A Londoner's life in Zambia and why he was ordered to issue plans for action against RAF planes and British Troops.
Book Description
This is the first publication of the 170 letters written by the Abbé Dominique Chaix to Dr. Dominique Villars between 1772 and 1799, when they were collaborating on the publication of the first flora for the old province of Dauphiné. The letters reveal the uncertainties of plant classification in the late 18th century, but, more generally, the penetration of the Enlightenment into a remote, alpine region of France. Both botanists were of recent peasant origin, invading, albeit deferentially, an intellectual field, traditionally the monopoly of their social betters. The letters also document the enthusiasms, anxieties, and perils of rural clerical life during the French Revolution, and give occasional evidence about the deforestation of the mountains.

Book Description
The inspiring and hilarious story of Patch Adams's quest to bring free health care to the world and to transform the way doctors practice medicine
• Tells the story of Patch Adam's lifetime quest to transform the health care system
• Released as a film from Universal Pictures, starring Robin Williams
Meet Patch Adams, M.D., a social revolutionary who has devoted his career to giving away health care. Adams is the founder of the Gesundheit Institute, a home-based medical practice that has treated more than 15,000 people for free, and that is now building a full-scale hospital that will be open to anyone in the world free of charge. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? Not for those who know and work with Patch. Whether it means putting on a red clown nose for sick children or taking a disturbed patient outside to roll down a hill with him, Adams does whatever is necessary to help heal. In his frequent lectures at medical schools and international conferences, Adams's irrepressible energy cuts through the businesslike facade of the medical industry to address the caring relationship between doctor and patient that is at the heart of true medicine.
All author royalties are used to fund The Gesundheit Institute, a 40-bed free hospital in West Virginia.
Adams' positive vision and plan for the future is an inspiration for those concerned with the inaccessibility of affordable, quality health care.
Today's high-tech medicine has become too costly, impersonal, and grim. In his frequent lectures to colleges, churches, community groups, medical schools, and conferences, Patch shows how healing can be a loving, creative, humorous human exchange--not a business transaction.

He Is The Real Deal.......2007-04-13
This book was an inspiration to read and also a trip down memory lane for me. I had the pleasure of knowing Hunter "Patch" Adams many years ago in Northern Virginia. I was a Stewardess at the time and was working for United Air Lines. I was based in Washington DC and lived in Norther Virginia. I first met Patch at a nutrition clinic where the woman running the clinic relied on muscle biopsies to let her know what nutrients a person was missing. Patch did the muscle biopsy. From that encounter a friendship developed and I used to visit he and his group at their home on weekends. I did this for several years and was able to observe the kindness and caring first hand. During those years many people came to the commune for medical care, myself included. It is joyful to see that Patch is getting the recognition he deserves.

This laughing doctor is no joke!.......2006-09-28
If you are interested in making this world a better place and if you are looking for role models, read about Patch Adams.
I've seen the movie, I've read the book, and everytime I think of Dr.Adams or speak of him to my friends and students, it's an inspiration.
I promise you. This laughing doctor is no joke. We need more people like him in this world.
So, read the book, watch the movie... and hopefully it will inspire you to take action!
The World's Doctor.......2006-05-23
Whoever reads this book and absorbs its messages will become a healthier individual and a better citizen of the world.
First, Patch examines the American healthcare system. He explains why corporate healthcare is a contradiction and cannot be permitted in a healthy society. He shows how the doctor-patient relationship has become more like a business interaction, and how this is relationship in itself is a fundamental plague on America.
Extending his experiences in healthcare to all society, Patch observes that we have lost touch with ourselves and each other, with nature, and lost perspective on the joy and wonder of life.
This criticism is where 99.9% of books and people stop. Patch is one of the few in the world who is not only deeply aware of the problems but has detailed plans on how to fix them and acts on those plans. In the book, he outlines his model for personal living and for a better society. A model based on the radical principles of joy and fun:
"The most revolutionary act anyone can commit is to be happy."
"We hear far more about pain because it seems to be associated with maturity. Enthusiastic joy is associated with childhood--as if it were something to outgrow."
Reading this book gave me a new conception of health. It's not just physical or personal like the parts of a car, it's psychological, intellectual, spiritual, social, political, economic, local, international, and interpersonal. Live creatively! Discover the fun we can have together! Live in peace! Now that's good medicine.
Finally! Medicine for people not for profit!!.......2006-02-25
+++++
This book by Hunter "Patch" Adams, M.D. (with Maureen Mylander) is about a social revolutionary who has devoted his life to giving away health care. Adams is founder of the "Gesundheit" Institute, a home-based medical practice in West Virginia that has treated more then 15,000 people for free. The Gesundheit Institute's dream is to build a free, full-scale hospital that will be open to anyone in the world.
This book is divided into two parts. The first part generally deals with Patch's philosophy on medicine while the second part describes the dream of opening up a free hospital.
Below I will state the title of each chapter for each part and give a quotation that represents the essence of each chapter.
PART 1: (About Patch and his medical philosophy)
(1) A health care system in pain. "I believe that health care [providers] who feel burned out are not allowing the "enrapture potential" in the doctor-patient relationship."
(2) An ideal medical practice. "Nosy, curious healers who make house calls will have the time of their lives!"
(3) Humor and healing, or why we're building a silly hospital. "People crave laughter as if it were an essential amino acid."
(4) Art, nature, and imagination. "Nature tops the list of potent tranquilizers and stress reducers. The mere sound of moving water has been shown to lower blood pressure."
(5) Rebuilding self, family, community, world. "I graduated from medical school `head smart.' While living in community, however, I have built buildings, farmed, raised goats, produced movies, and learned rope walking and unicycling."
PART 2: (The dream of a free hospital)
(6) The pilot period. "People often ask, 'How did you earn a living [at the Gesundheit Institute] if you weren't charging your patients.'"
(7) The dream defined. "[In our hospital], we are a company of friends, of givers and receivers, of doctors and patients."
(8) *Gareth's Story. "We watched a beautiful, orange sunset in silence and Patch turned to me [Gareth, a patient] and said, 'Do you have arthritis while watching this.'"
(9) *Organizing dreamers. "The entire purpose of a structure at Gesundheit is to support people's enthusiastic efforts to make the world a better, therefore healthier, place."
(10) Building a dream. "The atmosphere of [our free] hospital is intended to avoid the indifference projected by so many [other health care] facilities and to convey joy, enthusiasm, peace, caring, and openness."
(11) *Living on the land. "Dream. Dream wild. Extremely wild dreams. Somewhere back there is a wild seed waiting. Of that I am sure."
(12) Light a candle: how can I help? ("I" refers to readers of this book.) "Medicine practiced as a business [as it is today] hurts everyone. The true reward of medicine come from helping others and from self-discovery...Service is essential to healing and the pathway to inner peace."
(13) Passion and persistence. "I don't want people to be amazed by our passion and persistence, but inspired by us to work long and hard for what they believe in."
(14) Five years have passed. (This chapter is for the year 1998). "[This] book has really helped bring our ideas more clearly to a much wider audience all over the world. We get thousands of letters telling how our work has inspired similar projects and people-not just in the health field but in all human endeavors."
(* These chapters are not written by the authors.)
There are fifteen black and white pictures found in the middle of this book. There are also diagrams. I found all of these amusing and informative.
Those people who feel or have been brainwashed into believing that there is nothing wrong with today's health care system will probably not appreciate this book. (This statement especially applies to those people who profit from it.) All other people should find this honest book enlightening.
The movie "Patch Adams" starring Robin Williams was, I felt, very good. Even though I saw this movie first, I still learned a lot from this book.
Finally, to catch up on the latest developments of the Gesundheit Institute, I recommend visiting Patch Adams' internet site.
In conclusion, I have not seen a family physician for fifteen years (and have vowed never to see one or any other medical provider for the rest of my life). However, if I do become seriously ill (and the illness would have to be severe), I would gladly welcome the services of Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams!!!
(first published 1993; last chapter for the year 1998; publisher's preface; foreword; author's acknowledgements; co-author's preface; introduction; 2 parts or 14 chapters; main narrative 195 pages; bibliography; index)

You can never get enough!!!.......2004-06-17
Patch Adam's life was portrayed by Robin Williams on the Hollywood Movie with the same name. Nevertheless, Patch Adam's life isn't just what you see in the movie, actually it is much more interesting and valuable when you read the true insights of this now-famous doctor.
Patch proposes a new way to treat diseases, by treating the persons. Humor, fun, magic tricks, sunsets, animals, or whatever is needed to make a person feel better and forget about his/her pain; is his philosophy.
The book describes the road Patch has taken to fullfill his dream, and the goals he has fixed for himself and his team. Working to give free, highest quality medicine is not an easy job. Still Patch smiles with his red nose, clownish hair, and funny clothes. You can never get enough about Patch, he is inspiring, funny, and intelligent. Surely this book will make you rethink lots of concepts and ideas. Great Book!!!

Korean cuisine is a tantalizing blend of sour, sweet, hot, burning hot, salty, bitter, and nutty, or so writes Hi Soo Shin Hepinstall, author of Growing Up in a Korean Kitchen. Part autobiography and part cookbook, this remarkable work provides a practical introduction to a cuisine Americans have encountered with delight, and a poignant memoir of a time and place in which an average family meal could consist of seven or more dishes, hierarchically served according to gender and family standing (males and grandmas ruled).
Beginning with a scene-setting journey to the author's childhood home, the book then provides a detailed account of relevant ingredients, equipment, techniques, and sauces and pastes (many based on soy beans and red pepper). Over 175 recipes follow for a wide range of everyday and special-occasion dishes, from rice and cereal specialties, including an intriguing fried rice with chicken, mushrooms, and kimchi; to fresh salad and vegetable dishes such as Sautéed Spring Garlic; to barbecued specialties like Fried Beef Ribs; to desserts and confections. A chapter on celebratory dishes, such as the extraordinary, multi-ingredient Celestial Hot Pot, is balanced by a homey section on stews and dishes such as Braised Pork Spareribs. Throughout, Hepinstall offers asides that place the food in its cultural context, variations, and technical information. With an illuminating section on tea and other drinks, the book makes an exciting introduction to a kind of cooking Westerners can now prepare and enjoy at home. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Part memoir and part cookbook, GROWING UP IN A KOREAN KITCHEN is one woman's cultural and culinary story, weaving childhood reminiscences with lovingly gathered recipes. With descriptions of the traditional Korean kitchen, preparations for special feast days, and the rituals of everyday family meals, author Hi Soo Shin Hepinstall draws an engaging portrait of a seldom-viewed way of life. Easy-to-follow recipes, largely handed down through oral tradition, cover the wide range of main and side dishes, from the sumptuous elegance of "royal cuisine" to simpler countryside cooking. Korean cuisine has emerged as one of the most exciting and robust tastes of Asia, with great variety and some of the world's most sophisticated techniques for pickling and cooking with garlic and hot pepper. Cooks of all levels, as well as armchair travelers, will want to add this book to their collection.
Customer Reviews:
Very impressed..........2007-07-03
Actually, I haven't read the entire book yet, but her recipes are features on www.hmart.com, the marvellous Korean supermarket. I am so amazed by her knowledge and her clear explanation of Korean food. This is the missing piece of the puzzle to Korean cooking that I have been searching for. I feel very priviledged that she shares her knowledge with us.
wonderful coverage of exciting food and culture.......2007-03-14
I bought this book and few other Korean cookbooks after traveliing to Seoul several times (my wife and I adopted three childen there). This is has been my favorite because of the range of recipes, the detailed instructions, and the intimate stories. It's rare for a cookbook to excel on so many levels. I only wish the book had more photographs (and color ones), but this is the Korean food I have enjoyed in Seoul and it's what I'm teaching my children to cook. They are as happy with it as I am.
truly authentic korean cookbook that bridges the gap.......2006-01-29
I have several Korean cookbooks (okay, I am a cookbook junkie and it is probably more like ten -- and, yes, there are at least ten out there, although many are hard to find and/or out of print, and then there is that whole subgroup of watered down ones written by Western missionaries that are . . . quaint). Until I found this one I mostly used Dok Suni by Jenny Kwak and Practical Korean Cooking (aka The Bible) by Noh Shin-Hwa. Dok Suni is great for a novice and has great stories about growing up Korean American. Practical Korean Cooking is like the Betty Crocker for Korean Food, step by step, and lots and LOTS of glossy colour pictures, but kind of skimpy on personality or writing and is known as the book Korean mothers give their daughters when they get married. Hepinstall's book bridges the gap between these two.
As with Dok Suni, Growing Up in a Korean Kitchen is written with much love and great memories about growing up in a Korean kitchen. Hers is that of a traditional Korean upper-class City household, and her book beautifully covers a comprehensive list of recipes including dishes traditionally reserved for the upper crust and royalty, replete with annecdotes and reminiscences from her childhood in a time and place that no longer exists. As I usually use cookbooks more as guidebooks than instruction manuals, I did not find the lack of pictures or "complete instructions" taxing; if you do, bundle this book with Noh's and you would have the whole package as recipe-wise, the books overlap a great deal, although the formats could not be more different.
I am an adult Korean adoptee whose rediscovery of my native culture began with my love of good, unWesternized Korean food. Everything I know about Korean food I had to learn through a tutor (she taught to to make kimchi [no measurements, mix with your hands, taste as you go, start with the informal i.e. easier kimchis and work your way up to the stuffed ones] and how to harvest fernbracken and seaweed), restaurants (I like the bustling country-style ones the best, and if they have those fat iron pots sunken into the floor out back, so much the better), and through my cookbooks. I recently moved out West and had to leave most of my cookbooks behind and like a fool I left this one in storage back East. I can remember how to make kimchi and banchan and pancakes and other favourites like yookgaejang, bibimbap, bulgogi, and kimbap, but anything else ---!!!! I miss it at least once a week, and that is more than I can say about the other nine!
A pleasure to read and great to use.......2005-08-31
I was born in Korea to a Korean mother and an American father. I love cooking Korean food and my friends and husband enjoy eating it. Ms. Hepinstall seems to be using what my family calls "city" or fancy recipes. Many of her foods do not have the "country" flavor that I am used to from the port city PoHang. BUT, the recipes are wonderful. My book seems to be missing a page or two. In the index, when I look up crab soup, it is not on the page indicated. I would still recommend this book to seasoned cooks and patient students. While you can simplify some of her dishes, many are authentic and delicious. She loves using walnuts and the fancy sil kochu (which my family did not)- I leave those out often and just use coarse Korean red crushed pepper and taste no difference. Like all good cooks, you have to take her recipe and make it your own by experimenting. I love the pictures and the stories that accompany this book. If you want a simpler book that keeps authentic flavors alive, I recommend Dok Suni. My younger, less experienced sister owns that one and it's lovely. Happy Eating!
The best and most comprehensive Korean cookbook available.......2005-04-22
Having a Korean mom and spending many years living in Korea, I never had the opportunity or desire to actually cook Korean food until recently. In Korea, we had household staff who cooked and cleaned. I was literally not allowed in the kitchen. A pity, since I love Korean food. But fortunately many Korean immigrants live in my area and there are many restaurants to choose from.
Recently I have developed into a wannabe gourmet cook, collecting and reading many cookbooks of various cuisines, and trying many new recipes in the kitchen. Hepinstall's book is the only one I've found available that so comprehensively contains all the traditional Korean dishes I crave, with a bounty of authentic recipes.
Some have complained that the recipes are complicated but I have no idea what these readers mean or what they expected. I found each recipe to be thorough but hardly complicated. Could there be shortcuts? Well sure, knock yourself out. You don't have to soak meats in cold water before making that soup or stew. I don't soak the oxtails for my favorite soup. But knowledge is a good thing. It's good to know traditional cooking techniques, whether you choose to follow them or not. Cookbooks are not bibles. Perhaps someone should write a Korean 30-Minute Meals, heh!
I've made my favorites and tried other dishes I've never had before, all to my satisfaction. One thing I haven't tried yet is making kimchee - maybe soon.
Like others have stated, the glaring drawback to this book is the lack of full-color photos of the finished dishes, let alone any of the steps in progress. Maybe a future edition of this fine book will add this.

Book Description
With the moon as a metaphor, Khalili takes us from the poetic moon of the ghettos of his childhood to the scientific moon of his presentations to NASA for lunar base construction using on-site earth and ceramics. He chronicles his own transformation renouncing his successful architecture practice and voyaging into the desert, ultimately firing and glazing the first Ceramic Houses. Inspired by the mystic poetry of Rumi, and the unity of the universal elements of earth, water, air, and fire, with his technical background he presents his proposals for earth and ceramics lunar bases to NASA.

Veteran journalist Sheila Weller's childhood memoir is as starkly compelling as it is emotionally and historically complex, lifting the veil on a life of rarified privilege. Weller's father was a pioneering Los Angeles neurosurgeon, her mother the acclaimed Hollywood gossip columnist Helen Hover, and uncle Herman Hover owned Tinseltown's most famous nightspot, Ciro's. Nonetheless, Weller reveals a childhood haunted by dysfunction and denial, a hidden familial drama played out in the idyllic village that was Beverly Hills in the '40s and '50s, and one that segues to dark tragedy as it wends inexorably toward a final act scarred by scandal and life-shattering violence. Weller's richly detailed, emphatic prose skillfully interweaves ruminations on the phenomenon of American Jewish reinvention that drove her family of overachievers, with observations on the Old Hollywood movers and shakers who were her neighbors, friends, and casual acquaintances--reminiscences that are all the more poignant filtered through the wondrous eyes of a child. No mere star-studded autobiography, Weller's work here is framed by an almost palpable sense of personal exorcism and, crucially, a quest for ultimate familial redemption. It's an enlightening personal journey, one whose troubling tales of domestic disconnection may seem all-too-empathetic to many, yet one that ultimately finds a place of warm, if bittersweet, understanding. --Jerry McCulley
Book Description
In 1958, young Sheila Weller was living a charmed life with her family in Beverly Hills. Her father was a brilliant and charismatic brain surgeon. Her mother was a movie-magazine writer whose brother owned Hollywood's most dazzling night-club, Ciro's. Then her world exploded. After she witnessed her uncle's brutal attempt to kill her father, a whole store of family secrets and dramas unfolded, rivaling those that transpired in the nightclub's banquettes and dressing room every night. Weller has written a deeply felt memoir of her family's life contrasted with those most glamorous days of Hollywood during the forties and fifties. While vividly describing Lana Turner's, Frank Sinatra's, and Sammy Davis Jr.'s evenings-and break-downs-at Ciro's, she captures a whole subgroup of Ameri-can dreamers and casts a clear eye on her own family's turmoil and loss.
Customer Reviews:
Just a wonderful book, on many levels.......2004-05-09
How difficult it is to write honestly about one's own family, yet on this level--and several others--Sheila Weller triumphs. Her neurosurgeon father, her show-biz-journalist mother, and her uncle Herman, owner of a once-famous nightclub all had careers that had a profound influence on Sheila and her sister Liz.
The author's careful, meticulous documentation of those three livelihoods, plus a "you are there" look at her childhood in Beverly Hills (a decade before my childhood fifteen miles away) paint a many-faceted portrait of her family and the times, with joy and pain and glamour. The untimely deaths, the splits in the family bonds, all are described unflinchingly. Weller even gives a less-than-flattering description of her own girlhood, and how hard she tried to please a reserved father who reluctantly gave her a pet name, Brooksie. She was delighted until he added, "Because you babble."
An admirable effort from Sheila Weller. And bless her and her sister, for coming out whole!
A wonderful surprise!.......2003-04-03
When I ordered this book I thought I was buying an exposé about life at Ciro's in it's heyday, with emphasis on celebrities. Light summer reading, you know.. But this book is not about that and I could not have been more surprised or pleased. Sheila Weller's experiences as an adolescent trying to fit in with the Popular Girls rings so true that I felt like I was in Junior High again, only with her. The painful stories she relates about her family, especially about her father, made me think she must be a wonderfully strong woman to be able to write with such honesty. And with a wry sense of humor threaded throughout, even in the painful parts of her story. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.
kept me on my toes.......2003-03-23
this book was so interesting because it took you back in time to a whole different era, very glamorous, even if superficial. her gossip on the stars was really nothing compared to the drama her family played out. she's a strong person and rather than feeling disgusted and sorry for her you really cheer her on for her good sense and survival instinct.
Fascinating.......2003-02-10
Sheila Weller has told the story of her family lovingly and without self-pity. Although she describes many supremely painful moments - her rejection by her father is foremost - I never had the feeling she was wallowing in the past. She did her homework and the history of her parents and grandparents was more interesting than descriptions of the celebrities who visited Ciro's. We hear enough about celebrities these days. Weller maintains good tension throughout the book. Once I began reading I didn't want to put it down.
