Brutal Reality with streaks of humor painted in.......2002-03-19
This grim, true biographical WWII story is a picture painted with pain, sacrifice yet - the relentless humor of an honest man. Any proud Vet or any individual wanting to understand the horrors of war would not be able to put this book down. A great gift!
Follow Sydney as he travels across continents battling the enemy so brave, yet scared and confused why this is all happening. You will actually feel like you are `there'. I was captivated by the stories and progress of the savage, never-ending days, yet broke into laughter by the politics of the groups, regardless of nationality. Contrast the
devastation and deadly battles to the internal-fighting yet devotion amongst Sydney's own troops!
Human nature is timeless and so is this quick-read, slice of life.
A real soldier's story.......2002-02-20
Told in the first person, "Thunderbird Dawn" tells the unbelievable story of a soldier's daily experiences during the European campaign in WWII. There is no sugar coating here. The mud, smoke, fear, boredom, danger, and grit of a foot soldier trying to stay alive makes for great reading.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Exploring both the political and intellectual contexts within which Machiavelli's political vision was formed, Mikael Hornqvist stresses the classical and rhetorical character of Machiavelli's thought. He analyzes his preoccupation with glory and liberality in relation to the revival of Roman ideas of triumphalism. The result is a revealing account of the formation of Machiavelli's characteristic preoccupations.
Customer Reviews:
An update of Hulliung's 1983 argument.......2005-10-30
This book takes one of the more central argument's of Hulliung's 'Citizen Machiavelli' and expands on it. Essentially, Hornqvist follows Hulliung in arguing that "the end of Machiavelli's thought is neither the restoration of republican goverment in Florence, nor the liberation of Italy, but greatness, 'the glorious, violent, and aggrandizing deeds that are better performed by republican citizens than monarchical subjects.'"
It is for this reason that Machiavelli is so poorly understood today, viewed as he is merely as a "teacher of evil" which is very far from the truth. As Nietzsche has been slandered, so has Machiavelli; the irony is that in hegemonic US, while the public discourse is latently anti-machiavellian and pro-kantian civility, in its actual practise over the past two centuries it has been an exemplary model of the Machiavellian state in action.
Read Hulliung first, then this book. After you have a strong grasp on current niccolo studies, then you can go read Strauss' "Thoughts on Machiavelli" and play his funny little word- and page-counting games. At least until you faint from laughter at his misreading of Niccolo.

Even better than the last one - and that changed my life!!.......2005-12-21
OK - this is GREAT. Even better than the last, as it is more organised, and well laid out to help almost every type of busy life!
Still written in the warm inclusive style of the last, it contains more info, more recipes, bigger more comprehensive food lists, and also portion guidelines. The 7-day plans layout really helps with planning meals and snacks - from 10 minute or less 'fast & friendly' recipes / grab and run ideas through a brilliant vegetarian plan and onto the 'foodie friendly' plan for those of us who like to cook a bit more
It's still easier than the GI, that has not changed!! and I can safely say I won't be needing another diet again. Brilliant.
Many thanks to author Nigel and co for another major help to my life and conquest of food issues.
Happy happy happy - Claire x
PS - for us US based folk it is easily useable as it includes cup measurements as well as grams in the recipes.

Customer Reviews:
horribly outdated! and a huge disappointment........2006-11-18
I went to disneyworld in october. i'm vegan and was excited that there was a book telling me what i could eat and where, i thought it would make my vacation easier. most of the information in this book is no longer true. i even brought it with me and showed chefs at restaurants where it stated items where vegan, and the chefs said they never wear. the biggest disappointed were the almond bearclaws and the beavertails mentioned int he book. NEITHER of which are vegan. the bearclaws have an egg wash on them and the beavertails have dairy in them. Do your own research and don't buy this book. I wasted time reading it prior to my vacation and wasted even more time on my vacation doing my own research about where i could eat. also, all the places which serve boca burgers as mentioned in the book, cook them on the same grill as the meat, and they are COVERED in meaty grease when served. It makes me wonder if the authors have ever even been to disneyworld. if no stars was an option, thats what i'd give this book.
Much more than veggie burgers and salads!.......2005-05-04
This book was very helpful in planning our trip! Although my husband and I had been to Disney many times, we found out about new places and how to get delicious vegetarian meals at Disney restaurants that were not on the regular menu! It's small size made it easy to add to our backpack for quick reference when in a park! The San Angel Inn (Epcot), the Brown Derby (MGM), and Jiko (Animal Kingdom Lodge) are not to be missed! Much more than veggie burgers and salads!
Review of New Second Edition.......2004-07-22
First, the disclaimer: As the author of the guide, I'm biased when I give it five stars! ;-)
Really I'm writing to inform potential buyers that the reviews below were all written before the second edition of the guide was published and refer to the first edition (which, by the time of writing, was indeed out of date). The new edition shown on this page was entirely revised and updated in late 2003. As such, it provides a wealth of information about current restaurants in Walt Disney World and greater Orlando, as well as a number of reader-submitted reviews and feedback.
It is also the ONLY independent dining guide to Walt Disney World -- health-conscious or not -- and provides excellent background information on the service, theming, and price points of all eating establishments on property, including the theme parks, water parks, resorts, Downtown Disney, and the cruise line.
Happy travels and thanks for "going veg!"
Susan
Read in advance, and be sure to check the web site updates.......2003-01-07
POSITIVES:
- Excellent for educating vegetarians (and everyone) about the difference between Disney and ordinary restaurants...that the chefs work with you to create what you want, there's no need to stick to the menu.
- Good for convincing vegetarians (and gourmands) that it's worth going to nice restaurants at Disney.
NEGATIVES:
- Too much emphasis on "calling in advance" to work out your dream meal, not enough on just picking the restaurants that have the best (or most) vegetarian/vegan items already on the menu.
- Quite outdated by now, it's absolutely necessary to use their web site as an adjunct to bring the info up to date.
BOTTOM LINE:
- Use primarily as a narrative read before you go...only secondarily as a reference for choosing where to eat each day.
Great for all food watchers.........2002-11-23
Being on Weight Watchers, I am much more conscious about what type of foods I can eat. Not being a strict vegetarian, (I don't eat red meat and VERY little meat at all) I found this book very enlightening. I found there are much more options out there than I expected!
While my options might be more than an average vegetarian, this book is a fantastic general guidebook to what is available at the WDW parks and resort restaurants. Knowing what places can give you egg substitute or garden burgers is very handy.. also knowing that many of the chefs around "the world" are very accomodating for special diets, helps a lot!
My suggestion for folks is definitely keep this as one of your top planning guides, read it at least once before you go.. have it handy so you can see what options are there and be flexible. If you aren't able to call ahead to the restaurant, have other places picked that you like to eat.
Another tip is letting the folks know when you make your reservation is a good heads up to the staff to have what you want available. I have a friend who is on a very strict diet after undergoing a gastric bipass, and she let them know ahead of time what she couldn't have and reminded them again when she checked in for dinner, and they were able to put together the most amazing meal!
A final note that chefs change resorts and so the accuracy of this book is not 100% but still well worth the read. This book has every restaurant listed and a very comprehensive review. I am so glad I got this book!

Like listening to a Fascinating Conversation.......2000-09-06
Dr. Jim Humphries discusses various issues concerning cats in a conversational tone. The book's question & answer format is easy to follow and is much like popular Internet FAQ's. Each question is a real question that Dr. Humphries encountered. You get to read the original question, so that in addition to getting the information you also get a glimpse of a unique human-cat relationship behind every question.
The book covers practically every aspect of caring for your cat. Health, nutrition, behavior and grooming as well as everyday care problems, are all discussed thoroughly. What appealed to me in particular was that this vet does not forget basic feline issues, even when they are not directly related to our pampered babies at home. In fact, the first part of the book deals with questions about humane societies, abused cats and strays, declawing, euthanasia and the so important issue of spaying and neutering.
Another nice feature is that Dr. Humphries is not afraid to speak his own mind. All through the book, he frequently names specific brands of food and medicine and either approves or disapproves. His advice is straight and to the point. Rather than having a "disclaimer", he simply makes his claims.
This book makes a good reading, even if you're not looking for a specific answer to a problem. This is not a cat encyclopedia. The Q&A format makes it less orderly and creates a more fluent structure. Then again, when something does come up, it is very convenient to pull out of the shelf and leaf through

Based on Dr. Jim's years as a talk radio veterinarian, he's organized callers questions into logical subjects. His care and straightforward approach is refreshing and the advice is excellent. It can be read from cover to cover, or used as a reference text. Overall an excellent pet care book!! It's sister book is for dogs.
Book Description
Designer Barbara Hammet combines both practical skill and interpretive vision in this new and exciting collection of cross stitch projects. Drawing her inspiration from the surviving examples of the art of ancient Celtic kingdoms Barbara Hammet has produced a series of stunning reworkings of the classical Celtic swirling shapes and sinuous forms that are at once both modern and timeless. The collection is widely diverse, ranging from a desk set worked in striking black and terracotta to an eye-catching pair of peacocks that would enliven any plain wall and a handsome firescreen whose design is based on the Durrow Circle. There are patterns to suit every level of skill, while the motif library will provide plenty of inspiration for further projects.

Delighted.......2007-05-30
Just what I was looking for. I particularly liked the the design snippets at the back and there were plenty of them.
Lots of possibilities.......2007-03-02
I received this book as a birthday gift at the same time I received Carol Phillipson's "Celtic Cross Stitch Designs." It says "over 75 beautiful designs" on the cover; online purchasers should be aware, however, that only approximately 25 of the designs are individual project designs -- a few relatively large and complex (including two different pillow tops, a tablecloth design, a firescreen, and a picture of two Celtic peacocks) and then several more fairly small and quick coordinating projects (such as a 4x4 inch scissors keeper pillow, a key ring design, and a couple of bookmarks). The major themes/designs are as follows:
*a set of small but lovely knotwork-design stitchery items (shown on the cover of the book)
*a purse-purse mirror-keyring-glasses case set done in scrollwork and swirls in muted colors "to reflect the colours and textures of rocky landscape"
*a picture of a pair of peacocks adapted from the Book of Kells and stitched in very vibrant colors
*a notebook cover, paperweight, bowl lid, and card in celtic key patterns (worked in just one color on a black background) plus two bookmarks (two colors each)
*a picture of golden dragons with knotwork around them stitched on a black background, also
*four variations on small, round intertwined serpent designs worked in pastel colors
*a Durrow circle firescreen in red, gold, and green, with a large central disc and then two angular knotwork bands at the top and the bottom
*two throw pillows (one birds, one hounds) worked in pastels similar to those used in the snake designs
*a cat-with-interlaced-birds bell-pull done in muted but not quite pastel colors
*and finally, an extremely elegant-looking tablecloth and napkin set using La Tene-style designs in shades of gray-blue.
The other 50 designs are a "Celtic Motif Library" of borders, small knots, small animals, and so forth which could be used for a variety of purposes.
I think that Phillipson's book is likely to result in a greater number of projects for my own stitchery, primarily because it included a larger number of distinct project designs, but I still definitely like this one very much and I'm happy to own both. There are a number of very beautiful projects, most of the major designs would be easily adaptable to projects other than those shown in the book, and the motif library is likely to prove useful, as well, since I do a fair bit of improvising my own designs. For novice stitchers who primarily want to work projects precisely as they are printed in books, the Phillipson book might make a better first choice, but this one would be excellent for anyone who has a specific interest in any of the major designs included in it (all of which are quite nice) or who enjoys futzing around with design elements, as I do.
Stitching Celtic Art.......2007-01-28
This book provides a number of designs suitable for borders or for incorporating into larger pieces. It also includes some historical information about the various designs that I found interesting.
This book contains designs for someone new to the joys of counted work as well as for those more experienced stitchers looking for inspiration. Many of the knotwork designs lend themselves to being incorporated into small gifts such as bookmarks as well as to experimentation with different threads and fabrics.
I'd strongly suggest that anyone working a design from this book work from a photocopy of the relevant page: it will be easier to carry around.

celtic art in cross stitch.......2007-01-11
it was a wonderful book, i loved the easy to read charts and directions. I'm an avid stitcher, and the book is worth the money.
Unique designs.......2007-01-10
This book was exactly what I was looking for. All patterns are in colour and easy to follow. The unique designs are well interpreted. I use this book for beading and not cross stitch- the patterns work well.

Advanced embroidery.......2006-03-30
This book is for those that understand stitchery with ease. The designs are really good to use with anything, even making bookmarks. This book is for the advanced cross stitcher, or embroiderer.
Mixed Reviews.......2002-10-02
I like the designs, but the total black and white with tiny blocks makes the patterns hard to read. The designs are good, but lacking in color, so if you feel like playing around with them a bit, this is a great book - especially considering the price. Otherwise, I'd probably recommend staying away from it and going with a more expensive, though much more readable and more colorful alternative.
Great book; great price.......2001-09-15
WOW! For the price this book is absolutely wonderful. All the patterns are in black & white, but it's still just as useful as most of the $...-$... celtic cross-stitch books.
A worth while purchase.......2001-09-03
This book has many different designs available. The designs can be a bit small, and a bit difficult to read. I highly recommend taking these charts and enlarging them before starting work on them. There are a great variety in designs, some will take a while to complete, while others can be completed in much less time.
Very good, but not great...........2000-07-02
If you're a true fan of Celtic art, you'll probably enjoy these patterns, but be warned; these will not appeal to everyone. Some of the patterns are outstanding in their design; others are just dull. While the interesting patterns out-number the boring ones, the color choices are bland (unless you really LOVE earth tones) and some of the charts are made up of too few stitches to represent the original designs. Still, if these things don't bother you, I strongly recommend this title.

Another wonderful book of Celtic cross stitch designs.......2007-03-01
I own far too many of these books. Each one I buy gives me new projects to explore, new possibilities for colour combinations and wonderful gift ideas.
This book is no exception. The basics are all here: an innovative stitcher might want to experiment a little with the use of metallics or beads while a new stitcher can learn to master his or her technique.
The projects are keyed to both Anchor and DMC - which is great for those of us who use either.
Recommended for those who, like me, think that there is always room for one more stitching book on the shelf.

Good but not excellent.......2005-12-03
The designs included are a little simplistic, with little or no shading and relatively little detail. NEVERTHELESS they are well charted, well organized, and treated as "motifs" rather than projects (though some project ideas are included) so that you can use them for a variety of purposes. The nice thing, however, about not using 50 colors for one design is that you can easily adapt the color scheme to suit your needs.
I'm not entirely familiar with traditional Celtic art, mostly just modern interpretations. This book is pretty much what I expected to see, so I don't know if it's historically accurate or any of that. All I know is that I'm satisfied with the design and contents, and I suppose that's all I can say!
Positively a must have!.......2005-03-04
This book is a must have for anyone interested in Celtic Art. I can't wait to get started on the designs. This book has clear detailed instructions that can be altered with little to no problem it seems. The designs range from simple quick projects to more advanced longer projects which would make it an excellent purchase for those just getting into cross stitching.
GREAT Celtic cross stitch book!!!.......2003-08-24
This book is worth the cover price for the lettering patterns alone!
I anxiously awaited delivery of this book. So many books are full of designs you'll never use. This book is a wonderful exception. The beginning of the book has a short section on how to instructions that could help the novice cross-stitcher. Then the remainder of the book is devoted to classic Celtic designs and a wonderful array of projects that range from the simple Celtic cross book mark (a nice quick project) to a Celtic designed rug.
Best features of all -- 6 different alphabet designs and a pattern library in the back to fuel your stitching creativity even further. This is a great addition to any stitcher's library and especially those who love Celtic design!
Excellent Collection.......2002-03-11
Much better than the other Celtic cross-stitch I've looked through. Good library of designs - all the clasic knots and animals - and perhaps most important for beginners (and the lazier among us): No half-stitches!
Book Description
“This compilation is notable for its wealth of small, colorful projects inspired by elements of Celtic design such as knotwork, spirals, fanciful animals, and religious motifs. Many projects are appropriate for the beginning cross-stitcher, and all are graded for difficulty....Each project includes full-color illustrations, both color and black-and-white charts, and finishing instructions....Recommended.—Library Journal.

Contains 40 projects using many of same stitches.......2004-06-09
This stitchery book is misnamed perhaps? Perhaps not. The title says that it has over 40 small, exciting and innovative projects. What it doesn't say is that many use variations of exactly the same design.
This book centers on the themes of water, fire, air, and earth. One water theme that repeated far too often for my liking with salmon - the identical salmon design was used on a scented pillow, a salmon cushion, a salmon tissue sachet, salmon card, and salmon gift tag.
Now that all having been said, there are a few stunning designs that made buying this book worth every penny. A particularly beautiful design in the water category is that of a "water jewel purse" - it's a beautiful little jewel tone purse designed in alternating stripes of Celtic knots in alternating colors. The design could easily be used, with a little imagination, to create a larger purse. There are also a few other fish designs, a sea serpent design, a knotwork bookmark, knot key rings, a dragon eyeglass case, a Celtic angel pincushion, an eagle bookmark, a triskele box (a sort of spiral design), a saint and birds, a durrow saint sachet, a durrow know clothes hanger, a bird headed triskele scissor keep, a grape vineyard design used on several projects, a design for a chessboard and fabric case for chessmen, a Celtic cross picture design, and most beautiful of all the designs - a Celtic swan needle case.
In the final analysis, this book was well worth buying for two reasons - 1. there were enough beautiful designs inside to make it worth it, and 2. with a little imagination and the instructions for a few types of projects, a crafter could create their own designs.
Designs are.... Yucky.......2002-10-02
I was looking for some good samples of Celtic Cross Stitch designs. And all I can say is... I didn't find them here. I didn't care for the designs, and the book is really skimpy - they re-use a lot of the same designs with various simple adjustments to make up for the lack of variety. I would NOT recommend this book at all for anyone who wants to do a Celtic project.
Somewhat Disappointing.......2002-07-19
I was somewhat disappointed by the projects contained in this book. The title says "Over 40 small, exciting, and innovating projects" and strictly speaking that's true. However there are not that many designs. For instance, the first 4 projects use the same salmon design in different arrangements - with a celtic border, on a cushion, as a sachet and as a card. This is ingenious and useful but if you don't care for this particular design, there go 4 projects out of the book that you don't want to do. I would have liked to have seen more different designs instead of these multi-uses of the same design (the grapes design later on is also shown as a card, a sachet, a placemat, and a napkin, another 4 projects). That said, I still found patterns that I liked a lot and feel that on the whole the book was worth purchasing.

Book Description
This new study on Thomas Gainsborough concentrates on the early life and works of the great eighteenth-century artist. Gainsborough's talent was evident at a young age, and before he established himself as one of London's leading portrait artists he was able to indulge himself in his true passion, landscapes, as well as providing portraits for a provincial clientele.
Graced with the light and gentle shadows of the English countryside, these early works provided the foundation for much of Gainsborough's later work. But many of them, including the renowned Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, and His Daughters Chasing a Butterfly, can be called masterpieces in their own right. It was in Suffolk that the artist developed a naturalistic approach to portraiture by abandoning "conversation pieces" and painting instead a number of straightforward head-and-shoulder portraits. This lively and accessible volume features eighty color and black-and-white reproductions of Gainsborough's paintings, etchings, and drawings. They not only shed light on the development of one of England's most revered painters, but also offer an intimate look at the work of a young painter in the thrall of his subjects, and just beginning to realize his full talents.

Belsey Offers a Compelling Portrait of Early Gainsborough.......2003-09-04
This is an engaging book focusing on the earlier landscape paintings and portraits completed in Ipswich and Bath. The observations on the details of the paintings are acute and perceptive. The author illuminates with a thorough knowledge of the social mores and conventions of 18th Century England. For painters and artists, the insights on formal composition and color are instructive.
The narrative text is laced with a wit, humor, and irony that perhaps one can only find in an English art historian writing about a consummate English artist. The book is also mercifully focused and short, alleviating some of the bludgeon like tediousness of many art history tomes.
Thomas Gainsborough: A Country Life by Hugh Belsey.......2002-12-19
Mr Belsey has truimphed with this book - it is packed with detail that is conveyed in an accessible style of writing that enables the reader to absorb information whilst, at the same time, enjoying the whole experience.
Book Description
The man the New York Times has called "the preeminent scholar of the Holocaust" tells the stories of those who caused, experienced, and witnessed the great human catastrophe.

The Insignificant Extent of Polish-German Collaboration.......2006-09-27
Raul Hilberg has written a generally balanced and thoughtful account. The only obvious shortcoming of this book is his over-reliance on tendentious sources of information (such as Claude Lanzmann's SHOAH, and Shmuel Krakowski).
Hilberg discusses several collaborationist governments under Nazi Germany. He also points out that, by July 1, 1942, eighteen Ukrainian Schutzmannschaft battalions alone were in existence (p. 95). The Baltic nations provided a comparable number of collaborationist police battalions and many more officers (p. 97).
The recent over-attention to the Jedwabne massacre has generated a greatly exaggerated notion of Polish-German collaboration, and the Polish Blue Police (the Policja Granatowa) has often been falsely conflated with the Ukrainian and Baltic collaborationist forces. Hilberg corrects this: "Of all the native police forces in occupied Eastern Europe, those of Poland were least involved in anti-Jewish actions...The Germans could not view them as collaborators, for in German eyes they were not even worthy of that role. They in turn could not join the Germans in major operations against Jews or Polish resisters, lest they be considered traitors by virtually every Polish onlooker. Their task in the destruction of Jews was therefore limited." (pp. 92-93). Hilberg's notion of "worthiness" is puzzling because, in spite of Hitler's objections (p. 93), the Ukrainian Schutzmannschaft battalions were nevertheless formed. The Ukrainians were regarded as Slavic untermenschen (subhumans) no less so than the Poles! The acceptance of Jewish collaboration (e. g., the infamous ghetto police), in spite of any trace of "worthiness" attributed to Jews by the Germans, needs no comment.
The draconian German occupation had caused near-starvation conditions in the countryside, putting local Poles and fugitive Jews in conflict. Hilberg realizes that Polish killings of Jews were at least sometimes motivated by this: "Food, and everything else they needed, had to be acquired or taken somewhere. One German account noted that Polish peasants, about to be attacked by Jewish `bandits", had beaten thirteen of them to death." (p. 208).
Hilberg is unafraid of provocative issues. He is candid about the Zydokomuna (Jewish Communism): "Jews, alongside a number of other non-Russians, had taken a leading part in the Communist revolution." (p. 250). He tackles the issue of overall Jewish passivity in the face of Nazi slaughter as follows: "In the Jewish councils, no pamphlets were composed and no arguments were made to show that any German action was hurtful and morally wrong. No ill will was expressed to the Germans. No threats were made to the life of any German. No rumors were started that the Allied powers would retaliate for the destruction of the Jews." (p. 178).
Hilberg has a good grasp of the actual reasons for the under-representation of Jews in the mainstream Polish Underground Army (the AK): "Many members of the Armia Krajowa were civilians during the workday and underground soldiers only on weekends and at night. The Jews, on the other hand, did not and could not have regular jobs or occupations as fugitives. For the Armia Krajowa it was important to wait for a decisive moment of German weakness to seize portions of Poland, or at least Warsaw, and to secure such a foothold before Soviet forces could arrive. In the meantime, it hoarded its weapons with the thought that it had fewer arms than men. All too often the Jews presented themselves instead as additional men without rifles, pistols, or military training. If, in addition, they were poor speakers of Polish or recognizably Jewish, their handicaps made them a self-evident liability" (p. 207).
Interestingly, and despite the imminent destruction of their Jewish communities, some Jewish leaders agreed with the overall Polish underground combat strategy: "The Socialist Bund leader Maurycy Orzech strongly believed that Jews should not fight a battle separate from the Poles; the time had not yet come." (p. 184).
The acquisition of post-Jewish properties by Poles has recently gotten a great deal of one-sided media attention through the publication of FEAR by Jan Thomas Gross, and this has been misrepresented as an outcome of Polish greed. In actuality, there was a desperate housing shortage in Poland during (and after) the war. Hilberg touches on this: "Despite gains of space as a result of ghetto formation, the Poles were still crowded. Polish Warsaw (population 1 million) was lacking 70,000 apartments...In the city of Radom, the norm was a room density of six for Jews, and three for Poles." (p. 312).
Hilberg has a realistic understanding of the impotence of the Christian church in saving its own, let alone of saving the Jews, from German actions: "The churches, once a powerful presence on the European continent, had reached a nadir of their influence during the Second World War...Even in the democratic west, churches were subordinate structures, regulating the lives of citizens mainly on Sundays, and then only in a ceremonial manner...If the protection of baptized people was problematical, any attempt to help professing Jews was to be even less promising." (p. 260, 262).
Citing German documents, Hilberg notes that Poles believed that they would be "next" (pp. 204-205) when they saw the Jews being taken to their deaths. He also writes: "In Poland, the local German administrators would order the Polish population to stay indoors and keep the windows closed with blinds drawn during roundups of Jews..." (p. 215). In various contexts, Hilberg (p. 136, 147, 160) repeatedly refers to the fact that Jews about to be deported to their deaths were told that they were being "resettled". However, Hilberg fails to make this connection with the Germans' stated eventual aim of "resettling" the Poles and other Slavs. Nevertheless, Hilberg does move beyond the genocide of Jews to the planned long-term genocide of Slavs: "There was some hope that Slavic populations in German-occupied Europe could be brought to extinction by mass sterilizations." (p. 67).

Don't fault a book for sticking to its scope.......2006-03-09
I agree that most studies of atrocities in WW2 may focus excessively on the Jewish Holocaust to the detriment of other groups. However, the title of this book specifically designates it as a study of the "JEWISH" catastrophe. Hilberg aptly addresses the topic. Don't fault a book for being precise and sticking to its designated scope.
What about the other victims?.......2006-01-01
I would not recommend this book. This book, as does history, ignores the other 16-20 million non Jewish victimes of the holocaust. How is it that these other victims are continuously looked over and forgotten? They had families and lives as well! Are they less important then the Jewish visctims? The Holocaust is not exclusive to the Jewish people-what about the millions of Ukraines, cripples, prisoners of war, homosexuals...the list goes on. I am saddened by the fact that these victimes are viewed as lesser or nonexistant.
