) children between 2 and 4 months. This is contrary to what we've been hearing from pediatricians and the Back-to-Sleep Campaign for years. SIDS affects children under the age of ONE YEAR. If the authors can't even get this fact right, how can they be trusted for their other facts?

I continue: "there has never been any evidence that such 'bad lots' actually existed." Interesting. I know of a pediatrician who reported a 'bad lot' to VAERS which caused the deaths of 4 or 5 children, all who had received their DTP shot from the same batch.

These authors are in the business of pushing vaccines. There is certainly a strong bias in this book, one that left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

      1 out of 5 stars Misleading Title.......2000-09-13

The sole purpose of this book is to convince parents to vaccinate their babies when and how the medical establishment/drug industry wants them to.

My baby girl's pediatrician loaned me this book stating that "it presents both sides of the issues." She mistakenly left inside a form letter from the MERCK VACCINE DIVISION saying that they highly recommend the book for parents to "dispel all of the misinformation" out there. In my opinion, everyone should proceed with caution when a multi-billion dollar conglomerate gives their stamp of approval on a book.

Don't bother using this book as a reference. It doesn't even tell you about the ingredients (like mercury, formaldehyde and aluminum) contained in vaccines. It truly insulted my intelligence by being so one-sided. There are other books I've read (i.e. The Vaccine Guide, by Randall Neustaedter, OMD) that give both sides of the story.

1 out of 5 stars Smoke and Mirrors.......2000-08-06

I just finished reading "Vaccines: What Every Parent Should Know". It was as I suspected; the usual arguments and half truths and snide comments about parents who choose not to vaccinate. I guess what surprised me is they are *still* saying that DPT doesn't cause permanent brain damage or death and there is no such thing as a hot lot! They also say that no one has *ever* died from the hep B vaccine -- I know a man whose 5 week old daughter died within hours after the injection! Everything else is pretty standard partyline fare. They do a neat trick with the references. They don't use footnotes, they just put a list of books in the back that they got their info from. That way you don't know what they are quoting and what they are twisting/making up (unless you are educated in this area). Who's going to take thetime to hunt through 5 books to find a reference? The book will very easily mislead a lot of unsuspecting, trusting parents. However, a couple of statements are so ludicrous it seems like anyone with a brain will figure it out. But parents looking for reassurance that vaccination is safe/effective will find it here. It's a good book to have on hand just to know what a pediatrican is likely to hit you with when you go in for a check-up or to use in a debate with uneducated friends and family when they question your informed choice not to vaccinate (or selectively vaccinate.)

The tragic story of Janusz Korczak, who chose to perish in Treblinka rather than abandon the Jewish orphans in his care, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1988. The new paperback edition includes a passionate introduction by Elie Wiesel that sets the tone for the inspiring saga of a man who introduced progressive orphanages in his native Poland, defended children's rights in court, and wrote classic works of children's literature and child psychology. Korczak lives as a moral exemplar in this fine biography.

            Book Description

The life of a moral exemplar comes alive in this acclaimed biography of the first known advocate of children's rights in Poland—the man known as a savior of hundreds of orphans in the Warsaw ghetto. A pediatrician, educator, and Polish Jew, Janusz Korczak introduced progressive orphanages serving both Jewish and Catholic children in Warsaw. Determined to shield children from the injustices of the adult world, he built orphanages into "just communities" complete with parliaments and courts. Korczak also founded the first national children's newspaper, testified on behalf of children in juvenile courts, and—through his works How to Love a Child and How to Respect a Child—provided teachers and parents with a moral education. Known throughout Europe as a Pied Piper of destitute children prior to the onslaught of World War II, he assumed legendary status when on August 6, 1942, after refusing offers for his own safety, he defiantly led the orphans under his care in the Warsaw Ghetto to the trains that would take them to Treblinka.

            4 out of 5 stars well researched.......2000-05-21

The book was almost too well researched, giving every minor detail of Korczak's life as well as those of his companions. It was, however, worth learning about a national hero from Poland.

4 out of 5 stars The King of Children gives insight into Janusz Korczak.......1998-08-05

After visiting Israel this summer I decided to read up on the philosophy of Janusz Korczak. I had never heard of him until I went to Yad Yayeled (The Children's Memorial) at the Ghetto Fighter's House. I found this biography to be a bit tedious in its approach to Mr. Korczak. It was at times overly wistful and non-critical. On the other hand, it is a great introduction to the subject. Janusz Korczak should be remembered for his commitment to the rights of children. As a high school teacher I found that his approaches to dealing with young people were profound, practical, and moving.
