Book Description
An observant, plain-speaking American general in diplomatic service in Hungary at the end of WW1. A fascinating glimpse into the fratricidal dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Customer Reviews:
This is a "must read"..........2002-12-10
I have read this diary and could not stop! Imagine being able to ask today's military bosses, such as Colin Powell, what they REALLY think - and get the straight answer? Of course, you would'nt be able to get it. What Gen Bandholtz writes here is how he really feels about things. No punches pulled. Readers 80 or 90 years from now will get to see how Gen Powell feels about things.
This book shows how a man, just doing his job, comes to see injustice and underhandedness from all directions. Gen Bandholtz died a few years after this, but I'll bet his experience in Budapest stuck with him every day.
This is well worth your time and money.
Shedding light on a dark passage in history.......2001-02-17
Woodrow Wilson promulgated an idealistic solution for the problems of Central Europe: the right of national self-determination. This apparently simple and self-evidently just doctrine ignored a host of psychological, historical, geographical, and above all, political complexities. Sure enough, in the Versailles peace process following WWI, the major powers and minor players pulled and twisted the doctrine to tatters in order to promote their own interests. Nowhere was the result as geographically dramatic as in the case of Hungary. Harry Hill Bandholtz, the American Allied representative in Budapest during some of the chaotic years between the armistice of 1918 and the Treaty of Trianon of 1921, witnessed the conniving, skullduggery, venality, and sometimes brutality of both his allied "bretheren" and all the local nationalities at first hand. He stood alone, at times, trying to enforce order and justice. Thanks to a stroke of luck that put him at the head of the Allied Commission in the nick of time, he single-handedly saved Budapest from a complete sacking by the Romanian forces who occupied it briefly. His diaries display a straightforward military man of honor who nonetheless relishes the ironies and absurdities of events around him as he struggles to see the right thing done. Not only is it a critical primary source for an obscure but important piece of history, but it is a moving and, at times, screamingly funny read.

Book Description
In his first book, The Siren Years, the public was introduced to Charles Ritchie as a young diplomat serving with the Canadian Embassy in wartime London. In Diplomatic Passport, we follow his career as he climbs the rungs of the diplomatic-service ladder – as an advisor to the Canadian Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference in 1946; as a Counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Paris, where his friends celebrate Ritchie Week – to the city’s surprise; as Assistant, Deputy, and Acting Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs in Ottawa; as Canadian Ambassador to Bonn, where he finds himself reciting Little Red Riding Hood in German at a state dinner; and as Permanent Ambassador of Canada to the United Nations.

Book Description
In the fourth volume of selections from his delightfully wise and witty diaries, we see Charles Ritchie, the seasoned (but never stuffy) diplomat, in his last two major postings – as Canadian Ambassador to Washington and as Canadian High Commissioner to London. Full of anecdotes rather than briefing papers (was JFK really “shooing” the new Canadian ambassador out of his office?), Ritchie’s diaries are at their amusing best.

Read This Book: Help Yourself and Help Others.......2006-11-02
Anyone coping with trauma or who wants or needs to know how to help someone coping with trauma will benefit from reading this book. When I am or have been really struggling to just get through the day, and all I could do was eat sleep and read a few pages...this is the book I read. It is always by my bed within reach. I have bought copies for friends, asked my therapist to read it, and had the good fortune to meet Jon Allen as a patient in a psyche hosptial where he taught trauma patients about what trauma does to people and how to cope. I wish I could convey the deep understanding and compassion and dedication this man shared with us and how much he listened to each and every persons story with such attention and helpful feedback. This book is a reflection of all that I experienced and more. The chapters on emotion, memory and relationships helped me to understand things I thought I already understood. This book has helped me and helped me help others. I wish everyone would read this book. There are so many ways people get traumatized and don't even know it and even if they did, so many don't know that there are important things to understand and ways to cope and hopefully heal.
If you buy one book on trauma, here it is!.......2005-12-23
If you buy just one book on Trauma this is the one to buy. Not only does Dr. Allen write with compassion and understanding, but he writes both about despair and hope. Trauma survivors reading the first half of the book will see themselves and their histories in the details he writes about trauma. You will also come to a better understanding of just why Trauma is so hard to leave behind. His chapters on brain physiology may seem complicated, but more than anything they are worth wading through for you to gain forgiveness for yourself and the persistence of your traumatic reactions. In the second half of the book he offers hope in the form of chapters (not lists) of very specific things you can do to help yourself recover. Dr. Allen treats the trauma survivor with respect and confidence that s/he can and will work towards a better future.
While I have written this review in the voice of trauma survivors, professionals who work with trauma are DUTY BOUND to read this book. The documentation and comprehensive review of current literature will update your knowledge and give you very specific information on working with trauma survivors. In addition, Dr. Allen shows a respect for survivors that all professionals would all do well to emulate.
Comprehensive and wise "self-education" book.......2005-06-28
This book will help trauma sufferers and the mental health professionals who work with traumatized individuals. While filled with helpful advise, it moves beyond simple explanations and easy answers. It's not a "light" read, but it's well worth the effort. This is a healing and informative book for any reader who wants to understand the effects of trauma on the self and relationships.

Great Book!.......2000-03-28
This a terrific book for infants. The illustrations are well done and the text is very simple. My 8 month old loves it! The book is about an adorable little princess who wants a pet. Each page shows an animal and what sound the animal makes. My son loves when I make the animal noises. There are other books in the Little Princess Board Book series that are good as well. They each go over familiar themes, bedtime, animals and shapes but the illustrations give them a fresh perspective.

Photographs, postcards, magazine clippings, and other printed images can be transferred to fabric relatively easily as is shown in Jean Ray Laury's The Photo Transfer Handbook. Using a laser copier at a copy shop, the image can be photocopied onto heat-transfer paper and then pressed onto the fabric with a household iron, or for an even more permanent application you can bring your fabric along to the copy shop and have the image set with a professional heat press. You can also begin with an image in your computer and use an ink-jet printer to output the image onto special photo-transfer paper (generally available at craft and office-supply stores) and then iron it on or use a home heat press. (Even if you don't have a scanner you may still be able to use this option; for example, if your computer has fax capabilities, scan the picture at a copy shop and fax it to yourself.)
Quilter Jean Ray Laury offers extensive information on both methods and their variations, as well as helpful troubleshooting tips, four step-by-step projects, and a remarkable gallery of quilts by various artists showcasing this technique, in styles ranging from snapshot-cute to art-quilt sophisticated. Aimed primarily at quilters, the advice here should prove equally helpful to anyone who works with fabric, since garments and home-decor items can readily benefit from this interesting approach. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Good Information.......2003-07-22
In that this was written in 1999, and this is now 2003 - this
book IS well written for anyone that wants to attempt photo
transfer. I've done considerable research on this, read far too
many articles with conflicting information on the process, attempted too many techniques with poor results.
This is exactly as intended - a handbook, it compares the various techniques with results.
Many resources now have websites and there are more products on the market. The biggest hurdle between 1999 and 2003 is the digital camera and the advancement of computers and printers. So with today's technology and computer saavy, photo transfer can easily be done and this book is a useful tool for reference and guidelines.
out of date information.......2003-03-03
I found this book was not as advertised. I expected a variety of methods and products. Perhaps this is all that was available in 1999. There are a great number of products and techniques currently available that are not mentioned in this supposed "handbook" It containes the same info transfer paper packages contain, a gallery of projects and some bad quilting advice. I was very disappointed.
Too Crafty!.......2001-09-18
I purchased this book in the hope of discovering a new way of transferring computer-generated line drawings or pictures onto cloth in order to then embroider the images. I had experimented with two types of computer transfer papers and found them totally unsatisfactory for my needs (stitching on rubberized fabric is not my idea of fine art). This book was simply filled with crafty ideas about what could be done with these unsatisfactorily transferred images ... something even worse than T-shirts. I think the rag dolls with photographs of people's faces said it all.
Too Crafty for Words!.......2001-09-12
I purchased this book in the hope that I would discover a new way of transferring computer-generated line drawings or pictures to cloth in order to then embroider the images. I had experimented with two types of computer transfer papers and found them totally unsatisfactory for my needs. Stitching on rubberized fabric is not my idea of fine art. This book simply offered previously unimaginable things I could do with this type of unsatisfactorily transferred image ... something even worse than T-shirts. I think the rag dolls with photographs of people's faces said it all. Yuck! If I could have given it 0 stars, I would have!
step-by-step instructions, nice projects & great galleries.......1999-08-31
This is a wonderful book for anyone who has ever wanted to transfer a photo. The book is in full-color with many photos. Clear step-by-step instructions are included for both the transfer process & projects.
Instructions for both creating & applying a transfer using either a laser copier or computer printer are covered. Tips on choosing images, troubleshooting, adding & removing color are also included.
Next, there are inspirational galleries of beautiful family quilts, studio quilts, & creative clothing. Captions below each piece describe the creation process. One of my favorites is a Tuscany castle scene.
A few projects follow, including a photo pillow & three quilts. There is also a great resource list that includes many places to buy the transfer paper, as well as mail order photo transfer & film services.

Book Description
Aubrey Beardsley lived the life of a decadent, and his art--witty, irreverent, grotesque--often shocked late-Victorian sensibilities. His work was also sublimely elegant, and his stylish, suggestive illustrations for Oscar Wilde's Salome, and for The Studio, The Yellow Book, and The Savoy were widely admired throughout Europe and America. In Peter Raby's new book, Beardsley's brief, meteoric career is placed in the context of the remarkable age in which he lived. Complemented by numerous reproductions of his work, it presents a captivating portrait of the artist and the last decade of the 19th century. Peter Raby is the author of Bright Paradise, Samuel Butler, and The Cambridge Companion to Oscar Wilde.

Book Description
Bernard Rapoport has lived the American Dream. Born to Russian Jewish immigrant parents in San Antonio, Texas, in 1917, he grew up in poverty and worked his way through the University of Texas during the Great Depression. In 1951, he founded the American Income Life Insurance Company, which he developed into a multi-million dollar business. Using his wealth to support a host of local, national, and international organizations, Rapoport was named by Fortune magazine as one of America's forty most generous philanthropists, unstinting in his support for education, social justice, and liberal political causes. In this memoir, Rapoport recalls a life of hard work and a philosophy of giving that made him a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. He explains how his early experiences of poverty and his youthful acquaintance with Marxists and New Deal economists shaped him into a capitalist with a conscience. Rapoport goes on to describe his liberal activism as a supporter of Democrats from Ralph Yarborough to Tom Daschle to his good friends Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton, an underwriter of the political journal The Texas Observer, a regent of the University of Texas System, a supporter of the state of Israel, and a champion of at-risk students.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent memoir of a unique American.......2007-06-02
Bernard Rapoport is one of a kind for many reasons. He's a resoundingly left-leaning, labor-union-supporting insurance company founder and funder of liberal Democratic candidates and causes down in the heart of Texas, where such a fellow is distinctly unusual. For most of his adult life, he's put his money where his mouth is, even when he had to borrow the money. Now that he has considerable of his own money, he and his wife continue on an even grander scale supporting educational projects here and overseas. .
Rapoport has always been politically active, and for anyone who's lived in Texas 50 years or so, his recounting of friendships and dealings with national and local political figures will bring back many memories. Underlying all this is his story of personal accomplishment in raising himself from financially poor beginnings through business perspicacity and sheer force of personality.
