Book Description
This is the story of one car—a 1911 Stevens-Duryea Model Y "Big Six"—and its famous owner Percival Lowell, the American astronomer best known for his studies of Mars and mathematical prediction of the discovery of Pluto. The narrative follows the vehicle, a product of Frank Duryea—of the pioneering Duryea brothers—through its time with Lowell and through subsequent owners to its present status as a moving landmark of history.
This automobile made its debut in Flagstaff, which was at that time a frontier logging and cow town of Arizona with unpaved streets in what was not yet even one of the United States. It survived the years from 1911 when delivered to Lowell, through his death in 1916, through occasional use until 1938 when it was "abandoned," then through sixty subsequent years of neglect before being restored to its original form and condition and finally returning to Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill overlooking Flagstaff.
Many of the important developments in the early history of the gasoline-powered automobile are traced to establish the context in which this remarkable vehicle was created. The community in which the Duryea brothers labored, in short lived teamwork, and their role in the evolution of the automobile industry are discussed. The text also provides an intimate look at the life of one of America's most important astronomers.

Good food and good information.......2006-08-25
So far we've tried 3 of the recipes. My husband has high blood pressure so we are working on our eating, controlling the amount of sodium in his diet, excercise and better sleep. This is a fun cookbook with lots of recipes, I look forward to trying more!

In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Crepes and Omelets, starts with a brief introduction of basic crepe techniques and recipes and the necessary equipment. A similar introduction is provided at the beginning of the section dealing with omelets. Following the two introductions are recipes for crepe and omelet toppings and fillings ranging from savory to sweet. Special chapters at the end of the book are dedicated to baked and microwaved omelets and omelets from around the world. Classics such as banana nut waffles, bacon and mushroom omelet, blini, butterscotch topping, chocolate sauce, crepes suzette, cherry and almond crepes, cheese omelet, ham, cheese and mushroom topping, Italian country frittata, potato pancakes, raspberry sauce topping, strawberry rum waffles and Viennese crepes appear next to unique recipes such as apricot meringue crepes, chestnut crepes, fresh lemon topping, honey orange topping, Jamaican banana topping, shrimp and mushroom omelet, smoked fish and egg crepes, and smoked salmon and lemon topping.

Great Starting Place for Melt and Pour .......2005-06-01
Although this has a slick commercial look about it (I tend to doubt the usefulness of commercial stuff!), this is a great beginner's book for learning and doing Melt and Pour soapmaking.
This was the first book I bought, so perhaps there is some sentimental value for me. But it has clear written and graphic instructions on melt and pour soaping, along with useful information such as a guide to additives, basic information about setting up your work area, selecting and preparing your molds, determining the right temperature (thermometers are not so necessary in melt and pour, so you're going by 'behavior' and look of the glycerin). A troubleshooting page is included -- even with melt and pour, there will be problems! She has small sections (sometimes just a page) on mastering fragances, color theories, and other useful bits throughout the book.
Please note that in my reviews, recipes are very secondary to me. In looking at and using soapmaking books, I'm looking for information on how to (create swirls, mix colors or scents in better, use additives, package, wrap, sell). Recipes give me ideas for recipes to make on my own.
I like the variety she offers -- very brief bits on all kinds of soap making - loaf, french milled soaps, commemorative soaps, tube (cane) soaps, leftover soaps (she calls this shelter soap, which makes me wince a bit), soaps with small toys in them, bath salts, soap tassels (invented by Sandy Maine, see my review of one of her books), gemstoneskitchen soap and more).
Her recipes are written as instructions, telling you what you will learn. About 30 recipes, ranging in level of difficulty from one (moldless soap, saving face soap, tropical indulgence soap are examples) to five (Kaila's happy to be bar). She has a recipes for a Victorian bridesmade cake soap (difficulty level four) that looks good enough to eat. Most are in the one to three difficulty level.
Four stars, though, not five. This book is missing some information, and its sources in the back are incomplete. You will need a lot more detailed information for learning how to develop your own recipes. And I wasn't impressed by the picture, on the rainbow loaf soap page, of food coloring bottles -- food coloring is inexpensive, handy and can be used, but it will not last. No note is made of that in this section, though it really should be noted for beginners.
A basic book for beginners -- and fun recipes to try and to add to your own collection.
Great Recipes and information.......2003-06-19
I really like this book and when I bought this book, I bought another M&P book. All I can say is I like the other one better. I like that there is a picture for each recipe but what seems to be lacking here is what fragrance to use at least on some of the recipes. I understand that some things should be left to the imagination but when it comes to recipes that I am trying to copy, I want to be exact and to kind of feel what she feels when the soap is used for the 1st time. There is no way I could make cake without knowing the full list of ingredients and I feel the same applies here. Overall this is a great book and a good read.

I think I have every M&P book out there. I wish I'd bought this one first, because it's the only one you need. Great book!
Lovely & fun soap........2002-04-28
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The projects were creative, informative, and fun. The illustrations were great. The basics of soap crafting were presented. What I liked most of all was the author's love for this particular craft coming through clearly. With some other soapmaking books, I learned but I didn't really start to think about creating new soap designs. I felt this author was sharing her works and encouraging me to try my own. She was positively infectious. I really appreciated that. I wrote down ideas for no less than five new soap designs while I was reading the last part of her book. I say, thanks Ms. Westerman! This is just the type of book we need.

INNER GARDENING is a remarkable book in a number of ways. First of all, Diane Dreher's work addresses the whole reader in a way other books cannot because of their self-imposed limitations of scope. INNER GARDENING is a book full of interesting useful information on cultivating one's land. So, it is good for the VICTORY GARDEN crowd. It is also an insightful original piece of scholarship concerned with themes of nature in Western and Eastern cultures. So, it is right up the alley of someone who reads Rebecca Bushnell. Most important to me, the book communicates meaning through its own organizational structure. The collection begins and ends in the springtime. I was pleasantly surprised at how clearly Dreher writes on the topics of origins and fruitions. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.
A Beautiful Patch Work Quilt.......2001-09-16
"Inner Gardening" is like a beautiful patch work quilt. Dr. Dreher weaves together her considerable learning about gardening, Eastern philosophy, Renaissance history and literature into an inspirational book that you will consult over and over again. Each chapter corresponds to a month of the year with detailed instructions on specific gardening tasks. The author then reflects on the inner meaning of these tasks and how the disciplined performance of them contributes to a richer life. I highly recommend it to you.
Review of Inner Gardening.......2001-08-06
I'm new to gardening and I found this book interesting. There are many different reasons why I'm interested in gardening. I like the plants but more importantly I wanted to garden myself. I wanted to grow something inside. The author bridges these two types of gardening nicely. She infuses the chapters with a variety of different angles on gardening. In some sections she brings in the botanical view. There's also the historical folklore perspective. She encourages risk and self-exploration by communicating some of the her own experiences in Aikido as well as her thoughts when she's gardening. Then there's, for lack of a better term, the self-workbook questions. For example pg 98 - "Something is always growing in our gardens, whether we cultivate it or not." Similar to The Artists Way, the author asks the reader to explore their life. I don't think the psychological and spiritual benefits of gardening would be so valued in our culture if the activity weren't time tested. At the same time, readers need coaching to uncover or find their ways. The author guides the reader by asking them to reflect on their lives. These questions encouraged me to start gardening and exploring within my own life as well. I encourage others to pick up this book and begin growing new ideas within the soil of their own minds. I would recommend the book to many because it's multidimensional and it challenges me to grow.

Coming out - twice.......2004-11-29
This collection of essays by the author of Dancing on Tisha B'av, Winter Eyes, not to mention the Nick Hoffman mystery series, focuses on his twin comings-out, as a Jew and as a gay man. The child of Holocaust survivors, Raphael was raised in a secular Jewish household, and it was not until he was an adult that he began to explore and embrace his religion. In the process, he met Gersh, whom he would also explore and embrace ;-)) (sorry, irresistable!).
In an excellent essay, "Empty Memory? Gays in Holocaust Literature", Raphael addresses the question of gays in Nazi Germany, and has it right, I think, when he says that it is wrong to ignore or belittle the persecution of gays, but that it is also wrong, and historically inaccurate, to not understand the difference between the treatment of gays and the treatment of Jews, and the policy differences between them.
He does not allow himself, however, to separate his Jewishness and his gayness. He mentions speaking at a Jewish community center, along with a lesbian who is also the child of survivors, and being asked by other children of survivors why they "had to be gay" that evening! They could not understand his and Beck's "multiple identities as Jews, children of survivors, and homosexuals".
Here he says something important for all communities of faith, who ground their hatred of gays in the phrase, "It's religion". "Lies are lies. Hatred is hatred. As Jews we know what it sounds and feels and smells and tastes like. " When, at Yad Vashem's Hall of Remembrance, a ceremony to remember the gay and lesbian Jews who died in the Holocaust is interrupted by right-wing demonstrators calling the group "evil" and accusing them of blasphemy, this is no less hatred than the the demonization of Jews as Christ-killers, and the anti-Semitism of the Pat Buchanans of the world.
Not everything is this book is so intense, though. "Okemos, Michigan" is a heart-warming essay, describing how he and Gersh bought a house together, and how the house became a home. A humorous essay, "Selling Was Never My Line", will be appreciated by any author who has ever done a book tour.
