The Papers of General Nathanael Greene: Vol. XII: 1 October 1782 - 21 May 1783
Nathanael Greene Manufacturer: The University of North Carolina Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Library Binding ASIN: 0807827134 Release Date: 2001-12-06 |
Book Description
This volume continues the best and most detailed study of the Revolutionary War in the South. The period covered here, 1 October 1782 through 21 May 1783, was a time of both triumph and travail for General Nathanael Greene. His greatest moment of triumph took place on 14 December, when the British evacuated Charleston, South Carolina. This event represented the culmination of Greene's campaign in the South, and he was hailed as a conquering hero. But the departure of the British also brought about a marked deterioration in relations between Greene and the government of South Carolina. Through a series of disputes with the state government, many of which are detailed in the 780 documents gathered here, Greene became increasingly convinced that Congress would be unable to maintain its authority in the South. While this concern proved to be unfounded, Greene did sense the states' rights impulse that would later come to define the region politically.

Copper overload is an insidious but increasingly common nutritional problem, says Ann Louise Gittleman, author of the bestselling Beyond Pritikin. She says that difficulty getting out of bed, midday slumps, mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety may be symptoms of a copper/zinc imbalance. She discovered this link after she encountered several patients in her nutritional practice--most of them women--who were not suffering from hypothyroidism, adrenal problems, or anemia (as she had suspected), but rather a mineral imbalance that was diagnosed after simple hair testing.Vegetarian diets, low-fat diets, and taking multivitamins--all ostensibly healthy moves--can make you more susceptible to copper overload. So do less-healthy activities, including drinking alcohol and coffee, taking cortisone, and being constantly stressed. (These activities sap the body of zinc, says Gittleman, jeopardizing the delicate zinc/copper homeostasis in the body.) Home tap water may also be overloaded with copper, and women are susceptible to absorbing copper from intrauterine devices.
To remedy the overload, Gittleman outlines an easy plan for renewing health and increasing energy. She includes a questionnaire to help determine if copper overload may be a problem for you; gives resources for hair analysis in case your doctor doesn't have one; instructs on how to read a tissue-analysis report; and outlines a sensible diet plan, including menus to keep the zinc/copper balance in check.
Up to 80 percent of the general population complains about fatigue; Gittleman's book may very well offer a simple solution for thousands of people. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
"This may well be a seminal book--a courageous eye-opener that could fundamentally alter our approach to the treatment of chronic fatigue."-- From the foreword by Michael Rosenbaum, M.D.
Answering the question on the minds of 75 percent of Americans, Why Am I Always So Tired?, leading nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman shows us how we canbe more alert and active by eliminating excess copper in our diets and increasing our zinc intake. The time-tested formula points out which culprits steal energyfrom us--namely trendy, low-fat diets--that make otherwise healthy people feel drained.
This revolutionary book offers Gittleman's insights into how we can modify our diets and lifestyles to increase our energy and prevail over the chronic fatigue thatplagues us with symptoms such as: anxiety, insomnia, skin problems, frequentcolds, and roller-coaster emotions. Using her research and breakthroughfindings, Gittleman helps us eliminate these problems and access the energywe didn't know we had.

Combat CFS & Fibromyalgia--Read this book..........2002-09-15
This was an exceptional book! What you have written makes so much sense that anyone complaining of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia would be wise to buy this book and read it. I am a certified physician assistant and a candidate for the doctor of naturopathy degree for healthcare professionals and I have referred several people to this book, Syndrome X and Going Against the Grain.
I think that all three of these books feed on each other and would be quite helpful to anyone, not only people suffering from chronic diseases.
These books give options for self-improvement without the use of multiple medications. The American people of today need to take a closer look at their treatment plans and get back to basics and fundamentals of natural health.
The medications and foods we eat are our biggest problems and these three books address those problems and methods of correcting them that are essentially easy, but will take determinated and an adjustment of will power....
Thank you to the writers for giving us such eye-opening books in an easy-to-read format.

Worth spending a few coppers on... (sorry, couldn't resist).......2000-11-16
It's true that the author doesn't have a lot of evidence from peer-reviewed medical journals. Still, the idea makes sense, and her profile of the typical person with excess copper, especially the "physically tired/mentally overactive" part, describes me quite well. It also describes a good friend of mine to a 'T'. (She even has the characteristic orangish hair color.) I can't say I'm a true believer, but I figure it can't hurt, so I might as well try it. The suggested eating plan seems healthy and simple enough, and the optional supplements - B6, C, zinc, manganese - aren't expensive or dangerous.
I agree with some other reviewers that this book is a bit light on content: it's less than 150 pages, with a fair number of anecdotes and some repetition. Also, the useful material is scattered all over the book; an index would be greatly appreciated. But if it works, it will be well worth the price.

--An entertaining and beautiful book--.......2004-04-12
There are five chapters in THIS OLD QUILT and they offer stories about learning to quilt; the quilting traditions of the Amish, Hopi Indians and African Americans; the warmth and love that comes from homemade quilts; the camaraderie of quilting bees; and many lovely stories and poems concerning the American tradition of quilting.
I was so happy to see many of the paintings of Sandi Wickersham that were used to illustrate this book. Sandi lives close by and much of her work is indicative of my area of Virginia. I own a few of her prints and it was fun to find them featured in THIS OLD QUILT. Several other artists including Diane Phalen's work was also used in the book. Their colorful and detailed quilting scenes add an extra layer of depth and pleasure to the book.
I poured over the vintage photographs that are mostly black and white or color enhanced. The ladies from the past are shown displaying their work or sitting among friends and quilting together. One 1936 Depression Era photograph is so striking! It's of a lady standing on the porch of a wooden cabin and displaying her gorgeous quilt that was made in the Dresden Plate pattern. The viewer senses that inside that unpainted cabin, life was probably pretty difficult, but this lady was able to make a work of art out of scraps, and a picture of her beautiful quilt endures for all of us to admire.
There are many lovely stories to read and enjoy, of both fact and fiction. My favorites are: HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT by Whitney Otto, THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB by Sandra Dallas and HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW by Jacqueline Tobin. THIS OLD QUILT is a treasure trove of quilting, memories and lovely pictures. I'm so happy that I treated myself to this endearing book.

Russian Dance: A True Story of Intrigue and Passion in Stalinist Moscow
Andrée Aelion Brooks Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0471648663 |
Book Description
From Manhattan to Moscow, this personal story of love and espionage takes you on a mesmerizing journey through the turbulent years of the early twentieth century.Advanced Praise for Russian Dance
"It is a rare occasion to have an opportunity-as painful as it is-to look into the USSR's tragic past via a personal story of two people . . . who were blessed with a real passion and punished for that with a far-too-real betrayal. Have those involved in the deeds of the inhuman state been publicly exposed and condemned? Very few were. A book like this is not just about history-it is a warning for the present and future. Russian Dance is yet to be over."
-Yevgenia M. Albats
Fellow, Davis Center for Russian Studies, Harvard University, and author of The State Within a State: The KGB and its Hold on Russia-Past, Present, and Future
"Russian Dance is at once riveting history and finely crafted literature-the tale of a brutally oppressive Russia, a communist-obsessed America, and Jewish survival. Her deft depiction of my outspoken grandfather suggests a larger evenhandedness in her handling of the grand scale of her narrative. Andrée Brooks has given us a brave, important, and irresistible book."
-Hamilton Fish
President, Nation Institute, and grandson of Congressman Hamilton Fish Jr., chairman of the special congressional committee set up at the close of the 1920s to investigate communist activity inside the United States
"A riveting, disquieting journey to Moscow during the tumultuous political and economic scene of the 1920s and 1930s. The story moves from New York, to Italy, to Moscow as we witness the interplay of intrigue, politics, power, money, and religion. Brooks captures national moods as only a cosmopolitan can."
-Gene Dattel
financial historian and former investment banker
"In Russian Dance, Andrée Aelion Brooks immerses the reader in the glittering art and theater life of New York in the 1920s. Brooks renders this world so strikingly, in all its wealth and splendor, that Bluet Rabinoff's decision to abandon husband and daughter and run off to Stalinist Russia with her lover, Marc, appears all the more shocking by contrast. The music and theater world of the 1920s will never come again, but it is vividly preserved in the pages of Russian Dance."

playwright and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Writing, Columbia University

Compelling Love Story Brings History to Life.......2004-07-14
In addition to chronicling the joys and perils of a great passion between two unique people, the book also serves as a cautionary tale about the unintended consequences of idealogy and nation-building. Moreover, it makes clear how historical events affect the most personal of issues: love, friendship, parenthood, loyalty. In sum, an excellent book, well worth reading.
