Book Description
1921. There is no century, perhaps, in English history that exhibits to our sight so many contrasts as does the 17th. Every age, no doubt, is a transition age, and every age exhibits change; but the 17th century may, in a very special sense, be characterized as a time of flux. It was an age of fervent religious enthusiasm, as also an age of licentiousness and indifference to religion. It was an age of gross superstition, as also an age which the foundations of modern scientific knowledge were laid. Contents: biography; skepticism; Platonism; royal society; psychical research.

This enormously popular book the best and most authoritative resource for unbiased information about how drugs affect the mind and the body covers a wide range of available substances, from coffee to marijuana, antihistamines to psychedelics, steroids to smart drugs, and discusses likely effects, precautions, and alternatives. Now expanded and updated to cover such drugs as oxycontin, Ecstasy, Prozac, and ephedra and to address numerous ongoing issues, including the United States" war on drugs, marijuana for therapeutic use, the overuse of drugs for children diagnosed with ADHD, and more, From Chocolate to Morphine is an invaluable resource.
Customer Reviews:
Forget DARE -- Teach From This Book in Schools.......2007-05-14
The title really says everything that needs to be said. This is a wonderful, unbiased book that's almost 100% scientifically accurate, which is far more than can be said about most books that purport to tell you everything you need to know about drugs and/or drug use and especially about drug users.
EDIT: After reading other reviews I've discovered that there's a lot of misunderstanding about the purpose of FCtM. It's meant to be a
basic primer on responsible drug use -- not an encyclopedia of every bit of information about specific drugs, not a guide to the Nasty Gritty World of Drug Abuse, and not a DARE handbook. If you read it expecting something it's not intended to give, you'll be disappointed. It is a basic handbook that attempts to teach conservative, sensible methods for using drugs (including caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs our society approves of) intelligently, safely, and hence responsibly. If that's what you're looking for, continue. If not, keep looking. (But you should read it anyway to shed your biases, just in case.)
I do not have any real problems with the book or with Dr. Weil's work in general. Things have happened since 2004, including extremely important new scientific information on the role of GABA and endorphins in anxiety and depression, which Dr. Weil and Ms. Rosen may or may not have been aware of and which has enormous implications regarding the use and abuse of heroin and other opiates.
The only out-and-out error I've noticed thus far in the book is a statement that claims the prescription medicine Adderall contains 'dextroamphetamine and methamphetamine'. It contains d-amp. and amphetamine, not methamphetamine.
He is more cautious than I would be, and I disagree with some of his conclusions (for example, that certain routes of administration are inherently abusive and/or more dangerous than others); compared to what else is out there and what others have said and done, however, this is an incredible book with few, if any, true peers in quality and comprehensiveness.
This book will not completely correct the damage done by DARE and years of social conditioning, but it will certainly help. It should be required reading in Health class for every single high schooler, at least. Enough said.
Intro to History, Uses & Properties of Psychoactive Drugs........2005-02-27
"From Chocolate to Morphine" (2004 edition) attempts to be a basic encyclopedic reference of psychoactive drugs and their uses, whose goal is to provide objective information on the risks and benefits of prescription, over-the-counter, illegal, and natural drugs for a modern audience living in a very drug-soaked society. The authors, Dr. Andrew Weil and Winifred Rosen, are forthright about their perspective: "We cannot say that we have no biases about drugs, but we think that we know what our biases are." They don't generally encourage or discourage recreational drug use. Instead, they repeatedly emphasize the necessity of education and avoiding dependency if one is to use drugs beneficially. I say "generally", because the authors' tone betrays obvious disdain for a few drugs and affection for some others.
The authors outline their viewpoint and purpose in the book's first chapter, where they also offer some rather silly advice to parents, teachers, and teens on communicating about drugs. But the book improves from there. Chapters 2-5 provide basic information: What is a Drug, Why People Use Drugs, Relationships with Drugs, and Types of Drugs. This is followed by chapters on Stimulants, Depressants, Psychedelics, Marijuana, a sort of catch-all chapter on Solvents and Inhalants/Deliriants/PCP and Ketamine, and Medical Drugs/Herbal Remedies/Smart Drugs. The information on each drug is not what I would call complete, and it probably isn't meant to be. Caffeine is handled poorly. Its immunosuppressant, diuretic, and damaging effects on the linings of blood vessels are not mentioned. On the other hand, the cases against tobacco and alcohol may be overstated. The book is very hard on heroin, speaks well of marijuana, but omits glaucoma treatment when discussing medicinal uses. The authors don't like anti-depressants, especially SSRIs. I can't say that I blame them, but, oddly, they are more harsh when discussing antihistamines. Descriptions for each drug contain history and basic information on uses, effects, and dangers. One of the best features of "From Chocolate to Morphine" is the Suggested Reading at the end of each chapter, which provides a list of related books and films for those readers who would like more detailed information.
The final chapters of the book address Problems with Drugs, Alternatives to Drugs, and the authors give us some Final Words on the subject of drug use -including some interesting advice regarding the treatment of drug addiction. The Appendix contains about 40 pages of interesting "First Person Accounts and Comments" on drug use, and is followed by a glossary and an index. Dr. Andrew Weil and Winifred Rosen don't hide their contempt for the current drug hysteria and drug policies in the United States. Nor do they deny how easy it is to become dependent on drugs if they are used carelessly or for the wrong reasons. "From Chocolate to Morphine" isn't a definitive work on psychoactive drugs, but it's a good primer that is easy to read. Those who intend to use any of these drugs on a regular basis will want more detailed information, for which the Suggested Reading sections are excellent guides.
Not for kid's education!.......2004-07-10
This book was recommended to me as an educational tool for my pre-teen children...NO WAY! I felt like the book did not address the dangers of the drugs at all. In fact, if anything, I would want to try some of the drugs after reading about them (if I didn't know better)!
An unbiased account from a heavy player in this arena.......2003-09-12
I bought this book for information on the subject upon which i like to study, hallucinogens, specifically tryptamine hallucinogens. Andrew Weil in this book does cover almost every drug, either legal or illegal, and in an unbiased fashion, noting the Pro's and Con's of each drug, namely dependence, affects, pharmacological uses etc.. On each drug, he explains the legality of them, thorougly, and where they fit in to society, which is important that i feel many other authors of the same subject have absent from their works, specifically speaking. One phrase Weil says which i think has immense credibility, is "There is no such thing as a bad drug, just bad relationships with drugs" and this book is riddled with phrases keyed to that effect. It is important to realize that people make decisions based on the basis of the information available to them, and we are in a sitiuation of propaganda, ill information for the reasons clandestine. This book very well puts all cards on the deck, and voices its opinion with no preconceived consequences for the information put forth. This book is up with Food of the Gods - Terence Mckenna and other books which have penetrated the thick barrior of governmental consequences. Highly recommended for those just getting interested in subjects which pertain to altered states of consciousness, student and teacher alike!
I didn't find this at all helpful.......2003-09-12
As stated, this book did nothing for me. As a writer interested in finding a drug reference book to refer to when giving a character a drug abuse problem, this was a waste of money. Focuses on history rather than effect, which is my main gripe; the blurb is very misleading.

Having confessed her jones for chocolate in Growing Up on the Chocolate Diet: A Memoir with Recipes Lora Brody celebrates her love affair with the Dark Lord in her cookbook, Chocolate American Style. What she calls American style might best be summed up as, "I want it and I want it now!" To which Lora Brody responds with, "Just how would you like to deliver chocolate to your mouth?" She leaves no chocolate base unturned.
Candy? There's an entire chapter (the complexities of melting and tempering are covered in Chapter One, "A Primer for the Home Cook," in which the author spells out what you need and what to do with it, fast and sweet and easy, with the marvelous closing line at the open door, "remember that no matter what your dessert looks like, the fact that you took the time and energy to make it instantly puts it ten pegs above anything you could buy a store."). You might think breakfast was out of the question, Cocoa Puffs aside. To which the author delivers chocolate caramel sticky buns, chocolate chip pancakes with chocolate butter, and chocolate-filled monkey bread. Brody moves through flans, pudding, pies, fudge cakes; through birthday cakes, marble cakes, tortes, and ice cream rolls; through home-made ice cream, fudge sauce, chocolate sauce, and frappe; through Old World faves brought here by our immigrant elders. She tackles pound cakes, cookies, brownies galore, moon rocks, chocolate squares and, Russell Crowe Bars, which border on don't ask don't tell. She encourages in a chapter all its own--"Kids in the Kitchen"--recruiting children to the ways of the Dark Lord. Shameless. And then there's romance. Make that, "Romance." Again, an entire chapter that distills the essence of the romantic gesture into all manner of chocolaty deliciousness.
Brody is a consummate pro--20 cookbooks into a sterling career--and she doesn't miss a beat. She knows a thing or two about producing a recipe that delivers. Some cookbooks come from the heart. Chocolate American Style, on the other hand, comes straight from the Lora Brody's central nervous system. It's a chocoholic's dream come true. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
A chocolate lover born and bred, Lora Brody knows better than anyone that when the urge to splurge strikes, there
is no substitute for rich, silky, sumptuous chocolate in one of its many delectable guises. Chocolate reigns supreme on a short list of national treasures, ranking right up there with Ted Williams and Mickey Mouse. Add a dose of American ingenuity and you've got the perfect recipe for indulgence.
In this lovingly compiled collection of sweet treats both plain and fancy, Lora Brody builds an irresistible case or eating chocolate morning, noon, and night. In chapters entitled The Candy Store, Comfort Me with Chocolate, Chocolate for Breakfast, Isn’t It Romantic?, and more, she presents the stuff of which a chocolate lover's dreams are made. Start the day with Chocolate Chip Pancakes with Chocolate Butter or Chocolate Monkey Bread, perk up a lunch box with homemade Whoopie Pies or Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake Brownies, or take a trip down memory lane with Tunnel of Fudge Cake and real Boston Cream Pie. Set a festive mood with White Chocolate Heath Bar Cheesecake or Chocolate Raspberry Torte. There's even a section of fun-to-make chocolate favorites that are perfect for kids. Whether the occasion is a formal celebration requiring a showstopper, a casual meal with family, or simply an after-school snack, there is a chocolate indulgence to make the moment that much sweeter. Lora Brody's always letter-perfect recipes guarantee this is a collection chocolate lovers will return to time and again.

A sweet feast.......2007-10-11
This is a wonderful book to add to your collection. There are many enticing chocolate recipies; so much so that you just might want to start making a shopping list and preheating the oven as soon as you start reading. The recipies are easy to follow for most kinds of cooks; and of course it helps tremendously to use really good, high quality chocolate. My favorite so far is the warm chocolate rice pudding...OMG! Serve this with warmed whipped cream. The chocolate monkey bread is fun to make and unbelievably delicious. I had made a mistake reading the recipe and added 3X the amount of butter in the bread dough...no harm done here - albeit you might needs a dose of Lipitor to bring your cholesterol down. Enjoy this book!
Solid value for money.......2007-03-07
This is attractive book featuring traditional as well as innovative recipes. Lora Brody's expertise in the science and art of cooking with chocolate is clear. The book holds forth on technical aspects as well as ideas and recipes. Its a good gift idea because it will work as a cookbook as well as coffee-table eye candy.
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because it lacks nutritional information. Also (IMHO) its about time cookbooks started to offer online resources where users can rate recipes/ include possible modifications and meal ideas.
Not bad, not amazing.......2007-01-20
I was excited when I saw this book and couldn't wait to add more chocolate creations to my repertoire. However, I soon got over my excitement. Although the recipes were not bad they were neither exciting nor unique nor uniquely American. Furthermore, I found the design of the book itself lacking in many ways: WAY too much blank space where more photos could have placed, the use of dark (chocolate) colored pages with light text was interesting visually but not conducive for ease of use while trying to bake, many recipes that could have fit on one page (which is an ideal I have for any cook book) carried over to another page (or over 3 pages) because of too much blank space and unnecessarily large font size and line spacing, etc. I think I may use a couple of the recipes from the book but this, in my opinion, is not a "keeper" on my shelves. I have found that "Pure Chocolate" by Fran Bigelow is a much better chocolate cook book.
Uh-Mazing Book on Chocolate.........2006-12-28
This is probably one of my favorite, if not most favorite, books regarding chocolate.. I think a lot of people feel intimidated by baking, and especially with temperamental chocolate, but Ms. Brody has an exceptional knack for making all her recipes very novice friendly.. I've admittedly used a few of her recipes for our dessert bar @ the cafe I used to work in and everyone raved about the Morning Glory Muffins which I added white chocolate to and placed them under the moniker of "White Chocolate Carrot Cake Cupcakes".. :) The white chocolate cream cheese frosting that accompanies this is phenomenal as well as are all the other sinful recipes I've given a swing at.. I don't think there's a recipe in here that I wouldn't love to try, and even though I'm a chef yes, I can still be picky..
If you love chocolate pastries and seeing satisfyingly "WOW" smiles on your friends and family, BUY THIS BOOK! - Just don't drool on the pages and the photos are exquisite as well..
Five Star Baking Book.......2006-08-11
We have only made a handful of these recipes so far, but every single one of them has been out of this world amazing. The chocolate chip muffins with coconut-brown sugar topping were so delicious - the perfect combination of muffin and chocolate chip cookie. Everyone who tasted them couldn't stop talking about how wonderful they were.

Book Description
Studies of Latin American music often overlook its Cuban roots and the political policies that brought the musicians to the United States. This work rectifies that omission by examining the Afro-Cuban influence upon Latin American music and its various idioms. A brief history of Afro-Cuban musicians in the United States provides the background and context for the study. Influential pre-revolutionary Afro-Cuban immigrant musicians, such as Mongo Santamaria, Jesus Caunedo, Charanga and Pup Legarreta, Juan Carlos Formell, and Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, discuss both their music and their attitudes toward the political policies that led them to flee Cuba. Speaking from firsthand experience, founding figures of Latin music in the United States present unique insights into the Afro-Cuban experience within the Latin musical community. Adding to the musicians' stories, Gerard provides a history of relations between Cubans, African Americans, and Puerto Ricans in the Latin music community. He also discusses the impact of the mass emigration in the 1980s that brought many more Cubans to the States. This multicultural approach to Latin American music will appeal to music and Latin American history scholars and to jazz and Latin music enthusiasts. An appendix includes album listings for the musicians interviewed.

Kimono-clad cats are dancing and drinking!.......2000-12-19
Ukiyoe (Japanese wood printing) cats by UTAGAWA Kuniyoshi(1797-1861), who was crazy about cats. 24 full color postcards. At the top of the book, there are description on the artist and each works. Robustly bound and also suitable for collection.
Don't expect cute and lovely kittens. Kuniyoshi's cats are realistic, sometimes they might be even grotesque to Western people's eyes. Most of cats are clad in Kimono, dancing, drinking and play Japanese chess!

Mornign Star Quilt.......2007-02-11
Seller was quick and efficient. However, this quilt pattern is also in Quilt Through the Seasons, also by Eleanor Burns, which gives you many patterns for not much more money.
Beautiful & simple.......2003-02-08
This is one of the first few quilts I attempted. Ms. Burns has a knack for clear, concise instructions. One of the nice things for a beginner is that she includes pressing information - no dilemas as to what direction to press seams. Easy enough for a beginner, a more advanced quilter can play with fabric selection, fussy cutting, etc. The results are lovely.
Morning Star Quilt.......2000-07-22
Another book in the "Quilt in a Day" Series, can easily be used by a first time quilter to an experienced quilter. Step-by-step instructions lead you through several sizes. From pillow shams, to wallhangings, to king-sized quilts. Five different quilts are shown in color to help show contrasts in colors and to give you ideas on how to make your own. This book is a good resource to have in any quilter's library.

Excellent!.......2001-07-18
I would like to thank Ms. Fox for such a wonderful book! I just became a stepmom of two and have no kids on my own. I have no experience whatsoever on parenting. Even though the book is more focus on children from both sides I found it very helpful! It gave me a lot of knowledge on what the kids are thinking and their behavior. After reading "Making the Best of Second Best", my life has been very easy with my husband and stepkids. I recomend this book 100%. Once again, thank you Ms. Fox!
Wise and down to earth advice.......1999-12-02
Kathleen Fox offers a day-to-day practical guide to positive stepparenting in a blended family.... Other titles for this book could very well have been "How to Get Along In Your Blended Family Without Being a Doormat", or "How to Change Your Negative Attitude into A Positive One", or "How to Create A Healthy Stepfamily for the Children". This is a book that can help all us enormously, and I would especially recommend it as a must read to every SWC member who has very recently or is about to enter into a blended family. The author does an excellent job of letting you know what you are getting into and how to react to a highly, more complicated and difficult situation than getting married for the first time where no children are involved. A blended family is far more complicated than the original family. You entered into a marriage where the baggage was not dropped down the street on your wedding day. Her life was far from perfect, and she admits that she too went through a lot of pain, anger, resentment and temper tantrums.
There were many days when she, like me, wanted to run away from it all. I like Ms. Fox because she is one of us, someone I could very much relate to. She also very wisely tells you the importance of taking care of yourself. She is also telling us the rewards of hanging in there.

Excellent book for the stepmomther or second wife!.......1999-04-11
This book was very well done, it hit home on many points and shows the reader that a positive relationship with stepchildren is very possible! I loved this book and refer to it quite often. Don't let the title fool you.

Book Description
Four months before Hitler came to power, Pavel Friedländer was born in Prague to a middle-class Jewish family. In 1939, seven-year-old Pavel and his family were forced to flee Czechoslovakia for France, but his parents were able to conceal their son in a Roman Catholic seminary before being shipped to their destruction. After a whole-hearted religious conversion, young Pavel began training for priesthood. The birth of Israel prompted his discovery of his Jewish past and his true identity. Friedländer describes his experiences, moving from Israeli present to European past with composure and elegance.
