Fascinating Glimpses of Her Early Life.......2004-12-08
This book provides Mead's accounts of the people and events that most affected her thought and research. About half the book is devoted to her life before she began her career as an anthropologist. We meet her parents, Edward Mead and Emily Fogg Mead. Edward was an economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Emily divided her time between managing the household and pursuing her doctoral studies in the social sciences. Edward's mother, Martha Ramsay Mead, a former schoolteacher and principal, also lived with the family and was the primary director of their home schooling. Margaret describes her relationship with each of her parents and with her grandmother and siblings in turn. We learn how the family moved every season from one domicile to another, and how this shaped Margaret's concept of "home". Margaret also discusses how Edward related to his academic work and colleagues (such as when he organized a group to guarantee Scott Nearing's salary for a year after his dismissal). Margaret describes her schooling in detail, from the approach to learning that her grandmother and mother instilled with their home schooling efforts, to the various traditional schools that she attended and the social lessons she learned from them. She also discusses her college years and friends.
The second part of the book describes Mead's adult and professional life. She explains her relationships with all three of her husbands, and how in the case of Reo Fortune and Gregory Bateson, they collaborated together in their fieldwork. She also relates how she came to work with Franz Boas, and how he directed her research early in her career. She tells us about how she came to know Ruth Benedict, and how she considered Benedict one of her closest colleagues and friends. The last part of the book, covering Margaret's experiences as a mother and grandmother, is not as detailed, but does provide some personal observations.
For me, the most interesting aspects of this book were Mead's own interpretation of her motivations and accomplishments. She was a firm believer in both the value and necessity of studying cultures very different from her own. On the first page of the text, she tells us "I have spent most of my life studying the lives of other peoples, faraway peoples, so that Americans might better understand themselves." Later she notes, "to clear one's mind of presuppositions is a very hard thing to do and, without years of practice, all but impossible when one is working in one's own culture or in another that is very close to it." In summing up her work, she states, "I went to Samoa-as, later, I went to the other societies on which I have worked-to find out more about human beings, human beings like ourselves in everything except their culture. Through the accidents of history, these cultures had developed so differently from ours that knowledge of them could shed a kind of light upon us, upon our potentialities and our limitations, that was unique." Some anthropologists today have a different approach, believing that since one cannot understand a foreign culture completely, it is better to stick to observing one's own culture. There is still much validity, however, in Mead's point that you can't know what is natural or unnatural, innate or learned behaviors, unless you are aware of the wide range of possibilities exhibited by the myriad cultures of the world.
A Must For Future Anthropologists.......2002-12-25
This book is a must read for a future Anthroplogists.
It clearly brings together all her theories and it is a
heartfelt view on a extremly successful and inspiring
person in this field. I truly enjoyed her book and her
views on culture and the future of Anthropology. I became a big
fan of hers and will continue reading the rest of her books.
If you are only slightly interested in Cultural Anthropolgy
then I suggest you read her books. They are easy to read and
very insightful about culture.
It is worth every penny spend.
Interesting memoir of the early years.......1998-04-09
This autobiography is especially interesting for its insight into the professional life of a woman scholar in the 1920's and 1930's in a then new field of inquiry, although Mead did not encounter the extreme levels of resistance that make heroes and role models. Greek societies at her first college seem to have been far more repressive and damaging than were her graduate programs or employers. The professional rivalries are interesting. The book is especially strong in its depiction of Mead's parents, whose contrasting traits we can easily see influencing the daughter's ideas and character. Mead seems to be a keen observer of them, frank about their strengths and weaknesses, as dispassionate as she was in describing people in New Guinea. Mead is far less interested in or detailed about her three husbands. In fact, the autobiography seems oddly reticent, considering that its author was open minded, professionally interested in the sexual habits of other peoples, and unintimidated. She was able to ask Pacific Islanders what positions they preferred for intercourse, but unable in the autobiography to give a sense of the life of her marriages. We learn in detail what she packed for a trip, but only discover in passing that a divorce occurred. This book rewards readers more with cultural history than with a sense of the author's emotional life.

Woman of the Century.......2000-03-25
I've read this book and it's really amazing how a woman has transformed the field of anthropology covering almost her entire life. Margaret Mead presented a detailed account of her life which I'm sure will capture your hearts considering how she injected pieces of 'anthropological' truths or just simply, she'll let you savor every bit of joy in life. You'll love anthropology as a human science and not just some sickly academic subject. This is definitely a must-read!

Dr. Andrew Weil's groundbreaking handbook for people who want to take control of their lives and their health, Health and Healing presents the full spectrum of alternative healing practices, including holistic medicine, homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic, and Chinese medicine, and outlines how they differ from conventional approaches. The philosophical basis for his work in integrative medicine and optimum health, Health and Healing draws on Weil's own vast clinical and personal experience, as well as on case studies from around the world.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-07-17
This book was required reading in my college microbiology class. I've kept it ever since and I have read it several times more. I've also given this book as a gift. It will really open your mind to several types of alternative medicine. The fact that this was written by a "traditional" M.D. brings a bit more legitimacy to the various disciplines of medicine.
A Great Book.......2007-05-07
This book is without question the best book on health and healing I've ever read. It is a brilliant, fascinating and informed exploration of the science and philosophy of health. It will change your view of medicine, and in doing so should improve your health. If you have a body and a mind, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
This book is a great book........2007-02-16
I have known and a been friend and colleague with Dr. Weil, so I am biased. But when I read this book when it was first released in the 1980's I couldn't put it down. And I find myself returning to it often and recommending it to my patients that are new to integrative medical approaches. In this book, Dr. Weil shares his wealth of personal experience and professional wisdom which tells the story and history which led to the even greater of his works to follow. I do not miss anything he writes, but this one is especially favorite for the information about the history of the world's journey for health and healing.
Objective View Of Mulitple Healing Modalities.......2005-07-04
Dr. Weil presents an objective view of many healing modalities that may be familar to most Americans. He includes allopathic (traditional Western) medicine, homeopathic, naturopathic, osteopathic, and chiropractic paths; acupunction, holistic medicine, shamanism/mind cures/faith healing, and psychic healing. He not only presents assets and disadvantages of each modality, but also presents some theories on why any course of treatment works. He explores the role of faith and the patient's belief in the treatment as a positive contributor to the effectiveness of the treatment. He describes the "placebo effect", where people are cured of illness by drugs that have no biological affect on the illness. He discusses the origins and effectiveness of pharmeceutical drugs and narcotics.
Dr. Weil's questioning leads the reader to also question his/her own role in healing and in making appropriate choices in health care. His treatise does not entirely put down allopathic or alternative medicine, but does put each in its place so the reader is left with a sense of responsibility. It is up to us to decide what we, as persons seeking health, need in terms of treatment and what will choose to place our faith in.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book. A real "memory" pleaser!.......2007-06-15
The World's Fair of 1904 was perhaps the best ever. Other Fairs did a lot in there time but, just like the mighty ship, Titanic, we remember this one most fondly.
Seeing the Fair from the "food angle" is an intriguing and festive way to take a trip back in time. And while some things may not have been a direct invention of the Fair it is remarkable to think of how new many of our favorite respites were then including Ice Cream Cones, Iced Tea and Hot Dogs.
When all that most people know about the '04 World's fair was that given to us by Judy Garland and the staff at MGM it's nice to learn more and have a real feel for this great lost moment in time. A great book.
A Celebration of the 1904 World's Fair.......2006-05-26
"Musty 100-year-old books and scrapbooks were my daily companions for months, and I lost all sense of time. Thousands of newspaper articles from 1901-1905 provided the small pieces of information I used as the basis for this book, and weeks of thought resulted in the overall plan for the book." ~Pamela J. Vaccaro
Pamela J. Vaccaro loves to collect culinary memorabilia and enjoys teaching food history. In Beyond the Ice Cream Cone, she brings together 169 photos and stories of the World Fair, including pictures of rare mementos.
The chapters include:
Welcome to the Fair
Everyone Ate at the Fair
Concessionaires and Their Wares
The Fair and the Fairer Sex
Everyone Drank at the Fair
The Fare at the Fair
Free Lunch at the Fair
Food for Thought
Supersizing at the Fair
Truths, Half-Truths, and Anything but the Truth
Daily Specials
Main Events
Food Fights and Other Disputes
Leftovers
There are also a few recipes for Lemonade, Plum Trifle, Boston Brown Bread, Strawberry Cream Cake and Chicken Salad.
So, was Iced Tea really invented at the World's Fair? This book tells all...
Beyond The Ice Cream Cone is a very enjoyable read that brings back memories of your own visits to your local fair. I still haven't worked up the courage to try those deep fried Twinkies.

BEYOND THE ICE CREAM CONE:.............2005-09-09
What a fun book-a MUST for any 'foodie' trivia freak or anyone from STL.The old pix are delish!
Beyond the Ice Cream Cone is Beyond Wonderful!.......2005-01-11
This is a terrific book for anyone interested in history, as well as anyone interested in food! Author has a wonderful way of capturing the importance of the fair, it's place in history, and a fascinating study of food. It's a fun read, and a real fieldtrip to the Fair!
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the World's Fair.......2004-07-06
Enhanced with 169 duo-tone photographs and illustrations, Beyond The Ice Cream Cone: The Whole Scoop On Food At The 1904 World's Fair by academician and food history enthusiast Pamela J. Vaccaro is as informed and informative as it is fun and fascinating! In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1904 World's Fair, Vaccaro offers an in-depth descriptive history of the foods that were so central a part of the fairgoer's experience. Beyond The Ice Cream Cone addresses such issues as whether or not the ice cream cone, iced tea, hot dogs, Dr Pepper, and cotton candy (under the name of "Fairy Floss") were really introduced for the first time in the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904. Were the life-sized "nut" elephant and the intimidating "prune" bear the only displays at the Fair made of food items? What influence did the Pure Food Movement have on food offered at the Fair? The phenomena of free samples to promote the newly burgeoning food manufacturing conglomerates. Beyond The Ice Cream Cone is a compendium of culinary fair lore and examined legendary, providing the reader with definitive historical fact presented with a light and engaging touch. There are even 36 recipes reprinted and available for duplication in the family kitchen! Beyond The Ice Cream Cone is simply wonderful reading and enthusiastically recommended for personal and community collections!

EASY AND ELEGANT STARTING POINTS.......2007-02-27
An excellent choice for those looking for a range of quick designs with easy-to-follow directions,
handsome photos and clear illustrations of how to construct each project. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book.
I highly recommend this book for the beginning and intermediate beader. There are designs for sophisticated adults, casual looks, and a few that would appeal to young girls too.
I have read and own similar books but always go back to this one because it works as a springboard for developing my own ideas.
The opening chapters show and explain the purpose of all the major tools, stringing materials, seed beads and bead finishes, bead shapes and materials,
with just enough detail. Basic knots are clearly shown, along with clear diagrams of the easier weaves.
Good directions for using buttons as toggle clasps, something which is hard to find as thoroughly explained in other books.
The projects are tasteful, and include double- and single-strand bracelets and necklaces, 2 interesting ways to string lariats, stylish drop earrings, wearable rings, a necklace using large-hole, bone beads and memory wire bracelets.
Not a ton of projects, but you can make your own variations and not feel pressed to slavishly copy the designs, especially if you don't have the beads on hand.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do!
Great Inspiration.......2006-06-02
I've had this book for a few months now and find myself turning back to it for inspiration often. It's geared more towards beginning beaders, but there are enough of the more complicated projects to get my brain thinking of new ways to use the elements presented in the book. If you've never picked up a needle and thread to bead, you'll find this book very helpful. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow along. I especially love the flowers and leaf projects. It's a great recipe book of quick and easy beading projects.
Not my style of jewelry.......2006-04-08
I do NOT like this book at all - I think the designs are not attractive at all! They look junky and have no symmetry. It's definitely an individual's taste of style. Not worth it at all, in my opinion, and I wish I did not buy it! I won't be making any designs from this book, and will not be picking up any ideas etiher!
Lovely designs!.......2005-09-24
Looking for a book of easy-to-make beading projects? Creative Beading may be just what you need. Author Juju Vail offers more than 60 jewelry projects and variations, plus chapters on tools and materials, bead selection, techniques, and more.
There are plenty of simple bead-stringing projects made with pearls, crystals, fine buttons, and other treasures, but you'll also find some intriguing woven patterns for rings and bracelets. The author has great color sense, too, making her jewelry pieces very inspiring for the viewer.
Some of my favorite projects are the Bow Tie Band ring and bracelet, the Black Beauty ring, beaded beads, beaded buttons, and the Beaded Flower Charm featuring flower petals made of beads. Makes a great pendant!
Recommended for beginner through intermediate bead artists.

Book Description
You stayed up until 2 A.M. reading Jane Eyre. You woke up at 4 A.M. to watch the Royal Wedding. And you waited with baited breath to hear the names of Britain's newborn princes and princesses. But instead of wondering how the royal family could have chosen such eccentric names as Henry or Beatrice or even Eugenie, you wondered where you could find more of them.Beyond Charles amp; Diana is where you can find a whole empire of British names-- from universal to uniquely English, from royal to lower class, and everything in between. With the same wisdom and wit that made Beyond Jennifer amp; Jason the reigning authority on baby names, and with inside knowledge-- one author lives in London and the other is married to an Englishman-- this book tells you everything you need to know about British names:* The Brit Hit Parade-- what's hot in England these days and what's not, and what's in London Limbo* Class Consciousness-- the more names, the better (but Elizabeth Krystle Kayla Debbie doesn't quite make it!), and which names are "U" (Henrietta is; Heather isn't)* Literary Lights-- from Shakespeare, the Bard of Naming, to Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, to the modern Waugh, Wodehouse, and PymPlus royal names from the reign of the Saxons to the present, Scottish names and Welsh names, and much, much more......
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable.......2001-09-05
I thoroughly enjoyed this book which my parents-in-law gave me in what I suspect is their latest salvo in the battle which erupted after my twins Farouk and Kylie's christening.
One of the best Baby Name resources.......2000-08-02
The information I found in this book helped me tremendously in my search for names. With their usual wit and flair, Rosenkrantz and Satran present what you need to know about British names, the most stylish choices now, and important issues about class. Of course, if you've ever read any other books by them, you know they're into lists, andsure enough, there's plenty of lists here. I find English names almost perfectelegant, cool, calm, mysterious, but warm-hearted. Although some (like Emma, Isabella, and Justin) have been used to the point of critical mass in the US, most are astoundingly fresh yet at the same time familiar and usable today.
This book will help you find a distinctive name for your child that others will complement him or her on but will not make him/her feel like an outcast. Most of the time, the names on the "upperclass" list are classics or at least names that will not go out of style, whether they've ever been well-used or not; and the names on the "lowerclass" list are, while not making a person with that name a lowerclass person, generally choices that are dated, overly trendy, or not very well-thought-of. And just watch: as American parents get tired of the Wonderbready top picks that they're choosing today, they'll be turning to names like these to save the day.
Other than Beyond Jennifer and Jason, I think this is Rosenkrantz and Satran's best book, and is definitely worth shelling out the bucks for. Great job, guys!
The best for unusual but classy names........1998-10-23
This book is for those with eccentric tastes who don't want something totally weird or made-up sounding. The English use some fabulous names; hopefully this book will inspire more Americans to follow suit.

Book Description
Gershom Scholem is celebrated as the twentieth century's most profound student of the Jewish mystical tradition; Walter Benjamin, as a master thinker whose extraordinary essays mix the revolutionary, the revelatory, and the esoteric. Scholem was a precocious teenager when he met Benjamin, who became his close friend and intellectual mentor. His account of that relationshipÑwhich was to remain crucial for both menÑis both a celebration of his friend's spellbinding genius and a lament for the personal and intellectual self-destructiveness that culminated in Benjamin's suicide in 1940.
At once prickly and heartbroken, argumentative and loving, Walter Benjamin: The Story of a Friendship is an absorbing memoir with the complication of character and motive of a novel. As Scholem revisits the passionate engagements over Marxism and Kabbala, Europe and Palestine that he shared with Benjamin, it is as if he sought to summon up his lost friend's spirit again, to have the last word in the argument that might have saved his life.
Customer Reviews:
A great intellectual friendship and a tragic end .......2004-12-14
This is the story of a friendship between two of the most remarkable intellectual figures of the twentieth century , Gershom Scholem and Walter Benjamin. It begins in Berlin in 1914 and continues through their separation until Benjamin's tragic death twenty -five years later. Both of them were greatly interested in the historical processes of their times, in philology , in the meaning of signs and symbols, in Socialism, in Zionism. Scholem left Germany for the Jerusalem of pre- state Israel and became a central figure there in the development of the Hebrew University. He became too the great scholar who opened a new field that of Jewish Mysticism. Benjamin hesitated and seemed to always find the way to misfortune. But their conversation and their friendship illuminates fundamental issues of life and thought. This book should be read by everyone for whom the life of the mind is important.
