Unreadable by the layman.......2003-03-25

This book is far too dense to be read by anyone (like me) without a thorough background of recent Chinese history and politics. Even though I am comfortable with pinyin, no way could I keep straight the constant barrage of names zipping by. No explanation is ever given for various Chinese political terms, many of which were not familiar to me. And there is no historical narrative present to unite the material and keep it interesting.

If you are just an average joe/joan like me who wants to know more about China, don't waste your 28 bucks on this book.

Best book on the Deng Xiapoing era that I have found to date.......2001-01-09

This book, written by one of Hu Yaobang's staff, shows a very different picture of the players during this period of time than in books penned by western China Watchers. While Deng appears to have truly been interested in political as well as economic reforms, the hardliner coalition in the Chinese Communist Party was able to use his paranoia of personal attacks against him to veer him away from Hu Yaobang's progressive programs. Had he been able to see through the machinations of the hardliners, China might have been farther along in its modernization than it is.

I think the most interest aspect of this book is how it portrays Hu's successor, Zhao Ziyang. Western authors portray Zhao as a reformer. However, Ruan Ming shows us a schemer that is more interested in pushing Deng to the wayside and garnering full authority for himself and his "new elite". In 1989, the West saw a tearful Zhao supposedly working in the interests of the student protestors, symapthizing with their demands for democracy and reform. However, Ruan Ming shows us that this was a merely a tactic in his ongoing struggle to build power for himself within the party.

Overall, I think this book should be required reading for anyone interested in the inner workings of China's government. For once we have an account from a former member of China's government. I feel his account has painted a picture of China's key political players stripped of their masks. We are given an excellent example of how divided China's government is and how that relates to China's ability to develop into a "First World" Power in the future.

Wonderful Book.......2006-11-11

This is a wonderful book. It is informative (information on best oils, etc.), has an enticing range of recipes (from appetizers to entrees to desserts), and is beautifully photographed. Of three books I purchased on deep-fryer cooking, this is my favorite. Those beautiful photographs certainly lure one in.

Great recipes but lacking in info.......2006-02-06

I bought this book hoping to get a better understanding of how to cook with a turkey fryer, and got some good recipes in the process. Despite what has been previously posted, nearly half of the 160 recipes are for main courses. I was also unbothered by the self-promotion, having been forwarned. Besides you could easily substitute another seasoning or marinade if you didn't want or couldn't find the author's.

My major disappointment was that there was next to nothing unique to using a turkey fryer, save one page on actually frying a turkey. I was more interested in using this appliance to cook fish and chicken for large groups at church and other places. While it had plenty of recipes for fish, chicken, fries, funnel cakes, etc., it didn't even include such basic info as how much oil to use for these recipes (surely not the five gallons required for a turkey.) I would have liked to have know what advantages this appliance would have over a regular fryer. Would adding extra oil allow me to cook more than four pieces of fish at one time? I still have no idea.

With a title like "The Ultimate Turkey Fryer Book," I expected more, although having bought it for about $5.00 including postage on Amazon's used section, I got what I paid for.

Excellent Restaurant Favorites Recipes!.......2004-02-23

One star off for the author touting his own rubs and marinades. Aside from that, this is one of the best cookbooks I've seen for deep frying in general - especially if you love onion blooms and begneits. The turkey frying instructions are very safety-oriented and we got great results. Every recipe is carefully given for the best breading and frying technique for the particular food. Our family has passed around one copy of this book for several months now while waiting to buy our own copies. Highly recomended!

Big Advertisement...don't waste your money..........2003-12-12

I was expecting a book with good turkey recipes with marinades and rubs, but instead it is recipes that you need to buy the authors own marinades and rubs. Evidently this guy started the Cajun Injector marinades and seasoning and the recipes say things like, use one jar of our marinade and one can of our seasoning and use our injector. There are a grand total of 9 turkey recipes in a book that has 192 pages. All the other recipes are for different side dishes and some desserts. Don't waste your money on this book. It was a big dissappointment.

Every horse-owner, and especially those who aspire to train horses, should read this book from cover to cover and keep it handy by your nightstand!

It's a "must-read" if you really want to progress as a rider and become one with your horse. My guess is that far too many people buy bits because they look pretty without ever giving thought to the type of mouthpiece, length of shank, etc. If you dream of a truly responsive horse, then you must learn the mechanics of a bit!

A priviledge to have been involved!.......2002-07-26

I've been very proud of Bits And Bridles by Dr Bennett and Betsy Lynch, and how well it's been received by the equine community. I use the words "proud of" because it was my priviledge to design and layout the book for publication.

I have been a horsewoman for 30 years, and I was impressed with the manuscript from the first time I read it. I will be the first to acknowledge that I do not know everything about horses or tack, but I personally could not disagree with a single statement in the book. I learned a great deal as well, during the design process. I have recommended (or given) this book to most of my friends and acquaintances in the horse industry. As a horsewoman, as far as I am concerned Dr. Bennett and Ms. Lynch are the foremost authorities on the science of bitting. While I never had the opportunity to meet them while designing their book, I am honored to have been part of the process.

This book is the most comprehensive book I have found regarding bits and their effect on the horse and his performance. It is extremely comprehensive, including information on how conformation, bit, bridle, horse health, rider, etc. affect the horse's performance. It covers all types of bits, from snaffles to spades, as well as bitless options (mechanical hackamore and traditional hackamore). It is extremely well-written and features beautiful pictures.

Most importantly, it has helped me understand how my bit and related equipment affect my horse's performance. I found this information very useful as I am currently transitioning out of the snaffle, and I now have a better understanding of what is happening physically and mentally with my horse.

I highly recommend this book to both english and western riders. The book does lean towards the western rider, but the english discipline is also completely covered.

A fabulous book for the horse owner and/or trainer..........2001-03-02

This book is just what I've been looking for. It's a huge reference on the science of bitting for horses, and covers both English and Western bits and techniques. It's filled with tons of clear color photographs showing the various types of bits available out there, and long discussions about the whys and wherefores of choosing the proper bit for your horse.

A Very Special Book for Horselovers and Horse Profesionals.......2000-10-29

Although it's true that when I was a girl, I did a lot of western-style riding and read every horse story ever written, I'm a far cry from a horse expert. In fact, back surgery twenty-five years ago, removed me permanently from the saddle.

A person who knows that I continue to have a deep appreciation for animals, horses in particular, who also knows my walls are covered with high quality photographs, and who is aware that I make my living as a writer perhaps realized that "Bits and Bridles" by Bennett and Lynch might feed all of these predilictions, and so he gave me the book as a gift. He couldn't have been more right.

The book is extraordinarily well written by authors who are highly knowedgable and humane and who consider both the horse and the rider in relationship to the all the information they impart on bits, bridles, and their relationship to the opimum horse-care and horse-riding experience.

I, who will probably never need to put Dr. Bennett's and Ms. Lynch's "best practices" into place and who,in fact, could not have cared less about what was in a horses mouth or around his head during my years as a young equestrian, was impressed by the clarity and communication impact of writing that made even me realize the critical importance of the proper hardware to both the horse and his care-taker/rider. The writing was suitably and quite beautifully augmented by outstanding, full color horse-photography.

I was a little dissapointed.......2002-07-01

I have quite a few of Cheri Huber's books and really love them. I was really looking forward to getting this book when I found out I was pregnant, so perhaps my expectations were too high, and I am familiar enough with Huber's basic message for it too feel like, well regurgitation is too strong and negative a word. But I felt like, oh, this again, I've already read this. I wish the book would have had more stories about actual parents, what their frustrations were, and how Huber's 'method' worked for them, what it resulted in, not so much to have solutions to copy, but to help illustrate the principle more. I liked the format of Huber's other books better, wish that this one was a little longer and meatier.

But! I'm not a parent yet, I will have to reread it when its 3 am and I am exhausted and the baby is screaming and I'm feeling really bad, then maybe my review would be drastically different!

UPDATE!!

I now have 2 kids and recently reread this book. Lack of meatiness is good, i don't have time for too many words. I still would like more personal stories. One of the pleasures of parenting is sharing stories. The basic message of the book is good. I never knew how incredibly angry I could get until I had kids.

The first volume, Foul Perfection, contained thematic essays and writings about other artists; this collection concentrates on Kelley's own work, ranging from texts in "voices" that grew out of scripts for performance pieces to expository critical and autobiographical writings.

Minor Histories organizes Kelley's writings into five sections. This steely account of a childhood on the run, first from the Nazis and then as a refugee in postwar Europe, serves as a fitting memorial to the author, who died in December 1996, shortly before the book was published. Magda Denes settled in America and became a psychoanalyst, which may explain her total lack of sentimentality about her youthful self. The fierce emotions of childhood--exacerbated in this case by the danger she faced as a Jew in fascist Hungary--have seldom been better portrayed.

Ann Frank's diary redux.......2007-10-18

This book is a Hungarian version of Ann Frank's Diary. It shows the world of a persecuted young Jewish girl through her own eyes. But it's also much more of an adventure story - and less introspective - than Ann Frank's Diary - and the heroine survived. It artfully portrays the family tensions - which, aside the extraordinary circumstances, were in a sense ordinary: yet they are beautifully and vividly portrayed. The author was obviously a character of great steel inside. Having myself lived many years in Hungary, the places, names etc. were all familiar which made it doubly interesting. A must for anyone seriously interested in Hungary.

Magda Denes was five years old, in 1939, when her editor father abruptly abandoned his family, transferring all his assets to the United States.
The family was left with nothing.
Persecuted and then hunted, Magda was determined not to give way to despair (as she was taken around to different places of hiding and had to hide under floorboards, in an oven, and in a cellar) . She lost her brother Ivan, who was a rescuer for the Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair. The Zionists rescued many Jews from the Nazis, and were the backbone of Jewish resistance to Nazism.
What results is a colourful classic of the sruggle for life in dangerous and frightening days of death, written with wry humour and biting wit.
You will grow to understand, sympathize with and love Magda as you follow her story.
Today influential voices are calling for an end to the State of Israel (which was in many cases built by holocaust survivors), which would certainly lead to a second holocaust aginst the Jews living there.
It is up to us to prevent a second holocaust from occuring.
To prevent a situation where Jewish children will be murdered and hunted, by fully supporting Israel in her struggle to survive and fighting anti-Israel prejudice.

This is one of the most moving accounts of that time that I have ever read. I admire the courage of the writer to recount it, I admire the fierceness of that little girl, so many years ago. Its haunting beauty stays with me.

Magda's story grips you from the start - full of horrifyingly vivid memories told in a straightforward fashion, it examines several years of a Hungarian child's life during and after WWII. Her relationship with her brother and cousin is so intense that your heart will ache for all three children. At the book's conclusion, although you know that Magda will be okay (obviously, if she wrote the autobiography later) but you itch to find out more about this incredibly resillient, intelligent young lady.
