3 out of 5 stars An interesting, but disappointing East Front epic.......2001-07-05

Until lately, it's been rare to find any literature on WWII from the Russian perspective...at least in Roman languages. Thus, Kaberov's first-person account of air combat and life on the front in the Leningrad sector of the Eastern Front is eagerly awaited: a rare glimpse of the trials of a young Navy pilot fresh out of flight school when Barbarossa opens in the summer of 1941.

The real strength of this book lies in the author's pointed attempts to "remember the heros": the book is full of anecodotes of Kaberov and his comrades, their deeds and their tragic demises. How the war affects a small village where Kaberov ditches his plane in one of his first I-16 engagements comes full circle, and offers both poignancy and a sense of patriotism and redemption.

However, the book disappoints aficianados of air combat in its frustrating lack of detail on the actual battles. There are few meaty descriptions of the aircraft flown, the tactics used, the planes' foibles and strengths, aside from a few brief comparisons of the LaGG-3 and the Yak, and a critical examination of the Hurricane, which Kaberov's unit flirted with briefly in 1942. Combat seems glossed over from first contact until one plane or another plummets earthward. One doesn't get that "describe the dogfight with your hands" feel that is a great part of the best 1st person accounts.

Also, there is a lack of operational detail, and aside from a few maps, the reader does not get enough of a sense of how the war was progressing at various points and why. It is true that Kaberov had a relatively low rank through most of the book, and might not have been privy to this information at the time, but since it is written in retrospect, some contextual detail of the war would have been welcome.

One interesting omission: Kaberov describes a desperate and successful aerial defense of the battleship Marat, yet fails to mention the ship was finally sunk just a few days later.

Still, this book is an entertaining, brisk read, and is far better than the complete absense of any Russian accounts of the war for Russia in the 1940s.

2 out of 5 stars It could have been interesting, but.........2000-12-18

If you like pure a propaganda then this is the book for you. That is a pity since Igor Kaberov seems to be by all means a brave and trustworthy pilot. It only seems to be so, that it has been impossible to write any unbiased or neutral text in former Soviet Union. All the Russians are devoted and brave and the enemy is always fearful and unskilled. If the bomber tries to evade Kaberov by going inside cloud he is at least treacherous by nature. Some of the details are hard to believe. During 1942 in one particular fight Kaberov and his mates shoot down several Finnish 2-motor Capronis. The exact date is not mentioned. There were no Capronis nor any 2-motor fighters in Finnish Air Force. I find, that it is a pity, that there is no neutral memoirs told by Red Air Force. I mean in style like the books of Pierre Clostermann or Helmut Lipfert. There must have been Many distinguished pilots, who had had a lot to tell, but maybe it is too late now. They must all be well over 80 by now.

Book Description

Egg and Ego is a lighthearted look at the nature of academic science. It is intended for anyone interested in biology but particularly for biology students who want to find out what is in store for them in the future. It starts with an account of one particular experiment, which is later opened out to introduce the excitement arising from recent progress in associated areas of biology. It then describes the everyday aspects of scientific work, ignored by philosophers of science. These range from cleaning up radioactive contamination, to how to fill in biohazard forms, to how newly appointed professors bargain for money. The "Egg" of the title refers to the science of developmental biology, which is the specialty of the author, and which provides the material for many of the anecdotes. The "Ego" relates to the vanity of the scientists themselves. Academic scientists have to struggle to maintain their research funding. To do this they must persuade other scientists that they are very good, and that means work at a good institution, publishing papers in the most fashionable journals and giving lectures at the most prestigious meetings. Success often goes to those with the largest egos and their style of operation is described in this book. The final chapter is about relations between science and the outside world in the shape of the media, illustrated by the remarkable "case of the headless frog". The author is a well-known scientist who has worked at both universities and research institutes. He has published over 100 scientific papers and an influential book about embryonic development: "From Egg to Embryo".

4 out of 5 stars A Review from a Student's Perspective.......2001-03-27

As an undergraduate studying biology and hoping to pursue a career in research I found this book both informative and shocking. J.M.W Slack openly reveals all the ins and outs of "Life in the Biology lab." I strongly recommend this book to anyone curious to what's truly in store for them if they choose to enter a field of science.

4 out of 5 stars An unvarnished view of life as a research biologist..........2001-03-16

Slack does a grand job of telling his story...life and living as a researcher working on problems of development. Slack has the ability to get you to grin as he talks about cow brains, growth factors, and other scientific adventures..."Where are the brains, Dad?" (You'll have to read the book to know what that means.) He also ably tells what it's like to be a scientist, as well as how one negotiates the politics and requirements of becoming successful as a research scientist.

The format of the book is interesting. It includes several chapters that address what it's like ("Ego") to be a research scientist, i.e., chapters 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10. He defines what he calls "good places," as well as who "good people" are in the scientific community. If you are a budding scientist, these chapters contain nugget after nugget of wisdom and insight. This book is worth the price for them alone.

The remaining chapters, 3, 5, 8 contain the essence of the research that Slack and his group do, thus the "Egg" portion of the book's title. There is good information about the role of growth factors in development, and a broad brush review of the essentials of some of the processes of development and their molecular bases.

If you are up for a good read about life as a biologist, then come on along. The only reason I didn't award this book 5-stars is that there would be a strong tendency for those not trained in the sciences to get lost in the technical aspects of the chapters on developmental processes. For most biologists, however, especially for upper division undergraduate and graduate students, this book is a gem!

4 stars for the non-scientist, and 5 stars for the science crowd.

Kudos to Slack for this great little book (though he seems to take a rather dim view of places other than research universities -- we part ways there). There is, I believe, too strong a sentiment among researchers (represented by some of Slack's opinions) that what non-researcher biologists do, i.e., teach, is not just different, it is "less than." It all comes down to what you choose to do for your own career, and how you define success for yourself.

I hope this review was helpful!

3 out of 5 stars Hilarious laboratory anecdotes and clearly written science........1999-08-18

Slack interweaves real science (Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology; frog and fly biology) with job descriptions of biologists and events in the laboratory to portray the fragile existence of academic scientists.

As a career university biologist myself, I repeatedly found myself asking the question as I navigated through the book "Why did I get into this business in the first place?" Slack's work will certainly prompt the budding young scientist to confront their own destiny.

To those interested in what professors do (since they are not in the classroom 8 hours per day), this is the book for you. Though clearly written, the science is still not for everyone; occasionally, Slack lapses into jargon without definition. However, the lighthearted and accurate picture of life in the laboratory will certainly provide enough entertainment for any reader, especially if you are undecided if you want to spend the rest of your life cohabitating with an academic.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for a would be biomedical researcher.......1999-08-17

This is an excellent book for anyone who might have some idea that they might want to be a professional scientist, working in biomedical research or as a professor in a university. Slack writes very well and he can tell an amusing anecdote. There is a some good science in it too. He is slightly curmidgeonly, perhaps, but I think this is part of his appeal. He tells it like it is. Read this book to find out that being a research scientist, perhaps unfortunately, is like being in the corporate world, and scientists have egos just like anyone else. There is a wealth of guidance for a new 'starry eyed' student. Slack is a good scientist and he portrays with a light touch some of the characters he knows, journals, government regulations and career structures. In addition he explains how he got into science and why. Anyone who is already a biological scientist will find much to chuckle at and I think that all biology students should read it - particularly if contemplating going on to take a higher degree. This book is an antidote to the ridiculous idea that scientists are 'higher beings' concerned only with 'truth'.

5 out of 5 stars The time to change the atmosphere of long-term care is....NOW.......2007-05-03

The concepts in this book work. The long-term care center where my mother spent her final nine months actually introduced me to the concepts of the Eden alternative, and indicated that many residents were feeling more content and "stable" with the presence of animals and plants in the individuals' rooms and throughout the facility. An indoor fountain was donated to the lobby. My mom was delighted when a parakeet magically appeared one day to become her roommate for many months. There were small birds in various rooms and lobbies, often donated by families or staff. Bunnies and dogs made weekly visits to residents, and each floor had a free-roaming cat. I especially loved one who occasionally cruised into Mom's room to check up on its feathered friend in the cage.

Long-term care MUST change to meet the needs of aging boomers, though they may be aging well for their years; bodies eventually fail as life closes. Mr. Thomas has the ideas and vision to change the course of eldercare so that the wisdom and dignity of the elderly can be recognized in society, enabling them to remain assets rather than burdens.

5 out of 5 stars Novel and inspiring.......2006-07-19

Anyone planning to place their family member in a nursing home should read this innovative book first. They author's insightful, yet relatively simple ideas show how a well designed nursing home can be a welcoming, life affirming place for your loved one to live. I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an medical supply business and often discuss nursing home related issues with my clients and customers. I found this book eyeopening and educational. If your relative is already in a nursing home, give the director a copy of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Caring For My Mom-A Daughter's Point Of View..............2005-08-15

The activities director at my mother's nursing home(Tn.) brought this author and his book's to my attention. The nursing home administrator is currently having the entire staff read this line of book's(The Eden Project). I ordered "Life Worth Living" and "Learning From Hannah", because I want to be a part of what will make mom's life and other's a better place to be. I started reading "Life Worth Living" and was honestly amazed about how educational this paperback really was. Not only is this book easy to understand, it's extremely interesting! I can only pray that some day all nursing home facilities realize how beneficial the "Eden Project" really is.

5 out of 5 stars Life Worth Living: How Someone You Love Can Still Enjoy Lif.......1999-12-10

This book will show how to turn a cold clinical facility into a warm, caring home. A place families want to visit, not make exuses to avoid. This truly can be revolutional. Anyone placing a person into a nursing facility should make sure they have Edenized.

5 out of 5 stars An Ombudsman's point of view.......1999-06-16

As a Regional Ombudsman, responsible for a large county in N. CA, I used this book to inspire people to form a "Family Council" in a sample nursing home and to lobby for the changes that Thomas recommends. The home adopted several of the changes and they transformed the home, once known as the worst in the county into the best. Several people emerged from years of depression, others simply took a whole new interest in life, others simply had whole-hearted laughter reenter their lives for the fist time in years. The Eden alternative is indeed the "recipe" for making one's years in long term care "worth living."

I bought this cook book after my first visit to Horizon's cafe when it was in Willow Grove, PA. The food was so good, I knew I had to have the recipes. I have made several items from it now, and I have yet to be disappointed. Many of the recipes include seitan, so if you aren't a seitan lover, many of the entrees won't be appealing. I've had meat eaters prefer my vegan jerk chicken wings to the real thing!

                                            Book Description

This pioneering work is the most comprehensive book on Black families in therapy to appear in the clinical literature. It is unprecedented in its attention to the cultural diversity among Black families, its emphasis on the utilization of cultural strengths in therapy, and on its application of the concept of clinical empowerment. Dr. Boyd-Franklin also gives thoughtful attention to the therapist's use of self and the subtleties which are often involved in the treatment process.

Highlighting the diversity among Black Afro-American families, the author's first five chapters explore a number of cultural issues including racism, racial identification, and skin color; extended family patterns and informal adoptions; role flexibility and boundary confusion; religion and spirituality. Numerous case examples provide rich illustrations of these topics. The latter part of the book further explores socioeconomic differences with specific chapters on poor inner-city, single-parent, and middle-class Black families.

An important contribution of this work is its elaboration of the Multisystems Model which allows family therapists to intervene
with Black families at multiple levels including the individual, the family, the extended family, church and community networks, and the social service system. Dr. Boyd-Franklin's clear straightforward presentation of this model will allow the practicing therapist to apply it to even the most complex treatment realities. In addition, this Multisystems Model has applicability to many other ethnic groups and treatment situations.

For training programs that include ethnicity, culture, and the treatment of Black families in their curriculum, this book provides a comprehensive syllabus. It is essential reading for family therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, medical practitioners, pastoral counselors, educators, and public agency administrators. For students and practitioners in these fields it provides a scholarly, incisive analysis that sets a standard for ethnicity studies in the therapeutic arena.

This affectionate, almost loving portrait of two of Britain's most distinguished and controversial artists is made all the more poignant by the fact that the biographer, art journalist and author Daniel Farson, died while writing it. Being about Gilbert & George, the salacious material is fairly unorthodox--the most shocking revelation is that George married as a young man and has two children--and for the most part Farson is almost apologetic about any intrusion into Proesch and Passmore's (their surnames) private lives. The first half of the book takes us from their childhoods in the Dolomites and Tiverton via their meeting at St. Martin's School of Art in the late 1960s to their current status as art icons. The second half sees Farson following them around--Moscow, Shanghai, Barnstable--as they exhibit around the world. Farson wisely highlights his admiration at the outset, and the reader is clear that this is no hatchet job. That said, he covers both the art and the lives with a straightforward professionalism that is never less than absorbing. This book is a fine tribute to Gilbert & George; equally, their closing words are a fine tribute to Farson: "On 27 November our dear Daniel died, not knowing how much we loved him (though we told him often enough)." --Nick Wroe

                                              Book Description

Gilbert and George are now recognized as two of the most important living artists on the international scene. In their sculptures, photography, paintings, and performance pieces, they have proven themselves to be both amusing and subversive social commentators. Immensely popular in their native Britain as well as abroad, their work has been the subject of major exhibitions throughout Europe, Asia, and America--including an upcoming retrospective at London's Tate Gallery. Now Daniel Farson, with the full cooperation of Gilbert and George, has written a candid and intimate biography of the artists; entertaining, anecdotal, and richly informative, it reveals what lies behind the art world's most famously inscrutable double act. Daniel Farson is an art critic, biographer, and best-selling author. His books include Sacred Monsters, Jack the Ripper, The Man Who Wrote Dracula, Never a Normal Man, and The Gilded Gutter Life of Frances Bacon, which Booklist hailed as "a deliciously vibrant portrait."

The best account of the duo's rise to fame, infamy and institutionalisation that you can buy, this is a warm-hearted biography of their life and work up until the mid-90s. The revelation that George was once married and led a relatively normal family life does nothing to dispel the suspicion that the pair remove their suits over the weekend and retire to the countryside anonymously. Certainly, the appear to have spent most of the 1970s being drunken party animals. It's amusing to listen to lots of critics initially finding them amusing, then alarming, then deeply moving, then warm and lovable, according to critical fashion. As with their art, the book has a melancholic air to it, as the author sadly passed away shortly before completion (the book stops rather abruptly and is finished with some travelogue essays on their exhibitions abroad). The closing observation by the pair that Farson did not realise how much they liked him is deeply sad. It's big and thick and well-written, and there is a nice selection of photographs. Best of all, you can order it from Amazon.co.uk for considerably less money than it costs to buy it here!

Marthe Cohn was a beautiful young Jewish woman living just across the German border in France when Hitler rose to power. Her family sheltered Jews fleeing the Nazis, including Jewish children sent away by their terrified parents. But soon her homeland was also under Nazi rule. As the Nazi occupation escalated, Marthe’s sister was arrested and sent to Auschwitz. The rest of her family was forced to flee to the south of France. Always a fighter, Marthe joined the French Army.

As a member of the intelligence service of the French First Army, Marthe fought valiantly to retrieve needed inside information about Nazi troop movements by slipping behind enemy lines, utilizing her perfect German accent and blond hair to pose as a young German nurse who was desperately trying to obtain word of a fictional fiancé. By traveling throughout the countryside and approaching troops sympathetic to her plight, risking death every time she did so, she learned where they were going next and was able to alert Allied commanders.

When, at the age of eighty, Marthe Cohn was awarded France’s highest military honor, the Médaille Militaire, not even her children knew to what extent this modest woman had faced death daily while helping defeat the Nazi empire. At its heart, this remarkable memoir is the tale of an ordinary human being who, under extraordinary circumstances, became the hero her country needed her to be.

I saw Marthe Cohn on Book TV and was inspired to buy the book. She appears to be a very tiny white haired woman, no wonder her family and friends were shocked to find out that she had been a spy for the free French and a genuine hero. She is blessed with a very sharp mind and a remarkable memory. Her story is so well written that it had me on the edge of my seat, in spite of knowing that she did indeed survive.

The most telling part of the book is where she describes the paralyzing fear she felt as she was about to cross into Nazi Germany. She somehow found the courage and made the crossing many times. Petite, blond and speaking impeccable German, she was easily accepted as "Aryan", even by one Nazi officer who was sure he could "smell a Jew". She was thus able to get much vital information and saved many lives.

This is a great book for anyone who likes adventure stories. The fact that it is true makes it all the more appealing. I couldn't wait to share this book.

5 out of 5 stars Vive La Marthe.......2006-10-09

On October 7 and 8, 2006, C-SPAN 2 featured this book and author on Book TV. The author, now in her mid 90s, spoke in impeccable English for about one hour without notes. Because she used the active voice, her adventures were easy to follow. It was a tour de force.

Her parents lived in Alsace when it was part of Germany. But she and her five older siblings grew up in Alsace after WWI when it was part of France. As a result, she became fluent in German because that was the language spoken in her home, and she became fluent in French because that was the language she learned in school. Despite her youth, her fluency in both languages made a perfect spy for the French resistance and French Army.

The book is about her amazing adventures as a spy and agent of the Free French. Despite her modesty, her actions reveal a woman of incredible physical and moral courage. This book and author should be the subject of movie or miniseries that would inspire young women to use their talents for great causes.

5 out of 5 stars A tale of courage and hope .......2006-05-14

This is a story of great personal courage in the midst of horrible tragedy. It is the story of Marthe Cohn who was born in the city of Metz, raised in a devout German- speaking Jewish religious household. Circumstances including the loss of her fiance led her to become a fighter in the French Resistance. Courageously she worked behind enemy lines to provide vital intelligence for the Allies.
In this book she tells her own story but while doing so tells that of tens of others with whom she shared a struggle and a world. At the end of the book she discloses what has become of many of them with the passing of the years.
For her courageous actions she was awarded the Highest French Military Medal of Distinction.
She comments at the end of the book that her maiden name translates as "Hope and 'Goodness'. Her life and actions certainly were an exemplification of her name, and evidence of the greatness of the human spirit in times of darkness and adversity.

I became aware of Marthe's story when told I was going to interview her for an article. I found the writing smooth, and the book a quick and educating read. As other reviewers have written, it is filled with events that are intense, suspenseful, sad and hopeful. This is an amazing true story that I'm glad Marthe decided to share.

5 out of 5 stars Behind Enemy Lines.......2005-03-27

Behind Enemy Lines is the story of the book's author Marthe Cohn. Written in novel-like fashion the story grips the reader from the first page and does not let get until the last. That Ms. Cohn, and the majority of her immediate family were able to survive the German occupation of France is miracle enough for any book. What she did after the liberation, joining the French Army, crossing the border by herself into Nazi Germany, spying on the Germans is truly a remarkable tale. Her life would make a great movie. We are very fortunate that Ms. Cohn took the time to write this book because this is the type of story that needs to be read and remembered by all. The only problem was one glaring historical typo that has Paris being liberated by the forces of Colonel Leclerc and his Second Armored Division. Leclerc was a general. I very highly recommend the book.
