Book Description

Beginning with his humble origins as an Illinois farm boy and son of a "dirt farmer," Bill Bainbridge's Top Sergeant is the only memoir of an enlisted man's rise to the most senior NCO position in the U.S. Army.
In a military career spanning more than three decades, Bill Bainbridge saw service in three wars, fought in two of them, and was captured in one. In France in World War II, Bainbridge served with A Company, 423rd Infantry of the 106th Infantry Division. Forced to surrender during the Battle of the Bulge, he spent five months in a German POW camp, weighing only eighty-six pounds when he was liberated. Discharged in December of '45, he fully expected to spend the rest of his life as a farmer.
But being called up for the Korean War ruined his farming prospects and, in due time, "That peculiar chemistry of training, experience, and promotion began to have its effect, and I realized that I didn't want to be anywhere else but the Army." In thirty-one years of service, Bainbridge served in leading NCO positions the world over, including Battalion Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, II Field Force Sergeant Major in Vietnam, Sergeant Major U.S. Army Pacific, and Basic Training Center Sergeant Major at Fort Benning, where he was instrumental in setting up the first NCO Candidate Course. Bainbridge was also the first sergeant major of the Sergeants Major Academy.
He received ten Good Conduct Medals, two awards of the Combat Infantry Badge, three Army Commendation Medals, and the Distinguished Service Medal, among others. But the greatest moment in his career came when he was selected to be Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army, its highest NCO position, an office he was the first to hold for four years.
But Bainbridge's most important job of his illustrious career was the welfare of his soldiers. Whether in base camps in Vietnam, aviation units in Germany, or training centers in Fort Benning, Bainbridge never forgot what he was there for. "Soldiers will do anything you ask provided you prepare them with good training and treat them with dignity."
Top Sergeant is all about doing what a good sergeant does best--attending to the needs of his men--and what it takes to be a great noncommissioned officer in an Army that officers are proud to command--but that NCOs really run.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Gives Valuable Insights And Anecdotes.......1998-07-12

My brother gave me this book a few months ago and I finally made time to read it - and I'm glad I did.
This book is full of great information about the life of a great soldier. It contains information that leaders in all walks of life - military and civilian - will benefit from. It also gives some great insight on Army life. I spent eight years in the Navy and was fortunate to work for several NCOs and Officers that shared Mr.Bainbridge's view on leadership - they really knew how to treat their men.
I might have enjoyed it even more had it contained more personal information - not very many details are given into home or family life unless it relates to the subjects military life.
Overall, a very down-to-earth account of life that many would do well to emulate in both character and content.

The year is 1965, and John R. Lee has been promoted to the rank of first sergeant and assigned to a basic training unit in Fort Gordon, Georgia. In a story that contains both humorous and tragic elements, Lee never tries to be the hero; he just reports what he saw.

The story moves to Hawaii, where the Army was in the process of activating the 11th Infantry Brigade for duty in Vietnam. Lee’s unit is shipped to Vietnam to become part of the Americal Division.

After his tour of duty, Sergeant Lee retires, but he is later recalled to active duty and returns to Vietnam to become part of the 1st Cavalry Division as he finds how the situation and attitudes have changed.

As the story draws to a close, Lee is reassigned to Fort Bennning, Georgia, where soon after he was promoted to sergeant major.

            Product Description

xThis scientific biography of the mathematician Joseph Liouville is divided into two parts. The first part is a chronological account of Liouville's career including a description of the institutions he worked in, his relations with his teachers, colleagues and students, and the historical context of his works. It portrays the French scientific community in a period when Germany and England had surpassed France as the leading nations in mathematics and physics. The second part of the book gives a detailed analysis of Liouville's major contributions to mathematics and mechanics. The gradual development of Liouville's ideas, as reflected in his publications and notebooks, are related to the works of his predecessors and his contemporaries as well as to later developments in the field. On the basis of Liouville's unpublished notes the book reconstructs Liouville's hitherto unknown theories of stability of rotating masses of fluid, potential theory, Galois theory and electrodynamics. It also incorporates valuable added information from Liouville's notes regarding his works on differentiation of arbitrary order, integration in finite terms, Sturm-Liouville theory, transcendental numbers, doubly periodic functions, geometry and mechanics.

Great book for health teachers! Tons of info that can be used in the classroom. A little too much information for your elementary school teacher (like in my case), but unfortunately this is the book my professor chose.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2005-08-04

It's a textbook, which means that the price is inflated atrociously high. This text is meant for introductory courses and for that purpose it is tolerable. Nevertheless, it is long-winded, dull and poorly written. Also, because it is meant to be used for an introductory overview course, most of the material will most likely be used during lectures. The truth is, this book was the "required reading" for a course I took. Our Professor was most likely required to assign a textbook and she picked this one, and never assigned us to read any of it. I read parts before exams in order to try to fill in any gaps from our lectures, but this book is a waste of time and money if not necessary for carrying out assignments.

            1 out of 5 stars Too brief..........2005-09-26

I didn't have that high of expectations for a health book after the ones I had in middle and high school. However, this one proved to actually be worse than the ones from my public education.

The book doesn't go into much detail except in the chapters that show different physical exercises. Now I understand as well as any American student that being fit is a key component of health class, but there are other things that need to be taught, especially to college freshmen (the group who is most likely to use this book). They need to talk about things like abstaining from alcohol, drugs, and sex since the education they get in high school isn't enough. They also need to talk about good decision making, which is essential for college.

The physical exercises are the normal ones you'd find in any gym class and aren't anything revolutionary. Some of the labs seem a bit bogus in my opinion (in particular the sit and reach test since it isn't fair for people with short arms). The included CD, called HealthQuest, isn't bad, but is basically an electronic way to calculate everything in the book. There is some emphasis on dieting, which I also feel isn't the best topic for a health book since, like exercise, it varies from person to person. A football player obviously needs more in his system than a 4'11" girl who doesn't play sports.

The pages are designed to rip out of the book but they don't rip out well. The edge usually looks like a dog just took a bite out of it.

The CD and the journal give this text the one star I awarded it. Because your professor will likely make you rip out the pages these books have no value used.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-22

I'm a Sports Science major with a concentration in Physical Therapy and this book was used for a undergrad Lifetime physical fitness class. Man, a lot of books lack key information needed in this field but this book is right on. The chapters are well put together in a great order. No skipping around chapters. It's a great beginners good. two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you were afraid to ask about health.......2004-05-20

This is a solid book for teaching you the basics of leading a healthy life. For people not well educated on basic wellness ideas, this can be a godsend: it will guide you through many topics that are considered common knowledge but, unfortunately, probably aren't as well-known and properly understood as they should be.

                Topics covered here include:
                - basic methods to studying and eliminating unhealthy habits
                - stress sources and management
                - strength exercises, including photos and descriptions of many common ones: good for an exercise novice who'd like to avoid the embarrassment of looking totally confused at the gym (though there's no substitute to a trainer who knows what he's doing)
                - healthy eating habits, and detailed analysis of carbs, fats, and other things food is made up of
                - coverage of diseases, including STDs and other chronic illnesses

This book is great for independent study, which was the method I used it. Augmenting it with help from a teacher could highlight other areas the book doesn't go quite as in-depth into; in my class's studies, many web sites had to be visited, which added some good knowledge outside the book's scope. Also, each chapter seems to be a little long; splitting some chapters up into shorter sections would have made me feel like I was moving through the book quicker.

However, this is a quality-written book from McGraw Hill. It could be good for anyone, young or old, who doesn't know much but wants to learn how to live a healthy life. If you're looking to get into shape for the summer, but have never paid attention to your health habits before, this book can actually be quite a good starting point: it can help point out how certain foods will affect your body, and give you a quick overview of many common, effective, good exercises. Very recommended for either class or independent study.

Julia Child may have been responsible for helping American cooks ease into French cooking techniques, but it was Pierre Franey who brought it all home with his New York Times recipe column, "The 60-Minute Gourmet." Franey took the fear and drudgery out of stylish, flavorful cooking and injected healthy doses of fun. Many were his fans, and many a weekly dinner menu was planned with a hole in the middle to allow for Franey's latest culinary exploration. The best part was the timing. With the basic ingredients on hand and with a little skill under the belt, any home cook could, in fact, get out of the kitchen in 60 minutes and put on the table what many would consider a gourmet dish.

Thanks be to Bryan Miller and to Pierre Franey's family for gathering up 300 of the great teacher's recipes from his column and assembling them for Cooking with the 60-Minute Gourmet. So true to context are these recipes that you can hear Franey tell you what the ingredients are as you read the list, and hear him explain how a dish goes together as you read through the directions--which is to say, there's magic in these pages.

In chapters that include appetizers, salads, soups, poultry, beef, pork, veal, lamb, seafood, pasta, vegetables, and desserts, you will find the likes of Garlic Potatoes, Ziti with Mussels and Broccoli, Salmon with Sorrel Sauce, Broiled Skirt Steak Cajun Style, Indonesian-Style Chicken Breasts, Pumpkin Sage Soup, Tomato and Lentil Salad, and a Cold Lobster Appetizer with Spicy Mustard Sauce. Check out Franey's spicy mango barbecue sauce (he serves it with roasted baby chickens). There are celebrity chefs today who call such a sauce new and bold, which only shows how far out ahead Pierre Franey always was. --Schuyler Ingle

                  Book Description

Three hundred newly discovered recipes drawn from Pierre Franey's famed "60-Minute Gourmet" columns in The New York Times

The master chef's legions of fans will be delighted to learn of such surprising culinary good fortune. Prepared with Pierre Franey's characteristic flair and ebullience, this new collection offers three hundred recipes that appeared in The New York Times but were never before published in a cookbook. These recipes are as delicious as those in his two earlier 60-Minute Gourmet collections and combine everything that was great about Pierre Franey's cooking: fresh, flavorful, low-fat ingredients, ease of preparation, and the commandment "Don't spend all evening in the kitchen!"

Following a successful career as a restaurant chef, Pierre Franey became a food writer for The New York Times in 1975, when he accepted the challenge to write a regular column featuring recipes that would take less than one hour to prepare. Though he was initially concerned that the time limit might detract from the quality of the dishes, he quickly recalled the delicious foods prepared in his childhood home in France, which often took very little time to cook. Over the two decades that his column appeared, he developed thousands of dishes that can--indeed, must--be made in only minutes to bring them to a state of absolute perfection.

Cooking with the 60-Minute Gourmet is a dazzling collection of great recipes. The book opens with appetizers, salads, and soups, then moves into meats, poultry, seafood, pasta, and, finally, desserts. Among the many delectable recipes are Green Bean and Red Pepper Salad, Lobster and Wild Rice Salad, Double Veal Chops with Braised Spring Vegetables, Sirloin Steak with Crushed Peppercorns, Roasted Baby Chickens with Spicy Mango Barbecue Sauce, Shrimp with Snow Peas and Tomatoes, Fettuccine with Goat Cheese and Asparagus, Broiled Fennel and Zucchini with Parmesan Cheese, Summer Fruit Salad, and Poached Pears in Red Wine and Cassis.

A special tribute to Pierre Franey is offered in a fond Foreword by his lifelong friend the master chef Jacques Pépin. The recipes have been collected and updated by Bryan Miller, a longtime collaborator of Franey's, with help from Claudia Franey Jensen, one of père Franey's daughters, who has also contributed an Introduction. As a step-by-step guide and an inspiration for better eating, this great cookbook will soon be considered a must in every home cook's library.

4 out of 5 stars Delicious, but longer than 60-Minutes!.......2000-05-02

As always, Franey's recipes are delicious. Everything we've cooked, so far, has been quite an enjoyable meal.

However, being a competent but by no means an expert cook, I find that I can't complete the recipes in 60 minutes!

For someone who followed Franey's New York Times column, you'll really enjoy this book!

4 out of 5 stars A Lot of Bridge Building Theory and Prototype Photos.......2007-07-08

This book appears to be a compendium of earlier articles from Model Railroader. It starts with "Understanding Bridge Construction" and discusses various types of bridges including trestle design, plate girder bridges, and a look at some prototype bridges with measurements. There are some chapters on actual model bridge construction ("kit-bashing" or "scratch building") but overall, the book leans heavily toward the concepts of bridges so the modeler can make and use the structures as the prototype railroads would. (You don't typically use a huge span to cross a drainage ditch for example.) I found the chapter on wooden trestle and their "bends" (p. 30) useful and the chapter on "Building Black Bear Bridge" (p. 106) fascinating.

I would say this book would be good for the middle level to the experienced modeler. I personally think the novice would be better served buying some of the excellent model bridges available. Even they might appreciate the basics covered in the early chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for all!.......2007-06-13

I know I have given high praise to "The Model Railroader's Guide to Bridges, Trestles & Tunnels", but in all honesty this is THE perfect resource for designing and building your OWN bridges. It gives great detail in almost every aspect of design and construction of bridges, it even gives explanations for what type of bridge would suit diffrent terrains and land masses. Buy this along with "The Model Railroader's Guide to Bridges, Trestles & Tunnels" and you will have THE COMPLETE resource for any and all types of bridge building.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2006-12-27

Speaking as one who was formerly a civil engineer, this compendium is a wonderful collection of articles on building bridges for model railroads. It is not a book by a single author. Instead, it is a collection of reprints of articles from Model Railroader magazine. As such, some are better than others but all are good.

Particularly worthy of note is the first series of articles which is a survey of different types of bridges and their design. It is technically correct and conveys enough information to the modeler to do a creditable job but it is yet simple enough to understand for those without an engineering background.

Most of the later articles deal with the construction of particular bridges instead of general principles but they too are well written and adaptable to other situations. Since this work is intended for modelers and not engineers, much of the emphasis is on the aesthetics. This is as it should be as it is the information vital to the modeler.

All in all, this is a great collection.

3 out of 5 stars Building Railraod Bridges? Then this book is for you!.......2006-11-09

This book is a collection of articles that have previously appeared in past issues of Model Railroader Magazine. While the articles are informative and insightful, the format that Kalmbach uses to copy the various original bridge and trestle articles and paste them into a book is not very slick. It would have been nice if they would have updated some of the information and added more color photographs. Books in this format appear to be another way for Kalmbach to re-hash old articles of a similar topic, put them under one cover and generate more sales from already published material. This book has become reference material for my library. I however would recommend the Kalmbach book "The Model Railroader's Guide To BRIDGES, TRESTLES & TUNNELS" by Jeff Wilson, this book is fresh, better organized, and a useful tool for modeling railroad bridges.

Great for bridges and trestles...you need some practical woodworking experience to master the construction procedures...BUT it wouldn't take long to if you concentrate.

I like this book because it's short, succinct and tells what you want to know -- what actually grows! Written by an arborist who has been taking care of Houston-area trees for many years, this book doesn't give you a huge list of what you CAN grow. It tells you which trees DO grow well and easily in this climate and have the least problems, along with how to take care of them. Also tells which commonly-planted trees to avoid. Very valuable, IMO, though I have not had long to put it into practice.

                        Book Description

Most studies of social development in children have relied on the assumption that adults' instructions to children pass on knowledge of the rules of behavior which govern and preserve society. In this volume, James Youniss argues that the child's relations with his or her friends and peers make a distinctive and critically important contribution to social development. While the child's relations with parents and other adults provide a sense of order and authority, peer relations are a source of sensitivity, self-understanding, and interpersonal cooperation.

Following a discussion of the views of Harry Stack Sullivan and Jean Piaget, whose theories are synthesized in Youniss's perspective, Youniss presents a wealth of empirical data from studies in which children describe their own views of their two social worlds.

This book blew me away. The personal and contemplative writing sets a beautiful tone for the photos.
While working as a fifth grade teacher, Abram discovers that his girlfriend is cheating on him. All day long in class, he's teaching grammer, but thinking of his crumbling love life. Soon, he realizes that everyone else is probably just as distracted about something while they are going about their lives all around him as he is about his girlfriend's infidelity.
He wishes that everyone's t-shirt said what they were thinking on it so we could all know what's really going on with each other.
So, he sets out across New Orleans asking everyone he meets to write their deepest, most secret thoughts on a t-shirt, and then he takes a picture of them wearing the shirt. The pictures give us a glimpse of the touching, scary, hilarious, sometimes idecipherable, and often deeply sad things on peoples' minds as they walk the streets, work their restaurant jobs, sit in class in high school, drink in bars, or play in front of their houses.

Every city should be blessed with a portrait this complex and caring. If only every writer could get 100 "people on the street" to open their heads and hearts the way Himelstein has done here.

                        Superb.

For Moorcraft, a bad day is when death helicopters strafe the village while he cowers in a valley latrine. Moorcraft's detailed accounts of war from Africa to the Balkans are engaging and sometimes even humorous. He's not blind to the pleasures of good people and beautiful terrain, but his travel tales are shaped by more serious stuff, like bloodshed, freedom and injustice. Allen Pizzey says it's "a jaundiced-eyed, literate and often sensitive frolic across the newsfronts of two decades." It's also a magnificent book.

4 out of 5 stars Well- written biographies but .........2005-02-17

The short biographies here are well- written. But I have a number of quarrels with the selection of the book, and with its title. The phrase 'changed the world' seems to me a bit large when describing the lives of popular entertainers ( Barbra Steisand) fashion designers (Trigano) and minor literary figures (Gertrude Stein). It also seems to me unwise and misleading to select people for such lists whose contribution is to enterprises which are in some way antithetical to Judaism. I find on the list (Miriam of Nazareth) and while it is true that this central figure in Christianity is Jewish , her whole meaning as a person has to do with what is not Jewish. This point seems to me an especially point one at a time when there is a not small group of people in the world who have abandoned the Jewish religion , adopted Christianity, and still ( misleadingly) represent themselves as Jewish.
This work does have a useful list upon which are included many figures who might have made it the list of fifty.
