Very in-depth look at an intensely professional individual.......1999-03-10
'Blondie' will appeal to WWII buffs and also to sailors. Hasler was the original "cockleshell hero". The first half is a difficult read owing to many, many military acronyms. After the war (about midway through) the book picks up speed and becomes quite a bit more enjoyable. The horrible reality of war really comes through, and this is over all a good read. Blondie was a consummate professional who loved adventure. His life is a story worth telling. Floyd Bryant, 9-Mar-99

Book Description
A TALE OF TWO BROTHERS: The Story Of The Wright Brothers is a book that captures the human drama of the Wright brothers' lives. The author views the relationship of these two famous men through the lens of human dynamics. This focus finds the Wright family structure unique for the historical period in which the brothers were raised. Milton Wright, their father, was an ordained minister who was firmly committed to his ministry and the defense of his church's original constitution. But even in his frequent absences to serve the western congregations, he continued to stimulate his children's imaginations through his many descriptive letters. He taught his children to read and write before they attended public school.
Susan Koerner Wright assumed the maternal duties of a nineteenth century woman, plus the total management of their growing family during her husband's frequent absences. Because of her own mechanical abilities, she nurtured her sons' intuitive skills and spatial perceptions.
Both parents seemed to appreciate and encouraged each of their children's unique abilities. When Orville becomes fascinated with printing, Milton Wright persuaded the older brothers to give Orville their unused printing press and he buys the needed type. When Wilbur was recovering from a serious accident and has to forego college, it was Susan who encouraged his self-education.
There emerged from this stimulating family environment two of the most self-motivated and individualist men the world has ever produced. During the time they were working in the printing field and the bicycle repair business, they became infected with the idea that human flight was a possibility. Most people, even many scholars, thought human flight was a pipe dream. Neither brother ever dreamed that they would finally find the solution. At first, they considered their involvement as a hobby, but they soon caught the fever.
Against overwhelming odds, the Wrights succeeded where many experts had failed and some lost their lives. To their lasting credit, the brothers dared to question the wisdom of the experts. They then had the audacity to begin to experiment on their own. Theirs was not a smooth rise to success and glory, but rather it was a treacherous road marked by frequent failure and delay.
When they finally achieved success on that tiny strip of sand jutting out into the Atlantic, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, they were denied the recognition they deserved. Both in America and across the ocean they were accused of being fakes. The first major invention of the twentieth century went unnoticed and unwanted for several years. The brothers enjoyed only the briefest taste of glory before others were claiming their prize.
THE TALE OF TWO BROTHERS is one of the most poignant stories of the twentieth century.

A Lifesaver!!!.......2007-03-11
This has got to be one of the best books ever written! I can't tell you how much it has improved my life. I was in a diet downward spiral. Every day I hated myself more and more because I couldn't stick with a diet. This book has freed me and allowed me to begin to love myself again. I feel better than I have in years. I have started taking better care of myself and I am learning to pay attention to what my body needs. I think anyone who struggles with food, whether their overweight or not, should read this book ASAP. You'll be glad you did.
A completely unique approach to developing more healthy eating patterns.......2006-08-31
This book is designed for chronic dieters, and it takes a unique approach. We've all heard "diets don't work," and these authors, both nutritionists, agree. However, rather than saying that diets don't work, you must learn to eat healthy instead, authors Tribole and Resch say diets don't work, you must learn to EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT. Sounds crazy, doesn't? However, a cornerstone of the theory set forth by the authors is that dieting leads to deprivation, and deprivation leads to binge eating, which produces weight gain, not loss. The authors argue that once people learn to eat intuitively--which includes choosing satisfying foods, recognizing when you are full, realizing the reasons behind why you eat, etc.--most people will attain their natural healthy weight.
Still skeptical? The authors are quite convincing, although their approach is not a weight loss plan per se. They point out that for those who have an unrealistic weight ideal, eating intuitively will probably not help them to lose weight. However, for those who have dieted for years without success (again, the book's main intended audience is chronic dieters), intuitive eating will help them to develop normal eating and exercise patterns, which will in turn naturally lead to a healthy weight.
I found many of the ideas in this book to be quite powerful. For example, even though I'm in a normal weight range, there are countless times that I've told myself unhealthy messages about food and eating, such as thinking I'm "bad" for having something sweet or "good" if I resist doing so. In contrast, the authors suggest that once we give ourselves permission to eat whatever we want (ie, no more "forbidden" foods), we will eventually begin to make more healthy choices naturally. To assist with this process, the authors do offer some general guidelines for healthy eating in the final chapter, but unlike what some other reviewers have suggested, it is NOT a diet plan. In fact, the authors go out of their way to point out that doing things like noting serving sizes and counting fat grams can cause the "diet mentality" to resurface, and so they caution readers that their suggestions are meant as guidelines only, not rules.
Overall, I thought that this book took an interesting, unique approach to healthy eating that I have not seen elsewhere. Not only would it be helpful for chronic dieters, but also it would be useful for those recovering from eating disorders who are re-learning how to eat normally. My only reservation is that for many people, sticking to a true intuitive eating plan might be difficult without the support of a nutritionist or other professional. Otherwise, however, I would highly recommend this book.
no title.......2006-02-24
For me, this was a great book. So important that even before I finished my library copy, I bought my own. To have and reread every day, hopefully for the rest of my life. The authors make it seem so easy, which of course it is not, and that is perhaps a fault, but a small one. And they never do address how you managed to get fat in the first place, which for me was at the age of eight. But I am positive that they are right. Whether I can do it, remains to be seen, as I have spent decades on the diet treadmill, even a fasting program for almost a year. My metabolism is messed up big time. But the authors keep saying, over and over, to accept yourself now, and that is so important. If your body works, and you are basically healthy, and you can do what you want, why beat yourself up if you don't look like Kate Moss? This is something to hold onto in our thin obsessed world. Get rid of the scale, and appreciate the body you have. Get clothes that fit and that are comfortable. That goes a long way towards making you feel better about yourself. This was such a user friendly book, easy to read and follow, and it made such sense. I see myself on almost every page. I intend to read some of it every day, just to center myself. If you have found this book, and are reading this page, you need it. I might also add that there is a terrific bibliography, with lots of ideas for further reading if you are so inclined. I found six more books there that might prove to be helpful.
One of the most important books I've ever read!.......2003-11-04
I didn't buy this book because I wanted to lose weight. I am an athlete who is at an ideal weight, but I was so strict with my eating that I had become obsessed with food. Daily weighing along with counting calories, protien, and carbs consumed a good portion of my days. The need to eat so perfectly inevitably led to uncontrollable binges about once a week. I bought this book because I wanted to lead a more normal life, where food didn't consume my thoughts and define the success or failure of a day. The principles in the book are completely logical and the authors are good to back up their theories with plenty of empirical data. They clearly lay out why it is so crucial to abandon the diet mentality in order to stabilize or lose weight. I now know that no food is off limits anymore and I am becoming more in tune to what my body is telling me it needs. No more binging, weighing or number crunching. Freedom at last!
Trust yourself and life will follow..........2003-10-31
This year I decided to get "healthy". I wanted to implement an exercise program and establish good habits in my early 20s so that they would be with me all my life. I never planned on dieting-it just happened. I didn't even know I was on a diet (or 20!) Dieting is EVERYWHERE. We are a nation obsessed and somewhere along the way we forgot what food is about. I became obsessed with food. I tried Eat Right For Your Type, The Goddess Diet, Slim Fast, Vegetarianism, food combining, I did a juice fast...At first it seemed like a healthy hobby. Then out of no where the binge eating began! And the GUILT. I have never been heavy, but I was utterly brainwashed into having a "fat" mind! This book is completely changing my life. I am no longer concerned about when I will be able to eat next and what I will eat-AS I am eating something else! I no longer binge eat. I actually enjoy being hungry as I know my next meal will taste better-and I allow myself to eat whatever I want (without guilt. And I usually really do Want healthy food, too!). I experience satisfaction with the eating experience. My energy level is MUCH better now that I do not see grains as the enemy. I am not piling protein in my body that I do not need or even want. I eat slowly now, knowing that I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want. I NO LONGER FEEL THE NEED TO CLEAN MY PLATE! But most importantly, I accept myself and TRUST myself! This paradigmn shift has spilled over in other facets of my life as well. I cannot praise this book enough. It accomplishes all this and has a non diet mentality throughout. I do not feel the need to read or recommend another diet (or anti-diet) book along with this-it was good enough for me and has ended my obsession with food. I am so GRatEFUL this book was written-I would be probably "living" a half life if it wasn't...

While Susanna Foo claims to be "North America's Finest Chinese Cook" on the cover of her cookbook, The Zagat Restaurant Guide gives this claim some support by consistently listing Susanna Foo's as one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. Foo is known for both the fine quality of her cooking and for her eclectic approach; recipes in her book, Susanna Foo Chinese Cuisine, demonstrate why this is so--imagine Pineapple Salsa, to be served with dim sum, and Grilled Tuna with Jalapeño Pepper Puree. Even traditional recipes such as black bean sauce are presented according to Foo's taste. Information about techniques and ingredients can be exceptionally interesting, and Foo's personal reminiscences, which are scattered through the book, add to the pleasure of reading.
Book Description
Susanna Foo has been consistently acclaimed for her stunning interpretations of Chinese food and hailed as one of America's best chefs by publications as diverse as Esquire, Food and Wine, and USA Today. In this book, she shares the revolutionary recipes that established her reputation, from Crab Sui Mei with Red Bell Pepper Sauce to Soy-Braised Cornish Hens. Each one relies on straightforward preparation and easily available ingredients, illustrating Foo's belief that good Chinese food is every bit as easy to prepare as Italian food and relies on the same principles of simplicity and freshness.

One of my favorite cookbooks.......2005-11-23
We bought this book after eating in Susanna Foo's Restaurant in Philadelphia, and both the restaurant and the book are fantastic. Every recipe works beautifully, and some have become very regular meals for our family. We have no problems getting the ingredients at our local grocery store. We've found that the subtle flavors and combinations are best if you follow the recipes closely - they have obviously been tested and optimized already.
Great intro to Chinese cooking.......2003-12-06
I bought this book to fill in a gap in my cookbook collection--I had none about Chinese cooking. It was a pleasant surprise to find that many of Susanna Foo's recipes have become standby's at home, for everyday cooking and for special dinners. As others have written, the recipes fuse chinese and french cooking techniques. Although there are occasionally difficult-to-find ingredients, more often than not the author provides substitutes. Favorites are the soy-braised cornish hens (so easy and so flavorful) and the tea-smoked cornish hens. There are plenty of seafood dishes, most served with delectable sauces that could be easily transplanted to poultry or pork dishes.
The writing style is engaging, with reminiscences of dishes the author ate or prepared as a childhood. I love this book !
Fusion plus Tradition.......2001-10-23
So many of my childhood favorites are in this book, which I thought could only be bought and never made by me. Having been to her restaurant several times and college in Philadelphia, I was given her cook book as a present. Being known for fusion cooking, due to her culinary training, I was so suprised at how many traditional chinese recipes are in her book like marbled tea eggs, hot and sour soup, dumplings, various pancakes and really good instructions and diagrams on how to roll the dough, wrap the dumplings, etc. Hats off to Susanna Foo for compiling such a good cook book with interesting antedotes regarding how the various foods invoke her childhood memories, making it an interesting read as well.

The only chineese cookbook to own and use.......2001-01-30
I love to eat Chinese food, but don't cook it, that is, until I got this cookbook. Great intro which you have to read to find how she got to Philly and melded Chinese cuisine with French especially.
Recipes are unique, light with usually one or two unusual items which nowadays are easily found. Great helps such as what to buy, how to use them, etc.
Try as an appetizer "One-hundred-corner crab cakes" or "orange Beef with sun-dried tomatoes" (mouthwatering stuff, this is.) Especially representative is an usual fare which has wowed my guests, "Steamed Crabmeat souffle."
This is a delight of a cookbook, to cook, serve and eat!

Interesting and fun to read........2001-03-27
Interesting little book divided into five sections, frogs and toads, salamanders, turtles, lizards, and snakes. Each section picks a few species (seemingly at random) and concisely discusses their biology, behavior, and how to house and feed them. A few common species and a few exotic species are included in each section. The information provided is useful and the book is well illustrated. It is, however, by no means complete. Many important animals are missing and the information included for the animals represented is basic.
If you're thinking about buying a snake, frog, salamander, lizard or turtle and you don't know which to buy, this book will certainly give you some ideas. What is particularly helpful is that the author warns about which animals are likely to be aggressive and which have special care needs. For example, if you considering buying a turtle, you can browse the pretty pictures and pick out some turtles that you like. Then you can quickly read the text to find which ones are easy to keep and safe to handle. Or, if you have some experience with turtles, you might want to buy one of the more difficult breeds. It will even give you some tips on caring for your new pet.
If you are looking for information about a pet you already have, this probably isn't the book for you. Unless you are lucky, your pet isn't in it. Still, it is an interesting book and you can pick up some facts about reptiles and amphibians if you are so inclined to do so.
Outstanding book!.......1999-05-20
An incredibly interesting book that's easy and fun to read. Some of the material seems to be aimed at beginners but some is for those who are experienced, so just about anybody interested in this subject will enjoy this book. Definitely one of the best--and the photos are also extraordinary.

Customer Reviews:
Love this book so much I bought another for a friend.......2006-04-10
This book has wonderful children's quilts that will mean something to the child. All of the quilts in this book can serve as topics for educational conversation with the child, e.g., the one I call the "shape" quilt. It is a row quilt with different shapes in each row. The quilts are bright and gave me fresh ideas after looking at so many of the 'same old thing' children's quilt books.
The only drawback is that the instructions are not the greatest; but I am an experienced quilter, so that is not a problem for me.
Not the best sorce for ideas.......2006-03-08
This book says it has 18 quilts but what it really has is 6 quilts to make and they show it done in 3 different fabric choices. So 3 X 6 = 18.
I did like the quilts they had in there, it just wasn't as many as I was hoping for.
The problem is that you can't see inside before purchasing.

Best Baking Book Ever!.......2001-01-04
Better Home and Gardens Old-Fashioned Home Baking is the best baking cookbook I've ever bought. Every recipe I've made has been superb...looking and tasting. Recipes are concise and fairly easy to understand. End products are delicious. Also included in the book are tips for making your baked goods look special and fancy for holidays or parties. Hands down, it's a winner for anyone who likes to bake or wants to learn.

This brought me back to my childhood........2006-03-27
This is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in true gardening. The photos are lovely! So many of the plants are used in herbal medicine (read of their history within the pages of this charming book) or are flowers your grandmother had in her garden by the back door.
Katherine has such a terrific knowledge of plants that, without being at all stuffy she can let you know where and how to use them. It's not a dry read at all. Get this book and you won't be disappointed.

This book delves into the history of classic bulbs, ravishing old-garden roses, antique annuals and perennials, heirloom houseplants, and vintage vines. Tips on how to create period floral arrangements and an extensive list of hard-to-find heirloom suppliers make it easy to reintroduce these beloved garden species into a contemporary setting. Keeping vintage flowers available and teaching readers how to grow these heirlooms-this book ensures that neither they and nor their fabulous history will disappear.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting reading for gardeners and historians alike.......2000-05-04
This succinct volume should appeal to more than gardeners looking for a way to add color and charm to their landscapes. Architects and landscapers seeking to create historically accurate gardens will find this book an excellent starting point. For example, they'll discover that grape vines were integral part of 19th-century gardens in the U.S.
This book has several authors, each an expert in his or her field. The topics include Classic Bulbs, Antique Annuals, Old-Fashioned Perennials and Biennials. There's even chapters dedicated to phlox and flower arranging.
The photography and reproduction are wonderful -- some of the bext I've seen in a garden book, especially one that sports such a small price.
Book Description
Each section provides both inspiration and information on a history of herbs, a hands-on gardening reference for indoors and outdoors, and an illustrated listing of 45 individual herbs, each with history and anecdotes. 125 full-color photos.

YOU CAN HANDLE YOUR CHILD'S BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS WITHOUT SHOUTING OR SPANKING
Discipline Without Shouting or Spanking offers effective, practical, nonviolent options for correcting the most common behavior problems of preschoolers. You will learn how to deal with misbehavior including temper tantrums, whining, negativity, sibling rivalry, possessiveness, aggressive behavior, resisting bedtime, playing with food, and many more problems -- without shouting or spanking.
The authors' advice will help you be a more effective parent and discipline your child in a loving yet firm way, without damaging self-esteem or natural curiosity about the world. This easy-to-use text has been formatted like a first-aid manual for handling misbehavior.
Customer Reviews:
Toddler Handbook.......2007-01-04
This is a well thought out handbook for parents of toddler through preschool age. A mother of three boys, only one of which is stil in preschool, I would have liked to have found this book sooner. My boys however have outgrown most of the behaviors described in the book. I would strongly recommend this book for a new parent, but if your child is older than three, I would pass on this one.
Some good ideas..........2006-12-09
This book is divided into behavior problems, such as, "Playing With Food", "Taking Things", "Lying", etc... and then gives you a list of steps to avoid the problem and correct the misbehavior. It also provides "real-life" situations that show how parents applied the approach outlined.
However, the books that I have personally found to be the most useful are the ones that outline approaches that can be applied to every disciplinary problem, such as, "1-2-3 Magic" which still works on my kids after 2.5 years, and "Time-In", which teaches kids to think about their behavior and its consequences, and how to make amends when necessary.
I can see this particular book being useful for trouble shooting specific problems, if other approaches aren't effective, but I didn't feel the need to keep it on my bookshelf and I've passed it on to a neighbor.
Helps Keep your anger level down!.......2006-02-17
This book is loaded with very useful and effective ways to manage behavior problems. The struggles are fewer, and lower level, and no one feels bullied at the end. I never have to use, "because I am the MOMMY, that's why!"
This book really works! Super Nanny must have read it!!.......2005-06-16
I purchased an earlier edition of this book when my first son was a toddler. The method described in this book is straightforward, sensible, logical, and easily accessible in times of need. Following these methods has always worked wonders with my first child, and is presently working beautifully with my second. This book contains advice that is so simple and logical that it can be fully understood by preschool age children, and yet is extremely effective with older children as well. The book is relatively short, and broken down into specific behavior areas, so it is very easy to read, even for a BUSY new mother. I wish my parents would have had this book available to them when I was a child. Beatings and screaming only left me angry and isolated. My children respect me and we have very loving relationships because they understand my rules and they know what happens each time they misbehave. So we have more time for positive interaction.
It usually only takes a few applications of this method to eliminate undesirable behavior. Very seldom, it is still necessary to swat a child on the backside once or twice when all other methods have been exhausted, of course. Spanking as a LAST RESORT, AFTER all the measures advised in this book have been exhausted, is very seldom necessary. I praise the authors and thank them enormously. That this book is still being published in new editions shows that it is an excellent book. I think Super Nanny must have read this book!
It's a good start, but there are better books available.......2005-03-26
The title of this book caught my eye. There are some good ideas in here, and following this book is certainly better than shouting and/or spanking. But, this book fails to deal with the root of misbehavior, and fails to distinguish between genuine misbehavior and behaviors that are simply annoying to adults. They should not be treated in the same way.
A much better book is:
How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk by Faber and Mazlish.
I also recommend The Discipline Book by Sears.
This book has some good ideas, but there are better books. If you're only going to buy one or two books on discipline, buy something else.

Notable American Women of the Past.......2000-05-23
As a teacher of American Literature for almost 20 years and now a librarian in a high school this 3 set volume has been invaluable to students who want to find out about women who contributed to American society. The well known names are profiled but more than that, the more obscure contibutors are documented. An account of valour.......2007-05-26
The true story of true Christians, and Dutch patriots, Diet Eman and Hein Sietsma, and their courageous risk of everything to resist Nazi tyranny and hide thousands of Dutch Jews.
True Christians always love the Jewish people and Israel, and true nationalists are opposed to both Communism and Nazism, both the antithesis of national self-determination.
Diet recounts her own life, and experiences and what she saw and heard, as well as her deep faith in G-D, that guided her in all she did and thought.
Diet recounts her experiences in Scheveningen prison, where she describes how Jewish families, who were caught in hiding, were hauled into the prison, mothers, fathers and children: 'On the nights the guards brought Jews in, we always heard the children crying all through that place. It was bad enough for us to have to suffer through a place, like Scheveningen, but it was terrible to hear those poor innocent children crying.'
It is up to true Christians and righteous gentiles to stand by the State of Israel today, in the struggle for her survival and that of her children, against the monstrous Islamic-extreme leftist hate machine.
Excellent.......2007-03-12
Excellent book. The book is fast paced, exciting and touching.
The risks and sacrifices that the author and her fiance went through for their beliefs and for unkwown people amazed and inspired me. Highly recommended.
Harrowing experience.......2007-01-09
The account of the author and her experiences fighting the German occupation of Holland during WWII is harrowing. It is hard to imagine that any human being can display so mush courage at such a young age.
A Christian at War.......2006-09-29
I have read more than 75 books of this genre depicting this period of history. "What would I have done under the same circumstances?" That is the question I am always asking of myself whilst reading these stories. This is the story of a group of people with the courage of their convictions...Diet's story is inspiring and touching. It illustrates perfectly that the power of prayer is undeniable and when 'all one can do is pray' one has done everything.
exceptional book in several ways.......2006-01-01
Diet Eman was a young dutch woman during WWII in Holland. Her and her fiance were involved in the Dutch resistance movement. They helped Jews find homes/families to hide with in the Dutch countryside. This was a huge undertaking that required much teamwork. (For instance, the families that took in Jews would need extra ration cards to buy more food. Extra ration cards would have to be obtained and delivered to these families.) Diet literally rode hundreds (probably thousands!!) of miles on bicycles during the war coordinating this effort to keep Jews hidden in the countryside.
As Diet tells her story, there are frequent excerpts from the personal diary she kept during the war. And excerpts from postal letters she either sent or received during the war. This helped give the book a very "real" feel...You experience her first hand emotions and thoughts as these events were actually taking place.
Diet had a strong Christian faith. Her spiritual insights are deep and powerful. Her faith sustained her during this troubling time in history.
Diet was eventually caught by the Nazis and spent time in a jail and a concentration camp. She was briefly at the same camp as Corrie TenBoom, author of The Hiding Place. Diet survived, but her beloved fiance died in a concentration camp.
I highly recommend this book. Not only is it an exceptional historical account of life during WWII, but the spiritual (Christian) thoughts in it are very profound. While Diet was living through this horrific time period, the spiritual thoughts she recorded in her diary are incredibly mature. She was so young (early 20's) but was advanced beyond her years with spiritual perception. Her faith influenced her every thought.
