In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Crepes and Omelets, starts with a brief introduction of basic crepe techniques and recipes and the necessary equipment. A similar introduction is provided at the beginning of the section dealing with omelets. Following the two introductions are recipes for crepe and omelet toppings and fillings ranging from savory to sweet. Special chapters at the end of the book are dedicated to baked and microwaved omelets and omelets from around the world. Classics such as banana nut waffles, bacon and mushroom omelet, blini, butterscotch topping, chocolate sauce, crepes suzette, cherry and almond crepes, cheese omelet, ham, cheese and mushroom topping, Italian country frittata, potato pancakes, raspberry sauce topping, strawberry rum waffles and Viennese crepes appear next to unique recipes such as apricot meringue crepes, chestnut crepes, fresh lemon topping, honey orange topping, Jamaican banana topping, shrimp and mushroom omelet, smoked fish and egg crepes, and smoked salmon and lemon topping.

Hubby Dub Just Loves when I Cook from this Book.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Wangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.
Like all the books in the series "The Book of Breakfasts & Brunches" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them like in this book. Breakfasts in our house used to be about oatmeal or Cheerios, but not always. Just try Egg and Mushroom Benedict on Page 9 or the Croque-Monsieur on Page 63. Dub and I spent a year in Paris and we spent many a morning at those delightful outdoor cafes eating these and it's nice to revisit them once and a while in my own home or even on our sailboat "Tara." I know breakfast is supposed to be the healthy meal and we do usually do the oatmeal bit, but not on the weekends. Saturdays and Sundays (even though every day is basically the same on a sailboat) are out special days and we often start them with a recipe from this book. I love to cook and don't mind the extra trouble a nice recipe calls for and let me tell you Hubby Dub sure enjoys everything I serve him from this book. You will too.

Neither fish nor fowl & not what I expected.......2001-09-01
Every weekend my family and I cook at least one big breakfast together. I collect breakfast& brunch cookbooks, because we are always ready to try something new. I found this book overpriced for the thirty recipes which it contains, although the accompanying photographs are nice. The recipes themselves are pretentious, and require ingredients or combinations of ingredients that are not in most pantries, unless you work for Dean & Delucca. Saffron, thick-cut Seville marmalade, ripe peaches, steel-cut oats, sea salt and Stilton cheese. These ingredients are obtaintable in cities of 85,000 and over, or online, but it is necessary to plan ahead. No spontaneity in the morning allowed here! The author must have realized this at some point, or why would she have included yet another recipe for pancakes, for waffles and for the ubiquitous sticky bun? Borrow this book from the library and try some of the quick breads, then return it.
weekend treats.......2000-07-25
This small book contains only 30 recipes that are perfect for those "breakfasts in bed" or treating your family to something sweet and savory on the weekend. I thought the recipes were easy to follow and many of the recipes can be prepared in less than 30 minutes. I like the color photographs, but most important, I like the fact that I can plan, prepare, bake or freeze the recipes in advance. Weekends will never be comprised of cold cereal or plain pancakes again thanks to this tasty book.

Including 30 recipes from muffins, quick breads, loaf cakes to yeasted breads, this recipe book is not only for a quick and nutrtious breakfast but also an easy-to-follow guide for baking beginners. Most muffins and quick breads only need 20 minutes for baking. Baking during weekend morning is even wonderful. Country apple cake, pear gingerbread, sticky buns, and sour cherry brioche are all good ideas for a leisurely weekend brunche.

I love this book, it's tiny, cute, well laid out, great recipes, a little history and makes you hungry. Whenever I have cooked from this book I have had to fight people off to actually get a taste of anything myself. All the recipes work extremely well and it's as great a book to just sit and read.

Nice photos as stated, but misinformation in the text........1999-04-12
This book does have some beautiful photos indeed. I cannot speak of the other breeds, but as a Manx breeder, I was very disturbed at the description given for this particular breed. The statement made 'the crossing of two tailless cats will produce either no kittens or still-birth' is absolute rubbish!! Another ridiculous and misinformed comment was 'The Rumpy Manx has no trace of tail and has difficulty climbing and jumping.' I hate to think what the author may have got wrong on the other breeds!! Not very good for a book meant to inform the public. I was very disappointed indeed!!!

While the content of both the hardcover and paperback is the same, the paper quality of the handcover is much better which leads to better photo quality. If this seems like an important book to add to your library I would recommend splurging on the hardcover.
Step back in time.......2004-08-16
A great description of commercial blacksmithing in its most successful era. Excellent pictures of some of his completed works with enough details to allow you to make them.
An Excellent Book now in a Paperback Version.......2001-03-13
Samuel Yellin Metalworker was originally published in hard cover and has been out of print. I am pleased to see it released again in soft cover and at a reasonable price. This book is sort of a history of the Samuel Yellin organization and a tribute to the man's genius at creating beautiful ironwork. I especially like the quotes on the back cover of the book: "The true craftsman should know every branch of his craft and a piece of work can only be either good or bad. If one small part of the grille is bad, the whole grille is bad. For a piece of craftsmanship to be good not the smallest part should receive adverse criticism. And even though twelve men work on one pair of gates, they must appear when completes as though they were made by one man." That is requiring pretty exacting work from all of his help in his shop and is no wonder that he achieved such great stature as an Art Metal Worker. With this sort of attitude about the work from his shop, it is no wonder that this man achieve so much stature in only 55 years on earth. The beginning Chapter talks about Yellin's shop and business. The second chapter talks about and profusely illustrates the Yellin Wrought Iron. The next chapter presents Yellin's views on Craftsmanship being a reprint of a talk that he gave before the Architectural Club of Chicago on March 9, 1926. Interesting stuff. The next chapter is a group of Wrought Iron Selections that shows the great variety and wide range of the metal art that was created in the Yellin shop. This chapter alone is probably worth the price of the book because of its content of so many different types of objects. Through viewing such objects, one's mind becomes inspired and makes one able to do what Yellin says, "There is only one way to make good decorative ironwork and that is with the hammer at the anvil, for in the heat of creation and under the spell of the hammer, the whole conception of a composition is often transformed." I would say that this transformation takes place because of images that the ironworker has seen in the past, which tend to influence the way in which he or she sees the current project. By viewing many fine works, your mind can take on an appreciation of such work and help you to also produce similar works. Yellin urges the ironworker to "look to the past at fine works, but not to copy them." The final chapter talks about the Yellin Job Cards and shows a graph of jobs, job cards, and number of employees. It appears that Yellin's number of jobs peaked in 1923 and his number of employees peaked just before the stock market crashed about 1928. Everything sort of went down hill from there probably because of the great depression of the 1930s. Yellin died in 1940. An excellent book that every blacksmith and decorative metal worker should have in their library.

Samuel Yellin, Metalworker by Jack Andrews
This is a new release of one of the two books that have made Jack Andrews a household name in the blacksmithing community.(The other is the "New Edge of the Anvil.") While this book has been around for some time now the new release offers the title in a more affordable paperbound cover. Samuel Yellin is the king of the blacksmiths and a true inspiration to virtually anyone who has ever swung a hammer. at piece of hot steel. His accomplishments as a metal artist are thing to be grasped at and never achieved by the mere mortal. Andrews does and excellent job of capturing the spirit of this man who organized teams of immigrant blacksmiths into a shop in Philadelphia spread ironwork across the country. In this work you will learn the history that is the Yellin legacy, including the formative years before he was a household name. A time line gives important dates in his history. Of special interest are the historic photos of Yellin and those under his employ. Even better are the many pages of his work, each piece speaking volumes on its own. There are gates, railings, keys, locks, fireplace sets, lighting devices, whimsical creatures and more. Now that Andrews has brought this book back at less that ..., there are not excuses for not having it in your library. Just owning this book may make you a better blacksmith! Get one before the are all gone.

A Metalworking Classic.......2000-10-31
Jack Andrews and Skipjack Press have done us all a favor by republishing this book in paperback. Samuel Yellin's work remains an important subject of study, not only for blacksmiths, but for artists, architects, interior designers, and anyone who works with or enjoys ironwork. Jack Andrews worked in the Yellin shops at Arch Street and is deeply familiar with his subject, and his expertise shows throughout this book.
Of course, the many examples of Yellins work is enough reason to add this book to your library.. As usual, the scale of the works is sometimes immense, and requires the labor of fifty smiths to execute... but that's not what most people are after. The details shown in these works can give you a myriad of ideas to try in your own shop.
But there's more than that. Yellin's business practices are a lesson to us all, especially the way he documented all of his work. In a sense, this practice of Yellin's made books like this and the study of his work possible. He used job cards and took photographs of every piece of ironwork that went out the door. We should all document our work so well.
Yellin's thoughts on design and the artistic nature of forged iron make great reading as well. I keep going back to Yellin's discussion of "Craftsmanship" again and again, each time finding a new and interesting point to consider.
When you add all this with the fact that this reissue costs twenty dollars, you've got a real bargain. This book should be required reading for anyone with an interest in metals.

Insightful, dynamic.......2007-03-19
I was fortunate to hear and meet Yossi at a talk in St Louis. I was very impressed with his insight and realism combined with passion for Jewish Life. Since I grew up in Brooklyn and spent a year in Israel, his adventures parallel my own although I was much lower key than Yossi. I am not an extremist. So his book takes me the extra step. This is a very valuable book for anyone who is interested in the Jewish experience.

The Only Book of Its Kind.......1999-12-25
This is a most unique subject matter - I know no other book on it - about a former member of the inner circle of the JDL (Jewish Defense League). On that note, HaLevi offers invaluable information about why he (and others) joined, and their activities. Most poignant is their work on behalf of the Jews in (what was then) the Soviet Union; Halevi and his "friends" not only pulled guerilla theatre-type stunts on traditional Jewish organizations here in the U.S., "commanding" them to help these forgotten Jews, but the JDL also travelled to the Soviet Union to try to "free" the Soviet Jews (it didn't work, however). The other most compelling piece in his book is his writing about being a child of Holocaust Survivors - his father, a Hungarian Jew, hid in the woods for years during WWII and was saved by a kind non-Jew. As my parents are also Holocaust Survivors, I can attest that HaLevi writes incredibly well on his background. He explains his own personal story, how he came to hate Gentiles, and felt that another Holocaust was inevitable. However, when he fell in love with a non-Jewish woman, this part of his life was drastically altered. A remarkable book; you won't find another one like it.
