      Book Description

Giuliano Pancaldi sets us within the cosmopolitan cultures of Enlightenment Europe to tell the story of Alessandro Volta--the brilliant man whose name is forever attached to electromotive force. Providing fascinating details, many previously unknown, Pancaldi depicts Volta as an inventor who used his international network of acquaintances to further his quest to harness the power of electricity. This is the story of a man who sought recognition as a natural philosopher and ended up with an invention that would make an everyday marvel of electric lighting.

Examining the social and scientific contexts in which Volta operated--as well as Europe's reception of his most famous invention--Volta also offers a sustained inquiry into long-term features of science and technology as they developed in the early age of electricity. Pancaldi considers the voltaic cell, or battery, as a case study of Enlightenment notions and their consequences, consequences that would include the emergence of the "scientist" at the expense of the "natural philosopher."

Throughout, Pancaldi highlights the complex intellectual, technological, and social ferment that ultimately led to our industrial societies. In so doing, he suggests that today's supporters and critics of Enlightenment values underestimate the diversity and contingency inherent in science and technology--and may be at odds needlessly.

Both an absorbing biography and a study of scientific and technological creativity, this book offers new insights into the legacies of the Enlightenment while telling the remarkable story of the now-ubiquitous battery.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great easy recipes.......2006-11-21

I really like this cookbook. The recipes taste great and are often acceptible for non vegetarians as well. I love that they are easy to make and use ingredients that I usually have on hand.

There are some minor annoyances with the bi-cultural aspect of the cookbook. The author tries to make the book suitable for both British and American English speakers, and this results in 1 chili (chilli) etc. On the other hand: I really like the fact that the author gives both metric and imperial measurements and says that you can use them interchangeably. I like to measure some things in tablespoons/cups and other things in grams. This cookbook is the only one that lets me do that.

This is truly a recipe book, not a book that goes into great detail about nutrition and vegetarianism. The recipes, with the exception of the desserts, are healthy, using whole foods. You can usually easily reduce the oil and/or salt to make them even more healthy. I do wish the author would use more vegetables, or give options to make meals richer in vegetables by listing possible vegetable side dishes.

I highly recommend this cookbook if you want to use more tofu in your diet. If ingredients like "sea salt" put you off and you do not think to just use regular salt instead, this cookbook may not be for you though.

          4 out of 5 stars Great Ideas.......2006-11-08

One of my co-workers told me about this book after she labeled me a Carbotarian, since I eat more carbohydrates than I do vegetables. The reason is because grocery stores and most restaurants are not equipped for a large selection of vegetarian food. I pretty much gave up on finding great meals to cook that weren't bland or completely green. But when I went to the Soul Vegetarian East restaurant in Chicago (where I live) and tasted all of these soul food dishes they made with tofu and soy, it threw me off. I realized then that there are creative ways to make food that I used to eat before I became a vegetarian. My co-worker, who does eat meat, was even impressed with this book. I was elated to find out that there was a way for me to eat breakfast food (Tofu Scramble) without dealing with that gross white thing in real eggs. I bought it for that recipe alone, plus this book has great advice for how to take care of tofu. I never knew you could freeze it until I read it in this book. I wasted no time jumping on Amazon.com to buy it. Nothing in this cookbook is hard for me to find, and for the most part, I already have this stuff sitting in my refrigerator so I'll finally get to use it.

2 out of 5 stars Not so quick and Easy.......2004-04-20

I got this hoping that it would fit into my busy lifestyle. Well, there are only a few recipes that are both quick and easy. On top of that I was looking to add tofu to the list of things I eat, not replace every kind of dairy product with a soy product. So, if you have time to go shopping for not so common ingredients like sea salt, have a liquidizer, and are a vegan, this book would be perfect for you.

4 out of 5 stars Tofu that tastes good? YUP!.......2000-05-03

I originally borrowed this book and after trying a few of the recipes, just had to have it. I couldn't believe that tofu could taste this good! Anyone can use this book and even disquise tofu so your "No I would never eat that friends" can be tricked into changing their minds! Give it a shot!

You do not need this book even if you are a beginning quilter. It gives basic blocks rendered in 6" or slightly larger format. Translating any block from any source to such a size is not hard for anyone with fifth grade math skills to do. Essential Advice, such as what flame retardant materials are available on the market and where to buy them, is not given. A discussion addressing the safety of your ultimate creation should be the very first chapter in this book including a thorough disclosure of the flamability of all fibers.

4 out of 5 stars Really wonderful, but..........2000-10-21

Truly, a fine book, but I doubt it's for beginners. After a brief (30 page) culture and environment description and introduction, there's a list of the miniature orchids you can (possibly) grow...but here is the crux of the problem. The plants are described, but it seems as if the descriptions are simply being quoted from some unknown source; mostly there are no culture descriptions. Most orchids aren't all that cheap, and most growers like to do research on what they're going to buy. Temperature, humidity, resting period, etc are all important...and unless you can do a search on some of these true rarities, the money (and the search time) will be simply wasted. There's simply nothing about them other than the descriptions.

Written for caregivers as well as the dying, Handbook for Mortals is an excellent resource for anyone facing the end of life. Authors Joanne Lynn, M.D., and Joan Harrold, M.D., offer sensitive and practical advice for the ambiguous final stage of a life-threatening illness--when hope for a recovery is waning and the patient and family members are turning toward a different horizon, that of accepting and supporting an imminent death. For the most part, the authors focus on physical concerns such as pain management, artificial feeding, and an especially poignant passage about assisted suicide.

Because of their backgrounds, the authors are also comfortable discussing the emotional complexities of dying, such as offering advice on giving and receiving forgiveness and resolving conflicts in close relationships. (Lynn is director of the Center to Improve Care of the Dying at George Washington University and Harrold is medical director of a Pennsylvania hospice.) The handbook offers many sidebars, including "Words to Try" when speaking with a sick person: instead of saying, "Dad, you are going to be just fine," the authors suggest saying, "Dad, are there some things that worry you?" Proceeds from the sale of the book support Americans for Better Care of the Dying, a national charitable organization devoted to improving care for the last stage of life. --Gail Hudson

                              Book Description

Handbook for Mortals is warmly addressed to all those who wish to approach the final years of life with greater awareness of what to expect and greater confidence about how to make the end of our lives a time for growth, comfort, and meaningful reflection. Written by Drs. Joanne Lynn and Joan Harrold and a variety of experts from nursing, hospice, counseling, and the arts, this book provides equal measures of practical information and gentle insight. Readers will learn what decisions they will need to face, where to look for help, how to ease pain and other symptoms, what to expect with specific diseases, and how the health-care system operates. Equally important to this practical information are the personal stories included here of how people have come to terms with dying, faced their fears, and made important choices. From down-to-earth advice on how to talk to your doctor to inspiring quotes from such writers as W. H. Auden, Jane Kenyon, and others, Handbook for Mortals encompasses the needs of both the body and the spirit in our final years.

5 out of 5 stars Handbook For Mortals.......2007-09-19

As the wife of a young man dying of cancer, this book was an incredible aid to getting through each day and learning what to expect. That was 15 years ago. My sister-in-law faced the same situation recently when her husband was diagnosed, and I bought the book for her. She said she couldn't put it down until she read every page. We need to have that helping hand when we're hurting. This book is it!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Resource for Caregivers and those who love them..........2007-05-14

This is a must have resource for all of us. It is a practical book that helps you with End of Life concerns and how to plan for them. Far too many people wait until a crisis to make desperate choices that could be avoided. It is difficult to live with the choices that we make in crisis. Many times a crisis situation does not give you the opportunity to discuss critical issues with your family before the crisis occurs. This book will give you the necessary tools to discuss your wants and wishes for the living of your years.

I have owned this book for several years and decided to use it as an adjunct teaching tool for those training to become hospice volunteers. Every person in the group gave a high rating to this book. I will continue to use this book in future volunteer training classes. 5 out of 5 stars Handbook for Mortals.......2003-03-01

I found this book days after leaving the hospital with a two year prognosis for a misdiagnosed illness. My head was spinning. I was making lists of questions and to do lists for leaving my 2 young children. Finding this book was a wonderful gift. It answered my questions and provided a realistic outlook for what to expect of a terminal condition. The book provides sample statements for calling your relatives and helps you to prepare for your doctor appointments. I visited a doctor today and I led the session and all of my questions were addressed before the exam occurred. This book should be recommended to all diagnosed with a terminal illness. Highly recommended book!

I wish I had picked up this book earlier in my step-father's illness. Very useful for those who are facing illness or who love someone who is very ill, telling you the kinds of things to expect and ways of dealing them.

                                      Book Description

African American women artists have fought both racism and prejudice. Their works, remarkably varied in style, expression and medium, reflect the sensitivity and integrity that is, in part, a product of this struggle. The art of 24 African American women are examined: Lois Mailou Jones, Shirley Woodson, Howardena Pindell, Vivian Browne, Norma Morgan, Freida High W. Tesfagiorgis, Elizabeth Catlett, Jewel Simon, Faith Ringgold, Emma Amos, Robin Holder, Cynthia Hawkins, Camille Billops, Delilah Pierce, Yvonne Catchings, Gilda Snowden, Malkia Roberts, Ann Tanksley, Alma W. Thomas, Clementine Hunter, Viola Burley Leak, Mary Reed Daniel, Adell Westbrook, and Nanette Carter. Their work is allied to various schools of art, from expressionism to realism.

                                        Book Description

Linking the personal and the historical, Schloff integrates oral accounts, diaries, letters, and autobiographies with original research and interpretation to shed vital new light on the Jewish experience in America's heartland. The book uses the voices of four generations of Jewish women who settled in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Iowa, and Wisconsin to show how they transported and transformed their cultural and religious life in a region inhabited by few Jews. As the wives of fur traders and homesteaders, storekeepers and professionals, they were the key link in creating Jewish homes and helping their families fit in--often under harsh conditions. But in the process of becoming Jewish Americans, they also carved out new roles for themselves as jobholders, synagogue-builders, and social activists.
