so many books out there focus on the person with alzheimers and very few address the caregiver adequately. My ailing mother is caring for my father and her inability to do a good job was fodder for all sorts of of emotional issues - she needed more than a small chapter in the back of a book. This book was wonderful and validated all her feelings and let her know she was not alone. Too bad it's so difficult to find. It has a question and answer format with questions like "I feel so bad when I yell at him for not remembering. I know he's sick but I just get so frustrated! What can I do?". Practical, useful, and true to life.

Coping with Alzheimer's is a very practical survival guide for caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's. It is very well written and easily readable, not preachy or "textbooky." Highly recommended.
Focus on what CAN be controlled : the caregiver's thoughts.......2000-09-05
This is a remarkable and extremely useful book for all caregivers and family members of Alzheimer's and Dementia patients. It utilizes principles of "RET" or Rational Emotive Therapy pioneered by Dr. Albert Ellis. Simply put, the concept holds that one's perception of events will determine the corresponding feeling or emotion. A deceptively simple but powerful concept in battling depression, anger, and frustration. In the case of Alzheimer's caregivers, this premise can be a literal lifesaver and Drs. Oliver and Bock use their own case histories of treating caregivers to demonstrate pratical, powerful "inner dialogues" that can be used when the daily stress and frustrations of dealing with this challenging condition come to bear. Specific chapters are devoted to: Shame,Guilt, Anger, Depression, and even Self-Pity. This book not only provides the means to lift the spirits and emotions of caregivers, but by doing so, potentially change for the better the necessary interactions between them and their stricken loved-one. Highly recommended!

A Taste, and Glimpse, of Heaven!.......2004-11-13
Although this book is now 12 years old, it's recipes are still cutting edge for many, as he, Alan Wong, Sam Choy and Roy Yamaguchi have created and are still creating, luscious food from the incredible fish and fresh vegetables available on Hawaii and in many mainland grocery stores.
His photographs of presentation are eye-candy, inspirational and reflect simple to elegant food styling presentations quite doable for many home chefs of moderate talents.
It's one thing to improvise, from his recipes when I do not have Opah (moonfish), or fresh mahi mahi, living on the mainland as I do, and still enjoy the recipe...It's another thing to visit one of his restaurants as I just did, "A Pacific Cafe" on Kauai, order the tasting menu, and actually watch him meticulously prepare, plate and quickly serve (on warmed plates) breathtakingly delicious crisp, fresh and perfectly cooked and spiced foods, with delicate sauces complementing, rather than overpowering the main item.
So what's the difference between then, when this book was published, and now? Well, judging only from one night a week ago, looking at my and other raving patron's plates, Chef Josselin has a greater use of decorations and sauces, conveniently dispensed from squeeze bottles for precise patterns of visual delight, with tastes or subtle accents that complement the main item, much as other fine chefs currently choose to enhance their presentations. I expect (hopefully) his next book reflects these contributions, as well as having many newer recipes from the last decade.
These are recipes for a chef with generally moderate skills, willing to happily substitute, as many chefs do, one fish or vegetable for another (and he has already made substitute suggestions already!) in those few recipes that have unusual ingredients. When there's unusual cooking styles ( such as cooking in an "imu"- an underground lava rock lined oven), he offers a simpler way to cook the item in a home oven, using banana leaves or tinfoil.
These are recipes for wonderful tasting and appearing food, with an exotic Hawaiian-French touch.
This is a book reflecting a slice in time of an artistic and multitalented chef, whose recipes, and presentations, are both priceless and timeless.
Fantastic food.......2001-12-26
I just ate at Josselin's restaturant at Ceasar's in Las Vegas, 808 (Hawaii's area code). It bills itself as a Hawaiian/French fusion restaurant. It was the best food I've ever had. I did not realize that I had his cookbook until I went to the restaurant. The huli-huli chicken is great, as is the pineapple-maccadamia nut rice. The only problem with the book is that many of the ingredients are difficult/impossible to find outside of Hawaii.
A Pacific Café Maui revisited..........2001-12-02
When I lived in Maui, this was my favorite restaurant (A Pacific Café, on South Kihei Road, in Kihei.) This stunning cookbook, leaves me longing to be back, just so I can dine their once again.
Perhaps when I get a bigger apartment, I may try some of these adventurous recipes. Jean Marie Josselin is one of the founders of this kind of cuisine. Classically trained as a French chef, he was one of the first pioneers of "Hawaiian Regional Cuisine". He moved to Kauai and opened his first restaurant there. He used the fresh ingredients that the island provided. When he opened his first restaurant in Maui, it was an experience just to dine there. The architecture of the inside of the restaurant was rumored to cost around $250k. After a hot day out in the sun, you'd come in and sit at the bar, for a glass of wine and an appetizer while waiting for a table (since you were foolish and didn't make reservations.) The service was so good at the bar, that you decided to stay there and watch the surroundings. Across from the bar, was the line. The appetizers were being prepared, followed by the two or three chefs working on the main courses followed by the person making desserts.
Occasionally, you'd see Arnold Schwarrzennegger and his wife come in, or Helen Hunt, and maybe Dustin Hoffman would sit next to you at the bar. The food was so good, he knew you wouldn't talk to him because you'd be eating the entire time.
All of these memories come back, when flipping through this recipe book... Since I'm not in Maui anymore, I'll just have to settle for Roy's or Kaspars'. (Not a bad thing, just not quite Jean Marie's & George Gomes' masterpieces...)
fantastic foods.......1999-06-30
Jean-Marie has created a comprehensive guide to better eating. His creations aren't for the faint of heart in the kitchen, but if you have the patience, it pays beautifully. I have always been more of a "presentation person" and found his recipies were easy to dress and enjoy equally.

I enjoyed this book immensely. One of the best cookbooks I have used. The multi-ethnic recipes were great. I have used many of these recipes when entertaining business clients in my home. Makes me want to visit one of his restaurants. When will he be publishing another book?

Used this every day of our trip.......2007-07-26
We used this book every day we were in Yellowstone. It was such a help in planning each day, knowing where to stop, what to expect in terms of how long hikes were, finding restaurants and shops, etc. I would read the information about each place aloud to the kids, which helped pass the time between stops. One word of caution, though. We are not the type of family that does a lot of hiking, camping, climbing, etc. We did find that some of her descriptions of the difficulty of the hikes and trails were a bit underestimated. Between the heat and the altitude, this is important to keep in mind! Other than that, I think this is a must have!

Intimate & Excellent.......2007-05-29
This second edition adds two new drives, and updated information from the 1999 edition.
Most surprising, for a guidebook, is the intimacy of tone, and enthusiasm for the parks and the beauty of the surrounding areas.
This book contains substantial, and well researched information on the historical, geological and natural features of the parks, and the tone is that of a close and intimate friend, sitting in your passenger seat, pointing out the window and exclaiming, "Hey! Look at that!"
Far from the staid and removed tone of many guidebooks, this book is truly an "Insiders' Guide," and makes me want to check out the other books in the series.
OK for Main Roads.......2007-05-25
This book is OK for the main roads in Yellowstone and the Tetons. I had hoped for more of the "off the main track" roads. You can get most of the info here from free brochures and park literature. But it is well written and fairly complete. If you just want to travel the Grand Loop with all the other tourists, it will guide you. If you want to find a little wilderness, you need to find another guide to driving the back roads (or just get the hiking books and save the gas!)
Best for those who plan to see the parks by vehicle.......2007-01-13
For those interested in viewing the parks and surrounding areas by vehicle, this book is a good resource. The book lists 28 different driving tours in and around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National parks. Each tour provides a general description along with driving time, attractions, and points of interest.
Does a nice job of breaking down the drives between points of interest inside the parks.
Thorough coverage of the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area....but, unless if you're someone who plans to do a lot of driving tours, I'm not sure that you couldn't find the same information on the Internet.

Missing a clear final objective.......2007-05-15
This book is in fact a series of tips and/or techniques but the reader will never see where the author tends to drive him. Each article starts with a very small (and partial) picture of the target but at the end of the explanations, no review of the final result. No global project as it was supposed at the very begin of the book. That's a pity.
The comments, in other hand, is sometimes missing details and precisions.
This book did not give me any confidence to try any of the explained techniques.
A Very Good Introduction.......2006-12-05
There are two main approaches to model RR scenery. One is to rely on commercial systems and the other is to make things from scratch. While this might be intuitive for something like a model of a barn, it is much less so for the modeling the white water of a mill stream or the detritus of a forest floor. This book looks at both approaches, but does not do so from the perspective of either/or. Instead a situation is postulated and then the author explains how he would handle the situation. Sometimes this means mixing chemicals and installing commercial products and sometimes this means going out and getting a bunch of dead leaves to put in a blender. The approaches are mixed together and the result is an easy to read and easy to understand explanation that can be extrapolated for many situations.
The book is well illustrated and the actual construction steps are presented step by step. It is easy to follow.
I tend to distrust the natural approach, fearing that in time, organic matter will decay. I am less distrustful of it now and have some new ideas to try.
Scenery for anyone.......2006-03-19
The simple step by step in this book covers just what we needed for all aspects of our 4x8' layout. We have been constructing it based on articles in Model Railroader magazine but there was not enough detail for ground, roads etc. This book has absolutely fabulous methods with easy to follow instructions and the results are fabulous. I never thought my son and I could achieve the kinds of realism that we constantly see displyed in magazines but with this book we are! And it is very easy to do.
The author's systems are very well documented and use inexpensive materials when ever possible.

The projects outlined in this book not only offer the reader step-by-step instructions, but will also encourage the modeler to branch out on his/her own. I highly recommend it.
Great book, don't be fooled by the title.......2004-02-13
While the title say "Basic Scenery", it's not about the difficult level, but basic scenery that's needed in every model railroad. The book is divided in several projects (two to four pages), with color photos to illustrate the techniques presented and tips on small details.
It's a book for modellers at all levels, but it is certain that intermediate and begginers can get the most from this book. To guarantee that, projects are well described on a very didactic language. I recommend the book for everyone planning the first or next railroad empire, even if it's a small one!

I got this book because I have slumber parties a lot. Well Its fun, but a lot of the quizzes are the same and it gets old after a while. Once you have taken the quiz and all your friends have too it's pointless. We got bored with it really easy.

I had endless fun with this funny, informative book. My friends and I love to give the quizzes to each other. The authors are really in touch with what goes on in the life of a teenage girl. My favorite quizzes were "PDAs- How Much is Too Much?" and "Do you always fall for bad boys?" Can't wait for the next edition!!! Good Times!
