This biography is compiled from family papers unknown to historians at the time of his last biography. This remarkable man not only had a huge personality but also a colorful life and many adventures on the high seas. Digby was a founding member of the Royal Society and was a prominent scientist during this explosive scientific period, contributing to medicine, physics, mathematics, and botany.

With a simple self-test, readers of this book can determine their brain chemistry out of six types-and then learn how to balance that type with a unique diet and vitamin supplement regimen that nourishes them mentally and emotionally. It's a new way to relieve stress, conquer depression, and maximize individual strengths-and gives a whole new meaning to the term "brain food."
Customer Reviews:
One of the most helpful books for using nutritional supplements.......2006-06-25
I am usually skeptical about books that have questionnaires about your type. I rarely fit. However, to my surprise, after taking this questionnaire, when I read the description of my type, it was like reading my autobiography. Some of my quirky dietary needs and also the supplements were mentioned. I was amazed and was very pleased to be able to use the book to further enhance my health condition. Plus, it was wonderful to finally be understood by a health care practitioner. Dr. Lesser's understanding of people is very keen and adept. The holistic overview provided, covering lifestyle, emotions, diet, and supplements, is like a breath of fresh air. The book is also very well written, easy to follow and understand. I recommend this book to those who are wishing to fine tune their supplement programs or simply don't know what to take. Also, it may be very helpful to individuals who are puzzled by mental or emotional symptoms.
Christian Bluster turned me off from very 1st sentence.......2005-02-11
VERY hard to get past the very first sentence of this guy's book. "First thank the Lord God Almighty!!", etc. etc.
I thought maybe I had accidentally bought 'The Twisted Brain Chemistry of the Religious Zealot - Plan".
There was nothing in the advertising/book description about getting preached to. Give me a break.
A wise doctor/author MIGHT realize he alienates the majority of customers on the Earth (um, who are not Christian) with his attitude. But then, he might not think all the non-Christ-worshippers are even "worthy" of his wisdom.
I tried to get past his zealous declarations, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth.
I returned the book for a full refund.
Very interesting - definitely worth reading !.......2003-07-01
By answering some questions, the author determines which of six brain chemistry types you are. Based on this type and your symptoms, the author recommends dietary, SUPPLEMENTAL, and lifestyle changes to help w/ stress, mode swings and depression.
I really like the fact that the author explains WHY he recommends certain supplements for certain types and HOW they work, which is based on Orthomolecular Medicine = describes the practice of preventing and treating disease by providing the body with optimal amounts of substances which are natural to the body.
This is an inexpensive book well worth reading. I will probably try some of the supplements after I do some more reading.

Brooklyn is a melting pot unto itself. Settled by the Dutch and then home to waves of immigrants, including the Irish, Jews, Scandinavians, Italians, Germans, Poles, Hispanics, African Americans, Greeks, and Middle Easterners, the borough is rich in culinary history. Lauding that history, Lyn Stallworth and Rod Kennedy Jr.'s The Brooklyn Cookbook explores in 250 recipes Brooklyn's "hometown" cooking. Replete with nostalgic photos, it also chronicles, in the words of Brooklynites themselves, a larger cultural heritage. Readers who enjoy social-culinary history, and those who relish the diverse, nurturing dishes of everyday urban life, will embrace the book.
Dividing its recipes and recollections among chapters such as Resorts and Neighborhoods, Nationalities, and Brewed, Made, Sold, and Served in Brooklyn, the book reminds us constantly that food is inseparable from the people who prepare and eat it. Here are Mrs. Stahl's Potato Cocktail Knishes, which she sold on the Boardwalk during the Depression; Lundy's Manhattan Clam Chowder, the peerless brew of Brooklyn's famed Sheepshead Bay seafood house; Dee Dee Daily's Pigeon Peas and Rice, a Caribbean-Black American specialty; and Joe Romanelli's mamma's Pizza Rustica, prepared while "pappa and my brothers would sit around drinking homebrew and playing pinochle." The recipes work for all cooks, but it is the stories behind them--"An Italian-American Dinner in 1960," for example, or "A Pail of Beer and Sauerbraten"--that make the book a true culinary treasure. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Brooklyn has been called the fourth largest city in America, and it is the Borough's claim that one out of every seven United States citizens has roots here. Brooklyn is also America's most celebrated hometown. Everybody knows where it is (across that bridge), and almost everybody has an opinion about it: don't the people say "boid" and "toity-toid," and act argumentative, brassy, and sassy? Sure they do -- at least some of them. They also say what they mean in other tongues, for groups from all over the world call Brooklyn home.
Brooklynites are fiercely loyal to neighborhood, family, and the food that nourishes them, body and soul. That is what this book celebrates ... I can hear you asking, What is Brooklyn food? What makes it special? No one claims that we have the kind of food that characterizes a region, such as Boston baked beans, Maryland crab cakes, or Philadelphia cheese steak. What defines our food is, in short, attitude and memory. The Brooklyn attitude is, "You respect me, I'll respect you; but believe me -- my neighborhood, and my food. is best." Memory ensures that the stories of good times, and the food that made them so, are passed along to younger family members.
The neighborhoods are distinct, but they are ever changing. Where most immigrants once came largely from Europe, they now arrive from the Caribbean and Asia. Formerly Scandinavian Bay Ridge is now home to Greeks, Chinese, and the fastest-growing group of Middle Easterners anywhere. Brooklyn is by no means all blue collar (it never was); Wall Streeters and other executive types appreciate the wonderful houses and tree-lined streets. They have their foodways, too.
Thomas Wolfe, a writer who once lived in Brooklyn, was wrong: you can go home again, home to the Brooklyn that lives in the rich memories and cherished recipes of the sons and daughters of the Borough. As we who live on the eastern side of the Brooklyn Bridge say, come on over!
to feeding the Dodgers and the Polar Bear swimmers who brave the icy waters of the Atlantic all winter -- with wonderful nostalgic photographs. Family, tradition, and neighborhood are at the heart of Brooklyn life. And it is the food -- reflected in the kinds of recipes gathered here -- that expresses these values.

Brooklyn Cookbook.......2005-09-10
One of the best books cookbook or otherwise I have bought in a very long time. I read it cover to cover and enjoyed every page.
I grew up in Queens, the other boroughs need to get with it and create their own cookbooks. Pictures, stories and great recipes.
I Want to Relive Brooklyn!.......2001-12-19
My youth was spent in Cleveland, Ohio with excellent family cooks that made their own noodles, doughnuts, Christmas cookies, and superb roast pork-sauerkraut dinners. When, as a cook book collector, I began reading this book, I was transferred to the melting pot of America, back to my French/German background of cooking traditions. When I would "come up for air", I was almost sad to return to my present day setting as the Brooklyn neighborhoods and traditions warmed my heart. This is a beautiful slice of another part of the ethnic mix of America when people shared customs with their children. I wanted to move to Brooklyn back to those days as beautifully delineated in the Brooklyn Cookbook. Most of the recipes are ridiculous, like the thought of hanging something in a cheesecloth off the back porch made me appreciate my family culiunary traditions. It's a history book filled with love and amazing, old-fashioned recipes. We'd never make them today so don't buy it strictly for the recipes! It's Brooklyn during a lovely time in America, and I would love to have been there! Madge Bruner

Fantastic recipes/bad typist.......2001-05-22
This book has the most fabulous, genuine ethnic specialties, and it is a real window into the heart and soul of these cultures that inhabit Brooklyn. Make sure that the book you purchase is a second edition or later, at least that is the word.
A Nostalgic Walk Through My Borough.......2000-09-13
In addition to the fact that the recipes work and are delicious, the best thing about this book was that it traced the ethnic roots of the many diverse cultures that made Brooklyn a true melting pot. I grew up in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill and that book brought me back home for a little while longer. Reading the stories that accompanied each of the recipes, I was again transported to the experiences and landmarks of my childhood and that of my parents - football weddings, the Botanical Garden, Junior's, Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor,Ebinger's Bakery, Bamonte's Restaurant, the Garden Room at Abraham and Straus, weekend picnics at Crestwood Lake. I could almost hear Aunt Jennie and my mother arguing over whose cooking most closely resembled their mother's (it was my mother, although Aunt Jennie wielded a mean fusilli rod!!) More importantly, I found myself immersed again in the sense of family and community that are my home borough - a sense that transcends every ethnic background. It was fun, poignant and tasty! I have given this book to friends as gifts over the past few years and everyone loved it. Only one criticism. In the section on Cammereri's Bakery, with the references to the movie Moonstruck, Gilberto Godoy (the real life bakery owner), did not play Ronnie Cammereri. Nicolas Cage played Ronnie, one of the starring roles. Given the popularity of the movie, that was probably the one item that should have been absolutely correct.

Store-bought patterns usually need a bit of finessing to take them from a general size to an individual's perfect fit. Sandra Betzina, the host of HGTV's Sew Perfect, knows exactly how to alter a pattern to compensate for just about every figure flaw or to accommodate any figure type. Fast Fit is packed with dozens of clear analyses of all the "problem areas"--from broad back to thin neck, sloping shoulders to large upper arms, big tummy to bowed legs--and step-by-step solutions to turn a standard pattern into something that corrects the fit in each area.
The introductory section explains how to take proper measurements, choose the right size, and approach the pattern-alteration process. Illustrations of altered patterns show precisely how to cut apart and reposition the pattern pieces, although some details may need a bit of interpretation since the patterns are shown quite small. One other drawback is that, easy as these fixes may generally be, they're not necessarily fast from the start, since Betzina recommends that you first make a fitting shell to highlight problem areas. (But once you've figured these out you can then apply the information to many patterns.) All in all, this is a good reference, and unless you know how to draft your own patterns from scratch, you'll probably benefit from Betzina's help. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Sandra Betzina's tried and true and easy to do techniques for creating clothes that fit and flatter your unique shape can be found here. Betzina hits the mark every time by offering innovative, simple, and straightforward approaches to sewing. Each fitting solution is illustrated with a step-by-step description of the pattern alteration and a photo of the correctly altered pattern. Fast Fit simplifies the usually complex process of fitting. The 200 color photos and 52 drawings add to make this book an essential resource for every sewing reference library.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and helpful.......2007-08-06
I really like the way this book is put together. You can find any area that you want to alter the pattern for easily and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. It is great for anyone needing to alter patterns for themselves or others.
A great INTRODUCTION to pattern adjustments for beginners.......2007-07-19
Okay, I love this book! I'm brand-new to garment sewing and the first pattern I sewed was such a disaster that it went straight to Goodwill!! The best thing about Fast Fit is that it is not intimidating and it gives a good overview of how to figure out what exactly your particular fitting problems are. I actually liked the cartoon photos, because they are by nature exaggerated and it made it very easy to tell where to look for garment wrinkles in the mirror to see if that was an issue for me. I discovered that I have big [...] (well okay, this wasn't a total surprise!) so I shouldn't use the full bust measurement to pick a pattern size, also that I need to make adjustments for a long torso and for my square and broad shoulders. I agree it's not the end-all book on the subject, but it's a good starting point for a beginner like me.
almost excellent.......2007-06-08
a quick reference book to correct patterns. I helps also to correct a few of skinny ladies' imperfections, which was quite a surprise in a world that thinks that round forms are a problem and too many bones showing are beauty!
I am absolutely happy of this book!
Ready-to-Wear fix-it.......2007-03-09
With the exception of her wrap knit top pattern, I'm not a fan of Sandra Betzina's patterns. They're just not my style. They're a bit dated and frankly aren't figure flattering. This book is a crystal clear exception. For those who prefer ready-made patterns who don't have a perfect figure, this is the book for you. I still have several patterns that I love and make my own alterations to them. I can't wait to try out her versions that are much simpler and easy to follow. I also sew for my mother and I expect that I will be making fewer alterations to the final product using the techniques in this book. Try and ignore the not-so-flattering color pictures that accompany each figure problem or you'll find yourself looking in the mirror a lot and asking, "do I really look like that"?
Never sew without it!.......2006-08-01
This is by far my favorite pattern fitting book. Every pattern you sew must be fitted--and differently for every person you sew for. Every fitting solution I have tried from this book turns out great. Each fitting solution in this book is given in one-paragraph summary form (the "Fast Fit") for the extremely experienced tailor, and then given in simple, numbered steps for the very beginner. In each fitting solution Ms. Betzina makes an extra effort to find the simplest modification that affects the fewest pieces of the pattern, unlike some alteration books that have you shredding the pattern into small pieces. She even gives you the sequence in which to make your modifications.
I often refer to her ease charts that tell how many inches each area of a garment should measure beyond the body measurement. She includes suggestions for how to modify knit patterns for woven fabric (i.e. where to add extra ease to make up for the loss of stretch). She directs you through taking body measurements, altering a fitting shell, making measurements on the flat pattern, comparing your pattern to clothes in your closet and making a pretest garment. Throughout the book there are little windows with helpful fitting tips, e.g. "To make length adjustments, alter both above and below the knee--not just at the pants bottom--to preserve the integrity of the pants or skirt style." There are also little workshop sections thoughout the book with special features, like "Adding Pleats," "Duplicating Pants You Love," "Creating a Princess Seam" (on a pattern where there was none), and "Sleeve Swap" for using sleeve designs from other patterns.
Most of the book is composed of specific fitting problems (like "Large Upper Arms," "Round Upper Back," "Rounded Body," "Thick or Thin Neck," "Small Waist," "Uneven Shoulders"), how to identify the problem and then 2 or 3 well-illustrated pages with step-by-step solutions for altering the pattern. My favorite is Ms. Betzina's adjustment for narrow shoulders which is simple and perfect--it adjusts the shoulders and raises the underarms and does not change the sleeve.
I can't say enough good things about this book, so I'll add a few more. The book is published with a sturdy hardcover and a spiral spine so it lays flat on the table so you can easily refer to it as you work. There is plenty of white space for your own notations or for post-its. There is a comprehensive index and even a list of the patterns Sandra wears in her photos that appear throughout the book. As I make each adjustment I actually learn the logic behind it and add it to my knowledge for the future. This book is the perfect link to grow from being an amateur sewer to being a tailor without a lot of effort.
Every sewer who wants their garments to fit should have this book on their sewing table. Well Done Sandra Betzina!

a complete guide to disciplining your preschooler.......2000-06-23
I have found the examples in this book very helpful. they relate to day to day life experiences. there are very positive methods of disciplining your children, ways that do not include spanking etc. the answers in this books answer directly to the everyday /normal problems that especially mothers encounter. i borrowed it from the library but i would like to have a personal copy for myself.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
