The Autobiography of David Suzuki.......2004-03-18
This is David Suzuki's autobiography. It is certainly interesting reading about his life (in his own words) after having watched his programs so often. He is truly a great man, who in a sensitive, humble and down-to-earth manner had championed the cause of our precious environment. Read this book.

Description:
Information on species- and stage-specific patterns of contaminant accumulation is generally lacking for amphibians, yet such information could provide valuable knowledge on how amphibians interact with contaminants. We assessed concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, and Zn in whole bodies of larval, recently metamorphosed, and adult life stages in Bufo terrestris and Rana sphenocephala from a site that currently receives coal combustion waste (CCW) discharge, a site where CCW was formerly discharged that has undergone natural attenuation for 30 years, and a nearby reference site. For the majority of elements (As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn), concentrations were highest in larvae, but Se and Sr concentrations remained elevated in later life stages, likely because these elements are S and Ca analogs, respectively, and are thus retained throughout structural changes during metamorphosis. Element concentrations were generally higher in B. terrestris than in R. sphenocephala. Concentrations of As, Se, and Sr were up to 11-35 times higher in metamorphs emigrating from CCW-polluted wetlands compared to unpolluted wetlands, suggesting metamorphosed amphibians can transport trace elements from aquatic disposal basins to nearby uncontaminated terrestrial habitats. In addition, anurans utilizing naturally revegetated sites up to 30 years after CCW disposal ceases are exposed to trace elements, although to a lesser degree than sites where CCW is currently discharged.

i absolutely love this book. Kasl shares ways to reaquaint people with joy in simple ways. I always have a smile on my face and in my heart after reading a page or two.
My Bible!!! Can't live without it!!!.......2002-09-19
I bought this book about 7 years ago and its been my Bible
ever since! I read at least one chapter everyday. This book
is so uplifting. Its been a great guidance for me. When Im
feeling blue, I reach for this book. I simply can't live
without this book!!!!
A true treasure!.......2002-03-06
Charlotte Davis Kasl, has hit the nail on the head! Want to change your life for the better? Want to really enjoy your days and learn to get through the rough ones? This book can help. She has thought of everything from finances, to love, to kids to your entire outlook on life. The sections are broken into 101 mini topics explained through anecdotes and therapy techniques. She uses teqhniques from many cultures and religions without pushing any religion on you. Easy to read and comprhend. Read a section a day (If you can put it down afer just one!) and you will feel the difference as you internalise the beauty of true Joy in your life. (Can you tell this is my favorite book?)
Finding Joy really makes sense!.......2001-01-05
I was recently browsing through the local library and wanted to find something "uplifting". The title "Finding Joy" sounded like it would fit the bill, so I checked it out. I was amazed at how each chapter seemed to be written about my situation. Things that I felt & thought in my mind were actually written on paper. At the end of each chapter, there is a section entitled "Excercises for the soul" which are very soul-searching techniques.
The author uses the teachings of Jewish mysticism as a guide on subjects such as "making sense, not excuses" (a big one for me since I am quite a procrastinator!) & "getting your attitude adjusted". Our library allows you to check out a book for three weeks at a time & also renew once by phone. I have had the book for six weeks and hated to part with it, so I am placing an order today through Amazon to purchase it. I feel it is a great reference guide to pick up and read over and over.Daniel I. Schwartz has written a truly insperational book!

Italian by Marriage.......2004-08-27
I just got married and have been cooking Italian for the first time in my life. This book is everything an Italian cookbook should be and more. It is completly meat-free but doesn't skimp on flavor. I have many cookbooks but this one taught me how to make lump-free Polenta on my first try. The Pasta and Lentil soup was so delicious that my full-blooded Italian husband said it would be perfect for a Wedding Celebration. I've just now made the simple dish of carrots cooked in milk with Tarragon and my tastebuds went wild. The easy-to-make recipes are full of mouthwatering flavor combinations that make vegetables taste better than chocolate. Period.
A wonderful collection of delicious recipes.......1999-12-30
This cookbook was given to me by a good friend, and what a find! Several of the recipes in the book, especially the wild mushroom risotto, have made it into our regular menu here at home. The recipes are fairly easy to prepare, and the flavor combinations are delightful. These kinds of recipes are a much better way to eat vegetarian than trying to mimic meat dishes (e.g. garden burgers, etc.) because they are essentially and naturally meat-free. I highly recommend this title.
Tasteful no-meat Italian food treatments.......1999-01-25
I have an affection for this book and found the Kirkus Reviews panning of it altogethr slanted. This is a book for lacto-poulo vegetarians and food lovers who prefer moderation in the intake of foods containing fat over grim abstinence from the delights of cheese, olive oil and egg dishes. Given that, I found della Croce's book augmented my library of Italian cookbooks, including the complete works of Marcella Hazan. While some of the recipes are familiar (Pasta e Fagioli, eggplant parmigiana, broccoli with lemon) many are original and delightful. The fettucine with walnut sauce, spaghettini with uncooked lemon and black olive sauce and the coucous with stewed vegetables and chick-peas, Sicilian-Arab style have become crowd-pleasing staples. The book is attractively illustrated, and Ms. della Croce is a warm, friendly guide. This book does not supplant the works of established guides to the Italian kitchen. But it will beguile both the newcomer and the veteran.

Classic knits.......2006-02-03
I was surprised to find out that this book is 15 years old. The knits are still just as cute and desirable as if they were designed yesterday. I have only knit one of the sweaters so far, but I found the instructions to be excellent. My only criticism is that you have to keep turning back to the front section to see the big color pictures. I would like to see the instructions and the photo together. Other than that, this book is a real good value.
Very Cute.......1999-02-27
I ordered this book for a friend of mine who was having trouble finding knitting books for toddlers in her area stores. When I opened it up and saw all of the elaborate styles I was impressed! If you're just beginning, you can cut down on the amount of colors used or not do all the embroidery and still come up with something pretty fantastic. The cutest baby all-in-ones and booties I've ever laid eyes on!

Fun and informative assay of the maturing American male........1999-01-27
The great thing about this book is that Peter Dorsen writes with a sense of humor. You can tell he's not a traditional, button-down, by-the-book doc. There's lots of advice and information, but it's also fun to read. This would be a terrific book for women, too, if they want to get to know their over-40 guy better. I'm surprised it hasn't become a best seller.
Book Description
Already published in France, Spain and Germany to wide acclaim, this book presents an insider's portrait of Pablo Picasso, the women in his life and the Picasso family. The author, Picasso's grandson Olivier Widmaier-Picasso spoke extensively with relatives, friends, and contemporaries of the artist and discovered unknown information about Picasso's life. Correcting previous portrayals of the artist which have been highly critical of his personal relationships and treatment of women, this book offers a balanced and sensitive account of his life. Olivier Widmaier-Picassowhose grandmother was the artist's muse and lover Marie-Thérèseanswers allegations about everything from the artist's sexuality and relation to money and politics to the feuding over his estate and the author's own handling of the artist's legacy. This compassionate, penetrating biography, which includes never before published family photographs, offers a unique perspective as it explores the double-edged sword that is fame and talent.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Read About Picasso Family and Heirs.......2006-10-01
Finally, a book about Picasso that tells a coherent biographical history and backs up information with references, and all by a family member who evidently did his research (the son of Maya, Marie-Therese's daughter).
The author never knew his grandfather so he had to do his research in order to write such a consice history. My favorite read on Picasso is still Francoise Gilot's "Life with Picasso" but this one is a close second. The Real Family Story is an excellent read on the artist's myriad families and the heirs of Picasso, though none of the other books by family members can be discounted.
The only real slant is that Olivier Widmaier Picasso appears to be closer to the Francoise side of the family than the Olga side of the family (which may be an understatement) but in such an expansive family there are naturally divides.
Importantly, delves into the troublesome estate matters left behind by Picasso, which all heirs seemed to have benefitted after a lot of legal process.
The logical, real deal about the painter.......2005-10-02
Finally, a biography about Picasso written by a family member (his grandson by Marie-Therese Walter)that puts right all the ogre mythology. Yes, Picasso was not an ideal family man. But so much written about him in other biographies deem him almost inhuman. This bio is good because it puts all the facts out there. Good and bad. Widmaier refutes many of the "evil man myths" and gives you a straight view of what the man was really made of. I felt after reading this, a real grasp on this man/legend. A good job, that maybe his Grandfather would have appreciated, even though he was such a private person.
A Love of The Artist For His Mother........2005-08-15
Throughout the ages, poets and philosophers have extolled the virtues of womanhood and motherhood. Pablo Picasso is quoted: "My mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.' Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.
Customer Reviews:
Testimonies from the Kindertransport.......2006-05-18
The testimonies written by the Jewish children of the Kindertransport are very scary - scary because the fear that Hitler systematically used on the German people that began as the erosion of their civil liberties and culminated in Jewish Germans and German Jehovah's Witnesses perishing in concentration camps is the same fear that U.S. president Bush is constantly pushing: "Give me full power to do whatever preemptive act is necessary to keep you safe from whatever I determine is a threat to you".
The testimonies in this collection are very upsetting - a dark sense of dread and the need to not just cry but to bawl one's heart into exhaustion haunt them. Anne Fox and Eva Abraham-Podietz have collected unique stories written by fellow escapees on the Kindertansport to Britain from Hitler's Nazi Germany. The stories are arranged under seven chapter headings: 1) Life Under Hitler, 2) Kristallnacht (Crystal Night), 3)Preparing to Leave, 4) The Journey, 5) Life in England, 6) The War Years, 7) After the War. The seven chapters are preceded by a section subtitled "To the Reader" and followed by an Epilogue. The stories are each followed by an update written by Fox and Abraham-Podietz informing the reader how each child fared in adulthood. Both authors were not yet teenagers when they joined 10,000 other children who escaped to Britain without their parents to end up living with foster parents.
In the foreward, we learn that the British are generally a cold people and not very charitable between themselves compared to other societies (I can testify to that), and many children (they call themselves "the kinder") felt unwanted in their new homes. Some were made to work as servants. When World War II was over, most of the children had no choice but to stay on in Britain because Hitler had wiped out millions of their parents in his concentration camps.
Under Chapter 1) Life under Hitler, Sylvia is the first of the "kinder" to share her account, which is mostly about the "Heil Hitler" salute that everyone did out of fear of being punished otherwise. " 'Mother would not have given the Hitler salute', I confided to Ruth"(p16), wrote Sylvia. In the update, we learn that her parents died in Hitler's concentration camps and her aunt in New York brought her to America where she became a secretary, got married, and became a mother.
Other stories include entries by Ruth, Dorit, Karla, Susie, Vera, Eva, Marta, Kurt, Peter, Marion, Ben & Stefan, Sara, Ernie, Ilse, Trudy, Ina, Klara, Anne, Celia, and Lilly. Their stories are profoundly touching in an unanticipated way - and that is a gross understatement. The photos of the children carrying their belongings such as an occasional violin and waving farewell to their parents - who we know did not survive is just too painful to contemplate. It hurts as much as watching those kids being bombed by Bush at the Baghdad wedding party in "Fahrenheit 9/11" by Michael Moore.
The chapter arrangement of the above stories serves to illustrate the gradual progression of Germany's slide down Hitler's slippery slope to a Nazi nightmare. When the first measure were taken against civil liberties in Germany, they seemed minor and perhaps even reasonable if you bought into the fear-mongering by Hitler. People's rights were taken little by little. Kosher slaughtering of meat was outlawed as were all publications of the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society. Eventually, people were incarcerated without charges just as Bush does today in the USA. Jews were forced to wear the yellow Star of David and Jehovoh's Witnesses wore Purple Triangles. Christians and Jews were Hitler's targets, Muslims are the targets of today's Bushies and neocons.
In the Epilogue we learn of the Kindertransport reunion in 1989 in London, England. Britain is a difficult place for a British Jew or Jewess to grow up - imagine how much more difficult it was for Jewish children who were also GERMAN! But despite the cold British weather and its effects on British behaviour, the British did rescue these children from a despotic madman whose evil is beyond imagination - when you think you know how bad Hitler was, you have reached an awareness equal to one one-thousandth of a percent of his evil. We can never know or understand that amount of evil.
Thomas Paine wrote "War is the gambling table of governments, citizens the dupes of the game". Just as the Civil War was not started by elites for anything but money, yet it was won by the common man fighting against slavery - so was the Second World War started over money but was won by the common man stopping Hitler. On behalf of my Step-Grandfather Hugh "Skeets" Beatty (RIP), may the Almighty forgive his shortcomings and reward his effort at Normandy, amen. [...]
FASCINATING HISTORY.......2003-04-23
This was an illuminating and evocative book. Anyone interested in this topic should also read "Escape Via Siberia" and "The Uprooted" by Dorit Whiteman. Whiteman's books -- which expertly weave gripping personal accounts with historical context -- explore how survivors of the kindertransport and other Holocaust horrors coped with the legacy of their harrowing ordeals as adults. Whiteman is an expert in the field and some of her material was used in the movie, "Into the Arms of Strangers."
War through a child's eyes.......2000-11-25
As the generation of World War II survivors is all-too quickly disappearing, today's children are running out of opportunities to connect with those who survived the war. Ten Thousand Children is a series of true anecdotes told by the children who escaped the Holocaust on the Kindertransport. The stories of the evacuated children come to life with emotion and clarity. Readers will be amazed at the courage of the children involved and the hardships they faced as they were separated from their families and sent to live in a foreign land. Each child tells his or her story in first person narrative, then the story is followed by an update which tells about the child's life after the war. Captioned photographs illustrate every story. The book is divided into seven chapters, each beginning with a news-like article giving background information to support the stories included in the chapter. The stories and articles are short enough to be read easily by children, and relevant vocabulary words are defined in reader-friendly terms in the margins. This book will help children understand the lessons which must not be forgotten from World War II. The cruel realities of war and intolerance leap from the pages of each story. Readers will be touched by those children from long ago. All those who read this book will walk away with a deeper understanding of the Kindertransport children and an appreciation for the freedoms we must cherish today.
