    Book Description

Expelled from occupied New Orleans by Federal forces after refusing to pledge loyalty to the Union, Henri Garidel remained in exile from his home and family from 1863 to 1865. Lonely, homesick, and alienated, the French-Catholic Garidel, a clerk in the Confederate Bureau of Ordnance, was a complete outsider in the wartime capital of Richmond.

In his faithfully kept diary, Garidel relates the trials and discomforts--physical, emotional, spiritual, and professional--of life in a city entirely foreign to him. Civil War Richmonders were predominantly white, evangelical Protestants in a relatively small, insular city. His living quarters devolved from a private home shared with his family in cosmopolitan New Orleans to a cramped, cold rooming house away from everything familiar.

Trapped in Richmond for the last two years of the conflict and a witness to the eventual Federal occupation of the city, Garidel made daily entries that offer a striking and realistic blend of Southern domestic and political life during the Civil War. From his candid remarks about slavery and race, gender issues, military history, immigration, social class and structure, and religion, Henri Garidel's readers gain a revealing human picture of a major turning point in American history.

Visual intelligence, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman writes, is the power that people use to "construct an experience of objects out of colors, lines, and motions." And what an underappreciated ability it is, too; despite the fact that the visual process uses up a considerable chunk of our brainpower, we're only just learning how it works. Hoffman aptly demonstrates the mysterious constructive powers of our eye-brain machines using lots of simple drawings and diagrams to illustrate basic rules of the visual road. Many of the examples are familiar optical illusions--perspective-confounding cubes, a few lines that add up to a more complex shape than seems right. Hoffman also takes a cue from Oliver Sacks, employing anecdotes about people with various specific visual malfunctions to both further his mechanical explanation of visual intelligence and drive home how important this little-understood aspect of cognition can be in our lives. An especially intriguing example involves a boy, blind from birth, who is surgically given the power to see. At first, he is completely unable to visually distinguish objects familiar by touch, such as the cat and the dog. Other poignant examples show clearly how image construction is normally linked to our emotional well-being and sense of place. Visual Intelligence is a fascinating, confounding look (as it were) at an aspect of human physiology and psychology that very few of us think about much at all. --Therese Littleton

          Book Description

Cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman's exploration of the extraordinary creative genius of the mind's eye "has many virtues, of which sheer intellectual excitement is the foremost" (Nature). Hoffman explains that far from being a passive recorder of a preexisting world, the eye actively constructs every aspect of our visual experience.

In an informal style replete with illustrations, Hoffman presents the compelling scientific evidence for vision's constructive powers, unveiling a grammar of vision--a set of rules that govern our perception of line, color, form, depth, and motion. Hoffman also describes the loss of these constructive powers in patients such as an artist who can no longer see or dream in color and a man who sees his father as an imposter. Finally, Hoffman explores the spinoffs of visual intelligence in the arts and technology, from film special effects to virtual reality. This is, in sum, "an outstanding example of creative popular science" (Publishers Weekly).

          5 out of 5 stars can't you see?!!!.......2007-03-14

This is an awesome book in terms of relating a scientific quest with ever tantalizing stories.

You can tell if it is a good book by reading it. To see is to beleive.

4 out of 5 stars How our senses create reality.......2006-11-06

I got turned onto this book in graduate school, but never got around to reading it until now. But having read it, I'd have to say it's a fascinating book about vision and the cognitive functions of the brain that help people construct what they see. The author also briefly discusses the sense of touch and how it constructs reality, but the main focus is on vision.

What I really liked was the explanation behind optical illusions. I didn't agree with everything the author wrote, because I found with some of the exercises that my experiences differed from his. Yet what this book does show is that what we see isn't always he objective reality we'd like it to be...in fact rarely, at least through our senses, is reality objective.

If there's one complaint I had, it was that he purposely chose to leave out the citations. Granted he drew on a lot of work, but it'd be nice to trace his sources and the context of those sources. That said I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how our senses help us construct reality.

          5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-04-11

A discussion of the "grammar" of vision - the mind's eye, imagination and "making sense." A must read for poets interested in the relationship between image and meaning.

          5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2003-07-13

A brillant book. It delivers not only the phenomenon, as many books about this subject do, but relevant and useful explanations why these phenomenons occur. Especially the insights about grouping and visual splitting in parts at concave cusps were most enlightening to me.

              2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2007-09-15

I bought this book because the cover made my mouth water. I ordered it for a really good price and anxiously awaited it's arrival. Well, when it came I was extremley dissapointed. I do not recognize some of the ingredients in the cakes that I was interested in and alot of things seem geared toward experienced bakers. But the majority of the cakes in this book I would not even try. The cover is still beautiful though.

3 out of 5 stars For Experienced Bakers Only........2006-03-22

This book is a valuable collection of Italian cakes that you probably have never eaten, much less even heard of before. On the down side, half of the recipes in this book simply do not work as written.

If you are an experienced baker, this book is an invaluable encyclopedia of Italian cakes. Each and every recipe that you can get to work from this book will be a revelation to your dining guests, in that they are neither German, Austrian, American, nor French in influence. The combination of flavors are uniquely Italian, underappreciated in this country, and therefore valuable and sure to amaze and surprise your diners. You are on your own, however, in choosing those recipes that will work, and being able to get faulty or incomplete recipes to work correctly.

If you are an average home cook, however, avoid this book. There is no educational information, and no helpful hints. This is a big problem, in that many recipes are rather tricky and require experience to pull off correctly. Almost all recipes need additional techniques to do correctly, and these techniques are not spelled out (an experience baker, however, should be able to supply the missing bits). The recipes appear to be a simple cut and paste affair, cribbing from many sources far and wide, but without all the explanatory stuff you would normally expect to get in addition to just the recipe.

This is a terrific cookbook specializing in cakes. The print is VERY easy to read unless you require extremely Large Print books. I have less than perfect vision and find this book very easy to read. Like all Reader's Digest books, this is excellent quality. Wide variety of cakes, instructions are clear, lots of great photographs. Many, many cakes. The book is large but not outlandishly large; it just has a lot of cake recipes - which is a great thing in a Cake cookbook! Great buy!

                          5 out of 5 stars A Visionary; A Vision and a Timeless Prescription.......2004-03-17

                          J. Russel Smith's book changed my life. It set me on a course to become an authority on solving world hunger on a local level and I have traveled to the third world with Smith's advice clearly in mind. This is not an easy read, and the photographs are black and white, not very clear and dated. But. This man writes in the 1950's (this is a reprint) that we need to stop the destruction of the rain forests of the world (! - now THAT was thinking ahead!). Agricultural planners in all countries need to give this book a look: Smith is right on and shows a way in the darkness towards universal food without shortages. This book should be on the shelf of any serious world agriculturalist and anyone who deems that world hunger can be overcome.

4 out of 5 stars Tree crops offer potential solutions for a sustainable ag........1998-12-07

I don't have too much to say about Tree Crops---A Permanent Agriculture wrote by J. Russell Smith and the introduction by Wendell Berry. Its is a summary of tree choices for US lands and there potential roles as a food source for humans and livestock. I was most intriuged by the information on utilizing mulberry trees as an early season feed supply for pigs and chickens. I would recommend the book for any sustainable ag fans who are very willing to think outside the box.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Activities For Developing Emotional & Social Skills.......2003-08-30

I got this book, being familiar with the HeartMath Institute and their research on mind-body topics and heart-based biofeedback applications. I have used the Freeze-Framer computer program and even developed my own way of building "coherent" pulse patterns, supplementing Childre's music and appreciative heart center emotional focus with "toning" - like what Robert Monroe would refer to as resonant tuning. This book by Childre provides a variety of activities for different youth age ranges, focusing on using emotional skills that enhance coping abilities, empathy, and appreciation. As a counselor, I have used a few similar activities with elementary school-aged children. Unlike most other social/emotional skill activity guides for children, this book focuses on connecting the emotions with the body (heart). Knowing that mind and body are aspects of a holistic whole, this is a superior approach to more limited conventional approaches. Some of the activities in this book I think need some tweaking to be more engaging or inviting for resistant and impatient children, while others are pretty simple and likely to quickly get children engaged and practicing positive emotional skills. I would recommend that readers learn about the HeartMath programs and research, and even try the "Freeze-Framer" pulse monitor on themselves, as most people typically have pretty incoherent pulse patterns, which are typical of our emotionally unhealthy civilization and lifestyles, leading to the massive pandemic of heart diseases in our society. Our civilization presents social patterns that fuel poor coping skills and heart disease - we don't teach kids meditation, breathing, or positive attitudinal skills, instead focusing on punishment and guilt-inducement when children don't please adults. Caretakers put more energy into punitive discipline and verbal chastisement than into modeling appreciation. Then, the model for handling unpleasant emotions in our culture is dominated by drugs - including stimulants and depressants, both illegal/recreational and prescription. By the time most people are middle aged their hearts begin to weaken from this burden of emotional trauma, suppression, and substance abuse, not to mention the junk food diets that are also used to momentarily sooth unpleasant feelings. Doc Childre should be commended for his efforts to help people build positive emotional skills and coping behaviors, starting in childhood.

5 out of 5 stars The missing link in education.......2001-05-01

This book fills a big lacuna in education. It is not enough to talk about love. Lucky are the parents and teachers who now have such lesson plans to teach children and adolescents in an active and fun way to develop their inner resources to become loving and geuninely caring, without overcare. The three basic HeartMath tools of HEART LOCK-IN, FREEZE-FRAME and CUT-THRU and numerous interpersonal skills are taught through the activities. [Please confer my other reviews of Doc Childre's books, starting with Cut-Thru.] I have been recommending this book to hundreds of parents, school-heads and teachers and have heard of very favorable responses. The HeartMath materials will certainly have much to contribute to humankind.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Children to Love.......2000-04-05

I feel I must begin this review by letting readers know that I do have a close association with HeartMath and Doc Childre in that I co-authored another book, The HeartMath Solution with Doc. With that said I still feel compelled, whether somewhat biased or not, to share my perspectives about Teaching Children to Love.

Doc puts great emphasis on the need to better educate children in the area of mental and emotional self managment. The 80 games and activities he developed for this book do excatly that. The games are intelligently organized, easy to teach children and they are effective. For anyone who works with kids, whether it be a parent, grand parent or child care provider, I can safely say that this is as good a resource as I have seen for helping young people develop the skills they need to navigate these challenging times. It was created from care and it shows.

                                              Book Description

The importance of A. W. N. Pugin (1812-52) in the history of the Gothic Revival, in the development of ecclesiology, in the origins of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and in architectural theory is incontestable. A leading British architect who was also a designer of furniture, textiles, stained glass, metalwork, and ceramics, he is one of the most significant figures of the mid-nineteenth century and one of the greatest designers. His correspondence is important because it provides more insight into the man and more information about his work than any other source. In this volume Pugin resumes his collaboration with Charles Barry on the greatest architectural commission of the nineteenth century: the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament. Several of Pugin's major churches are opened, including St Barnabas's in Nottingham and St Mary's in Newcastle on Tyne, both subsequently raised to the status of cathedral. The volume of Pugin's work in the applied arts grows, and his most sumptuous book - the Glossary of Ecclesiastical Ornament and Costume - is published, becoming one of the chief ways in which his influence grew. He builds a house for himself at Ramsgate, one of the best examples of his domestic manner, and work begins on his own church of St Augustine, possibly his most significant building. He takes on his only pupil, J. H. Powell, who subsequently becomes an important designer in his own right.

                                                Book Description

Does one ever escape from the family? How much do we understand about our own past? How do we come to be who we are?

Walter Abish, the internationally acclaimed author of How German Is It, examines these questions through the prism of his own experience, and confronts and encapsulates the historic upheavals of the mid-twentieth century in this brilliant, deceptively simple, and quietly wrenching account of his two journeys.

The first begins in Vienna, where Abish was born in the 1930s in the Jewish, but not-too-Jewish, household of a prosperous perfumer. Then it ricochets around the world as his parents flee first to France (his mother had to sneak alone across the Italian border), then to war-torn Shanghai under Japanese occupation, just ahead of Mao’s army, then to Israel.

Incapable of understanding his family’s desperate situation, Abish as a boy creates his own private world, filtering out precarious and terrifying realities.

Abish describes fantastic events in the coolest tones. In precise, haunting detail, he records the perceptions of a child who registers and remembers what he will only later understand. He writes of the day in the park when a stranger suddenly screams “Jews out!” and he and his frail grandmother run for the exit in a panic as the other children and grandmothers stand and watch; the day his father is released by the Gestapo because a man in the room owes him money that he has never tried to collect and says, “Let Abish go—he’s okay”; of the time his father speaks to him about inheriting his perfume business, as they stand on the deck of a ship bound for China.
The first journey recounts the flight; the second journey chronicles the return: Abish writes about how, in the 1980s, he went on a tour to Germany to launch the translation of his award-winning novel How German Is It—a book he wrote without ever having set foot there, deliberately, because he wished to elicit the idea of Germanness in what was “a fantasy of Germany.” This tour of what to him is an unfamiliar society includes a side trip to Vienna, where he glimpses the life he might have experienced and has the horrifying feeling that he never left.

Double Vision is a book that cuts to the quick. With unflinching candor, humor, and affection, Abish re-creates the way it feels to be a child and to look at your parents and wonder who they are. To be an adult and catch them in every corner of your personality. To look back on the world of your youth and realize both what you noticed and what you missed. It is a stunning achievement.
