Book Description
Robert S. Mulliken, Nobel Laureate in chemistry, always had the intention to write a book about his field of research: molecular orbital theory. This is his scientific autobiography, edited posthumously by his former student Bernard J. Ransil and complemented with a memoir by Friedrich Hund, his scientific protagonist. Mulliken describes his career and gives an account of the contributions of his friends and colleagues at home and in Europe where he frequently travelled. And last but not least, he gives an accurate history of how the molecular orbital theory originated and how it evolved in an atmosphere of international exchange. The book is written in a particularly lively style, full of reminiscences and scientific facts, interwoven to produce an account of the Life of a Scientist.

Book Description
From the best-selling author of Male Menopause comes another life-transforming book for men-and the women who love them-on overcoming the mood and behavior changes caused by fluctuating male hormonesIt turns out that it's not only women who suffer from hormone related irritability. Depression, anger, fatigue, moodiness, anxiety, lethargy, low libido, and confusion are just some of the symptoms of a recently identified condition that affects men. IMS (Irritable Male Syndrome) is in some ways similar to male menopause, but it can affect men of all ages. What often triggers IMS is acute or chronic stress. Focusing on two crucial times of life when male hormones are shifting rapidly-adolescence/young adulthood and midlife-Jed Diamond reports on the latest research from international experts on men's health and hormones; describes in detail the symptoms of IMS; explains how the volatile mood swings of the syndrome can wreak havoc with a man's closest relationships and provides advice on preventing, diagnosing, and treating IMS. Just as when he began researching his landmark book on male menopause, Jed Diamond is at the forefront of this controversial subject. He offers readers the most comprehensive, insightful coverage of IMS-and the practical wisdom he imparts will help millions.

Give It a Name: The Making of a Newly "Discovered" Condition.......2005-07-26
IMS: Irritable Male Syndrome. Yes, more and more men are suffering from this condition it seems. Diamond traces the supposed underlying causes, including shifts in hormonal levels that affect mood and outlook. It is of course not surprising that age, diet, and lifestyle play a significant role in hormonal levels. Nor is it surprising that sudden shifts of hormone levels take place during times of acute stress.
For years psychologists have done just this sort of thing, namely conduct massive, year-old studies, utilizing thousands of dollars of research and grant money to conclude such obvious truisms as finding a compatible lover is difficult (an actual study conducted over three years using college interns who did "field assignments" at local clubs and bars). Yes, and indeed, when you're under stress, your hormones, you know, fluctuate and change. What a surprise.
So now, Diamond has taken a truism and given it this name IMS. It almost sounds like some feminist joke. I can almost see Pfizer running adds on TV. You can envision this: a man in his late forties comes come from a hard days work, is greeted by his wife who yells downstairs to him if he picked up the loath of bread and mild for the kids. Little Tommy didn't put his toys away and they litter the entire living room floor. The family dog comes running over to him barking, the leach in his mouth. He hasn't taken off his coat yet, and his wet umbrella is making a mess on the carpet. Suddenly little Susie comes around the corner shouting "Daddy, daddy, Tommy hit me!" His mind is still reeling over the project he'll have to revise tonight (it means staying up late again because his boss decided to revise it-yet again). "What was that?" he asks himself. "Damn! I forgot the bread and milk" he says to himself. Then the wife yells down again: "I left the bills on the table for you! Make sure to take of them tonight!" The job! The kids! The dog! The bills! The bread! "Everyone!" he exclaims. "Quiet down and give me a minute here!" IMS: It can hit any man at any time. But thanks to the happy little pill, Mr. Smith can find a new peace of mind and renewed, claim outlook on life. (And Pfizer if you make such a pill and run this add, I want royalties or I'm suing.)
So men get irritable when stressed or overwhelmed. Gee, who'd have guess. The problem seem to worse as they age. Wow, who'd have thought that, eh? But now, you see, what are by any real measure the everyday trails and tribulations of life, which grow in intensity with age for no other reason that the burdens of greater responsibilities usually grows with age as well (the glorious payment for increased success), this all gets lumped under the title of IMS.
IMS now is anything from the blues to a low libido. "Oh, my Gawd!" a guy now thinks, "I'm just thirty and have the symptoms of IMS. What do I do?" It's ridiculous. Every man, everyone for that matter, regardless of age, experiences the blues, feels down, gets ticked off at life. As for midlife crisis, Diamond now assigns a change in supposed hormonal levels with IMS, and ludicrously argues that this is why there is a high correlation with what he terms an "irrational" need for men to bail out of marriages and run away.
But he has not shown that relationship, nor why the such a feeling is supposedly "irrational." He has conveniently left out a host of data showing that regardless of age, marriages tend to begin unraveling at around 16 years, the time it takes for a child to mature to adulthood. The so-called "seven year itch" is actually three for a man. Once a couple is past that, the next hump is 16 years. And this number persists across a range of ages. A man married at 18, say, is more likely to want to leave a marriage at around 35. A man that married at 25 is more likely to want to move on at around 42. A man married at 30, more likely to leave at around 50. Since most men get married at 30, it is not surprising that there are then a lot of men at around 50 wishing to exit a marriage. The reason is more rooted in biology than any thing else. Unlike a woman, that man is still reproductively viable. The origins of this trend then lie more in evolutionary psychology than in shifts in hormone levels.
Moreover, lots of men, stable in temperament and outlook often end their marriages just as abruptly out of a sense of malaise and tedium. They are not violent or aggressive or quarrelsome. Their decision was one not based on an emotional fit of irrational anger. In addition, however unintended, now creating this label known as IMS, there will be men that will find an excuse for otherwise inexcusable behaviors and conduct. "Judge, see I have IMS," I can easily envision the defense being made.
IMS has a catchy ring to it, but upon closer inspection it doesn't hold up well to scientific scrutiny, since it is really not advanced through science but rather trite observations and coinage of terms, relating to loosely related events that can have a multitude of different causes and not a necessarily universal underpinning to them.
A Must-Read for Every Woman with a Middle Aged Husband .......2005-04-13
After 25 years of a happy marriage, my husband became a stranger. He decided he was no longer in love with me, and wanted a life with more fun and passion. After I read Jed Diamond's book, I truly understood what my husband is and was going through. His book has given me more compassion and more hope for the future. This book is a road-map through a very distressing time of life. Whether you are the man or his wife- read this!
Thought-Provoking & valuable contribution.......2005-01-11
This is a thought-provoking book; I think Mr. Diamond has done us a service by popularizing the IMS (like Dr. Joyce Brothers popularized psychology and Gershom Scholem popularized Kabbalah). It must be pointed out that IMS is not a disease; it's a set of symptoms. There's a big difference. It's a bit like homelessness in that regard. Many diseases and problems present the same symptoms (watch "House" or "ER" or "Medical Investigation" sometime on TV). Thus, A Solution may either not exist (if there are many different causes (simultaneous or not) or may be hard to find. In this case, as with homelessness, the causes are many. The solutions, therefore, will vary depending upon the causes - not the symptoms. Significantly, Mr. Diamond includes chapters addressing many factors (causes) that create the IMS. He also presents "treatments" for those individual factors (e.g. the valuable Thought Record on page 217). This is excellent. He also provides considerable references in each chapter.
However, I think that he's overlooked a few things. Firstly, while he has Alice Miller as a reference, he doesn't include her theory of non-genetic inheritance in which learned behaviors are passed down over generations through children emulating parents when they become parents themselves (see "The Drama of the Gifted Child"). This, I believe, is a very significant factor in the IMS. Secondly, he does not include any Jungian typology in explaining human differences. For example, his intriguing analysis of the Beatles vs. the Rolling Stones seems to me a difference between E (extroverted behavior) vs. I (introverted). Indeed, the entire Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) may be a factor in IMS-especially considering the differences between spouses. Which leads into the questions: "what about those who do NOT develop IMS?" & "Why not?" It's hard to believe you could really understand IMS without understanding its opposite or control.
Furthermore, some of the factors seem a bit far-fetched. After taking a course on experimental design (a psychology course at George Washington University in DC), I am quite skeptical about scientific articles and research. We reviewed a great many technical, peer-reviewed journals-and found that a large proportion were invalid. Not necessarily wrong-invalid means that the conclusions were not fully justified by the study.
Finally, since Mr. Diamond includes spirituality (which I admire him for doing), he might consider the development of egolessness a la Tibetan Buddhism. It seems to me that (not withstanding the chemical factors) that ego has a lot to do with IMS. I would suspect that IMS results from a combination of factors depending upon the susceptibility of the people involved and the interrelationship of their psychological propensities. I do think that Mr. Diamond's advice regarding male initiation and male groups has a great deal of potential to depotentiate IMS.
The Irritable Male Syndrome:.......2004-12-17
I had read several other publications by Jed Diamond and found them all to very succinct and helpful. For five years my wife has been complaining that my behavior was erratic, that I would fly off the handle at the slightest provocation and she wanted her husband back. From my vantage point I could come up with all kinds of "reasons" why it was all her fault. Reading the Irritable Male Syndrome was one of the most self revealing things I have ever done. There wasn't a page where I didn't clearly see myself and behaviors that I found appalling, yet, there I was naked as could be. It is must reading for any man entering middle age or any man who has been told he is "acting strangely" don't brush off those comments. Read this book if you read nothing else. You won't totally eliminate the problem overnight, but I can assure you, you won't be able to hide. And when you acknowledge what is going on - then you can really get down to the nitty-gritty work of getting back on track. I applaude Jed not only for writing the book, but for openly sharing his own experiences. Now, I don't feel as if I am some kind of freak. In those five years, I not only lost a job, but a career! I gave up a testicle for having torqued it doing an exercise routine, my mother died, my son moved to Atlanta, and we had been married 30+ years. GET THE BOOK IT IS THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU'LL EVER MAKE. Bob Bruce, Cleveland, Ohio
A second chance for a third age.......2004-11-23
Around me I've watched men over 50 suddenly dissolve marriages, maltreat their spouses, trade long-cherished values for whim, fall victim to depression, or withdraw into impenetrable cocoons. And I've wondered why. It was logical to blame and disrespect them for their transgressions ... their failings of character.
That's until a sensitive psychotherapist had the consciousness and conviction to search for the origin of these problems. Why have so many loving and giving women and children had to endure so much heartache from men in their lives? Is this just selfishness or immaturity?
Finally, Jed Diamond provides answers with an empowering revelation that IMS is both manageable and treatable. This gently fulfilling book brings empathy, perspective, solutions and solace to those who suffer and those who suffer the consequences.
His articulate and sensitive voice belongs in any home where people are trying to understand and manage the inevitable and sometimes unwholesome consequences of male passages through life stages. The author speaks to a new awareness akin to the discovery of PMS and the liberation that this insight has brought to women.
Men deserve, and with this book receive, their own measure of social sensitivity to the most challenging times of life. So much pathology can be eliminated in families and relationships when enough people read this book.
Jed Diamond has given many a second chance to make their "third-age" more productive, happier, and less fraught with tribulation. His book is a breakthrough that this aging country - which tends to marginalize and disenfranchise its aging males - sorely needs.

An excellent cookbook........2006-10-07
The recipes are clearly written, easy to make, and very tasty. This book, more than any other, convinced me that it is practical to be a vegetarian. Most dishes take very little time to prepare, unlike earlier cookbooks that seemed to require the entire day. The meals are healthy, light, and varied.
Quick, healthy, and tasty "recipes" for the meditteranean eater........2006-04-01
I'm sure most people reading about "vegetarian middle-eastern" cookbooks are good cooks when they have the time and inclination. But I, for one, have grown bored with my own repertoire. Most cookbooks are more fun to read than to actually cook from. Or they have ingredients that, even living in New York City, seem annoyingly inaccessible.
This book has lots of very easy recipes that are healthy vegetarian (hardly any animal fat with the exception of yoghurt in cold dishes). I can imagine actually(!) making just about everything, there's even a section on arab desserts -- the easy kind made of farina. This is probably the best cookbook I've ever bought. I think it's useful whatever your level of cooking expertise, but you need to be a fan of the meditterranean diet. We're talking beans, legumes, olive oil, yoghurt, eggplant, a few other vegetables.
Recipe details:-- it's true most are simple, but unless you were raised in a middle-eastern family I don't know how you would've thought of these combinations -- even if you're say very familiar with Greek or Italian food, I think this is pretty new stuff.
Some "recipes" include: yoghurt ginger appetizer (includes almonds, onions, ginger, tomato);many types of lentil soups from various middle eastern countries (the egyptian one includes butter and cumin, the one from bahrain adds tomato, vermicelli, and ground coriander);fried pepper salad; orange and olive salad; beet salad; stuffed eggplant; and vegetable casserole.
Nothing sounds 'exciting' but it is all very accessible and well seasoned. It's like you could turn to this book and make every meal from it -- that is if you like meditterranean food.
Rich and Varied.......2005-11-20
I love this book. It has such a great variety of recipes from every country of the middle east. I have made recipes from this book that I have shared with middle easterners and westerners, and have recieved many compliments from everybody. The recipes are very clear and well written.
Interesting and Useful.......2005-08-12
I checked this book out from my local library, and will be sad to return it this week. It was interesting to read through, to see some of the different customs associated with different recipes and regions. I also enjoyed learning how the same food (like falafel) differs from place to place. So far, I have only prepared one recipe, falafel Yemeni style, and they were delicious. The directions were clear and easy to follow.

SSeq: not just for eq riders.......2001-05-26
This book was absolutely fabulous. It gives information about the most popular breeds that compete in saddelseat equitation, and Helen Crabtree is especcially helpful with all of her years of experience. Even though the book is more than 20 years old, the lessons inside remain true. This is a timeless book that should be read by all saddleseat riders to enhance their possible performance in and out of the show ring.
Saddle Seat Equitation by Helen K. Crabtree.......2000-07-13
This is an absolutely superb treatise on Saddle Seat Equitation, particularly for those new to the sport. Even for experienced Saddle Seat riders, there is probably no clearer explanation of the basics of showing the saddle horse anywhere, and we all need a bit of review ocasionally! The book covers a wide scope of subjects connected with the training of horse and rider to enter the world of riding and showing in the Saddle Seat discipline. Crabtree adresses such critical but sometimes overlooked subjects as the role a rider's parents can and should play at shows, beauty in the pairing of rider and horse, and teaching the adult show rider. What it offers in scope, it lacks in depth - and this is deliberate, since it is aimed at the new rider/trainer. Although every rider would benefit vastly from reading this book, especially the sections on the Saddle Seat Equitation tests, more advanced riders will not find it satisfying in terms of in-depth discussions of training or show ring techniques, as that is not its focus. But it is an extremely worthwhile book for riders of all levels, and it is also an eminently readable, delightful and informative chronicle of the Saddle Seat Equitation world from the 50s to the 80s.
This is a GREAT BOOK.......1999-09-03

The author, Helen Crabtree, is a noted horsewoman. She's won the AHSA Horsewoman of the Year Award and the United Professional Horseman Associations's Trainer of the Year award. She has trained over 75 World Champions with her methods. This book shares her expertise. The book deals with the mechanics of riding Saddle Seat, proper tack, and rider attire, but does not deal with judging Saddle Seat. The emphasis is on showing.

The Whole Package!.......2001-12-27
This book covers it all from breeding and conformation to showing and other disciplines ASB's are suited for. Very informative! I've had this book for 4 or 5 years, and I still have a hard time putting it down! GREAT pictures! Explains the different gaits and training equipment that Saddlebreds use. Also gives alot of information about the breeds used to make the Saddlebred. Includes information and pictures of the great Saddlebreds from the past. Great all around book, shows a little bit of every aspect that comes along with this breed!
The American Saddlebred Horse.......2001-12-27
I found this book to be informative in a brief way, however for a hard back book that measures 8.75" tall by 6.5" wide with only 48 pages it can't justify the price... As I wrote it is an informative book but not for that price.
Isn't there something better out there?.......2001-06-08
This grossly overpriced item has the look of a Golden Book. The photographs are basically a collection of victory passes taken by horse show photographers. The quality of the reproductions of those photographs is poor, and the cropping is even worse. Shouldn't younger readers expect a quality product, too?
This book really showed how truly great this breed is........1999-04-07
I really liked this book it gave historical and ancestory background. It compared the olden days American Saddlebred show horse to the present day flashy, bold-trotting, and that show horse we all know today as the one that makes a grand entrance into that show ring kinda' horse. Of course this horse is America's breed there is no other horse like it!!!

Spindletop Unwound: A True Story of Greed, Ambition and Murder in the First Degree
ASIN: 1571688870 |
Book Description
Black Gold to Bluegrass is the first such work that concentrates wholly on the Second Spindletop Oil Boom and what happened afterwardtaking the story from the oil fields of Southeast Texas and Louisiana to the Bluegrass of Kentucky.
After partnering with Thomas Peter Lee of Houston, Frank Yount, water-well driller turned wildcatter, struck it rich, and the Yount-Lee Oil Company began a remarkable march that almost took it to the top of the oil industry. Although he used some of his wealth to benefit his fellowman, Frank Yount, also put together a priceless collection of antique violins, and some of the classiest and most expensive automobiles of the day, including three Duesenbergs and a Cord. He built a state-of-the-art Saddlebred training facility in Beaumont, hired dashing horseman Cape Grant to run it, and directed him to take the horses of Spindletop Stables to competitive shows throughout the countyand win!
Frank Yount died young at age 53 in November 1933. Within two years, Pansyhis wife and principal heirand the investors in the Yount-Lee Oil Company sold the enterprise to Houston attorney Wright Morrow for then what amounted to the third-largest financial transaction in American business history. Morrow, who later became one of the giants of Texas politics, immediately parceled off most of Yount-Lee's oil assets to Stanolind (Standard Oil of Indiana), a subsidiary of the giant Standard Oil conglomerate which later became Amoco. In spite of the magnitude of this transaction, when expressed in Depression era dollars, it was later widely acknowledged that no one, save perhaps Frank Yount himself, fully understood the astronomical significance and value of the Yount-Lee holdings.
Pansy, no less independent and colorful than her husband (but somewhat more flamboyant) took her part of the family's fortune and moved Spindletop Stables to a 1,066 acre show farm in the horse country of Kentucky, building a 45,000 square foot mansion which she named Spindletop Hall, the centerpiece of the new and extremely successful Spindletop Farm. The farm became the most innovative saddle horse breeding facility of its time, and Pansy became a legend in horse circles.
Using an array of previously unknown primary source materials from the Yount-Manion family archives, photographs never before published, and recently discovered film, McKinley and Riley present a book filled with incredible acts of generosity, long-standing controversies, intrigues, and twists and turns at every point.
Black Gold to Bluegrass is a must for general readers and scholars alike, whose interests lie in Saddlebreds, antique automobiles, or violins; and for oil enthusiasts, the book paints a rags-to-riches story of a true wildcatter turned contemporary hero who embodies the American dream.

SPINDLETOP.......2006-05-17
Really a fascinating read. The saga of the Yount's, it truly a Texas tale. I really enjoyed the vintage photos, I have seen the oil manisons in Beaumont and they are quite spectacular, though the most famous the McFaddin Mansion was not shown, but this was a book that focused mainly on the Younts and though their mansion on Calder is long gone, the Great Gatsbyish Caldwood mansion is still extant and still breathtaking. This book is well researched and I believe anyone with an interest in a great story will enjoy this book: Mrs. Yount was one of a kind. Highly recommended.
Great and accurate book.......2006-02-16
This is a very readable and very interesting account of the rise of the Yount-Lee Oil Company and Pansy Younts subsequent contribution to the American Saddlebred Horse industry. This is unlike previous accounts in that this account is ACCURATE and based completely in fact. I enjoyed it immensly and would recommend it to one and all.
an excellent and very readable book.......2005-05-22
Black Gold To Bluegrass is an excellent and very readable book about the Second Spindletop Oil Boom, which occurred in 1925 in Beaumont, Texas. The authors have very diligently researched all their facts and have made the people involved in this story seem very real to the reader.

A good book from the Treasured Horses series........2004-09-10
Eleven-year-old Patience Long, who lives on a Louisiana cotton plantation in 1812, is excited when she learns that her late grandfather has left her his American Saddlebred horse, Blue. Patience loves horses, and she can't wait to have one of her very own. But she is so excited to ride Blue that she ends up in trouble with her parents, who expect her to behave like a young lady. Then the worst happens, and Blue is stolen by a horse thief -- and the father of her friend Yonie, an Acadian, is suspected of the crime. Can Patience and Yonie find the real thief and rescue Blue in time?
This book was pretty good, but the plot was very predictable. Still, it is a sweet and charming story, and young girls who enjoy horse stories or historical fiction are sure to like reading it.
Gone!.......2000-06-14
Patience's grandfather leaves her his Saddlebred horse,Blue, when he dies. Patience loves riding and careing for Blue. But when Blue is horsenapped and Patience's best friend's father is accused of stealing her, can Patience turn the tide to find Blue and proove his innocence?

As a highly skilled fiber artist raised and trained in Japan but residing in the United States for the past decade and a half, Kumiko Sudo brings an interesting combination of Eastern and Western sensibilities to her work. She draws on the ancient Japanese motif of the kamon, or family crest, utilizing these varied designs as the basis for a collection of one-of-a-kind quilts. Yet she fashions them out of materials that, though they have a very Japanese flavor, are actually contemporary American fabrics (and therefore easily approximated by modern stitchers). She provides color photos, setting diagrams, brief basic instructions, and full templates for 30 gorgeous quilt blocks. Quilters seeking a vibrant new take on the traditional Western quilt block should enjoy making these lovely designs. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Presents 30 extraordinary quilt designs derived from crests dating back to more than a thousand years. Centuries-old designs are combined with new, rich color choices and contemporary fabrics for an effect never seen in quiltmaking. Each block is accompanied by the story behind the design and step-by-step instructions.

Perfection!.......2006-05-18
This book is full of beautiful ideas. Most of the projects are small so the "fear of applique" is tempered by the fact that you can make one crest, frame it with beautiful fabric borders and you have a terrific piece of art without having to commit to a huge applique project. But the journey is well worth it - everything I've made with Ms. Sudo's inspirational direction has turned out perfectly. I'm anxious to get started on more!
Circles Of The East.......2005-09-03
This is a great quilt book with wonderful pictures and great instructions..it arrived in plenty of time and in good shape
Wonderful!.......2003-07-17
I saw this book at a quilt store a couple months ago, and IMMEDIATELY fell in love with it. I'm not a big quilter (I also cross-stitch) but I like applique and now I'm doing a queen size one with fifteen of the patterns in this book! It's great!
This book wakes up the artist within........1998-06-25
To say that Kumiko Sudo's Circles of the East is inspirational is an understatement. It is a beautiful book to read, even if you never make one quilt block from it's pages. The whole history of Japanese Crest designs is entertaining enough, but the fact that I could actually replicate Kumiko's art is incredible. I made the Gingko design using my machine with great results although all Kumiko's work is done by hand. Her templates are exact, but she does not include full size placement diagrams. I dreaded getting to the placement part of sewing my block, but it was way easier than I thought...The most interesting aspect of her work to me is her seemingly complete disregard of grainline and total obsession with placement of fabric motifs...it gives her blocks stunning symmetry that I haven't seen anywhere else...really exotic!
The most beautiful & inspiring quilt book I have ever seen........1998-03-20
I accidentally found this book in a quilt shop. I could hardly wait to get started. The photos are awesome, the workmanship is unparalleled and the use of fabrics is inspirational. The book is well written and the instructions are clear.
There are no instructions for Kumiko's method of binding these quilts.

Food for thought.......2003-07-21
This book is the result of a study.
It is about the expierence women had after getting back a flagged test or after getting a routine amniocentesis based on age or history. It is not a book about whether or not you should have an amnio it is about what your choices are and how women dealt with their results.
This books will make you think about the abuse that routine prenatal tests can cause a woman and hopefully it will help you deciede whether or not you want the test done.
I think this is a well writen book.
Amniocentesis . . . The Road To Abortion.......2000-03-01
While not exactly what I expected I found this book to be rather eye opening. The premise of the author, while she wrote about 100 or so women she interviewed, was that amniocentesis is a test that, if the results are bad, leads to abortion. In other words, this test gives women the opportunity to selectively abort children who are seen as otherwise imperfect in today's society. Whether or not you support the test, this book gives you much food for thought. A word of caution though, this may not be the right book to read if you are looking for the right answers to an amniocentis you are contemplating right now. It may be better read while you are not pregnant.
A social commentary, not a reassurance.......2000-02-04
I bought this book in the middle of some very difficult decisions whether to have an amniocentisis following a positive MSAFP. The premise, that for many women pregnancy is tentative for the first trimester because of fear of miscarriage and for the second trimester because of fear of negative results from the amnio really fits my experience. I was hoping this book would provide some validation and reassurance. It didn't. It is very much a social commentary which subtly criticizes women for wanting to control whether or not to bear a child with a disability or fatal deformity. I was hoping to have some validation of my experience, and instead I felt judged and criticized.

Book Description
The World of Francis Cooper is a biographical exploration of Francis Cooper, who practiced photography as an aesthetic recreation while a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania. It offers an unusual perspective on turn-of-the century American photography by examining the work of an unknown avocational photographer.
Cooper was a native Philadelphian of sufficient means to indulge in several recreations: competitive shooting, bicycling, and photography. From 1896 to 1901 he traveled to the Pennsylvania countryside to hunt, fish, bicycle, court his wife, and photograph landscapes, genre farm scenes, and the spoils of his hunts. In the city he took snapshots of his family, and of his friends and colleagues, as well as candids and genre studies of the romance of city life. Largely confined to this five-year period, his work in photography ranged over several photographic practices from landscapes clearly attributable to the naturalistic school to pictorialist cityscapes.
The World of Francis Cooper represents a social approach to photographic history and argues for a cultural understanding of photography as social practice. Reflecting on the life and work of Francis Cooper is a way to deepen our understanding of the place photography has assumed in the lives of many Americans while at the same time having the pleasure of seeing his wonderful photographs.

well written memoir.......2005-10-06
This book is a warm, witty and intricate look at the author's childhood and teenage years in the Bronx. The prose sucks you in, and you are given enough detail so that you feel that you are right there with the author.
However, if you want to give it as a gift to a young bookworm, be forewarned that it contains graphic sexual content, including a blow-by-blow description of the male and female anatomy, and several descriptions of sexual (and physical) abuse.
Jewish immigrant comes of age.......2003-04-18
Kate Simon's little book will doubtless become a classic of the genre: memoir, coming of age, the immigrant experience, sexual awakening, life on the stoops in the Bronx...
Told unsentimentally and with a refreshingly straightforward style, Simon manages to convey both the sense and the essence of her unusual childhood to her readers.
Sometimes uncomfortable..........2002-01-17
The frank portrayal of Simon's relationship with her father in this book is refreshing, as are many of the stories about daily life as a girl growing up Jewish in the Bronx after WWI. However, the parts dealing with sexual advances of older man and, in general, older people's sexual opportunism with younger people were things I found really disturbing. Simon tells these anecdotes well and evenly, but as a reader, I felt frustrated and helpless reading so much about the way the taboos of sexuality trapped kids into silence about their victimization.
An unintentionally poetic inspiring memoir.......1998-07-28
Good fortune was with me when I happened upon this book last year. It is now one of my all-time favorites and I went on to read the two books that chronologically follow this one. My only complaint is that Ms. Simon died before she had the chance to tell us every minute detail about her unextraordinary, extraordinary life. A Jewish immigrant household in the Bronx shaped Kate's wonderful and unique personality. She shares her childhood - engrossing tales of urban fairy tale embedded in the real world of poverty -with the aplomb of a grand story-teller. If only I could have met her. She is the baudy humorous glamorous grandmother we all wish was our own.

A superbly presented autobiographical story.......2002-05-10
Bronx Primitive: Portraits In A Childhood is Kate Simon's superbly presented autobiographical story of a Jewish immigrant girl's coming-of-age experiences in New York in the opening decades of the 20th Century. The harsh realities of 1916 New York City for the Jewish immigrant community in general, and Kate Simon in particular, are wonderfully expressed with a flowing narrative showcasing a young girls dreams, hopes, and possibilities. Enhanced with an informative introduction by actress Bea Arthur, and magnificently narrated by Barbara Rosenblat, this complete and unabridged audiobook edition of Kate Simon's Bronx Primitive is a welcome and highly recommended addition to personal, community library, Women's Studies, 20th Century American History, and Judaic Studies audiobook collections.
