Book Description
William Passmore Carlin (1829–1903), a native of Illinois, graduated from West Point in 1850 and served on frontier duty and in Utah before the Civil War. He began his Civil War career as the colonel of an Illinois regiment, served with distinction in early fighting in Missouri and Mississippi, and participated in important command roles at the battles of Perryville, Stones River, Liberty Gap, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Buzzard Roost, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Jonesboro, and Bentonville and at the siege of Atlanta. He was a successful and important brigade and division commander from Perryville to Sherman’s March to the Sea and into the Carolinas at the close of the war. Carlin remained in the army until he retired in 1893 as a brigadier general after significant further service in the West.
To supplement Carlin’s memoirs, the editors have provided two biographical essays and extensive annotation. They have consulted manuscript holdings in twenty-five repositories, including pertinent material from diaries, letters, reminiscences, and unit histories written by contemporaries. Readers of these memoirs have a rare chance to follow the career of an officer from the 1850s through Reconstruction and beyond.

Not what I expected..........2002-09-17
This book is poorly written and not worth the money. Too much time spent on vague ideals and notions of death and dying not enough substance. Dr. Bolen spends very little time sharing the actual patient's stories and too much time on the New Age doctrine she so voraciously clings to. A New Age sermon is what this book is, not a search for meaning during life-threatening illness.
The Right Book at the Right Time.......2002-02-27
This book is unlike any other I have read. The author is a Jungian analyst and clinical professor of psychiatry. To quote the book jacket, she "weaves myth, experience, and story to produce a book which at once illuminates the experience of the seriously ill patient and shows that facing one's mortality can be a life-transforming, and even a life-saving process". At a time when I was recovering from life-threatening illness myself, I heard the author speak at a lecture in Vancouver, and I found her use of classical myth as an allegory for illness to be quite effective. My friend Russell borrowed this book from me a few weeks before he died from cancer, and in a written note he described it as "the right book at the right time".
Accepting the challenge of the joy of living.......2001-07-18
As a businesswoman seeking to ensure that the daily demands of running a successful organization do not impede my ability to live a life of integrity, I seek to read books that inspire me to find joy in daily living. As I read this book, I was in awe of the stories of the survivors who have found life that much more as a result of their experiences in dealing with terminal illness. I applaud Dr. Bolen's wisdom in sharing the challenges that make a healthy person realize how weak we are in comparison to these heroes who live so richly in spite of events. I found the book a great joy and, in fact, am reading it again - just in case I missed something the first time. I am positioning myself to "recreate" myself in a 2nd career and this book inspired me to think of using my skills in some way to assist women who find themselves dealing with their own terminal illness or the illness of a loved one.
Danger and Opportunity.......2001-02-17
Early in this beautiful book, Jean Shinoda Bolen reminds us that the Chinese pictograph for "crisis" contains the ideograms for both "danger" and "opportunity." I've worked with clients who deal with life-threatening illness, and it is almost invariably true that this experience raises important "soul-evoking" questions. To explore those questions is inevitably healing, whether in body, spirit, or both.
As with any major crisis in life, we can either view the glass as half-empty, or see the gift that we are offered: the opportunity to re-examine our priorities, our relationships, and to do the soul-work that brings true meaning to life. Illness forces us to deal with "what we know in our bones" that we may have so far denied -- ways in which we are unhappy and/or self-destructive.
And those of us who do not have life-threatening illness can learn from those who do. As Bolen points out, "Life is a terminal condition, after all." So we can all benefit from answering the questions she poses: "What are we here for... What did we come to learn... What and who did we come here to love?"
Must read for anyone coming to terms with loss and mortality.......1999-03-29
Once again, Jean Shinoda Bolen has gifted us with her rich understanding of the human condition. In this book, she explores the psychological and spiritual value of death, profound loss, and illness without in any way minimizing the pain, angusih, and grief that come with these times in our loves. Bolen's book gives us a way to grapple with these passages on a deep spiritual, personal level, without turning to religious platitudes or what, for many, may feel like true-believer gloss overs. Instead, dying, illness, and loss are presented as psychological as well as physical events that resonate with rich personal and spiritual meaning and transformation, if we can allow them to do this. A wonderful book!

Great info on most beer styles.......2005-09-13
As a homebrewer, I found this book to be very helpful in creating recipes for various styles of beer. He goes into good detail about them and provides descriptions of a few primary examples of styles. If I have any criticism it would be that I would have done away with the "cooking with beer" articles at the end of the book (you can find better and more comprehensive info elsewhere) and instead added more info about obscure beer styles such as American Stock Ale, Baltic Porter, Kellerbier, Finnish Sahti, Kentucky Common Beer, etc.
Just what America needs: Beer Education.......2003-11-20
Author Michael Jackson is probably my favorite beer writer and critic. He has traveled all over America and the world, attending events, visiting breweries, and tasting beer. He has extensive knowledge on the subject of beer and he shares that knowledge in this book.
Jackson writes this book in a very simple, easy to understand manner. He doesn't use long words that require the use of a dictionary to understand. He keeps it simple while he educates the reader sbout the subject of beer. He begins by talking about the history of the world's greatest beverage, from the ancient days when beer was discovered all the way to the present day and the resurgence of craft- brewing. He talks about the various ingredients used in beer and explains how best to match beer with food. The bulk of the book covers each individual style of beer, with facts, trivia, and full- color photographs of beer labels, breweries, and other beer- related things.
Speaking of the photography, I found that it really adds to the enjoyment and understanding of the subject matter. It would not be very exciting to read a book about beer that contained nothing but text. The pictures really make a difference with this type of book. They keep the reader entertained and informed about different aspects of beer and the brewing industry.
Overall, this is one of the best books on beer I have ever read. Grab a copy and see for yourself how much there is to know and love about the greatest beverage known to man- beer!
Essential.......2002-02-07
Michael Jackson has long been considered one of (if not the) world's foremost experts on beer (so much so that those who love beer think of this Michael long before the putative Pop King Michael). And this book only adds to that well-deserved reputation.
Jackson's "Beer Companion" is loaded with color photos of many beer styles, labels, breweries, and watering holes and gives a decent history of the various brewing styles and tastes (very fascinating!). Mr. Jackson provides advice for what beers go with what foods (and it does matter) and suggests some good drinking establishments (and breweries) to visit if you're a world traveler. A good drinking companion indeed. Unfortunately, the book is somewhat large (and annoying to travel with) so you may be better off reading it first, taking some notes, and bringing the (also essential) Pocket Beer Guide with you instead. Enjoy.
Great overview of beer styles.......2000-09-15
Most of Jackson's other books are organized by region, shopping guides country-by-country. What makes this book particular useful is is attention to various beerstyles, with history and definition for each, along with listings of the classic examples. It's also a gorgeous book, with mouth-watering photos of beer and the geography of beer.
On another note, it's interesting that the only "reviews" that dismiss Jackson as a hack are unsigned. No e-mail addresses, just "a reader". Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

The Beer Snob's Bible.......2000-06-27
If you love beer, and I mean LOVE beer, then this book is a great read. Its for anyone who knows that beer is far more than something to get drunk with, something more than just an after work relaxer, but instead a fine drink that, much like wine, is to be enjoyed for it's flavor, many different styles, and history. It can be dry and boring at times, but when you're looking for information on the world's best beers and traditions in style and flavor, this book is quite handy. It's interesting to say the least, and certainly informs the reader on quite a large bounty on different beer throught the world. Get it, but don't expect too much.
Oh yeah, it might make you thirsty.

Pet Sitting Guide.......2007-01-09
I thought this book was just average. It is very over priced for what the book actually has to offer.
very informative.......2006-11-04
this book is very informative. it's a must-have for new enterperneurs interested in this field. i highly recommend it.
An excellent resource.......2005-08-29
When I first started thinking about starting my business in the early-mid 90's I picked up this book and devoured it. Then, it sat on my shelf as I pursued my 'corporate ladder' and took care of pets part-time.
When I decided to open my business full-time I again referred to the book. It really kept me inspired and ready to move forward. However, I did find that many of the suggestions were somewhat outdated -- using paper to track clients and schedules was never part of my plan -- but the basics of what they recommend you track/keep were great -- and I adapted the info to my on-line database. Since then, I've switched to a third-party service for an on-line database for client info, but the info I learned from the Mangolds' book was great.
I did read this book before Patti Moran's and tend to refer to it as the original 'bible' in my mind. But both books cover the same territory and give you a good overview of wht to expect. Petsitters are generally GREAT with pets and like the idea of spending time with them, but often have a hard time with the business side...this book is a great guide and reminder that you are in it to make money.;
As my business grew (http://www.peggiespets.com), I started helping other pet-sitters start or enhance their own businesses, ([...]) and this is a book that I include on my reading list for clients.
It's a good book that should be part of your learning library to continue to provide outstanding service to pets and their people!

MY SUCCESS STORY.......2005-08-12

Whether you are considering pet sitting as a full-time or part-time venture, this book is valuable. With time being a precious commodity in today's fast-paced world, I found that "The Professional Pet Sitter" provided clear-cut, easy-to-locate details on how to establish a successful service. As a further boon to launching a pet sitting career quickly and effectively, all appropriate business forms are included in the book. Thanks to the Mangolds' encouragement and expertise embodied in "The Professional Pet Sitter," my business is now in its sixth year and flourishing.

Book Description
It's been 10 years since the publication of John Hoffman's cult classic of urban scavenging, The Art and Science of Dumpster Diving. Now the Garbage Guru is back with an advanced course in the unconventional economics of exploring the trash for fun and profit. Just some of the lessons you will learn include: the key secret to dealing with locked dumpsters; how to dive for information and use it to humiliate corporations, politicians and other evil-doers; the unusual profitability of diving for movie and celebrity castoffs; the BIG-bucks potential of industrial diving, including the top 10 most lucrative places to do it; how to sell your dumpster-dived wares through the flea market of the 21st century - eBay; how to parlay dumpster diving consciousness into finding cheap property, supporting radical causes, even landing political office; and much more!
Customer Reviews:
The followup that shouldn't have been..........2005-02-17
Rambling and has very little useful information to warrant the title. The layout of the information is terrible and makes tummy hurt. The section on industrial diving, however, is decent. One can find much better information on the Net.
The Dumpster is where this book belongs!.......2004-11-15
This book is pure garbage. It is no more than the asinine ramblings of a deranged mind trying to further capitalize on past success.
Don't waste your money!
Not as good as the first........2003-08-07
This book was not as well-written or as useful as the first. I consider it to have been a waste of money because there was little in the way of practical advice.
Compared to the original, with its no-nonsense prose, clearly-organized chapters, sprinkled with philosophy, this book was a rambling diatribe that went nowhere. It did have some good tips for the EXPERIENCED diver who wants to make money faster by diving behind electronics stores, etc. but if you are not sure whether diving is your cup of tea, I would buy the first book and try those tips first.
Essays on Seattles "Ultimate Grunge" scene........2003-03-25
Don't be read this "Advanced Course" and think that you're going to learn anything technical. This book is creative non-fiction, a hint at a broader field of inquiry... a ... chant of a "No World Order" and a first draft of a Doctrine of Discards worthy of Foucault, as interpreted by Henry Miller.
I know because I was there. I'm Biker Bill (introduced on page 9).
Hoffman sent me the book in the mail today and I've underlined the sections where I'm mentioned, then I tried to reconcile my feelings of those days of Seattle's cultural rise and materialistic fall. Myself, I left in early '99 and gave it all up as a lost cause.
This is Fear and Loathing time! A real Hunter S. Hoffman treatment. He's not delusional or a liar... a bit manic, perhaps, but he's honest.
The best thing the reader can do is set aside all preconceptions about what the book "should be." Hoffman's trying to explain what we found in the back alleys of the U-district in the 90's. You want Grunge? It's deeper...
Dig a little. There's a cosmology to be discovered this ... heap of a book and it's not pretty.... this is a primal, raw, transcendental leap into America's Vomitorium of Unabashed Excess: the discards of society in the mental wards, linked loosely to his father's maybe encounter with Thomas Pynchon and the odd entropic chill of a hopeless task... to bring existential meaning to a life lived at the edge of a society hell-bent on devouring itself to death.
There's a Solid Waste Sutra in this collection of essays, and it may be different to each one who reads it. While I've never really agreed with Hoffman's politics, I still admired his brash ability to shake things up, keep ideas moving forward... shaking loose the cobwebs...
I still have the key he gave me. It's an arrowhead trophy of that time and place... Hoffman's rendering make it sound like we were among the Beat poets in '50s San Francisco. Perhaps we were.
So read the book and start a Enlighted Diver's Cult, maybe... DumpsterFest Weekend is the last weekend of school in the U-district each May. You meet a lot of nice folks there! Maybe get your church youth group or girl scout troop to join in!
But you must dive for your own wisdom. It's better than Yoga for stimulating the bloodflow to your brain.
Find that diamond for yourself.
It motivates you.......2003-03-20
Dumpster Diving: The Advanced Course takes trash picking to a level far beyond the occasional find on the side of the road. In a world of "extreme" games and "survival" shows this book could easily provide the base for a few Michael Moor-ish "reality" shows.
One of these shows would have teams competing to unveil the most corporate crime, another could have teams competing to create the largest Media moment for social/political/environmental change (not implying that any of these topics are separate from each other in any way). Less challenging and more network marketable would be something that goes along with the new Millionaire mania... "Treasure Trash". Who ever makes the first million through selling trash-picked items wins. The last show (and probably the least likely to air) would drop a few millionaire types off on an island dump site. These folks would have to live on our garbage for an entire decade. What could we possible offer someone of such wealth that would motivate them to play such an extreme game? Maybe they could be President of the United States...or President of the world? It wouldn't be very different from the way thing's are currently run... and the optimist in me says that maybe such a person would have some revelations over that time period, and actually DO something that positively affects the whole of the planet instead of positively affecting the hole in their own pocket.
Ok , enough of that ranty tangent! If you don't mind tangents, this book will certainly entertain you. Hoffman's backward and forward style artfully mirrors some of his explanations and beliefs about time, the power of thought, and the big effects of small actions. And you have to make it to the "Really, Really Weird Chapter." May your wings cause a hurricane of change!
If political change is one of your motivating factors, check out this book.
If the idea of recycling for a living, a GOOD living, motivates you, check out this book.
If living on less motivates you, check out this book.
If nothing motivates you - check out this book and get moving!

Customer Reviews:
The Joan of Arc of Israel.......2007-09-08
Hannah Senesh is known as the Joan of Arc of Israel, and is a national heroine in that little country of heroes and heroines.
Her poems are learned by heart in Israel, and her acts of courage, self-sacrifice and love for her people, has led to forests, parks, streets and settlements throughout the country being named after her.
Her diary, which begins when she was 13, shows her remarkable spirit, intelligence and love for the Jewish people and the Land of Israel.
At the age of 23 she returned to Hungary as part of an Allied to mission to save Jews from the Nazi death machine. She was captured by the Nazis and tortured to reveal more about the mission and her comrades, but never broke under these circumstances. Her heroic and cruel death at the hands of the Nazis is recounted.
The book is divided into several sections:
Memories of Hannah's Childhood by Catherine Senesh, the Diary, the Letters, and the acounts by friends and comrades of her courageous mission into Hungary, and her cruel death at the hands of the Nazis.
The final section consists of a reproduction of some of Hannah's finest poems.
Hannah Senesh was born in 1921 to an assimilated Jewish family. Her father, a sucesful journalist and playwright died when Hannah was 6 years old. She was enrolled in a Protestant school. The deteriorating situation of the Jews in Hungary led Hannah to embrace Judaism and Zionism-the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, which she was passionate about and dedicated to.
She became involved in Maccabea, a Hungarian Zionist students organization.
But she also loved beautiful clothes and ice-skating and was enthusiastic about life and living. She was interested in astrology, spiritualism and development of the soul.
The sensitivity of her gem of a soul and her intelligence is shown in this excerpt from her diary. It could serve as a testament to Hannah Senesh herself:
"There are stars whose radiance is visible on earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for mankind",-
Indeed in these dark days of the resurgance of anti-Semnitism and the Satanic international campaign to destroy Israel, it is comforting and inspiring to read her words.
Also interesting are Hannah's words about Jewish nationhood and Zionism:
'If we had to define Zionism briefly perhaps we could best do so in the words of Nahum Sokolow: "Zionism is the movement of the Jewish people for it's revival.'
In these days when Jews around the world are being pressured by evil forces to renounce Zionism we would do well to remember Hannah's words.
"We canot renounce a single on of our rights, not even if the ridiculous acusation were true- that Zionism breeds anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism is not the result of Zionism but of Dispersion. But even if were no so, woe to the individual who attempts to ingratiate himself with the enemy instead of following his own route. We can't renounce Zionism even if it does strengthen anti-Semitism...For only Zionism and the establishment of a Jewish State could ever bring about the possibility of the Jews in the Diaspora being able to make manifest their love for their Homeland. Because then they could choose to be part of the Homeland- not be necesity but by free will and free choice".
In these days it is so important to remember her words and her story.
Hannah Senesh, another remarkable woman.......2007-01-10
I had never heard of Hannah Senesh until I planned to go to Israel and was looking at possible places to visit. After I heard about her I wanted to know more. This book tells the story, in her own words of how a young Jewish woman came to be an Israeli hero. It makes me wonder if I too would have the courtage of conviction to stand up for something even to death. A very remarkable story indeed.
A star that lights the way for mankind .......2005-01-23
The story of Hannah Senesh is the story of a heroine of the Jewish people. This volume contains her diary including a record of her early years in Hungry and her time in Eretz Yisrael, two chapters about her by her mother, and chapters by fellow soldiers in the British Army from the Yishuv who served with her when they were dropped behind enemy lines during the War. Hannah Senesh was the daughter of a well- known Hungarian playwright who died when she was six. She and her older brother were raised by a very caring and devoted mother . In her school where she was outstanding she suffered from Anti- Semitism. And as Nazi power grew in Europe she moved toward a deeper connection to her own Jewishness, at one point announcing that she had become a Zionist. Her diary records her decision to go to Eretz Yisrael, and her years of education there at Nahalal. It is the diary of a spirited, intelligent and idealistic person. She volunteered to serve in the British Army Unit which was to be dropped behind enemy lines in the hope of helping rescue Jews. She and her fellow soldiers from the Yishuv were connected with the Partisans' struggle against the Nazis in Yugoslavia. The day before she was about to enter her native Hungry where she most hoped to help the Nazis entered and took control of Hungry. Upon hearing this news she cried. A friend asked her if this was because she was thinker of her mother. She said ' That the entrance of the Germans to Hungry doomed one - million Hungarian Jews to death. She was not wrong. The greatest share of Hungarian Jews were eventually murdered by the Nazis. She entered Hungry was captured, and was placed in prison. The Nazis brought her mother to the prison , and told Senesh that if she did not give them the information that they wanted the secret radio codes she had they would torture her mother before her eyes. She begged her mother's forgiveness, and she herself was tortured. But she did not give away the information. Eventually she was taken out and shot to death . All those associated with her admired her tremendous courage and integrity .
Her ambition was to be like her father a writer, but not a playwright but a novelist. Her love and dedication to the Jewish people in the land of Israel that she came to love so much are strongly apparent in the work.
Perhaps the best tribute to her is her own words,
"There are stars whose radiance is visible on earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for Mankind.'
Everyone must know Hannah.......2004-10-31
Hannah Senesh is the story every Jew should know, a heroic woman who fought the Nazis, parachutting into Europe in the worlds darkest hour, but beyond that her wonderful diaries tell the story of a young Jeiwsh girl finding herself, and her Jewishness amid the tumult of Europe and the Kibbutzes of Aretz Israel. This is a wonderful new volume on a true Jeiwsh Heroin, a message to all generations that evil must be confronted, ironically sometimes it is the most unlikely people that rise to the occasion. A heartrending book.

R E A D this book!!.......2004-06-23
For such a small stature as Hannah was, she is one of WWII's, strongest women. It is a must read for any philosophical or history buff. In addition, would make a great movie if someone would be wllling to do so.
Once you pick up this book you will devour it. Her life and who she was will remain forever in your memory. I envy her.
For 20 years Hannah's diary still remains so dear to my heart.
