Book Description

From "I Shall Return" to "Old Soldiers Never Die," General MacArthur's phraseology invariably captured an audience's attention. The MacArthur persona may be familiar to many Americans more because of his oratory than because of his military deeds. Covering both his martial and his political oratory, this book provides a balanced, full-length study of MacArthur's oratorical accomplishments and their impact. Part I is a critical analysis of MacArthur and his speeches, while Part II contains the texts of the addresses discussed. In their analysis, the authors avoid extremes of praise or blame. The highlight of the book is its account of MacArthur's rhetoric persuading Army and Navy chiefs to undertake the Inchon landing, arguably his finest hour. When MacArthur challenged Truman, taking policy differences to Congress, his rhetoric enabled more than one congressman to see deity in the general. Duffy and Carpenter analyze well the measured cadences of that speech as well as the platitudes of the keynote speech at the 1952 Republican National Convention. "If 'Old Soldiers Never Die' polished his halo, the convention address tarnished it. This book captures both the brilliant flashes and the arrogant stupidities of the man." (Quoted from the foreword by Robert P. Newman)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A gem for speech teachers/students.......2005-01-04

This unique book takes apart MacArthur's rhetorical effectiveness--in some cases, almost word by word, sentence by sentence. As a college speech teacher who often played tapes of MacArthur for my students to illustrate strategoes for speaking memorably and effectively, I found this book a goldmine of insight. OBVIOUSLY, it's not an "introduction" to MacArthur or meant to be! The previous review reminds me of a kid's report that he went to the ballgame and hated the hotdogs!

1 out of 5 stars Missed the Boat.......2002-11-11

MacArthur was a military genius and a charismatic leader with a fascinating life retold by many a historian. This work fouses on a single aspect of his life and while doing so thoroughly, does so rather boringly. It is analagous to writing a work about Mark Twain and focusing on how he dressed.

Book Description

Tarnished Idol is the first serious or scholarly biography of William T. G. Morton, the self-trained Boston dentist who is credited with demonstrating to the medical profession in 1846 the efficacy of sulfuric ether in allaying the pain of surgery. It is also the first detailed analysis of the "ether controversy," which grew out of Morton's association with the physician-chemist Charles T. Jackson, who claimed to have given the dentist the vital clues that led to his success. The controversy arose after Morton patented the discovery and attempted, over Jackson's protestations, to reap a fortune from the controlled use of ether in surgery and dentistry. As a result, Morton spent much of the remainder of his life unsuccessfully trying to convince Congress that he was the discoverer of anesthesia in the expectation of receiving a large cash reward. Of the four book-length biographies of Morton previously published, two, by Benjamin Perley Poore (1856) and Nathan P. Rice (1859), were undertaken with Morton's blessing and collaboration to help him justify his claim and cannot be considered as impartial and as much more than promotional literature. Two more recent ones, by Rachel Baker (1946) and Grace Steele Woodward (1962), are semi-fictional popular accounts that rely overly on the Rice biography for their orientation and facts. Tarnished Idol does not depict Morton heroically, as the other accounts do. Through exhaustive research in genealogical and land registry records as well as unpublished correspondence and manuscript sources, by continual reference to the contemporary medical press, and through detailed examinations of Congressional testimony and debate, Mr. Wolfe presents a much different picture of Morton's life and involvement in the anesthesia story than previously reported. Such evidence has enabled him to clearly show that William T. G. Morton was little more than an opportunist with only slight scientific knowledge and possessed of a highly flawed character, whose main goal in life was the accumulation of money, no matter how gained. From his boyhood wanderings in the Midwest in pursuit of a business career that featured forging, swindling and thievery, crimes that on at least two occasions nearly resulted in his apprehension and imprisonment, on to the street-fighting tactics he employed during his several appeals to Congress, his mindset never changed. Tarnished Idol furnishes ample proof that Morton's personality and character deficiencies conditioned him to be totally unworthy and ill-prepared for the role he was to play when, by some odd twist of fate, he was chosen to help usher in one of the greatest advances in all of medicine; so that time and again his errors of judgment and ill-conceived decisions resulted in disappointment, heartbreak and ultimately tragedy for himself and for many of those with whom he interacted. In addition to examining Morton's claim and all of the counterclaims to the discovery of anesthesia (Horace Wells, Jackson, Crawford W. Long, etc.), Tarnished Idol serves up a rich slice of American history in the antebellum era, savored by glimpses of many outstanding personalities who trod the American scene of that period: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Richard Henry Dana, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William Seward, Stephen Douglas, Edward Everett, Jefferson Davis, and more. It also raises some thought-provoking questions about the rewards of medical discovery and the ethics of attempting to profit too greatly from it. Much of the information in Tarnished Idol relating to Morton's life and the ether discovery and controversy appears here for the first time. This momentous work will surely stand as one of the most important analyses and chronicles of both a fascinating and controversial life and a significant episode in American history and achievement, arguably America's first great contribution to medicine.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Jaundiced but Useful History.......2005-04-14

I purchased Tarnished Idol partly because I had written a little on the "ether war" for one of my own books, and partly because I live near the site where Crawford Long (1815-1878) practiced medicine and, in 1842, was the first to use ether for surgical anesthesia--antedating the Boston group but unfortunately failing to publish his discovery. I already had some inkling of Morton's dubious character, but little did I realize how shockingly nefarious was his past until I read Wolfe's exposé. Meticulously researched and exhaustively documented, this book will long stand as the definitive treatise on Morton's part in the ether war. It thoroughly redresses the historical injustices of past, highly biased Morton biographies.

That said, Tarnished Idol strikes me as a flawed work. It seems overburdened with minutiae of peripheral interest, such as the dates and dollar amounts of scores of real estate transactions in which Morton had no personal involvement. Such information could have been relegated to the end notes for those few readers who may have found it relevant. A few such facts do substantiate Wolfe's point, but the sheer number of them make dense and enervating reading and detract from an otherwise interesting narrative.

The book is also extraordinarily repetitious, retelling at tedious length stories that have already been told in earlier pages. Its ponderous 535-page core narrative probably could have been one-third shorter and more readable if it had less repetition and if peripheral facts had been placed in the end notes (which already amount to another 93 pages).

More seriously, the book fails in objectivity. Wolfe's stated purpose in the afterword is to avoid sensationalism ("which he abhors") and to "let the evidence speak for itself." This he fails to do. Wolfe spares no opportunity to step beyond the facts and launch his own assault on Morton's character, often based on little more than an unsubstantiated assumption, like slanderous gossip.

For example, while discussing an incoherent speech that Morton gave in Cincinnati in 1866, Wolfe presumes on no evidence whatsoever that Morton's audience must have thought he was drunk at the time (p. 478). He speculates that "His strange antics could be attributed to overindulgence in strong drink" (p. 481), yet he admits in the next line that despite all his exhaustive research, he could find no evidence that Morton ever abused alcohol. Entire, libelous paragraphs could have been omitted which do nothing to advance the story, but serve only to besmirch Morton's character on the basis of Wolfe's unsubstantiated suspicions. Wolfe comes across in places like a gossipy neighbor who assumes a man of eccentric character to be a drunkard, simply for lack of any less sensational and interesting an explanation.

Wolfe paints Morton's demise and death in the most unfavorable terms conceivable, but takes equal pains to cast a favorable light on the death of Morton's rival, Charles Jackson. He clearly admires Horace Wells, and perhaps for this reason glosses over the circumstances of Wells's death: the commission of suicide while being held in jail for assaulting two prostitutes. I feel sure that if Morton had died under such circumstances, Wolfe would have painted the most lurid picture possible.

While this book is a useful history of a fascinating subject, it fails as a model of objective scholarship. If the earlier panegyrics on Morton erred in the direction of idolizing him, Wolfe errs in the opposite direction, at least bordering on gratuitous character assassination. His writing is the opposite of gilding a lily: it is taking a tarnished idol and slathering on yet more tarnish of the author's own invention.

5 out of 5 stars L-Carnitine and the Heart.......2007-01-06

This book is written in laypersons language. It is a companion to the book The Sinatra Solution- Metabolic Cardiology. Must have booklet if you are struggling with CHF or heart disease. My husband followed the nutritional suppliment regime and his quality of life has improved by leaps and bounds.

5 out of 5 stars A cardiologist tells how to keep yourself healthy........2002-10-31

Cardiologist, Dr.Stephen Sinatra, is best know for his excellent book The Coenzyme Q10 Phenomenon which discusses in detail the role of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in maintaining a strong, healthy heart. While CoQ10 is indeed essential for heart health so is the less well known nutrient L-carnitine. L-carnitine is so important to our bodies -- especially our hearts -- that our bodies manufacture it every day. Unfortunately, however, many people don't manufacture enough L-carnitine to maintain optimum health and some people manufacture so little L-carnitine that their heart muscles become severly weakened for lack of it. Fortunately, L-carnitine is readily available as a nutritional supplement so that anyone who is deficient in this important nutrient can remedy this deficiency by taking supplemental L-carnitine. For people who are deficient in L-carnitine, supplementation can significantly improve their health, and for those who are severly deficienct it can even save their lives. All of this is discussed by Dr. Sinatra in highly-readable terms in this excellent book. Incidentally, L-carnitine not only helps keep our hearts healthy and gives us energy it also helps us burn fat and thus can contribute to weight loss. All health conscious people would do well to read this important book.

5 out of 5 stars L-Carnitine & exercise go together.......2000-07-29

Like his other works, Sinatra once again blends good, solid informaiton with an easy to understand style. The information he sets forth gives much credence to our need to supplement in our defense against the effects of the toxins we have dumped into our environment. As our lives get more stressful, our bodies - especially our heart - need supplements that aren't in high enough quantities in the foods we eat. Sinatra explains the necessity of L-Carnitine in maintaining healthy heart funciton. It is an advantageous supplement for exercise buffs and vital for those of us who don't exercise as much as we ought to. We are especially the ones who need to buy (and read!)Sinatra's books.

Myrtle Allen's Cooking at Balymaloe House, first published in 1990 and now reissued, is a modern classic. Written by the proprietor and chef of Ireland's most famous guesthouse, the book presents a farm-fresh cuisine miles removed from the common notion of Irish cooking as savorless or indelicate. Most especially, it offers the voice, recollections, and culinary wisdom of a woman who has seen and understood much since she and her husband bought Balymaloe House in 1947. Cooks of all kinds will delight in Allen's observations (of her refusal to put carrots in a traditional Irish stew: "As this is a folk dish, I feel that the common practice carries its own authority") and hasten to try such recipes as Lettuce and Mint Soup, Baked Rainbow Trout in Spinach Sauce, and Beef with Stout.

Chapters explore soups and starters through breads, desserts, and drinks, and offer 100 or so accessible recipes for everyday and special-occasion dining. Present are traditional Irish favorites, including Dingle pies (a spiced mutton dish), Colcannon (potatoes mashed with cabbage), and brown soda bread, as well as the likes of Danish Liver Paté, Mussels with Mayonnaise, and Turnedos with Mushrooms. Readers with a sweet tooth will want to try Allen's Almond Meringue Gâteau with Chocolate and Rum Cream and Blackberry Sorbet, and an exemplary trifle featuring almonds, cherries, and angelica. Illustrated with color photos throughout, the book is a cook's treasure with delightful, sometimes provocative thought. --Arthur Boehm

      Book Description

Welcome back to Ballymaloe! When it was originally published ten years ago, Myrtle Allen's Cooking at Ballymaloe House was hailed as an instant classic. Legions of Irish-Americans, tourists familiar with the guest house, and gourmets intrigued by an oft-neglected cuisine clamored for this groundbreaking cookbook devoted to traditional Irish dishes. Easy yet elegant recipes for Irish stew, batter-fried fish filets, mutton pies, colcannon, apple cake, and Ballymaloe's trademark brown bread did not disappoint. Now, in a completely redesigned edition, Stewart, Tabori & Chang is proud to bring this heirloom collection of recipes into the twenty-first century.

Ballymaloe House evokes a time and place when summer meant freshly squeezed lemonade and sorbet made of plump blackberries picked right from the brambles; when breakfast was a multi-course meal to be savored, from the stone-ground oatmeal to the buttery scones to the robust sausages; when the making of plum pudding, months in advance, signaled the beginning of the Christmas season. This tranquil way of life still exists at County Cork's legendary countryside inn, where proprietress and master chef Myrtle Allen presides over a kitchen that prepares seasonal dishes from the incomparably fresh local produce.

In chapters ranging from soups and starters to desserts and drinks, the 100 recipes in Myrtle Allen's Cooking at Ballymaloe House have been specially selected and adapted for the American home. Mrs. Allen introduces each one in her own charming prose, and her witty descriptions bring Ballymaloe to life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Irish Memoir and Cookbook. Buy It........2006-02-19

`Myrtle Allen's Cooking at Ballymaloe House' by Myrtle Allen is a really great collection of typically Irish recipes from a very personal point of view. In a sense, this book has as much or more in common with the great Savannah family restaurant book ` Mrs. Wilkes' Boardinghouse Cookbook' than it does with the average collection of Irish recipes. Not only are both books about local restaurant / hotels with a national reputation, they are also both books of incredibly simple recipes.

On the matter of the personal material, Myrtle Allen's book is far superior than the volume done in Mrs. Wilkes' name, since we are certain that all the anecdotes are first person memories, written by Ms. Allen herself.

The appearance of this book may give one the impression that it is not much more than a book length advertisment for the restaurant and Inn created by Ms. Allen and her husband and enhanced with the cooking school started by her daughter-in-law, Darina Allen and son, Tim Allen. Having seen a few such books, I can assure you it is not such a book. The extent to which it invites you to want to visit Ballymaloe House in County Cork is based entirely on a genuine feeling of dedication to hospitality, culinary arts, and natural attraction of the Irish landscape.

Not that Ballymaloe House needs much promotion. It is easily the best known rural hospitality hot spot in Ireland. I have seen Darina Allen on at least two different Food Network shows plus prominent mentions in `Martha Stewart Living'. So, it is the book which benefits from the preexisting reputation of the Inn, restaurant, and cooking school rather than the other way around.

Reading this book gives me the same kind of epithanies I experienced when I visited Germany and discovered that in the land which bred the dachshund dog, it was the long haired variety which was much more common on the streets in the Rhineland than the far more practical short haired variety which would have been more suitable for its original use as a badger hunter. My epithany with this book is the fact that contrary to conventional wisdom in the United States, it is not white flour soda bread which is the traditional Irish bread, but a brown (whole wheat) soda bread which is actually commonly served in Ireland, at least in Cork and at Ballymaloe restaurant(s).

For a book retailing for $27.50 with an advertised 100 recipes, this is an exceptionally well designed and photographed book. Of course, photogenetic Ireland has a lot to do with this, but the book takes full advantage of the Emerald Isle's photo opps.

Returning to the comparison with Mrs. Wilkes' book on her Savannah establishment, the recipes in this book and that are all remarkably simple, but touch some very interesting territory in their simplicity. The first little delight is the recipe for a `tomato ring', moulded from a variation on a tomato juice recipe, by adding gelatin and leaving out water and olive oil. There may be some recipes which do involve some unfamiliar procedures such as that very French technique of making a garnish of hard boiled egg yolks by pushing them through a strainer. This may strike one as tedious, until you so it once or twice and appreciate the great effect it has on the dish and your diners' appreciation of the dish. So, while everything here is simple, there may be a few things which do not strike you as easy or familiar.

Sometimes, the titles for some recipes may be misleading to our American eyes, as with the recipe for `billy's french dressing' which is much more like a true French vinaigrette than it is like that mysteriously salmon colored preparation we knew so well in the supermarket. And yet, it has its own distinctly Irish touches, including watercress, which is actually the original shamrock, displaced later by clover.

I am impressed with page after page of really simple recipes, most with relatively few ingredients and simple preparation steps. The average American amateur cook may find a few ingredients which are hard to find at the local megamart, such as lovage or nettles. There are also a few vaguely inexact expressions of ingredient types, such as `mild wine vinegar'. This is ambiguous on two counts. First, does it mean a mild taste? Second, does it mean low acidity? If the latter, then the very best may be rice wine vinegar. White wine vinegar would be a clear mistake, as its acidity is higher than red wine vinegar, although it may be misconstrued, by being light in color, as being milder than red wine vinegar.

But, I am happy to say all measurements have been made in U.S. friendly terms. Everything is just as exact as it has to be, but no more.

In my search for the very best Irish cookbook, this one ranks high among those I have seen already. You will not be disappointed if you pick this book to represent Ireland in a working collection of international cookbooks.

Prominent in myth and legend, the hummingbird is revered for its jewel-like colors and legendary aeronautical skills: it can speed as fast as thirty miles an hour, fly straight up, sideways or backwards, or even hover like a helicopter. Some say the 319 species of hummingbirds that range over South and North America are more highly evolved than any other birds. Without question, theirs is a fascinating natural history.

Photojournalist Toops details that history with a lively discussion of courtship, nesting, and territorial and migratory behaviors. In particular, she emphasizes eight species of hummingbirds seen regularly in the United States.

Hummingbirds: Jewels in Flight includes chapters on landscaping to attract hummingbirds, practical suggestions for selecting and maintaining feeders, and the best locales to find hummingbirds. In addition, a section of hummingbird legends is included.

5 out of 5 stars Answered all my hummingbird questions-and then some!.......2006-09-06

With it's beautiful, extremely close-up color photos, this book about hummingbirds looks like a coffee table book. But I was very surprised and pleased upon reading the text that this is really a very serious book that will answer literally any hummingbird question you might have. Some of the questions I had about hummingbirds were: do hummingbirds eat anything but nectar? why do we only have ruby-throated hummingbirds east of the Rocky Mountains? how old do hummingbirds live to be? do all hummingbirds migrate? do male hummingbirds aid in raising the babies? do they migrate in flocks? Not only are all these questions and many more answered, there was a chapter about migration that started with a baby hummingbird born in northern New York state, and followed him to his winter home in Argentina. I was amazed at how quickly the tiny bird could make it from NY to VA, and then, the suspense of how he could possibly fly across the Gulf of Mexico- obviously no place to rest, and no food available. If, like me, you have had long unanswered questions about hummingbirds, this is the ideal book. I would think it would be great to read parts of this book and look at the beautiful pictures with older children, too.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reference of the life of hummer, great phots.......1999-09-06

This is an essential reference on the life of hummingbirds. Over 100 beautiful color photos show many species of these elegant birds eating, resting, & in mid-flight.

The book starts out with the author's personal experiences with hummingbirds. It then explains the birds' history, classification, distribution, & habitat, comparing the various types of hummingbirds. How they fly, what & how they eat, mating rituals & nest building are then detailed. Conservation, migration, tracking, & banding are covered as well. There even a whole section on hummingbird meccas.

Finally, the book gives tips on how to attract the birds. Types of plants that attract hummingbirds are listed for 6 different regions, with both common & Latin names. The bird types native to each region are also given.

With a lay-flat spiral binding, sturdy paper, and gatefold pages that enable each project to be presented across a single spread, this is a highly practical workbook in a very attractive package, like the other titles in the Home Living Workbook series (Pillows, Lampshades, and Bed Linens). Good color photos and crisp color diagrams complement complete how-to instructions for 20 projects, including feather-light tie-on sheers; elegant linen drapes; deftly tailored stripes; skirted, monogrammed, or gracefully shaped valances; and ideas for edgings, appliques, and other restrained adornments. "Simple curtains," says noted stylist Katrin Cargill, "make stylish statements that are subtly effective rather than overly dramatic ... and because they do not require yards and yards of material, you can use that irresistible fabric without breaking the bank." --Amy Handy

        5 out of 5 stars Simple confidence.......2001-03-07

I first checked out this book from the library, and after having to renew it a couple times, decided to purchase it. I made beautiful curtains for my daughter's bedroom. Even though I am a novice at sewing, the instructions were easy to follow, and I learned a lot of stitching techniques that got me real excited about moving on to my next project. I think Katrin Cargill is very knowledgeable and at the same time keeps the novice sewer in mind.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas which are reasonably easy to make!.......2000-10-25

This is the best book on curtains that I have seen - and I've looked around quite a bit. I was looking for several things to help me make curtains for my new home. Although I have some sewing experience I would not call myself an expert sewer. Many of the books currently available are really geared towards people with my level of experience or less, including this book. I wanted good pictures of the end product, so that I could really see what I was going to be making. Again, this is something most books on curtains have. However, the two things I wanted but which I only found in this book were: cool modern ideas (no ruffles or huge jabots, please!) and great instructions.

The majority of the curtains in this book were really neat ideas that would fit in really well in homes today. If you have very traditional tastes or have a very formal decorating style, you probably wouldn't find much in this book. I wanted something less formal and some unusual/different ideas and definitely found that in this book.

The best aspect of this book was that the instructions were written really well and were completely designed for customization (different window sizes, different material use). Material use, how to's, and general sewing instructions were all included. There is also a great section at the end of the book (referred to often in the instructions) going over the common techniques used in the book and how to do them (with illustrations).

5 out of 5 stars This book has lots of simple ideas........1998-08-21

The book has wonderful ideas that seem easy to follow beginning with measuring windows to how much fabric you will need. Each curtain has a page that opens up to show detailed directions. The color photos are great! There are even template designs to copy that help design a more creative curtain. The book truly teaches you how to sew simple and easy to make curtains. I am looking forward to getting started sewing curtains for every room in my house.

It's not always easy to find appropriate window treatments for contemporary interiors. This book offers lots of solutions in photos, with illustrated projects using simple basic sewing techniques.

If you're looking for fancy drapes for traditional homes, this probably isn't the book for you. But if you're young and want something with clean lines and easy sewing, you may find it just right.

3 out of 5 stars More of the same from Katrin Cargill.......2002-03-21

After being inspired by the author's Simple Curtains book, I decided to purchase this book. Unfortunately, there were no reviews, so I took a chance and purchased it anyway. While this book has great pictures, classifies different styles such as classic, country and contemporary and has easy to follow directions, I was disappointed that many of the styles and techniques had already been featured in Simple Curtains (scalloped curtains, gingham curtains, lots of tension wire and eyelets). I also think that the workbook style of Simple Curtains is more functional than the more "coffee table style" of Curtain Bible. If you already have Simple Curtains, don't bother buying this book.

After reading several books and articles on menopause, this is the first book that provided detailed information backed by research. The case studies were very enlightening. This book gave me the information necessary to advocate intelligently on my behalf with my doctors. Information about hormonal fluctuations and depletions in females is important to all women of any age.

                          Book Description

The extraordinary accomplishments of Michelangelo (1475-1564) were born in his heroic efforts to reconcile earthly passions with devotion to and fear of God. His work in sculpture and painting, which made him a controversial figure in his time and for centuries afterward, is fully showcased in this richly illustrated Spanish-language entry in the Basic Art series celebrating major artists.

                          5 out of 5 stars 3,153,600 Minutes of Hell.......2006-01-23

Imagine trying to survive 3,153,600 minutes of hell, with each minute seeming as if it was a year long. That's what Helina Birenbaum describes in her autobiography about surviving the holocaust, Hope is the Last to Die.
The book and its author are remarkable, as Joan Martorelli, notes in her review on Amazon.com (June 15, 2003). Going over the descriptive passion Halina writes with, Ms. Martorelli introduces ideas about how an everyday person could cope with the Holocaust and also looks back on times she visited concentration camps.
One point that Ms. Martorelli makes in this review is that her descriptions of the trauma, the joy, and the anger are so vivid and expressive that they simply draw you in and make you feel as though you are almost there with her as she goes through the manic changes of emotion. I completely agree with this. I also think (though the writer of this review doesn't contradict this) that it would be impossible to fully experience any pain Halina went through just by reading a book about the troubles, But acknowledging that brings us one step closer to comprehending.
Halina did not get a chance to grieve about a lot of the loss faced. She was not able to sit down and cry even for a minute because it would jeopardize her chances of survival. In the loss of both her dear mother and of her first love, she isn't able to say goodbye. They are both taken so suddenly and forcefully. She had to tune out her urges to mourn. If she had not done that, I believe she would have died along side the millions of other persecuted.
A book so filled with love, character, hope, and that's so easy to follow and get caught up in should not be kept of your bookshelf. Hope is the Last to Die fits that description perfectly, and I recommend this book to everyone.

                          5 out of 5 stars Truely a remarkable woman.......2003-12-07

I also bought this book in Auschwitz. I read is as soon as I bought it. While touring through the concentration camps you see all the horrible things that these people had to go through. But when you read the book, you experience the whole thing again, but with more heart. You go through the steps with Halina, you cry and you can almost feel what she felt. She is a remarkable woman for not possessing hatred, instead she encourages love and wisdom. Because of Halina I have become a more understanding person.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable book, remarkable woman.......2003-06-16

I have read many books and seen many movies about the Holocaust; have visited Auswchwitz and Dachau, but I have never felt the horror of the camps as I did while reading this book. The reader is there with Ms. Birenbaum, feeling the cold, the hunger, the constant terror and rage. It is unimaginable that this woman survived 6 years of inhuman treatment--but she did.

Because Ms. Birenbaum describes her own experiences as a Polish Jew coming of age during the Third Reich, she has much to teach us. The author expresses her emotions so simply and beautifully that the reader feels joy at her triumphs and while crying at her losses, emotional pain and humiliation. This remarkable woman, who was a child (between 9 and 15 years of age during the war), was wise, strong, resourceful and brave beyond all expectations. She watched almost all those she loved disappear. While standing in line at a "selection" at the Majdanek Camp, she turned around to talk to her beloved mother who had for years emotionally sheltered her young daughter from the inevitable (a la "Life is Beautiful"), and found her gone. She never saw her again, never said good-bye. In the camps she created new families for herself, only to loose these people, as well. Most touching was Ms. Birenbaum's first experience of falling in love and the loss of that man. And through all this, she was never able to mourn. Emotions had to be pushed deep inside because the focus had to be on survival.

On several occasions, the author expressed her need for dignity and self-respect by standing up to her captors and, unbelieveably, was not shot for her defiance. She describes her indifference to the pain of others as a way of coping with the near certainty that she would loose them, while also expressing her longing to be touched and held and by someone.

After reading this book, I think about all the little annoyances of daily living, and how meaningless they are. I wonder how many of us, in our pre-teens, could have dealt with the protracted horror of the ghetto and camps as Ms. Birenbaum did. How many of us would have had the will and fortitude to live through the experiences described in this book? Ms. Birenbaum, you were a remarkable child and are a courageous woman!

I have read many books about the holocaust, but this one is special to me. After having the honor of actually meeting the author and hearing her story told first-hand (twice), I felt like I had to get her book. I did, and it changed me. Reading it was an experience which was almost too difficult for me and yet, I didn't want it to end.

It is written like a story -you go through everything she goes through, you sort of relive it with her. That is why, when you finish the book, you feel like she is your best friend. I wish she was.

5 out of 5 stars The power of the soul to overcome.......1997-12-05

One of the BEST first hand accounts of the holocost and life inside Auschwitz. I bought my copy at Auschwitz and every detail from the book is superimposed with the memory of the camp as it is today. The imagery the author uses is mesmerizing. This is a truly moving story full of hardship and courage. Even through all of the trials and tribulations of life in the camp of death, the author shows us the beauty of companionship and hope. I wondered at this book. How one individual could servive those around her dying and still have the desire to live. It is through the hope and courage that she can live and it is through this book that the problems of my life seem so insignificant.
