Book Description
Charles Stewart’s life of sailing and combat on the high seas rivals that of Patrick O’Brien’s fictional hero, Jack Aubrey. Stewart held more sea commands (11) than any other U.S. Navy captain and served longer (63 years) than any officer in American naval history. He commanded every type of warship, from sloop to ship-of-the-line, and served every president from John Adams to Abraham Lincoln.
Born in Philadelphia during the American Revolution, Stewart met President Washington and went to sea as a cabin boy on a merchantman before age thirteen. In March 1798, at age nineteen, he received a naval commission one month before the Department of the Navy was established. Stewart went on to an illustrious naval career: Thomas Jefferson recognized his Mediterranean exploits during the Barbary Wars, Stewart advised James Madison at the outset of the War of 1812, and Stewart trained many future senior naval officers—including David Porter, David Dixon Porter, and David G. Farragut—in three wars. He served as a pallbearer at President Lincoln’s funeral.
Stewart cemented his reputation as commander of the Navy’s most powerful frigate, the USS Constitution. No other captain commanded this ship for a longer wartime period or through more naval engagements. Undefeated in battle, including defeating the British warships Cyane and Levant simultaneously, both ship and captain came to be known as “Old Ironsides.”

The Story of a Fascinating man........2007-02-14
Carefully researched and written by two Naval officers, this book is a biography of one man, Charles Stewart, but it tells you almost as much about the Navy as it existed in the early years of our country.
Stewart served in the navy for sixty-three years, from age 19 to 83. He commanded eleven United States Navy ships, more than any other person.
There have been three ships in the navy named for Capt. Stewart. The first USS Stewart (DD-13) was a Bainbridge-class destroyer which served from 1902 until 1919.
The second USS Stewart (DD-224) was a Clemson-class destroyer which was commissioned in 1920. In early 1942 she was damaged by an Japanese air attack. She was further damaged while in dry dock for repairs. Demolition charges were then set off inside the ship and she was hit by another Japanese bomb. She and the drydock sank. The Japanese Navy raised her, repaired her and renamed her Patrol Boat No. 102. She served through the rest of the war, and re-entered the US Navy after the war, at which time there were two USS Stewarts in the Navy. DD-224 was later used as a target ship for aircraft and was sunk in 1946.
The third Stewart (DE-238) was an Edsall-class destroyer escort that served from 1943 to 1947 - She later became a museum ship and was in Galveston, Texas, where she still may be.
But back to the book. These authors have written this book so well that it almost reads like a novel. The thing to keep in mind, however, is that this story is true.
Review.......2007-02-04
Fair, somewhat interesting but rather dull. Not well written, reads like it was patched together, same information restated numerous times.
"A Call to the Sea" is a Good Read.......2006-05-08
I finally read this book that had been a Christmas present from my son. I was hesitant to read something marketed as a "real life Jack Aubrey" since I'm a fan of that series, but I was pleasantly surprised that it lived up to the book jacket.
I found three minor faults with the work. First, as another reviewer mentioned, there were a few name/date inaccuracies; for example, in a discussion of the gunboat battle of the Barbary War, the book has 1803 instead of 1804. There were a few occasions in the book when the authors actually discuss various sources and their merits and they actually argue through why some sources and dates don't seem right. That leads me to believe it was either minor oversights or a failure in editing. Second, the authors overused the term "old schoolyard friends" when referring to Stewart, Decatur or Somers. Once or twice would have sufficed. Third, in the narratives about Stewart's facing off against two British fleets (Warren's and Collier's), it would have been helpful to have researched and explored the British perspectives more.
That said, I thought this was a very strong biography in a traditional sense. As a retired Navy officer, I also found it refreshing for a naval biography to be written by two naval officers. They used extensive primary sources and they tell a great story. I had only barely heard of Stewart before reading this, but he led an incredible life. I was familiar with the Barbary Wars and War of 1812, but their telling of his time in the Pacific was entirely new to me - in fact I have not seen it told elsewhere except tangentially by Nathaniel Philbrick in "the Tale of the Whaleship Essex" - and the problems Stewart had with a State Department agent and his wife were almost hilarious had they not been so bad.
If you want to read about the first six decades of the U.S. Navy told through the eyes of one officer's career, this book is it.
Delia Tudor Parnell (Nee Stewart) & Charles Stewart.......2006-04-28
Delia Tudor Parnell, nee Stewart, did not die in 1892 or in Bordentown, New Jersey at Montpelier. She died at Avondale, Wicklow, Ireland (the Parnell home) in 1898 in a terrible accident; her dress caught fire and she died an extremely painful death.
Charles Stewart, son of Admiral Charles Stewart, did not die in Paris in 1874. He died in Rome, Italy in 1872.
These factual discrepencies do not give me much comfort that this biography is trustworthy.
Reads Like A Hornblower Novel- But It's True.......2006-03-29
This book reads like an age of sail novel- but it's all true. It's a very informative and very exciting biography. You'll also learn alot about early U.S. Naval history. It amazes me that we have known so little about Charles Stewart!! The auhors have done a great job. I agree with the other Amazon reviewers- you won't be able to put this one down. Extraordinary!!

Book Description
Now you can enjoy your favorite recipes with creative alternatives to gluten, dairy, eggs, and sugar.
Does wheat sensitivity keep you from eating hearty breads? Or lactose intolerance mean the end of ice cream? Not anymore! Nutrition expert Carol Fenster has spent years developing recipes free of the food allergens that wreak havoc on your health, but full of the flavors you love.
Because so many of the 6 to 7 million Americans with food allergies have sensitivities to more than just one food, Fenster has created dishes that remove five of the most common allergens-gluten, dairy, eggs, and sugar-providing one book full of delicious recipes for you and your entire family, no matter what your individual dietary needs.
Complete with tips on cooking without traditional ingredients and conversion tables that will show you how to substitute alternative ingredients in your own recipes, this book can help keep you healthy while allowing you to indulge in delectable breads, entrées, and desserts.
Customer Reviews:
Fenster provides some recipes.......2007-08-26
When a cookbook claims that it eliminates a number of different allergens, I do not expect that all of those allergens will be eliminated from each and every recipe. Some recipes in Fenster's book do manage to be free from all four of her "allergic foods". For other recipes, the reader can quickly see which items are eliminated by scanning the key at the beginning of the page. I also found acceptable substitutions for many items. Those of us who are sensitive to more than a few foods will have to be creative; I have not yet found a book that fully meets my needs. However, Cooking Free is one of the best.
Great!.......2007-06-27
I specially liked the hints on the flours, as the % to use of each of them. They were really usefull.
Failed to perform as expected.......2007-06-12
This book, per its cover and introduction, aims to introduce recipes which are free of such allergens as gluten, dairy, eggs, and sugar. Unable to eat gluten and diary, I purchased this book in a bona fide effort to diversify my somewhat-restricted diet. In a blatant contradiction to its claims, almost every recipe in this cookbook calls for some type of diary (milk, buttermilk, butter, margarine, and powdered milk), sugar, and/or eggs. There are only so many substitutions that can be made without altering the chemical make-up required to achieve an edible baked good. There are also only so many substitutions a consumer should be required to make when she expects to purchase a ready-to-use cookbook. (The recommended products with which to stock an allergen-free pantry also include dairy products and sugar.) I am in the process of returning this book.
Not the book I was looking for.......2007-02-25
I purchased 3 allergy cookbooks due my daughter's allergies to dairy, soy, eggs and nuts: "Cooking Free" by Carol Fenster, "The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook" by Cybele Pascal, and "The Ultimate Food Allergy Cookbook and Survival Guide" by Nicolette, M. Dumke. Out of the three, my favorite by far is "The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook."
"Cooking Free" lists margarine and other soy containing products for many of its recipes. I know Fenster doesn't advertise that her recipes are soy-free but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has designated soy as one of the most major allergens and her book is for people with "multiple food sensitivities." She describes how to substitute oil for margarine in her recipes, but after looking over her recipes I don't think her dishes will taste that great with oil (or with the amounts of oil called for).
Even if my daughter didn't have allergies to soy, the recipes don't seem very inspirational, exciting, diverse or particularly healthy to me. I find Pascal's book more reader friendly and better organized. Fenster's stocking the pantry section isn't as complete as Pascal's.
Very Good Cookbook for people with multilple food sensitivities.......2007-01-15
This cookbook was very helpful to me since I have multiple food allergies/sensitivities. The breads still are a challenge to me, but I am able to make many of the quick breads without a problem. It was a life saver when I found I could not tolerate eggs anymore. I would recommend it to any and all who are celiac with dairy and egg sensitivities. I can't wait for Carol Fenster's newest cookbook due out in 2009!

This is not only a serious cookbook, it's also all about women's history. The Wild Woman Association was started with the publication of Autumn Stephen's Wild Women in 1992, and its primary purpose is to rediscover and rewrite our wild foresisters back into history! Here's a book with Isadora Duncan's asparagus salad, Alice B. Toklas's original fudge, Cleopatra's orgiastic oysters, and more, interspersed by highly entertaining stories about the wild women and their wild, scrumptious recipes! As another wild woman, Julia Child used to say, "Bon Appetit!" Guys can buy this book, too--try some of the luscious concoctions yourselves and maybe learn a thing or two about your wild sisters and mothers and wives!

the kitchen heathen's comments.......2000-02-20
I am NOT a cook but this amusing book provides an entertaining daydream. Anyone with this sense of humour gets my vote- and I read the book from cover to cover for its short witty anecdotes about famous women. Without cooking anything (yet) it was great fun and I have given it as a present to many people -just for the descriptions. "My Kingdom for a Pizza" "Cleopatras Pearls" "For whom the Chips Toll " etc "Eleanor's Eggs" (Roosevelt) could perhaps do with a witty frozen storage section for our modern misses- but cannibalism isn't included in the book- as yet! I wait for the next edition with baited breath .
Fabulously Funny Feminist Flambes!.......1999-08-13
This is the most FUN cookbook I've ever read: the recipes are real--easy-to-do and delicious; the snippets about renowned women's lives and the recipe dedications to them are entertaining, intelligent and sly. I've never before encountered a cookbook that I couldn't put down 'til I'd finished reading it! And...I've always KNOWN that I'm right--champagne and chocolate cream pie DO go together!!

The owners of the popular Parisian floral-design shop Milles Feuilles, Pierre Brinon and Philippe Landri, have a love of flowers that is inseparable from their passion for interior decoration. They peppered their shop with antiques, linens, and objets and covered every available surface with gorgeous flower arrangements. Then they decided to celebrate the shop's 10th anniversary by sharing the secrets of their floral wizardry in the form of this luscious volume, which they have filled with enchanting creations. The rich photographs do justice to the designs, showcasing not only the arrangements but their well-chosen backdrops as well. And they provide more than merely visual evidence of their artistry; the two also discuss the composition principles behind each arrangement (including how to choose the perfect container) and explain the specifics of how to achieve the look, though they do presume a readership with some prior flower-arranging experience. Taking a seasonal approach, Brinon and Landri demonstrate what can be accomplished at each time of the year, from a romantic spring bouquet of lilacs and peonies or a summer centerpiece of enameled jugs filled with sunflowers, cornflowers, and santolina to a fall cluster of berries, rosehips, and dahlias, or a winter posy of dried hydrangeas topped with velvety white roses. A truly extraordinary presentation. --Amy Handy

Too simplistic.......2000-02-01
This book was written for those without a high school education. It did not contain any relevant information that you couldn't get from a basic pamplet, and included some condescending sections on stopping hard drug abuse and contraception.

The more you hear Singer the more you want to hear him .......2006-11-19
Richard Burgin took five and one half not easy years to put together these interviews with the great Singer. Burgin says that Singer was suspicious and dark-mooded at times, but that he also could be kind and of course endlessly entertaining. Singer tells us here much about his literary practice and faith, his love of a story which is a story and his belief that the study of character is the heart of fiction.
"The writers who don't discuss character but problems -- social problems or any problems -- take away from literature its very essence. They stop being entertaining. We, for some reason, always love to discuss and discover character. This is because each character is different, and human character is the greatest of puzzles. No matter how much I know a human being, I don't know him enough. Discussing character constitutes a supreme form of entertainment."
Singer loved to be interviewed and spin his own story and credo in a variety of ways. Burgin's work is one of the first interview collections in English and is a valuable addition to Literature on his life and work.
