                2 out of 5 stars Fishy.......2007-01-14

I didn't like this book. For one thing, if it were non-fiction, then why all the dialogue between him and his wife, which was more or less fiction, since who could remember that kind of detail all that time?

For another, there were significant omissions, like the biowarfare lab on Plum Island in New York, lyme disease, West Nile, mycoplasma, Royal Rife, Morgellon's, and a host of others. Not to mention the more convincing evidence that AIDS is from swine not cattle.

He also totally mis-understood milieu interior, which doesn't refer to political climate but the health of the host, affecting whether or not he will catch any illness he is exposed to, which was huge in the history of vaccine development.

Finally there is very convincing evidence that prion disease is environmental - copper deficiency in the face of manganese poisoning, which has been known since Andre Voisin wrote "Soil, Grass, and Cancer".

1 out of 5 stars Nice theory, too bad the sequence analyses of viral samples prove it wrong.......2005-11-23

Please read the science on this subject before becoming a "true believer" in this theory. Detailed study of the sequences of simian immunodeficiency viruses from many species of monkeys and chimps, compared to the sequences of viral samples from humans with HIV-1 or HIV-2 clearly show that Horowitz's theory is not consistent with the data. When in doubt I suggest going with the facts not speculation.

When a theory does not match the data - move on.

A good start point to enter the scientific literature is a review article "AIDS as a Zoonosis: Scientific and Public Health Implications", Hahn BH, Shaw GM, De Cock KM, Sharp PM, published in Science, 28 January 2000, Vol 287:607-614. Just go to the National Library of Medicine website at www.pubmed.gov and enter Hahn BH, Shaw GM, De Cock KM, Sharp PM then click on related articles to access the scientific literature.

4 out of 5 stars How to easily prove the critics wrong.......2005-07-11

Interestingly, the bad reviewers of this book have only convinced me of its accuracy. None of their criticisms strike me as being sound. A few of them criticize the book for scaring people, to which I would say that I only wish back in 1932, during my lifetime, someone would have, in a similar fashion, scared people about the Tuskegee Experiment. I also wish back in the 1700s someone would have scared the native americans before the British deliberately distributed smallpox infected blankets to them, killing off half of the tribes!

As to the argument that man did not know how to create the ebola virus in the 50s, the critics are not appropriately answering the scenarios raised by Dr. Horowitz. Specifically, Dr, Horowitz spends a great deal of time discussing the possiblities of:

                1) Careless "professionals" allowing contamination from existing virus samples.

                2) An existing virus, from one host, from which another host becomes infected, with the result being that the virus mutates in the new host to a variation of the original virus, a mutated virus for which not only can we not create, we also don't have a cure for (as in the case of AIDS).

                3) A criminally misguided government official, someone such as, say, a Henry Kissinger who we know touted the the benefits of population control, who might have sent signals to outfits such as the CIA whose job it is to be paranoid to the extreme and who could obtain funding for top secret virus research for which the "experts" writing reviews here would know none of the details of what man was, or was not, capable of creating in a lab.

This is a must read for any sane person who recognizes the foolishness of sticking your head in the sand to avoid seeing the lion charging at your butt.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to know why the goverment does this read on..........2004-06-16

I applaud the courage of Leonard Horowitz in exposing the truth about what the government has been up to for a long time. As a researcher I have uncovered many things that are almost too ugly to be believed. There are many out there wondering why anyone inside the government or out would do such hideous things. I strongly recommend the readers of this review to read the book "Bringers of the Dawn" by Barbara Marciniak. This book may also be hard to believe but the pieces of the puzzle will come together when you read this book. But hang on to your seats. If you also purchase the book "Power vs. Force" by Dr. David Hawkins, you will find a technique that will show you how to prove or disprove anything in either of the above books (or anything else for that matter). The answers are out there. We just have to keep searching.

5 out of 5 stars Not a conspiracy at all.......2003-09-02

In fact, the evidence is out there and you just need to look for it and put it all together......Horowitz has done all the hard work for you making this reading hard to put down even for a minute.
Not surprised at all at WHO involvement and coverups...and pretty much sits with the Global 2000 agenda signed off by Vance and Co....

                Great reading but scarry...

This is a great book for anyone looking for entertainment ideas. There are recipes for every occasion. I will be using it in many years to come since it is filled with wondeful ideas from cooking, to flower arranging. The recipes are multicultural.

This Williams-Sonoma cookbook is gorgeous. It has pictures for each of the recipes, and it's just a great entertaining book. It gives helpful tips on flower arranging, napkin folding, and table setting as well. It also has a glossary of special ingredients and techniques that some of the recipes use. It's a wonderful book, even though some of the recipes are a little too gourmet for me.

This opulent collection of fine recipes and impressive menu ideas is a collaboration between esteemed food writer Joyce Goldstein and Chuck Williams, the founder of the Williams-Sonoma kitchen stores. Their collective culinary know-how pays off in a big way--not only do their dishes look stunning on paper but they are also recipes that can be prepared with relative ease in the home kitchen.

Twenty-six set menus form the heart of the book, ranging from an Al Fresco Lunch to a Heritage Christmas Dinner. Each menu, whether for an informal soiree or a black-tie cocktail party, is accompanied by beverage ideas and inspiration for decorating the table. Stunning full-color photographs and easy-to-follow, step-by-step cooking instructions take the trepidation out of preparing these scrumptious foods. The closing chapter, "Elements of Entertaining," is particularly useful for new hosts. Here are basic instructions on how to fold fancy napkins, arrange cutlery, and make simple pie crusts.

The Williams-Sonoma Complete Entertaining Cookbook is an essential kitchen companion, a book that will make any dinner party go off with a brilliant bang. --Naomi Gesinger

3 out of 5 stars beautiful photos, but............2002-11-22

I bought this book on the strength of the other Amazon.com reviews and looked forward to receiving it. However, when I started reading it, I felt that there was very little in it that I actually wanted to cook. I am an accomplished cook and baker, own over 600 cookbooks, and not afraid to try new recipes. But some of the combinations in here seemed a bit unnatural, and the menus appear to be comprised of items which all require a fair amount of time and preparation. In my experience, the key to successful entertaining is striking a balance between a few showstopping dishes and those items which are of sufficient quality and freshness to be prepared and served simply, with a minimum of unneccessary flourishes. As much as I love to cook, I don't want to spend a week in the kitchen before a dinner party, do you? However, the photography is gorgeous and very inspiring, and there are a lot of tips which are worth reading. Although I will consult this book for certain things, like table decoration and the dessert recipes, I think the recipes out of the Southern Living books on the whole are better.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best reference book ever for entertaining !.......2002-01-07

This book is the perfect combination of elegant entertaining ideas and "how-to's". I just love the themed menus--there is everything from a formal tea, a holiday (Hannukah) buffet, a Mediterranean Easter feast to a romantic dinner for just two. If you don't want to reproduce the exact menu, you still get some great ideas as starting material for any kind of party you might want to give. The recipes are not overly elaborate. In fact, they are pretty easy yet well-chosen. I particularly like the salads. I also found this book useful for progressive dinner ideas.

Even better is the back section on "how-to." I absolutely LOVE the section on folding napkins, carving roasts, and proper table setting, all in one place.

This is now on the shelf as my chief entertaining reference book. Can't recommend it highly enough, especially at the price.

I entertain very often, and that's why I originally purchased this book. As it turns out, I use it several times a week just for the family. It's not only beautiful it's full of information. All of the recipes have color picures and many recipes have alternatives if it's the wrong season for some of the ingredients. I'm very pleased with the book and the price is fantastic for what you get.

Soar to new applique heights on the wings of this amazing artist! *Following the outstanding success of her first album book, Bea has created a sequel filled with exquisite bird and flower patterns. *Familiar images unite in 35 applique blocks. Charming combinations include a cardinal sitting on a pine bough, an eastern bluebird on a holly branch, a black-capped chickadee with sunflowers, and a yellow warbler in a dogwood tree. *The best-known and most easily recognized backyard birds from across the country are showcased with Audobon-style quality. Fascinating information about each bird accompanies the patterns. *Each block features a colorful photograph, full-sized pattern, and tips for construction, fabric selection, and embroidered details. *BONUS PATTERN: A trumpet vine border with three different little hummingbirds adds the finishing touch to any quilt. AUTHORBIO: Before Bea started quilting in the mid 1980s, she was not familiar with quilting in any form. However, she had a background in home economics. She also studied weaving and oil and watercolor painting, and she earned a certificate from the Sogetsu School of flower arranging. After Bea started quilting, and especially doing applique, she discovered how the painting and flower-arranging media were interchangeable with quilting designs in color and form. REVIEW: Provides a focus on over thirty applique blocks filled with beautiful flower and bird patterns, gathered from American bird observations. Each block includes a colorful photo, full-sized pattern, and instrucions on how to duplicate the achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Representative Overview of New Deal Work Projects.......2004-05-02

President Franklin Roosevelt, confronted with the hardship of millions of unemployed Americans and radical political ideas blossoming around the world, put millions of unemployed Americans to work building bridges, roads, buildings and other elements of America's infrastructure. These fine work projects are seen across America and represent a hard period in American history, and a period of hope and achievement.

I found this H-Net review of this book on the Internet.

"Creating a Modern Tennessee through the New Deal
When most people think of the New Deal's impact on Tennessee, the concrete dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) are the image that comes to mind. However, like many states, Tennessee's public landscape was drastically affected in other ways by a variety of New Deal projects. In Tennessee's New Deal Landscape, Dr. Carroll Van West, project director for the Center for Historic Preservation, Middle Tennessee State University, examines over 250 of Tennessee's historic sites constructed during the New Deal and uses that information to catalogue how Depression-era federal government work changed the built environment of the state. West's book serves both as a heritage tourism guidebook and as a scholarly work. It also succeeds in illustrating how "New Deal agencies transformed the state's public landscape, leaving in their wake the infrastructure for the emergence of a modern--and different--Tennessee" (p. xii).

"Students of Tennessee's cultural landscapes and historic preservation will be familiar with West's earlier scholarship. Because of his work at the Center for Historic Preservation, West has either written about or is familiar with most of the New Deal historic properties in the state. His previous book, Tennessee's Historic Landscapes, is the definitive study on the different historic landscapes across the state. West's new contribution focuses exclusively on the historic properties that were constructed during the New Deal era in Tennessee. He has mined both primary and secondary sources on Tennessee's New Deal experience, including TVA records, the WPA guidebook on Tennessee, cultural resource reports, and National Register of Historic Properties nominations to produce a similarly authoritative examination of the state during the 1930s.

"In his first chapter, West presents a short thematic history of the New Deal, identifying the ten major New Deal agencies that worked in Tennessee. Unlike his previous book, which looked at the state's regions, he divides New Deal Landscapes into chapters based on the resource's property type. The next seven chapters include discussions of state offices and county courthouses; federal courthouses and post offices; community buildings and institutions; schools; housing; parks, memorials, and museums; and infrastructure. Each chapter contains a short narrative focusing on political, cultural, and social patterns that influenced the resources, as well as individual descriptions of other examples across the state, organized alphabetically by county. By not designating the properties as belonging to West, Middle, and East Tennessee, West makes his information accessible to those unfamiliar with Tennessee's traditional geographic divisions. A bibliographical essay also directs readers to important sources for further research.

"West makes it clear in his preface that the book is not comprehensive. The examples he uses are fairly divided between the rural and urban sections of the state. Many of the properties discussed in the chapters are representative and are not the only examples in the state. The identification and description of New Deal property types, however, is one of the book's strengths, making it easier for local historians to examine Depression-era landscape and distinguish significant buildings.

"The examples that West uses illustrate two interpretations of the New Deal in Tennessee: construction and destruction. Although many projects created new buildings, some, such as the TVA dams, also destroyed rural areas and displaced people from their traditional homes. Additionally, the construction of TVA lakes disrupted rural life, while also laying the groundwork for Tennessee's economic growth during World War II and the Cold War. This dichotomy shaped many Tennesseans' attitude toward the federal government both during and after the New Deal years.

"Although the book's only problems are cosmetic in nature, a few changes would have helped the reader. First, all of the pictures in the book are modern, but many readers would appreciate historic views of some of the buildings. Additionally, sidebars with brief descriptions of architectural elements or styles (for example, WPA Moderne style) would have made the book more accessible to laymen. Also, with the growing interest in environmental history, West's discussion of the creation of state parks and soil conservation only begs for more study.

"The study of New Deal landscape has bloomed during the 1990s. Many state historic preservation offices have developed New Deal theme studies to assist in placing 1930s properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Although these theme studies are helpful for historic preservation planning, they are not easily accessible to the public. Public historians should use West's book as an example on how better to communicate historic landscapes to the general public. The book takes "gray literature" and presents it in a manner that is useful. The framework that West has developed also lends itself to other possible historic themes, such as railroads, military, agriculture, industrial, and ethnic landscapes. This book should be read by public historians not only for the content but also for the methodology."

4 out of 5 stars Strategies and Encouragement to get the job done.......2003-05-07

In "Put Your House In Order" author Debbie Williams shares a Christian perspective on keeping an organized and functional house. This includes not only how to organize your clutter but also guidance on things like avoiding interruptions and learning to say "No". She picks very appropriate passages from the Bible and uses them as encouragement.

It is a small book but contains appropriate advice that is direct and to the point. There are larger and more thorough books on cleaning up your clutter and organizing your house but they generally do not include much in the way of words of encouragement. That is what makes this book different from similar ones.

Because she does discuss organizing time and tasks as well as clutter, I would have to say that there is one point she does not make that I have found very useful. She discusses using a to-do list and prioritizing that list, which is good. However, I have found that people often give up on such lists after a short while. One of the reasons people give up is because as they start to do their number one priority items people tend to do the ones they prefer to do first and the ones they really don't want to do are held off until last. So, as a reward for completing a task that you don't mind doing you get to do something that you like less. Often it is much more effective to do the things you don't really want to do first so that as you get one of them done you are rewarded with doing tasks that you like better.

Other than adding that point, the book was thorough and enjoyable and is especially recommended for someone who wants to organize their life but need that extra encouragement that this book provides.

Debbie's friendly and easy-to-understand guidance is both a welcomed relief for the "organizationally challenged," as well as a calming reminder that our everyday issues have Biblical direction, too. Debbie provides us with a plan to attack the clutter in our homes and, more importantly, the clutter in our minds, giving us a strategy to regain control of our lives, based on God's words.

The suggestions are practical and sensible, requiring only a willing spirit and a positive thought. Watch your productivity soar in every area of your life when you "put your house in order."

When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Victor Klemperer (1881-1960), honored as a frontline veteran of World War I, was a distinguished professor at the University of Dresden. A scant few months later he was merely a Jew, protected from deportation to a death camp only by his marriage to an Aryan. He suffered every other indignity to which German Jews were subjected, from losing his job to having his driver's license revoked to being denied permission to own a pet, and all are recorded with bitter clarity in his diary entries, which cover the years 1933 to 1941. (A second volume continuing through 1945 will be published in English in 1999.) The German edition of this book caused a sensation when it was published in 1995, and it's easy to see why: the relentless, quotidian nature of Nazi racism comes through forcefully in Klemperer's litany of daily humiliations and insults, a painful chronicle of situations in which readers can readily imagine themselves. Like Anne Frank, but with a more adult understanding of political fanaticism and human weakness, he makes the abstract horror of genocidal persecution very intimate, very personal, and very real. --Wendy Smith

                                              Book Description

The publication of Victor Klemperer's secret diaries brings to light one of the most extraordinary documents of the Nazi period. "In its cool, lucid style and power of observation," said The New York Times, "it is the best written, most evocative, most observant record of daily life in the Third Reich." I Will Bear Witness is a work of literature as well as a revelation of the day-by-day horror of the Nazi years.

A Dresden Jew, a veteran of World War I, a man of letters and historian of great sophistication, Klemperer recognized the danger of Hitler as early as 1933. His diaries, written in secrecy, provide a vivid account of everyday life in Hitler's Germany.

What makes this book so remarkable, aside from its literary distinction, is Klemperer's preoccupation with the thoughts and actions of ordinary Germans: Berger the greengrocer, who was given Klemperer's house ("anti-Hitlerist, but of course pleased at the good exchange"), the fishmonger, the baker, the much-visited dentist. All offer their thoughts and theories on the progress of the war: Will England hold out? Who listens to Goebbels? How much longer will it last?

This symphony of voices is ordered by the brilliant, grumbling Klemperer, struggling to complete his work on eighteenth-century France while documenting the ever- tightening Nazi grip. He loses first his professorship and then his car, his phone, his house, even his typewriter, and is forced to move into a Jews' House (the last step before the camps), put his cat to death (Jews may not own pets), and suffer countless other indignities.

Despite the danger his diaries would pose if discovered, Klemperer sees it as his duty to record events. "I continue to write," he notes in 1941 after a terrifying run-in with the police. "This is my heroics. I want to bear witness, precise witness, until the very end." When a neighbor remarks that, in his isolation, Klemperer will not be able to cover the main events of the war, he writes: "It's not the big things that are important, but the everyday life of tyranny, which may be forgotten. A thousand mosquito bites are worse than a blow on the head. I observe, I note, the mosquito bites."

This book covers the years from 1933 to 1941. Volume Two, from 1941 to 1945, will be published in 1999.

                                              5 out of 5 stars A must read memoir.......2007-07-08

This is a great memoir that any history buff or historian or anyone should read. It ranks right up there with Anne Frank's diary. It offers a unique view since Mr. Klemperer was married to a German woman during the Holocaust. It is this unique view on the Holocaust that makes this memoir so good.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Account of pre-WWII life in Germany.......2007-02-01

Victor Klemperer's diary of pre war Germany provides fascinating insight into what life was like for ordinary citizens in Germany. Interspersed with the mundane aspects of life, e.g., shopping, driving, going to the dentist, etc. are ever increasing examples of the insanity that was Nazi Germany. It was a little difficult to get into, but it soon became a page tuner. The later years are particularly interesting. I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for insight on Nazi Germany.......2007-01-10

This Diary was an excellent read for many reasons. It was a good primary source for information on Nazi Germany and at the same time was compelling and extremely interesting. The keeper of this diary was also a great author which makes this diary very easy to read as if it were a memoir. His story is great and it was extremely fun to see historical events through his eyes. Through his diary the reader has the ability to get a feel of what everyday people thought of the Nazis and what their true feelings were toward the National Socialist party. If you do not know a lot about German/Nazi history I would reccomend a refresher course somehow. I read this diary while taking a class on the topic of Nazi Germany and it was extremely interesting for me.

                                              5 out of 5 stars Harrowing reading.......2006-10-28

Anybody who wants to know what it was like to be a Jew under the Nazi regime should read this book and the second volume of Klemperer's diaries.
First the bestiality and the stupidity of the Nazis are shown with a simplicity and an absence of hatred that make them more disgusting. Then the courage, the resilience and the determination of this humble Professor are a lesson of courage, modesty and survival for all. One of the books that left upon me the most lasting impression, hesitating between the joy of the "happy end" and the depression about what I read. These two books should be made compulsory reading in any serious history studies...And no serious historian should avoid to read those two books.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful and uplifting account of life under the Nazis.......2006-10-10

I have read many books on the history of Europe and World War 2, but for the most part they cover the big picture - the major events and key participants. Victor Klemperer's diaries ("I Will Bear Witness") describe how people like himself were tossed about by the arbitrary power of the Nazis. This record of his personal experiences from 1933 to 1945 makes the history come vividly alive in all its horror and sadness.

Through the diaries we see the inexorable erosion of his rights (and the rights of all Jews) and the tyrannies of arbitrary power. Klemperer was forced to give up his car, he was forbidden to use the library, he could not have a phone, his typewriter was confiscated, and Jews had to hand in keys to their trunks.

Each day seemed to bring another "small" persecution, another wearing down of the spirit - except that Klemperer did not succumb, although he often despairs of surviving. He read almost every day and made notes on literary works he planned to write some day - if he survived. He bore witness by recording his actual experiences of tyranny.

Klemperer describes the exercise of raw power, cloaked in the trappings of Nazi law. Any official could do pretty much as he pleased with any Jew. It is almost impossible for those of us living in countries that respect the rule of law, and in which we can assert our rights, to truly feel the powerlessness, fear and humiliation that Klemperer felt almost every day under the Nazis. The Gestapo seem to select victims almost at random, but every persecution is handled with legal punctiliousness.

Reading the diaries today and knowing the history of Germany and the Jews, we are struck by the fact that Klemperer did not flee the country in good time like so many other Jews - and other members of his own family. But at the time, the future was unknown and there were always reasons for him to stay: Lack of money. He was almost 60 and would have felt reluctant, if not unable, to start a new life and earn money in another country. His wife was often sick and clung desperately to her new house. Our lives bind us to place. "Blut and Boden" (blood and soil) as the Nazis put it.

He was a reflective academic, unused until the war started to the rough and tumble of survival. Although the final entries in his diary after the bombing of Dresden show a remarkable feat of endurance in his and Eva's homeless wanderings to seek sanctuary.

The early part of the diary tells of his struggle to get a loan and to build a house. "Don't do it!" I cry silently. Don't you know a terrible war is coming and that the Jews will be rounded up? Don't you know you will be herded into a ghetto? Don't you know that Dresden will be fire-bombed (his new house is made of wood)?

But how could he know? We see the future as a continuation of the past. We cannot know for certain what events of today will have catastrophic consequences in the future. For Klemperer, things got slowly worse over time, each change bearable (if only just) - like boiling a frog. There was no sudden cataclysm that would have prompted even the most timid to flee - until too late.

Today we see small erosions of liberty, justified by the War on Terrorism: secret monitoring of the phone calls of "suspects" is OK, the Geneva Convention does not apply to Guantanamo Bay and "coercion" of prisoners is not torture. The end justifies the means, we are told - although not in such truthful terms. We think that none of these arbitrary exercises of power apply to us. But where will they lead? We do not know. But the experiences of Klemperer under the Nazis show where they have led in the past.

The diary is essentially as Klemperer wrote it - there has been no post facto editing to make it more literary or historically apt. The result is powerful and horrifying to the reader who is like some Olympian God watching Klemperer struggle, knowing the trials to come and the futility of his struggles.

His hopes, fears and vulnerabilities are laid before us, without any editing to remove the embarrassing entries - or other entries that lesser writers would have preferred not to see the light of day, such as his furtive theft of a spoonful of jam in the Jews House in Dresden. This honesty makes the diaries such a powerful and compelling statement.

But despite the ever-present threat of arrest and "evacuation" to Poland, from which no one ever returns and about which only the sketchiest rumours are known, Klemperer finds courage to enjoy the new flowers of spring, the beauty of fresh snow on tree branches, and the pleasures of visiting his friends and fellow victims.

One of the most poignant entries in the diary is for August 1, 1943. He had received an order to come to Gestapo HQ for "questioning". By that stage of the war, virtually no Jew returned from such questioning. Their families were notified that the person was deported and "shot while trying to escape". Some "committed suicide" in the cells before then. With the words "Perhaps this is my last entry", Klemperer records his feelings and his love for his wife Eva.

Every thinking person who is worried about the state of the world today should read this book. In the struggle against terrorism we see governments in liberal democracies encroaching on our liberties, condoning torture, telling lies - all in the name of a greater good, the War on Terror. This is no different in principle to the way Nazis, and all other totalitarian regimes, justified their actions and sought to hide the truth. The propaganda is exactly the same.

Of course the liberal democracies are unlikely to round up people suspected as enemies, put them in concentration camps and torture them - or are they?

We must never take our liberties for granted, nor accept that the end (in the war on terror) justifies the means. Klemperer's diaries are a powerful reminder of where that can lead.
