Reminiscences set in the context of a turbulent world.......2001-02-05
A wonderfully accessible and often amusing account of Roy Redgrave's family and military career set in the context of a world engulfed in warfare and intrigue. His background is as complicated and interesting as one might expect from a member of the Redgrave clan and his anecdotes provide the reader with an insight into a career filled with incident. Thoroughly recommended!

B. Blues is a portal for the American house of information........1999-07-06
The television media is a kind of window on the American house of information. It is an obscure window made of stained glass which one has to crawl up close to and press their face against in order to see anything outside. Still a man's view is obscured. The only thing one really looks at is the t.v. itself, to admire the stained glass window. Newspaper media is a sort of Bay window offering a wide clear view of the landscape and looking out in several directions depending on the newspaper. The radio, the disembodied voice, a skylight. BALKAN BLUES on the other hand is a book functioning as a portal. Rather than looking out of the American house it invites its visitors, the various authors of its stories, to enter and entreats us to understand something about who they are and appeals to the complexity of the places they live. Places outside our own house.

Book Description
1831. Abu Abdallah Mohammed ben Musa, of Khowarezm, who it appears, from his preface, wrote this Treatise at the command of the Caliph Al Mamun, was for a long time considered as the original inventor of Algebra. That he was not the inventor of the Art, is now well established, but that he was the first Mohammedan who wrote upon it, is to be found asserted in several Oriental writers. He was also the first Mussulman who had ever written on the solution of problems by the rules of completion and reduction.

The spiritual power of yogafrom the ten million-copy bestselling author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success
In recent years, yoga has exploded in popularity. Yet for most North Americans, yoga remains just another exercise routinea good option if you want to increase flexibility or relieve stress. According to Deepak Chopra and David Simon, however, this simplistic view ignores the spiritual side of yogaits profound power to unite body, mind, and spirit and bring about enlightenment. Now, in this new book, they show how everyone can explore yoga's spiritual dimensionand integrate all the layers of their lives.
Yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, and the authors begin by exploring the eight traditional yoga branchesthe entry points to this union. The branches address such things as behavior, attention, awareness, the senses, and energy, and only one of them, asana, corresponds to the "positions" or poses people typically associate with yoga. Chopra and Simon then show people how to understand the seven spiritual laws that govern naturePure Potentiality, Giving, Karma, Least Effort, Intention and Desire, Detachment, and Dharmaand how to integrate these laws into their daily lives using meditation, breathing, asana, and other yoga practices. Complete with more than 50 photographs illustrating yoga poses, this new Chopra blockbuster is essential for anyone who wants to embrace yoga's spiritual potentialand lead a happier, more abundant, more harmonious life.
Deepak Chopra, MD (San Diego, CA), is one of the bestselling authors of the last 15 years. His New York Times bestselling books include The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, which has sold more than ten million copies, How to Know God, Perfect Health, and The Path to Love. He has been interviewed widely on programs such as Oprah, Larry King Live and Good Morning America (for The Chopra Center Cookbook, 047145404-4) and featured on the cover of Time. David Simon, MD (San Diego, CA), is the Medical Director of the Chopra Center and the author of Vital Energy (0-471-39859-4) and Return to Wholeness (0-471-34964-X).
Customer Reviews:
Chopra simplifies yoga.......2007-04-12
As with each of Chopra's books that I have read, his thoughts are extremely helpful at taking things and making them seem reasonable and simple. If you are already practicing yoga or thinking of starting, you need this book. Another book he wrote-"The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" is probably the best book you could ever put to use. I'm not a "new age" or "self-help" kind of guy but this dude is cool!
A Book of Many Insights.......2007-01-20
I chose this book because I was looking for help in returning to my practice of yoga. Deepak Chopra books always provided words of guidance. He did not fail in this attempt. He begins the book with insightful questions to help you find the real "you" and then progresses to explain the different types of yoga practices. But the real value in the book is the section discussing the Seven Spirtual Laws. For me, that alone was worth buying the book.
After many years of practicing yoga I now understand the importance of not forcing the body to obey moves but it is in allowing the inner Self to assist in all of the movements. There is a wonderful section on yoga positions with excellent photos and descriptions of how to attain the pose. Chopra also discusses meditation, how to practice it and methods for success.
This is a book I keep in my workout area and read each day before I begin my sessions. It is not only physically helpful, it is a spiritual inspiration.
Change of Life Book.......2006-11-06
Dr. Chopra's book is a very uplifting yet calming way to study the spirituality side of yoga. While the poses are not difficult, the incorporation of the 7 laws gives a whole new meaning to the asanas.
This book has taught me the importance of meditation in my yoga practice.
I think it's a great book for newcomers as well as experienced yogis.
Namaste!
Great Book.......2006-09-09
This book is a indispensible daily guide that helps readers implement the spiritual benefits of yoga--both on and off the mat. Chopra and Simon's simple yet descriptive language allows for complete comprehension of the philosophy, meditation, bandhas and practices of yoga. I especially like the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga (which fall under Philosophy) and refer to and implement them on a daily basis. As a new student of yoga, this book has greatly helped my approach to and understanding of my daily practices.
wonderful!.......2004-06-26
If you love yoga then you'll love this book! There's so much more to yoga than the physical postures that we have come to know. Yoga is a beautiful study, one that can really help deepen any spiritual practice. This book explains so much. I really enjoyed it, and will read it over and over again!

Fancy and Fabulous.......2005-03-13
I agree with all who raved over this book. I originally bought it for my mother and loved it myself so I wound up getting a 2nd copy for me as well. Every recipe and technigue described is clear and easy to follow. Even seasoned cooks, like my mother, carry this one around like a bible.
Simply (and deliciously) wonderful..........2003-12-26
I cannot understand in the least why this fabulous book is out of print. If my house were burning down and I could only rescue one book--cookbook or otherwise--this would be it. Simply reading the book was as enjoyable as reading a novel; I just couldn't put it down. It brought to mind a time when food tasted better; in stark contrast to today's dull and insipid microwaved swill.
"Fancy Pantry" has something for everyone--whether you prefer the homey or the gourmet, the sweet, the savory, or the spicy--you won't be disappointed. From the Devil's Own Peanuts (I used almonds) to Mushroom Stock, to making your own candied ginger, this book cannot fail to please. The Sugar and Spiced Nuts were an absolute hit and I cannot wait to try the recipe for making Chinese frying oil which combines ginger, garlic, and scallion. My mouth waters as I anticipate making Nesselrode Pudding in all Witty's wonderful variations.
Thanks to this book, I won't have to shop for presents anymore. As it is, I have people constantly asking for the recipes--and I am shameless enough to take all the credit. ;-)
God bless Helen Witty.
A reprint of this is a MUST!.......2000-01-26
If I could have one cookbook back after our house burned down, this would be it. The Melon Moons recipe was our all time favorite pickle. We used most of the cherry recipes to preserve the abundance from our trees. The unique and exquisite recipes and precise directions make this the best book on canning, preserving, as well as endless other condiments, pate`s and wonderful things for the pantry that ever existed.
Far too good to be out of print.......2000-01-05
This is an absolutely terrific book for Christmas-time cooking. A fruitcake recipe that makes fruitcake-haters ask for seconds, plus beautiful and delicious nibbles and sauces. Unusual items that are fun to make and make great gifts too.
This is the best perserving book in or out of print........1999-04-03
I figure if I find one really outstanding recipe in a book it has paid for itself. This book, and the revised Good Stuff, has recipe after recipe that are really flavorful and preserved safely. Many preserving books from the US and abroad do not follow approved methods, or have no preserving directions. Helen Witty does. The Red Pepper Jam-with red bell peppers and jalapenos is stellar. I make cases of it every year. There's such a variety and number of recipes; you can use it for years.

Customer Reviews:
Know your sharks.......2001-10-29
If you ask the average person to name as many sharks as they can, they might come up with about 15. This book has a lot more. It has an entry for every shark that can be found off the shores of North America, and because sharks are wide ranging animals, this means most of the sharks in the world. Castro, a scientist for the National Marine Fisheries Department, starts off with a very well done introduction to sharks in general. Then there is a dichotomous key to family and to species for all species covered. The write up on each species has a line drawing in profile and of the teeth. Aside from ID information there is a plethora of useful biological info that is hard to find in any one source for all species. This includes litter size, pup size and frequently age and size at maturity. If you have an interest in the natural history of marine animals, this book is a must have.
Both a field guide and a natural history reference.......1999-10-11
I found this to be an excellent reference book. It is an easy read and presents taxonomic information in a way that everyone can grasp. Information provided for each shark species includes facts about the species biology and relation to man - information most field guides gloss over. As a marine biologist, I have found this book invauable.
An excellent book for anyone who is serious about sharks.......1999-08-22
If you love your sharks, this is the book you need to get. It has a well-written introduction, a very nice classification system to help you identify that shark you saw last week while diving, and in-depth descriptions of just about every shark prevalent in these waters. I would have liked to see more color photos of the sharks, but that's just picking at nits. This book will be a well-read part of your reference library for years to come.

Customer Reviews:
The Most Uninspiring Book in My Library.......2007-03-01
I am relatively new at altered art, so I thought this book would be a good one for me. Sadly, I am grossly disappointed. How ugly the majority of the projects are! Many of them look like an elementary school child would have no problem completing them. The projects in this book were just not anything I would qualify as "Art." I only gave it two stars for the nice photography.
Disappointed, sort of.......2006-07-15
I love the quality of the pictures of the final projects and the overal quality of the book presentation. However, I did not like the "refer to page [x]" for the step-by-step techniques in each project and the pictures of the steps did not help much. Every technique is not the same from project to project. It seemed a lazy approach to the book layout. Other than that is was OK.
Altered Art for the First Time.......2006-06-12
An excellent offering for artists of all levels, Madeline Arendt opens your eyes to new and easy ways of creating keepsakes that will become family heirlooms. Her directions are simple to follow, and she gives the reader permission to take the project and "jump off the page." A great addition to any artist's library!
From expert to novice there is something here for everyone!.......2005-11-14
If you are new to the altered art craze or an old hand you will find inspiration and great advice in this book. The projects are well thought out, delightfully original and inspiring. Learn a variety of techniques easily with step by step photography or just gaze at the artistry to stir your own creative juices. This book is a must have for anyone working with paper, fabrics, paints, or inks.

Book Description
Americans today have rediscovered a need for safety and belonging. Pastoral counselor Lois Kellerman, many of whose clients' weddings have been covered in The New York Times "Vows" column, has helped hundreds of couples find (or regain) a sense of "home" in their partnership. Marriage from the Heart is her compelling and sensitive blueprint-for readers of all ages, backgrounds, beliefs, and stages of marriage-for building a spiritually fulfilling relationship. At its center are eight commitments, both daily and lifelong, that build a lasting marriage and fortify it against everything from betrayal to "dry spells" to fiscal hard times:
* Centering-the home as a sanctuary
* Choosing-wise decision making
* Honoring-deep, mutual respect
* Caring-nurturing each other
* Abiding-resiliency through life's ups and downs
* Repairing-mending what's broken
* Listening-open communication
* Celebrating-enjoying your marriage
Beautifully designed, Marriage from the Heart is a perfect wedding or anniversary gift. Based on a fourteen-year study of core life values, the book is filled with touching anecdotes, words of encouragement and here-and-now exercises. It offers spiritual guidance that transcends religion and speaks to every season in the life of a marriage.
Customer Reviews:
Oops..........2006-11-28
I wish I had known more about this book and the author before I bought it. I was looking for subject matter for our Bible Study, and the reviews were encouraging. However, I did not know that this book was written from the perspective of a transcendentalist. The content IS good, but it does not have the Biblical backing in content that I had been hoping for. This book will still be useful, but it's going to take some work on our part to make sure the points are Biblically sound.
Wisdom from the Heart.......2002-12-04
Marriage from the Heart is one of those books that doesn't come along often enough. The text is chock full of words of wisdom to share with friends and loved ones from authors who have obviously learned the truths contained therein from the trenches. This book does not belong on a dust collecting bookshelf, but on the nightstand or on the coffee table to be referred to frequently, by couples young and old, sharing relationships fresh and tarnished. Marriage from the Heart breaths new life into the self-help genre with its weaving of life experience with a good dose of philosophy and psychology, a dash of theological insight, and a splash of humor towards life's challenges, making it a perfect recipe for an open, honest, and lasting relationship.
Strengthening.......2002-09-21
I like how this book applies itself more towards strengthening an existing relationship rather than fixing a broken one (although the techniques presented are applicable to both situations). In fact, the content of this book could easily be applied to non-romantic relationships as well. The authors style and liberal use of applicable anecdotes yields an easy and enjoyable read. I will be sending copies to both of my sisters.
Inspiring, encouraging, helpful book.......2002-09-09
I was delighted with this book's uplifting and practical messages, as well as with the lovely prose. I have little pieces of yelllow sticky notes poking out of the book at places where I want to be able to find again certain poetic, well-turned phrases. Anyone who wants to become a better loving partner can find inspiration and concrete ideas in the well-organized, concise sections, stories that illustrate each section, and "questions to ask yourself" at each section's end. As a therapist, I see multiple ways to use the information in this book to help couples create more mutually satisfying relationships.
A Book to Re-read Many Times.......2002-05-31
I'm glad I bought this book in hardback, because I plan to read it again whenever I feel the need for a "relationship tune-up." The beautifully crafted prose makes reading "Marriage From the Heart" a pleasure, while stories straight from the heart illustrate the authors' points and personalize the lessons within the eight commitments. I have already purchased a copy to give to a newly-wed couple, but this is also a book that has something for couples at any stage of a relationship.

Book Description
On April 28, 1858, municipal officials announced the winner of the design contest for a great new park for the people of New York City-Plan no. 33, "Greensward" by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Though the appropriated ground for what was to become Central Park was nothing more than a barren expanse occupied by squatters, in a matter of a few years, Olmsted turned the wasteland into a landscape of coherence, elegance, and beauty. It not only surpassed the design ingenuity of its existing European counterparts but gained the designer national acclaim in a profession that still lacked a name.
Olmsted was an American visionary. He foresaw the day when New York and many other growing cities of the mid-nineteenth century would be plagued by what we presently term "urban sprawl." And he was convinced of the critical importance of adapting land for the recreational and contemplative needs of city dwellers before the last remnants of natural terrain were engulfed by "monotonous, straight streets and piles of erect, angular buildings." As a result of his early efforts to revolutionize the design of public parks, many cities today are able to preserve the recreational space and greenery within their urban limits. In addition, his thoughts and words on wilderness areas still echo across a century of preservation in the wild.
This lively and insightful account of his prodigious life features many of his outstanding landscape projects, including the Biltmore Estate, Prospect Park (Brooklyn), the capitol grounds in Washington, DC, the Boston Park System, the Chicago parks and the Chicago World Fair, as well as measures to preserve the natural settings at Niagara Falls, Yosemite, and the Adirondacks. It traces his early years and describes events that were to form his artistic, intellectual, and deeply humanistic sensibilities. And it restores this lost American hero to his prominent place in history. In addition to being the acknowledged father of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted helped shape the political and philosophical climate of America in his own time and today.
Book Description
As she did with Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis here retrieves individual lives from historical obscurity to give us a window onto the early modern world. As women living in the seventeenth century, Glikl bas Judah Leib, Marie de l'Incarnation, and Maria Sibylla Merian, equally remarkable though very different, were not queens or noblewomen, their every move publicly noted. Rather, they were living "on the margins" in seventeenth-century Europe, North America, and South America. Yet these women--one Jewish, one Catholic, one Protestant--left behind memoirs and writings that make for a spellbinding tale and that, in Davis' deft narrative, tell us more about the life of early modern Europe than many an official history.
All these women were originally city folk. Glikl bas Judah Leib was a merchant of Hamburg and Metz whose Yiddish autobiography blends folktales with anecdotes about her two marriages, her twelve children, and her business. Marie de l'Incarnation, widowed young, became a mystic visionary among the Ursuline sisters and cofounder of the first Christian school for Amerindian women in North America. Her letters are a rich source of information about the Huron, Algonquin, Montagnais, and Iroquois peoples of Quebec. Maria Sibylla Merian, a German painter and naturalist, produced an innovative work on tropical insects based on lore she gathered from the Carib, Arawak, and African women of Suriname. Along the way she abandoned her husband to join a radical Protestant sect in the Netherlands. Drawing on Glikl's memoirs, Marie's autobiography and correspondence, and Maria's writings on entomology and botany, Davis brings these women to vibrant life. She reconstructs the divergent paths their stories took, and at the same time shows us each amid the common challenges and influences of the time--childrearing, religion, an outpouring of vernacular literature--and in relation to men.
The resulting triptych suggests the range of experience, self-consciousness, and expression possible in seventeenth-century Europe and its outposts. It also shows how persons removed from the centers of power and learning ventured in novel directions, modifying in their own way Europe's troubled and ambivalent relations with other "marginal" peoples.

Three fascinating lives.......2001-08-18
Davis takes the reader deep into the lives of three quite different European women of the 1600s, showing how they courageously face family and career challenges. Each story is amazing. Catholic widow Marie Guyart goes to the wilderness of Canada to help found the Quebec branch of the Ursuline teaching order. Jewish mother of 14 children, Glikl von Hameln is a successful business woman, both as her husband's chief assistant and as a widow. Divorced Protestant Maria Merian supports herself and her daughters through her engravings based on her own ecological observations of caterpillars native to Europe and northern South America. I particularly enjoyed learning about Merian because I have been impressed by her elegant work which I have seen in a number of museums including the National Museum of Woman in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
