    Book Description

This book offers a close "inside" account of the psyche of Albert Speer, one of the most powerful men in the Third Reich and a close personal associate of Hitler. King, a Nuremberg prosecutor, offers firsthand observations based upon his encounter with Speer as a defendant at Nuremberg, as well as his 35 year relationship with Speer which ended with the latter's death in 1981.

Henry King was actually there. As a young man, he volunteered to be a prosecutor at the most important trial ever held. While in Nuremberg, he became fascinated with the one defendant who provoked reluctant admiration due to his aristocratic bearing and obvious intelligence. This fascination has continued throughout King's life. Now nearing 80, King is one of the few prosecutors still living and coherent. His memories and impressions offer an in-depth, close-up view of one of history's most important events.

    SPEER REVIEW

    by

    T.S. Peric'

"I knew Albert Speer better than any American," said Henry King during an interview, at 26-years-old, the youngest prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials and the author of "The Two Worlds of Albert Speer: Reflections of a Nuremberg Prosecutor" (University Press of America). It was not a comment filled with braggadocio. In 1946, fallow and a few years out of Yale Law School, King dreamt the dreams of many young men: accomplish a great deed or participate in a grand undertaking. Hearing about a friend's appointment to the American "team" at Nuremberg, King immediately applied for a position. Within a few months, he arrived at Nuremberg in the middle of a rainstorm and soon found himself collecting evidence against Erhard Milch, deputy chief of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force), who was charged with participating in Nazi slave labor and human experiment programs. King also interviewed Reichsmarshall and Luftwaffe chief, Hermann Goering and Wilhelm Keitel, the chief of staff of Germany's military high command. But frozen in King's memory were the interviews with Speer in a bleak interrogation room. "Speer was remarkably composed and unshaken; he seemed to possess an inner security and objectivity that many of the others lacked," King recalls. His composure was all the more remarkable because of the unique and key role he played in the Third Reich. "From 1942 to 1945 not only was he one of the men closest to Hitler, but he was also one who influenced Hitler's decisions. At one time in late 1943, Speer was reputed to be Hitler's heir apparent." Speer was unemotional, analytical, almost regal in his deportment. And unlike the other 20 defendants, he accepted full responsibility for his actions. "The question that haunted me then and still does today was why Speer, who appeared so decent and honest, was a close collaborator of Hitler," King writes. "Why had he served such a monster." Nearly half a century would intervene before King could offer any answers. Speer spent the next 20 years locked away in Spandau prison (kept incommunicado except to his attorney and family). After his release, he became a best-selling author with "Inside the Third Reich" (1970) a personal look into the sanctum sanctorum of the Nazi leadership and "Spandau: The Secret Diaries" (1976) which described his imprisonment. King continued practicing law, including a stint as general counsel to the U.S. Foreign Economic Aid Program, moving to the private sector and eventually settling in as a professor of international law at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. In 1966, King reestablished contact with Speer, but was unable to pursue his goal of a book until his retirement from TRW where he served as general counsel of Automotive Operations. King interviewed Speer repeatedly (including Speer's last interview, one month before his death in 1981). He consulted the Nuremberg records, his own notes and the literature on Speer and the Nazis. He also interviewed Speer's daughter and Traudl Junge, Hitler's secretary, who observed the interaction between Hitler and Speer. King's book carefully plots the conditions and events in Speer's life that drew the architect toward the summit of Nazi power. Speer was politically naïve, despite his aristocratic background, growing up in a cold, emotionless family, where intellectual prowess was demanded and ambition expected. Introduced to the Nazis at Berlin's Institute of Technology, Speer fell victim - as did millions of Germans -- to the zeitgeist of Nazi Germany before the war, a time when the promise of a new Reich seemed to represent an unfettered, glorious future. Speer's ability to organize was quickly recognized, reaching new heights at the Nuremberg rallies. His Pantheon-like "Cathedral of Lights," established Speer's chilling brilliance for displaying raw power. The final, crowning jewel, that firmly enthroned Speer to the Nazis fold was his artistic talent which brought him within handshaking distance of Adolph Hitler. Now, Hitler, the failed Viennese artist, would live vicariously through Speer's artistic triumphs. The Nazis' world was Albert Speer's first world, according to King. It was among the Nazis that Speer performed with remarkable thoroughness and unquestioned devotion, rising to the position of the Third Reich's Architect and Minister of Armament Production. Indeed, if Speer's artistic triumphs contributed to the physical manifestation of how the Nazi's viewed themselves, his star as Armament Minister shone even brighter. Experts estimate that Speer's contribution to industrial production lengthened the war by at least two years. Despite Speer's success, he began to enter his "second world," according to King, even before Germany's surrender. Speer was the only top Nazi to act in defiance of Hitler-and did so openly. He refused to carry out Hitler's "scorched earth policy" that would destroy the remains of German industry. Speer's second world is "where his horizon broadened and his values changed," writes King. "The second and succeeding world of Albert Speer was the horizontal world of the questioning spirit. This was a world of ethical and cultural values, a humanistic world . . . " In "The Two Worlds of Albert Speer," King deftly presents how naiveté, seduction and ambition drove Speer to the pinnacle of Nazi power. He concludes that Speer was clearly unique among the top Nazis that survived the war. Speer accepted responsibility for his actions and offered mea culpas for his sins. During and after his imprisonment, Speer pondered his actions and began to search for some degree of redemption until the end of his life. While supporting the prison sentence Speer received, King ably demonstrates that Speer was not some cardboard character from the Nazi past. Rather, he was a complex and brilliant individual who confronted issues of good and evil on a scale that most of us cannot imagine. King succeeded in his search for a great undertaking with his successful role in the prosecution of Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg. More than one half century later, he succeeds with another marvelous undertaking: the writing of "The Two Worlds of Albert Speer."

    Book Description

This scientific biography of Douglas R Hartree not only describes important events in his life but also outlines his contributions to a number of fields. He is best known for his "self-consistent field" theory for atoms, a theory he later used for the much more difficult problem of predicting the behavior of a magnetron. When Fock pre-empted his work on exchange, he began research into radio-wave propagation. Hartree was very interested in the process of computation. When he learned of a differential analyzer for solving differential equations, he first built a model using Meccano, a toy for children. The success of this model spread the notion of using devices to solve scientific problems. Application of the analyzer led Hartree to control theory and fluid dynamics. In both these areas he made significant, original contributions. With his extensive computing background, he was selected as the first civilian to evaluate the possibility of applying the US ENIAC computer to nonmilitary problems. His research touched the lives of many scientists.

    5 out of 5 stars A service to science.......2004-10-17

Charlotte Froese Fischer has done science in general and computer science in particular a great service by portraying the life and work of Douglas Rayner Hartree. He was not only a notable pioneer in atomic theory, numerical analysis and computer software but as well, probably more than any other person, did more to demonstrate the enormous value of the differential analyzer to science and technology - and by no means least to the theory of automatic control. The book reveals Hartree as a wonderful teacher and friend. It is sad to reflect that his intense dedication to the war effort during World War II may have shortened his life.

    3 out of 5 stars Review.......2004-05-01

An interesting review of the life and work of Hartree. Though his contributions to science are significant, Froese Fischer exaggerates the impact of his contributions. Instead of giving a realistic account of an ordinary scientist, Froese Fischer attempts to give an extraordianry account of an extraordinary scientist - which Hartree is not. However, the book does provide much information that would not have otherwise been available to the public.

Just as Fast Food Nation appalled thousands of readers into boycotting McDonalds and its ilk, one can hope that Diabesity might galvanize the public to help prevent a mind-bogglingly huge epidemic from snowballing. Type II diabetes used to be a disease of the elderly; in 1997, the American Diabetes Association decided to do away with the term "adult-onset diabetes," as it increasingly appeared in middle-aged patients, young adults, and teens. It's now appearing in obese children, and affects nearly 10 percent of the American population;[p. 13] what's most unbelievable is that its prevalence nearly doubled between 1990 and 2002, and shows no signs of abating, as every overweight American--that's 64 percent of the population--is at elevated risk.

Diabesity will likely petrify anyone recently diagnosed with diabetes into scrupulously monitoring their blood-sugar level, with frightening stories of blindness, heart attacks, kidney failure, gangrene, impotence in males, and infertility in females, and other side effects from diabetics' elevated blood sugar. Dr. Kaufman gets a little full of herself when she describes audiences—from school boards to World Health Organization assemblies—going wild after her speeches on diabetes. But as a pediatric endocrinologist since the 1970s, she's seen first-hand the rise of the diabetes epidemic, with comatose children appearing in her Los Angeles emergency room with blood-sugar levels 10 times what's considered healthy, so high that they can't be read with present-day equipment.

Curiously absent in Diabesity is any mention of the potential link between infant formula and the later development of diabetes. But Kaufman wins points for chronicling the fight to have L.A. ban soda sales in the schools. ("Sodas are the leading source of added sugar in children's diets.") Her descriptions of the cultural and economic differences among the diabetes epidemics in China, India, and Ecuador are also intriguing. The book should be considered essential for parents, teachers, and day-care providers; it's grim reading, but that's a small sacrifice compared to a life being cut short 20 years by a largely preventable disease. --Erica Jorgensen

    Book Description

Experts now predict that more than one-third of American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Written by one of the world’s leading authorities on the link between obesity and diabetes, this passionate, frightening–but ultimately hopeful–book points the way to a solution.

To enter Dr. Francine Kaufman’s clinic is to see the future of America: a 220-pound twelve-year-old boy…a 267-pound thirteen-year-old girl…their concerned but equally overweight parents…the human faces and human suffering behind the epidemic of type 2 diabetes that threatens to overwhelm our health care system. Once a disease of the elderly, type 2 diabetes now strikes adults in their prime–and, increasingly, children. It has nearly doubled in the last decade. The cause? Our soaring rates of obesity.

Diabesity takes us to the front lines of the fight against this preventable but deadly disease. Through vivid patient stories, it explains how excess weight destroys the body’s ability to process sugar properly–with life-threatening consequences. It shows what happens when the genes that evolved to protect us from famine collide with a sedentary lifestyle that has put bacon cheeseburgers on every corner. And it demonstrates why our usual blame-the-victim response is futile in face of the complex, worldwide forces behind this epidemic.

Detailing the tools for change at every level–from families to school systems to government–and reporting on innovative programs that are already making a difference, Diabesity offers a compelling action plan for winning this battle.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent information.......2007-07-30

My doctor recommended this book. It is excellent. Very well written and very informative. Everyone who has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes or if you have child that runs the risk of developing diabetes needs to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody ought to know.......2006-08-31

Dr. Kaufman has opened my eyes and given lots of hope to people who thought there was no way out of this horrendous cycle which eventually led to amputation and multiple declines until an early death culminated the misery. She certainly has a heart toward her fellowman to bring to light in such a way that the layman can understand the intricate workings of our bodies and how to properly take care of our health. Three cheers for her and her family and all the compassion they have shown!!! This book should be mandatory reading for all humans.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading, low on facts and exploitive.......2005-11-22

This poorly written and researched book is typical of the "hype" that is continually fed to the American public -- EVERYTHING is a crisis! EVERYTHING (from terrorism to the food we eat) is an epidemic! We are bad, and we need to change our behavior -- FAST, or some terrible disaster will befall us.

If you study the history of fads in the US, you find a disturbing trend to demonize food, or to believe that if you eat a certain way (all meat, no meat, vegan, low carbs, no carbs, etc.), then all will be well...you will live forever and your life will be perfect.

There is also an alarming tendency to blame people for their own health problems. It is rare to hear anyone be so heartless and cruel as to blame someone for getting cancer, but just listen to the self-righteous lecturing when author Francine Kaufman blames the overweight for developing diabetes!

I write this as someone who has so much diabetes in her family, that almost every relative of mine has this disease...at least 90%. So I take it very seriously, read everything I can on the illness and try to live as healthy a lifestyle as I can. But -- it's still an illness. My family history shows that it is clearly HEREDITARY, and not entirely due to lifestyle. A number of my family members who became diabetic (Type 2) were NOT obese...some were slightly overweight and others actually slim.

One thing utterly ignored by this poorly researched book is that slim people can and do develope Type II diabetes, especially with age. And that the majority of overweight individuals do NOT have diabetes.

There is obviously a link between Type II diabetes and extra weight, but the most advanced research indicates that diabetes is a far more complex disease than people previously thought....the failure of the bodies complex system of managing carbs and sugars, insulin, etc. begins years before diabetes is diagnosable. I believe, along with many researchers, that it is this long period of insulin surges that causes vulnerable individuals with a genetic pre-disposition to have huge appetites and overeat, thus becoming overweight. The overweight may be a signal that something is indeed wrong metabolically with an individual, and should be managed. However, blaming the patient (i.e., he or she is a "fat pig" and needs to deny themselves every kind of good tasting food, plus do punishing excercise) is wrong and is guaranteed to fail, as is ANY medical diagnosis that is based on blame and moral judgement, instead of science.

The biggest problem fueling the "diabetes" crisis is that 45 million Americans do not have access to health insurance, and therefore, have no medical care of any kind. This means they can't have the checkups, diagnosis, insulin, diabetes monitors, etc. that are essential to treating the disease...hence, their disease goes unchecked until it becomes a life-threatening crisis. This is intolerable in a civilized nation! This is the problem we need to be addressing, not blaming people and trying to shame them for having an illness.

I am heartily sick and tired of this kind of book, which exploits the sick and suffering of human beings, just to sell copies and comes up with "cute" names like "Diabesity" to describe serious medical conditions.

If you are interested in genuine diabetes research on the cutting edge, or having serious concerns about yourself or a family member in this regard, please read some better researched and less commercial books on this subject.

Two months ago I was told by my doc that a recent blood test showed me to be on the edge of diabetes. He suggested that I give up red meat, egg yolks, fried foods and dairy products, and eat more fruits, vegetables and salads, using soy milk for protein, etc. I did so, and last week my test results showed a retreat from the danger zone for blood sugar, and a loss of eight pounds. So I've been told to stay the course with the new eating and add some exercise. I am 60, only five-foot-seven, and weighed 240 pounds when the bad blood was sucked from my arm on June 28th. Although I am in no danger of needing insulin injections soon, as an obese white male of a certain age and sedentary habits, I am at high risk for this terrible disease of diabetes. So I got this book. It is frightening, but well-written, and well-documented, by an M.D. who really knows her stuff. After reading it, I am more afraid for my wife, adult children, and teenage daughter than for myself. If you want a book that might really push you into better eating and more activity by explaining the realities of living with diabetes, get this one.

There's a firm connection between obesity and diabetes resulting in the current epidemic levels of diabetes in America, and Dr. Kaufman, as past president of the American Diabetes Association, is in the perfect position to identify and comment upon this connection in Diabesity: The Obesity-Diabetes Epidemic That Threatens America--And What We Must Do To Stop It. Dr. Kaufman sees vastly overweight children and dangerous new connections between obesity and Type 2 diabetes: chapters outline the condition and use patient stories to explain consequences.

I've never used a book that produced meals that get more compliments from my Dallasite friends or Houston in-laws (and that's no easy feat as they are Tex-Mex experts). Matt's recipes are much simpler than those I've tried from other cookbooks while producing the same or superior results without having to soak chilies, grind them in a blender, etc. I may have to tweak flavorings some (hence 4 stars instead of 5) but the techniques and overall results can't be beat. As to how many recipes a person will use from any given cookbook ... well, in Dallas we eat a lot of this kind of food and I consider the money well spent.

3 out of 5 stars Some good recipes; but book is somewhat pricey........2001-05-14

Even though Tex-Mex food is on every nutrionist's "Index of Forbidden Cuisines," I love the stuff. I ordered this book prepared to like it; and, overall, I'm glad I've got it. For one thing, nearly every item listed in the recipes can be found in my local grocery store located in a town of 8,000 souls in the Northeast.

So, what are my reservations? Though the recipes it contains can expand your waistline, it is rather slender in scope. For myself there are about ten recipes that I would fix at home. If you are not on a restricted budget, buying this book may not be an issue. If you have to be careful with your bucks, then think carefully before placing this item in your shopping cart.

If you thought that it was only a can of Winalot that could take a magical journey through a dog, then you are wrong. Before reading this book I was disconnected from mother Earth. I spat at pigeons in the street, ate sausage rolls (minimum 8% meat) from Gregg's the Bakers and had been sadly lost to the infinite dream web of Maia.

But then Delphi came along and helped me to regain my connectedness to the sacred circle of animals to which we - as humans - a type of ape with only a small amount of fur - belong.

So now, if I do eat a bacon double cheeseburger at McDonald's, I make sure I 'square the circle' as Delphi would say, by going for a massive dump in the woods afterwards.

        Thank you.

A wonderful book! Delphi's Message reaches the hearts and consciousness of all who are open to receive it. Closed hearts can't resonate to the magic and the wonder of the Circle of Life. If we listen we can begin to heal heart, mind and soul, and in so doing assist mankind in regaining its lost postion in The Circle, where no thing is above another, and where peace and harmony govern.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story.......2003-03-13

If you have ever wondered what your animal friends are thinking, or if you would like to go deeper into your relationship with all living beings, then this is the book for you! Delphi the golden retriever uncovers a world where all life is speaking and relationships are based in the heart. From show dog to interspecies communicator to teacher, Delphi has done it all. Read her story and discover the joy of "What Being on Earth Is All About"!

1 out of 5 stars Maybe it's funny to some people.......2003-02-24

From the starting point of a dog which is "so untrained" that the owner is unsure it's ready to function at an animal show much less in civil society, and the premise that this dog nonetheless "talks" through its master and reveals "great secrets", it would seem this book would have nowhere to go but up, but alas, it goes down from there.

Skip this book and spend a while looking at NASA's photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope to get a real sense of the beautifully lonely vastness of the universe and the value of sticking together as living beings.

5 out of 5 stars Dare to open your heart ..........2002-12-01

If you sense that there is magic and wonder in the interchange between nature and animals and yourself, this is the book for you. Or, if you are frightened by sights and sounds beyond yourself, this is the book for you.

Each one has a purpose in life. We are all here to help, says Delphi. The stories in this book are based on animal communication classes taught by the author, Pat Jepsen, and her golden retriever partner Delphi. Transformation is the way in every chapter. I found breathtaking moments of clarity and remorse. From the heart center, we are expanded into the circle of life.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for the needlecraft library........2000-04-06

A highly recommended pick for those involved in quilting and home decoration projects, Carol Armstrong's Wild Birds contains over twenty full-size patterns and directions for 8 projects, providing beautiful bird images which range from titmouse and hummingbird to orioles and swallows. The attention to birding detail provides more depth and ideas than most.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for the applique library.......2000-03-21

Carol Armstrong does it again with her second book. The patterns and examples are stunning. Carol has a knack for designing applique that is visually complex and yet, can be accomplished with basic hand applique skills. These are absolutely the best bird designs out there for applique. These designs are not intended for the "heat-n-bond" quilter, but for the beauty of hand applique. This book inspires and is sure to be a classic for the bookshelf.

Realistic animals are a daunting challenge for most quilters. Margaret Rolfe's technique solves this problem. Her clear instructions and detailed patterns allow you to make fabulous animals.

Each animal pattern includes illustrations and instructions for a wall-hanging including the animal. There are also pictures of other finished quilts using the animals.

My first attempt at using this book was successful, and has inspired me to use more animal motifs in my quilts.

This is a wonderfully written and descriptive memoir. Anna's vivid and beautiful memories of her life before the war are particularly involving. I, personally, was captivated by them. Her concetration camp memoirs are heartbreaking and informative. A very worthwhile read.

Never Far Away: The Auschwitz Chronicles Of Anna Heilman gathers and presents the memories of Anna Heilman, who fought for survival in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Anna's life in Warsaw became one of loss and a fight to live as she recalls her life before, during and after the war. A striking, gripping memoir of life in the camp and a very strongly recommended addition to academic and community library Holocaust Studies and 20th Century European History Studies readling lists and reference collections.
