In mid-February 1944 Marian Elizabeth Smith, a young Wisconsin woman, met Marine Corps Lieutenant Eugene T. Petersen on the passenger train, El Capitan, as it made its 42-hour run from Los Angeles to Chicago. After a brief acquaintance, he left the United States to join the Third Marine Division on Guam and eventually to take part in the battle for Iwo Jima in February and March of 1945. The collected letters of their subsequent 18-month correspondence reveal much about wartime life at home and abroad. This correspondence represents a time capsule of current events as Smith and Petersen discuss Franklin Roosevelt, the United Nations, internationalism, popular movies, the French aviator and poet Antoine de St. Exupery, the comic strip Barnaby, and the frustrations of dealing with sometimes less-than-enlightened parents. The loss of Marian's brother during the bombing of Ploesti, Rumania, in June 1944, brought Petersen and Smith closer together, and after hundreds of letters the "chance for love" Marian had suggested early in their correspondence evolved into a marriage that has endured for more than half a century.

As one of the Marines mentioned in this book, I am, of course, biased. However, it opens a window on the home front in those days, alternating with letters describing the tedium (and humorous events) of military life between campaigns.
Reveals the life of a replacement officer based on letters.......1999-07-16
Petersen has published all of the letters to and from his wife during his service in the Marines. As such the book is a documentary source containing unedited contemporary material. In addition, the letters relate a love story that was common during the period. The gradual changes in the relationship are revealed in the letters. The anxieties and boredom of the life of a replacement is well described and gives the reader a true insight of the personal side of the history of the 3rd Marine Division. I recommend the book highly especially for anyone who has been a replacement.

In February of 1944 two strangers spent 42 hours sitting next to each other on the train from Los Angeles to Chicago. They shared a few meals, much conversation, and a kiss. They found they had much in common, and before they went their separate ways in Chicago, they agreed to write each other. Gene Petersen was 23, and an officer in the Marine Corps, and Marian Smith was 22, and a secretary for a defense manufacturer. Over the course of their 18-month correspondence, they tested their views and ideals on each other, and discussed their post-war expectations and their fervent desire to make the world a better place. Gene and Marian were idealistic liberals, extremely well read, and very concerned about both national and world politics. During a troubling time for both of them, each stepped up and performed the role of best friend. Their "chance for love" turned into a life-long reality.
Marian's letters reveal what life was like in the States during the end of World War II, with food shortages, travel difficulties, and long lines at movie theatres. Marian occasionally went home to Wittenberg, Wisconsin to visit and assist her parents, who had a furniture and undertaking business. "Dad took a man up to Wausau in the ambulance Tues. morning & brought him back that night in the hearse (same car - different personalities)." When Marian's brother Franklin was reported missing in action, the frequency of their letter writing increased substantially.
Gene's letters show what it was like to be an officer in the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre, mentally juggling stretches of boredom with periods of intense combat. During the three-week battle at Iwo Jima Gene's eloquent letters turned into terse notes, but he kept writing. "March 4, 1945 - still shelling dump and airfield - infantry officers gone to front but not many specialists - 9th day today - haven't had my clothes off yet".
I accelerated through this book until I finished. Somewhere around the middle I no longer felt like I was reading a book. I felt like I was reading two packets of letters I had found in the back of a drawer I shouldn't have been looking in. At times it was the historical facts which fascinated me. Other times it was sheer voyeurism.

Relaxation is key to all life's problems.......2006-11-13
Why five stars? Simple. This book is simple. It is straight foward, easy to use, and safe. Why, after all that has been said, do I claim this book is safe? There is only one chapter on kundalini activation, and it is only in an indirect fashion, that activation occurs. The book focusses on sitting and relaxation techniques. The emphasis is on attentive awareness, cultivated to the point of concentration. There are no techniques in the entire book which would produce any explosive psychic reactions. Taking the alarmist position can be remedied with a perview of antero alli's angel tech, the article on kundalini crackups is particularly enlightening. The main exercise involving the kundalini is the solar plexus charging technique, by which the practitioner concentrates on an internally generated heat until absorbsion of the bodymind process saturates awareness with heat. This experience of laya is an indirect experience of the kundalini energy, centered in the manipura chakra, the center of balance and equilibrium. I suggest starting with chapter one, use the chakra meditation from magical tattwas, or the suhum gayatri from death and dying. Do it fourteen days before moving on. You don't need them to achieve progress however, remember the technique is the goal. Achieving relaxation and self-mastery are in fact noble goals we should all hope to attain in our lifetime, I believe.

Some previous reviewers such as "rain cloud" has declared himself god and has declared other people's pains and feelings unimportant. What he and others like him (and there are far too many of them) fails to realize is that just as a drug might give no side effects to one person, it may give horrifying side effects to another. This is the way kundalini works. Just because you happen to be part of the majority that do not feel any side effects from kundalini, it would ignorant, careless, unfeeling, self centered, self absorptive, and stupid of you to think that other people won't experience it either. In addition, it would be selfish, irresponsible, unaccountable, and even criminal of you to preach kundalini as if there were no dangers or precautions to beware of. You are playing with fire and playing with fate itself. You are playing with other people's lives and potentially destroying lives.
There may or may not be an ultimate good effect to kundalini, but is it worth the hell it can give to some people? Is this a deal with the devil?
Approach kundalini with caution. If you feel sideffects from a kundalini procedure then stop before you hurt yourself real bad. Another big problem with kundalini is that you don't know if you went too far until it is too late. The side effects sometimes takes up to 24 hours to "kick in" after a kundalini session, so if anything, the initial session should be very brief and very light - not the overloaded stuff advertised by this book.
Finally, if the Bible's book of genesis warns of the "serpent" (a.k.a. kundalini ) who decieves you with occult powers in exchange for your own alienation from god, how can you trust it? Gopi Krishna, a well known sufferer of kundalini hell, concluded in his books that there was no God, only a mindless energy that permeates all. This shows that kundalini has alienated him from God to a far higher degree than adam and eve when they were expelled from eden.
This may very well be a counterfeit spirituality. The bible has stated "A tree can be judged by its fruits". Knowing the hell that this serpent can do, what kind of tree do you think it is ? In addition to the physical and mental horrors, a lot of people have reported involuntary actions that make them act like snakes - including postures and hissing ! A lot of people have reported a helpless feeling like an angry demon or evil spirit is taking over their body. Unlike a lot of other things that produce side effects, Kundalini's side effects are known to commonly last a lifetime.
Another example of "A tree can be judged by its fruits" is the character of a lot of these kundalini instructors. For example, if they talk a lot about love and spirituality, yet they often burst out in rages of anger, that should tell you that something is not quite right.
Instead of diving into this risky snake pit of kundalini, I would recommend that you should consult a gifted pastor or individual with the power of Jesus in him.

Ok, seriously...results will vary. Was this book so dangerous as others claimed it to be? Did it hold some magical blue print to a secret system that was somehow hidden away all this time from the general public? It sure sounded like it when I read the reviews on this workbook. All this danger and enhanced psychic powers for under $20 bucks! Truly, "AMAZING"...I thought to myself. So with my anxious trembling hand, I reached over and guided my mouse to the check out button. With one swift click I added the workbook to my Amazon.com shopping cart. Didn't sleep much, too much anticipating. When finally, it ( the dangerous workbook ) arrived. Good thing, reading the cover didn't make my kundalini rise up and kill me.(Just Kidding) Looking inside the workbook didn't make my chakras spin off my etheric body and leave me a hollow shell either. (I'm Kidding ok.) If I paid more than $20 for this workbook...well that might have given my blood pressure a dangerous spike upwards. So far so good. The workbook was simply just that, a workbook. I'm glad I purchased it. It will help with my study on Manifestation.
Caution.......2003-12-24
Kundalini is an extremely effective practice, and it is absolutely NOT something that should be learned from a book. Dr. Mumford's emphasis on fast results, and ego based gratification is a dangerous way to begin exploring your body's energy, and there are dangers in practicing the pranayama he advocates.
This topic should be explored with a teacher-- fast results are not always good results.
a good guide for progress but little skrewed.......2002-11-23
as a how to book for the more esoteric practices of yoga not bad,simple and direct explanations & exercises. and yes it is intense but doable.what I find skrewed is mumford's explanation of the yamas and niyamas they are little off. I would refer you to the yoga sutras or the thirumandiram. both are much better guides on the philosopy. bisides that overall a good book

Great For the devout Chileheads.......1998-03-24
I love the book mainly for the descriptions of the many hot sauces listed, as well as a look at the actual bottles. As a collector, it has helped me save a bit of time looking around the shelves for some of the sauces. The only drawback to this book is that while there is a listing of some of the hot sauce catalogs, there is little information on actually contacting the manufacturers. After scouring several catalogs I still can't find a some of the sauces in the book. Overall, I'd heartily recommend it to other hotheads and fans of the fire.

This was okay. It was just about techniques that I already knew from when I was a little girl many many years ago. I had assumed it was new techniques therefore I was just a little disappointed in the book.

This book provides easy to follow written and photographic instructions. Provides instructions for a variety of finger weaving designs. Also provides tips for color arrangement and others to help your project look the way it's supposed to.
In Depth.......2005-09-01
The book is highly in-depth and covers a wide range of cultures and techniques.
Due to the nature of the subject matter, I doubt that many people would be interested in this book. However, this book hold great historic value as since the art of finger weaving is dying out in cultures all across America.
As a Cherokee, I want to have authentic regalia for pow wows and when I go into schools. My own people have forgotten much of how to do this sort of weaving. But, thanks to the book, I can re-create items like my ancestors once did.
My only bit of advice is that I would like the author/publisher to do an expanded version of the book for more examples...or maybe a DVD or online accompanyment to the book so that you can actually see people weaving. Sometimes, no matter how great the book is, nothing beats seeing it done.

Disappointing.......2006-03-09
For a baby memory book it is really lacking in space. I love Linda Spivey's work and, in fact, used a previous book for my older son. The wording is very special, but the pages and binding are entirely too small for a memory book. Storing mementos in it is out of the question.

Arthur Henry Knighton-Hammond was born at Arnold, Nottingham, England, the youngest son of a modest shopkeeper and his wife. Leaving school at the age of 11, he never gave up his determination to study art and become a painter. For some years he was obliged to limit his passion to evening classes at the Nottingham School of Art. His natural ability shone through and in 1900 he moved to London to make a living as an artist. Augustus John, noted for his harsh criticisms of his brother artists, exclaimed upon seeing one of Knighton-Hammond's numerous exhibitions in France, 'That man is the greatest English painter in watercolor of our time".

In 1920 Herbert H. Dow commissioned a series of paintings of Dow Chemical Company at Midland, Michigan, from British artist Arthur Henry Knighton-Hammond. The remaining works, which exemplify the industrial painting genre, were on display from 2000 through 22 June 2004 at the Chemical Heritage Foundation. Dow Chemical Portrayed, the catalog, accompanied the exhibit. The full-color plates show how a world-class artist captured Dow Chemical's industrial magnitude on canvas. Some of the sites depicted include interior and exterior views of the caustic pot house, the indigo shed, the Epsom salt plant, and the machine shop. The book also provides an overview of industry in art over the last 250 years and discusses Knighton-Hammond's early life, career, and six-month appointment in Midland.
