The Indian Territory Journals of Colonel Richard Irving Dodge
Richard Irving Dodge Manufacturer: University of Oklahoma Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0806132574 |
Book Description
In these journals, Colonel Richard Irving Dodge, a well-known chronicler of western history and an authority on Plains Indians, provides an important account of conditions in Indian Territory from 1878 to 1880, a period of rapid transition. The Cheyenne-Arapaho reservation in present-day western Oklahoma was the center of Dodge's activity. His writings offer a first-hand record of the 1878 retreat of the Northern Cheyenne, the conditions endured by Indians who remained on the reservation, and the jurisdictional conflicts between Army personnel and representatives of the Office of Indian Affairs.
These journals also provide insight into Dodge's character, with reports of his official duties as a military man and of several landmark events in his family life. Extensive commentaries and notes by Wayne Kime provide further detail, including a history of Cantonment North Fork Canadian River, a six-company post Dodge established and commanded in the region.

Linus Pauling: A Man and His Science
Anthony Serafini Manufacturer: iUniverse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0595001017 |
Book Description
Linus Pauling could be considered the American cowboy of science. His approach to the discipline evinces the same pioneering spirit that drove the early settlers to explore and conquer ever-widening frontiers.Pauling has always been willing to take risks in proposing controversial new scientific theories: his ground-breaking work on sickle-cell anemia, the theory of anesthesia, chemical bonding, and his near-victory in the DNA race show the tremendous range of his professional talents and curiosity.
Pauling’s approach to life and his role as a public figure reflect the same brand of risk-taking and controversy. Active as a peace crusader and humanitarian, he has never hesitated to question the political or scientific establishments.
He engendered hostility among the scientists of the Manhattan project (developers of the atomic bomb), expressed opposition to 1943 wartime interment of Japanese-Americans, openly defended J. Robert Oppenheimer during the "Red Scare" period, and worked toward a nuclear test-ban treaty in the 1950s.
Anthony Serafini uses letters, documents, and interviews with Pauling’s contemporaries to take the reader through the many facets of Pauling’s life, including his student days, triumphs in chemistry, a 1962 Nobel Peace Prize, and more.

Most people think of yoga as a solitary activity that is inherently therapeutic. While that is generally true, yoga poses and breathing practices can also be prescribed for specific health problems—often in combination with dietary advice taken from Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine. Yoga Therapy is an essential guide for yoga teachers, advanced practitioners, and anyone who wants to make therapeutic use of yoga. A. G. and Indra Mohan prescribe postures, breathing techniques, and basic Ayurvedic principles for a variety of common health problems, including asthma, back pain, constipation, hip pain, knee pain, menstrual problems, and scoliosis. Yoga Therapy is one of the few books that shows yoga teachers how to put together appropriate yoga sequences and breathing techniques for their students. Mohan details how to correctly move into, hold, and move out of poses, how to breathe during practice to achieve specific results, and how to customize a yoga practice by creating sequences of yoga poses for a particular person.Customer Reviews:

The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook

Amazon.com
Christopher Kimball, editor and founder of Cook's Illustrated magazine, grew up during the 1950s in rural Vermont, where he spent many summers working as a farmhand. His most cherished memories were of the yellow farmhouse, where an eclectic gathering of workers met at noon for hearty meals of roast, potatoes, boiled greens, baking-powder biscuits, molasses cookies, and perhaps a pie. Kimball's memories of this time make for a book that is as good to read as it is to cook from.Kimball has painstakingly tried and tested hundreds of recipes for those childhood roasts, cookies, apple pies, and other nurturing farmhouse delights. In The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook, he reworks them for the modern kitchen (olive oil and hand mixers are allowed), while still capturing "the spirit of farmhouse cooking, using simple ingredients simply prepared."
Within each chapter, memories, recipes, and cooking techniques effortlessly roll into one another. In "The Dairy," we are whisked back to Kimball's 10th year, when he milked cows. Back then, "milk was stored in large cans set into a thick metal cooler filled with cold water." This description sets the perfect scene for milky recipes such as an American Baked Custard, several tapioca puddings, chocolate mousses, and cream pies. All adhere to the book's main premise: simple cooking with basic ingredients. Other chapters are solely devoted to meat, vegetables, baking, breakfast, cookies, fruit, and preserving, as well as a buying guide for purchasing the best cookware and kitchen tools. With so much research, and so many recipes and reminiscences, The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook really is an act of culinary love and devotion. --Naomi Gesinger

Very good intro book.......2002-11-04
If you get this with the Joy and you'll be okay.
The Cook's bible is the upscale version of the Farmhouse, the pots and kitchen equipment are more top-end; Farmhouse is how to make a kitchen on a budget -- your call.
Entirely dependable and entirely wonderful.......2002-05-26
Christopher Kimball founded and still edits COOK'S ILLUSTRATED magazine. I always learn something from COOK'S. Its laconic, thorough approach is Chris incarnate, and this unfussy spirit is echoed in "The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook" as well. With its yellow-checked cover, an old-fashioned typeface (Poor Richard, perhaps?), and illustrations reminiscent of woodblock prints by Rockwell Kent or Barry Moser, this is a conscious visual effort to call up the gentle past.
The recipes, however, are anything but nostalgic. Chris flatly debunks assumption after assumption about recipes we thought we knew. He is a demon tester, and has charted wonderful new paths to the same old dishes, making them bright and newly delicious in our mouths. Several "Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook" recipes have become family favorites in my home (especially the scalloped potatoes, which get requested on practically a weekly basis). This book is a stroke of good fortune for any home cook.
Good for Novice Cooks.......2002-03-27
I think this cookbook contains a lot of useful information for beginners. However, it contains nothing that good cooks don't already know. For that reason, I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.
Very Dependable.......2002-01-17

A Good Read for A Great Cause Sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, these stories, poems, cartoons and photos from up-and-coming writers are sure to delight pet lovers of every stripe and spot. For Pet Lovers Everywhere.......2004-02-21
The collection of short stories, poems, cartoons and photos covers an astonishing range of pet experiences. There are the humorous and adorable stories like "Puppy Talk" by Rebecca Adkins and "The Cat Who Could Not Be There, But Was" by Sandra Rieser, and recounts of beloved pets by Glenda Dickey and others.
Add to that several more provocative stories exploring other ways that humans interact with animals. These stories include "Spies and Other Mammals" by William Alan Rieser, which asks what are we really teaching dolphins when we train them for warfare. "Katie Collector" by Sarah Mankowski dares to go into the mind and into the grim house of a cat collector, and will definitely make the reader think about how much cat neglect could be avoided if humans made more of an effort to understand these troubled souls. "Too Many Dandelions" by Sarah Mankowski will make even the most hard-hearted reader tear up, as will "Humane Society" by Carolyn Howard-Johnson and "Song of the Backyard Dogs", Sarah Mankowski
And if that wasn't enough, there is a section of fantasy and science fiction pet stories, like the rest of the book, all worth reading. These are "The Seeker Cat" by Trish Allin, "Ramien" by William Alan Rieser, "My Dragonette" a poem by Valentina Ranaldi-Adams and the fascinating and disturbing story "Transmute" by Kim Richards
While it would be difficult to pick a favorite among so many memorable stories, I must single out the exceptionally well-written "The Gift" by Piper Timek, the three exquisite poems by Barbara Sabol and the Bartlett The Bookstore Cat cartoons by the very talented John Mankowski.
Paws And Whiskers is a fine book that includes something special for every pet lover. In addition, all profit goes to animal rescue.

Magic Molecules: How Drugs Work

Almost all of us have used medical drugs at some point to help make us well, or at least to help us feel better while we endure our illnesses. Yet most of them are mysterious to us, even those that are thoroughly understood by scientists. Susan Aldridge wrote Magic Molecules: How Drugs Work as a guide for scientifically literate consumers to help us understand these chemicals and their effects on our bodies. Looking at painkillers, antibiotics, cancer therapies, "smart drugs," and many others, she uses clear, plain language and illustrations to describe the mechanisms of these medications. But Magic Molecules is no encyclopedia. Aldridge includes fascinating discussions of related topics such as viral diseases, clinical trials, and the history of drug use, interwoven with her descriptions of the drugs we use each day. How does ibuprofen differ from aspirin? Why does chemotherapy make us sick? How come pregnant women have to be so careful with their medications? These questions and more are answered in this book that combines the usefulness of a reference text with the delightful charm of the best scientific works. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
We have all been drug users at one time or another. Drugs can be used as medicines, as food additives, for pleasure, and to protect our long-term health. With so many new drugs on the market and an ever-widening definition of what exactly makes a drug a drug, we should all be well informed about the drugs we use--how they work, their benefits, and their risks. This book is a unique guide for the general reader to the drugs of everyday life--from commonly prescribed medicines to recreational drugs (including illicit ones) and food supplements. The author examines how drugs interact with their targets in the body, where drugs come from, how they are developed, and what new kinds of drugs are on the horizon. She reviews all the major pharmaceutical medicines--painkillers, antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, anti-depressants, heart drugs, tranquilizers, and hormones. Much more than a consumer handbook, this volume conveys the fascinating science behind drugs in an easily accessible way.Customer Reviews:

`Kosher Meat` is a provocative and enlightening collection of memoir and fiction by a minyan of authors chosen by noted anthologist Lawrence Schimel. Longing to Belong and Stay Apart.......2007-01-16
Gay Jewish Writers Bare Their Souls.......2000-10-21
Contributors range from award winning poet Michael Lassell to author and '70s gay porn star Rick Sanford. Schimel is a full-time author and anthologist who has published more than forty books. In 1998 his anthology PoMoSexuals: Challenging Assumptions About Gender and Sexuality won a Lambda Literary Award. He is also a contributor to this particular anthology with his short story "The Minyan," which describes Simon's thoughts and reactions to participating in his first sex party with a group of men from his congregation. Simon finds himself glad to become part of something bigger than himself: "A Minyan of desire, men who no longer needed to congregate in clandestine secret to worship, but who could love and pray without shame."
Lassell's story, "My People," compares and contrasts losses suffered due to the Holocaust and AIDS. Michael and David meet for the first time and end up sharing their thoughts and experiences while touring the Holocaust Museum.
Through their interaction they discover the need to live and love in the present. "Mein Yidishe Tate," by David May, also explores the connection between two people, but with more of an erotic tone. In his story two lovers discover their secret language of desire--Yiddish. In "The Good Son," Brian Stein relays what it is like to be in a "mixed" relationship. Patrick meets Noah's family for the first time when returning home for his father's funeral.
At times the impact of the writing contained in Kosher Meat can be lost on the non-Jewish reader, but fortunately there is a glossary of terminology contained at the back of the book.
Shimel has proven himself to be a talented editor by bringing experiences to the gay ewish reader who may be feeling lost with the lack of representation in literature, as well as providing insight for the non-gay and non-Jewish reader into the lives of their lovers, friends, and family. Historically, gay men have focussed on the larger picture connected with the struggle for recognition and acceptance. Kosher Meat is an opportunity to learn some of the individual differences that make this community distinctive.
Copyright © 2000 ForeWord Magazine. All Rights Reserved.
Lambda Book Report, September 2000: "Eclectic diversity of story themes and styles is a difficult row for an editor to hoe; however Schimel manages to pull these stories together, grouping them so that the differences aren't as obvious as the sameness."

Kosher Meat is hot!.......2000-09-13
Erotic and intelligent writing is a rare commodity but Kosher Meat delivers. You may never consider the Holocaust Museum in quite the same way after reading Michael Lassell's "My People". If it were a movie, it would be a bravura performance of all dialogue and close-up shots. Understated, shimmering like a platinum print photograph, it leaves you breathless.
David May's "Mein Yiddishe Tate" begins as if it were "only" porn, the anonymous leather man in San Francisco stuff. The quality of the writing is transparent at first and likewise the emotional impact of the ending is unexpectedly powerful.
While wildly diverse, each of the stories adds to the mosaic of identity of being gay and Jewish-an issue that deserves quite a few books more-and a book that unexpectedly offers superlative writing. Recommended.
