Book Description
David, Betsy, and Sammy Berman were nine, six, and four years old in May 1943 when the U.S. Army sent their father, Dr. Reuben Berman, to Europe. Over the next two and a half years, the children regularly gathered around their mother, Isabel, in their Minneapolis home while she typed exactly what they wanted to say to their father. This collection of more than 340 letters, selected from more than a thousand exchanged by the Berman family via V-mail, captures the anxiety and loss that children experienced when their fathers left for war. "Letters were a key to winning the Second World War. This extraordinary book views the war from the perspective of three children who composed hundreds of letters to their father stationed in Europe. Dear Poppa tells not only of the children's wartime toys, movies, and radio shows, but also their participation in paper drives, victory gardens, and war bond campaigns, their dreams and nightmares, and their deep longing for Poppa's safe return. His letters home are in this volume, too, making more poignant the role of letters as morale-builders in wartime."-William M. Tuttle, Jr., author of Daddy's Gone to War

Book Description
Decision Science and Technology is a compilation of chapters written in honor of a remarkable man, Ward Edwards. Among Ward's many contributions are two significant accomplishments, either of which would have been enough for a very distinguished career. First, Ward is the founder of behavioral decision theory. This interdisciplinary discipline addresses the question of how people actually confront decisions, as opposed to the question of how they should make decisions. Second, Ward laid the groundwork for sound normative systems by noticing which tasks humans can do well and which tasks computers should perform. This volume, organized into five parts, reflects those accomplishments and more.
The book is divided into four sections: `Behavioral Decision Theory' examines theoretical descriptions and empirical findings about human decision making. `Decision Analysis' examines topics in decision analysis.`Decision in Society' explores issues in societal decision making. The final section, `Historical Notes', provides some historical perspectives on the development of the decision theory. Within these sections, major, multi-disciplinary scholars in decision theory have written chapters exploring some very bold themes in the field, as an examination of the book's contents will show.
The main reason for the health of the Decision Analysis field is its close links between theory and applications that have characterized it over the years. In this volume, the chapters by Barron and Barrett; Fishburn; Fryback; Keeney; Moreno, Pericchi, and Kadane; Howard; Phillips; Slovic and Gregory; Winkler; and, above all, von Winterfeldt focus on those links. Decision science originally developed out of concern with real decision problems; and applied work, such as is represented in this volume, will help the field to remain strong.

lives up to its promise.......2006-07-31
The only book of its kind, and following its advice did wonders to undo my underweight struggles. Thank you, Dr. Rueben!
"Dr. David Reuben's Quick Weight-Gain Program" Book Review.......2003-09-15
I've tried to research the problem of being underweight, and there's just not alot of material out there. In a world full of obese people, it's just a problem that no one really takes seriously, including the medical profession. Doctors aren't even sure what medication to give to underweight patients. Dr. Reuben describes "issues" that thin people have that no one really thinks (or cares) about - like when your rear doesn't have enough padding and you can feel your bones jutting out in a chair. He doesn't just talk about the problem though - he actually gives recipes to help you gain weight. I thought this was a nice touch. I thought it was nice that someone wrote about the problem, period. I've gained 16 lbs since purchasing the book - not just by following every recipe, but knowing which foods I should concentrate on really helped.
works.......2002-10-08
Prior to buying this book I was 6'4" 165 lbs. I've tried many different things to gain weight (I once got up to 180 through weight lifting and protein shakes, but came back down). It's hard unless you make eating more a habit and know how to do it, which this book explains. After just about two months with this books help, I've gained 17 pounds and I now weigh 182 (and climbing). The one shortcoming of the book is that it should include a basic exercise section, so that the new weight doesn't just go to your gut, which it probably will if you don't work out some. Overall, definitely a good buy which will provide you with real help in gaining weight. It includes mealplans and tips to get more calories, which is the strongest area of the book.
I packed the pounds!.......2001-11-19
I have been UNUSUALLY stick-thin all my life, and I heard all the "Oh you should be happy you can eat and eat and not gain weight, " and"I wish I had your metabolism." Well being close to 30 with no womanly figure, no hips, no butt, no thighs, no chest, is not something to be envious of.
This books really did help me to understand that yes, I was eating, but I had to just be more focused on picking the foods I could get the most calories from.
I gained the most weight I have been my whole life, unfortunately I lost it as fast as I gained it. I gave my book to a friend, and am ordering another copy for myself, I know if it worked once, it can work again..but you have to really work at maintaining it...like ANY weight program.
The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because he doesnt go into much detail about how to maintain, but I did gain 8 pounds within one month..which is a record for me!
Very good book for the seriously underweight.......2000-09-16
I don't believe this book turns you into a glutton!! I am very underweight, and need 20 pounds on me. Nothing else has helped me. Not "eating healthy" or eating "empty calories" it doesn;t encourage you to be a gluttonous pig. it says about the recipes "eat as much as you can" thats not a glutton to me!!! Eating as much as you can till you feel full. Apparently some of these people in the reviews are not that seriously uderweight from what I get. No other book has shown me how tp pack in the calories and get the most out of gaining weight. And it doesn;t encourage eating junk food. It even recommeds certain vegeatbles to eat during the six-month-period. If your seriously underwieght, this book is for you.
Another thing: it will not turn "skinny people" into fat people, if you're underweight, its not gonna happen. Anyone who is underweight will not look back and say "gee I wish I was 20 pounds underweight again. That is not what I call the good ol days. I think this book is very helpful.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Info!.......2002-12-02
I was underweight almost all my life. I tried a few things that I thought would help me gain weight, but never seemed to help. I became to think sometimes that gaining weight was impossible. Then there were times that I thought it might be possible to actually gain weight if I really put a lot of effort. I was confused and people told me all sort of information. I had no idea what would be the first step or how to start. I knew I didn't have some kind of disease although I bet some people thought I did. I felt so incomplete and disappointed at myself for being so skinny. People made fun of me and when I was a kid I was picked on just for being smaller.
It was not until I read Dr. David Reuben's Weight-Gain book when I finally began to understand what it takes to really gain weight. I was searching for "Weight gain" in Amazon to get some information with desperation. I came across this book as one of the listings and thought I'd give it a try. I read this book carefully and thoroughly and felt positive about trying to gain weight this time. There were a lot of things that I never knew before in this book. However, there were some things that were obvious in gaining weight such as what the previous reviewer commented about the book recommending to find food high in fat, but this reviewer is also misunderstanding Dr.Reuben.
Dr.Reuben mentions in Chapter 7 about the fact that it takes years and years or decades of eating massive amounts of fat to produce even the slightest hazard to your health. The book assumes that you'll gain weight in a few months. The risk of death and serious disease as an underweight is far greater than that of even a lifetime of a high-fat diet. It took me less than a year to gain about 35 pounds. I'm very proud of myself and I thank Dr. David Reuben a lot. I feel as if this genius man saved my life.
Not very helpful at all!.......2002-07-14
In a nut shell, this book says to look at nutrition labels and eat any and all things high in fat. Bacon, whole milk, red meat, etc. Sounds like the way to achieve heart disease rather than gain weight. I was very disappointed!

Nice easy gifts.......2006-12-13
These Dips (and also the Rubs) make great hostess or buddy gifts - Great way to use those too-small-for-anything-else foodsaver bags without having to use the suction, I can just use the sealer and I have great little packets. Print some nice color sticker labels and stuff them with couple cooking utensils in a dip bowl or oven mitt. Buying the spices in bulk makes these VERY cost effective for a nice, thoughtful gift on a tight budget.
It was great!.......2006-06-30
The book was exactly what I was looking for. We give gifts to many people at church and these are an inexpensive easy way to say weère thinking of you.
Mexican Fiesta Dip, Awesome!.......2004-12-17
My fiance and I are saving for our wedding, so this year we are using Gifts in a Bag - Dips to make our Christmas gifts for firends and family. I "test marketed" the Mexican Fiesta Dip to a group of her friends one evening and the bowl was empty when everyone left. I guess no-one liked it.
We set up packets of three different dips and a bag of chips for each giftee! We chose the Herb Dip, Garlic and Chive Dip and the Mexican Fiesta Dip.
The great thing about this series of books is that you can make each gift and personalize it. We made personalized tags with our pictures and funny names for the dips, like: Kiss Me Quick Garlic and Chive Dip. I think that if the reception to the dips is anything like the test groups reaction then we've got another winner with the Gifts in a... Series. (Last year we made Gifts in a Jar - Cookie mixes for Christmas. Those went over really well.)
Wonderful recipes - well received by friends and family.......2004-08-26
I made the Mexican Fiesta Dip, Oniony Party Dip, and Fruit Dip mixes for 80 people as gifts for Christmas last year. All of the receipes were very well received by friends and family. They were very easy to make and delicious. My only criticism is that some of the ingredients were difficult to find. I had difficulty finding beef bouillon granules and I had to special order candied ginger through a restaurant supplier.
I recommend the book. It's great for those who like cooking and dislike processed, store-bought foods.

Customer Reviews:
Funny and unbelievably true!.......2001-06-09
I picked up this book to browse through at an attorney's office while my husband and I were waiting to close on our home loan. Ten minutes is all the time I had to skim through it, however, that was enough to know that I must get this book for 2 family members for Christmas or birthday. It is truly a cat lover's book.
Laugh Out Loud -- NOT!.......2000-05-22
I do love my cats too much but I don't need a non-cat person to tell me that. I couldn't quite put a finger on it at first until I realized the obvoious: Ronnie Sellers is not a cat person. That much I derived from the "about the author" page. He does not even profess to be a cat lover at all. This book is but a compilation of anecdotes from cat lovers from all over. Sellers says the idea of doing this book came from a cat person he met in a book shop. That woman should have been the proper author of this handbook. Jennifer Reinhardt could probably do it being a cat person herself. What remarkable talent! I found her illustrations funnier and more effective than the text that accompanied it. Each illustration captured what every cat owner (or cat owned human) has probably gone through. I give her illustrations five stars. I was thinking of returning this book but I decided to keep it anyway if only for Ms. Reinhardt's hilarious drawings.

Book Description
"I love my cats," writes Sharon Gannon in this important book that promotes health and wellness for your companion animals. Yet, she says, "years after mad cow disease was linked to the cannabilistic feeding of cows to cows, rendered animals are still routinely used in some pet food and commercial feed. Cows, pigs, chickens, dogs and cats are innocently eating each other."
Cats and Dogs Are People Too! sheds light on the commercial pet food industry and offers healthy alternatives. It explores how you can keep your animals healthy and eating nutritiously balanced food through diet and supplements without being alarmist or emptying your wallet.
Sharon also explores the complex emotional lives of our cats and dogs and argues that the love they show to us needs to be met with equal responsibility on our part.

Customer Reviews:
Yarn Requirements.......2006-12-07
The yarn requirements are in the very back of the book and are listed in ounces with the standard of 70 yards/ounce. Not terribly easy for beginners. Also most of the patterns are made with very few or only one size.
More hand-holding needed..........2006-05-31
I agree with the other ladies....a bit frustrated by this book as I consider myself an intermediate knitter but I still need to know quantities when it comes to buying yarn for a project and numbers on the graphs are a simple thing for the authors to include, one less step for us knitters. This book was a gift, and I am returning it, just not enough inspirational ideas for me. Gonna try something called Holiday Knits.
Nice but what about the yarn?.......2006-03-20
This book has some beautifull knits in it, and I don't think it's too complicated for the average knitter. However, the yarn they use for all the projects is some specially made yarn just for them? I think? Because I can't find it to order it anywhere, and they don't really give any equivalents other than the weight (worsted, DK, etc.) The colors they use are so beautifull that it would have been nice to be able to match them exactly.
Beautiful patterns, however...........2005-07-06
At first glance this book is wonderful- beautiful patterns- clear instuctions. I was excited about using up scraps for some of the patterns. All projects use handspun yarn- wonderful since I am a spinner. BEWARE!!! There are NO yardage requirements for any of the projects period! No weights of finished projects or anything other than your best guess! This is very frustrating for the sweaters (multiple sizes)- who wants to guess, spend all the time knitting then run out of yarn?? Yardage requirements are really a must- as professional designers they should know better. This is definitely NOT a beginner book for this reason- book description is VERY misleading.
Great book - for intarsia.......2005-04-18
Only buy this book if you are interested in knitting complicated intarsia charts with no row numbers. Some of the projects are attractive, but you will need to buy about eighteen different colors of yarn for them.

Ingenious Dialouge and Poingancy leads to Revelations.......1999-04-04
Sherry Glaser's, Family Secrets is one of the most profound peices of literature I have ever encountered. Through memoirs, and characterization through monologues, she purges her soul to the readers. Each Character comes alive, and gives you insight into Sherry Glaser's soul and life. What makes her characters so real, is that they are real. They come as a combination of her relatives, and her personal feelings and desires. Through writing from her heart, Sherry has accomplished giving life to the stage, and producing a family history that everyone, in some way can relate too. Her poignancy can bring anyone to their own revelations, and to tears. She crisply and bluntly defines what it is to feel, and what it is to accept what you were born into ;That which is your family.. And all the secrets that come along with it. (It is also a fabulous performance peice, and I would like to thank the author for writing such a stunning peice of literature)
