4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, But..........2000-03-06

This is a very helpful book, however, it should probably be read primarily by those with progressive or those in the later stages of MS. I will say though that this book is very thoughtfully written with the feelings of the reader in mind. Mrs. Schwarz writes as if she is talking to you directly, kind of like she is in the room with you. I myself have been recently diagnosed with MS, but I am not yet so far gone that this particular book is necessary. But if I do get worse I will be glad I have it :-)

        Book Description

Champagne may be the most misunderstood category of wine in the world. The major reason for all the confusion is the use of the term “Champagne” appearing on labels of sparkling wines that come from places other than the province of Champagne in northeastern France. But true champagne can only be born in an environment that combines the essential elements of chalky soil, a cool climate, and the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grape varieties. These are the crucial elements informing the unique flavor profile found only in wines from that corner of the world. Without them, any wine—even a very good one—calling itself champagne, is just an imposter.

Baffled by bubbly? Let wine expert Ed McCarthy clear away the confusion. If you find shopping for champagne a challenge, try this fun, friendly guide and discover just how easy it is to select the perfect bottle and:

What’s the difference between brut and extra dry? Is Vintage Champagne worth the extra money? You’ll get the answers to these and all your questions about that effervescent wonder. And in the process you’ll discover:

Like most good things in life, the better you understand champagne, the more you enjoy it. This friendly guide will help you make your enjoyment of the most glamorous beverage on the planet complete.

2 out of 5 stars Are there only American Dummies passioned by Champagne??.......2005-08-28

Although the book gives a good overview about 'le' and 'la' Champagne, I think it's a little bit too focused on the US market (hence the title of my review). I think it's certainly interesting to give an impression about the US market (and others!) but I would have preferred it in a separate chapter.

Also, I definitely consider the storage temperature indicated in the concerning chapter on storing and serving champagne to be too high!. For not-vintage champagnes this might not be that relevant, but storing a more expensive (and complex!) prestige cuvee at 59 F can (and will probably) destroy many of the deliscious aromas of the wine (FYI: for prolonged storage chamagne should be store between 50F/10C and 54F/12C). This kind of critical information SHOULD be correct!!

I would also have preferred some more outspoken opinions and personal tastes, and less diplomatic opinions (I know it helps when calling a big house for some tasting bottles but it is less interesting for the readers), in my opinion to many wines have been denominated as '... this is my preferred rose champagne!..." (how many preferred ones can you have?).

For the starting and non-professional champagne devotees, I would more recommend the books by Tom Stevenson, Richard Juhlin and Maggie Mcnie. Although those books are more comprehensive, they all have a better introductory chapter on the history, production, area, grapes and ... storage conditions.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference: All About Champagne.......2005-03-08

This book ain't just for dummies! It's a rather comprehensive overview of champagne--how and where it's made and different styles and price ranges, with good information on serving and food pairing. I continue to reference this book before I give champagne tastings, and continue to come away with something new.
Alot of information for the price, without any snobbery. Highly Recommended!

        5 out of 5 stars A votre sante!.......2002-01-21

Prior to my recent trip to the Champagne district of France, I had the very good fortune of happening upon a copy of Ed McCarthy's "Champagne for Dummies". Although I have seen and considered countless "Dummies", this was my first purchase...and what a REWARDING purchase it was! Extremely well organized, knowledgeably written, and easy to use and understand, "Champagne for Dummies" should be considered de rigeur reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in what makes champagne the special drink that it is! McCarthy knows his stuff and how to present it in a way that's crisp, clean and thoroughly enjoyable...not unlike a glass of fine champagne! Definitely a "must have"!

5 out of 5 stars Celebrate with this book!.......2000-10-27

The "Dummies" series is well known for its easy to read text, clear diagrams, and well marked tips. The "Champagne for Dummies" is a welcome addition to the group! The text and graphics help make the ins and outs of Champagne clear to anyone interested in this fun, bubbly drink.

The book goes through a background of the drink, the history and legends, and then settles into the meaty material. It gives an overview of the four regions of Champagne - Montagne de Reims, Cote des Blancs, Vallee de la Marne, and the Aube (or Cote des Bar). It describes how the vineyards are classified by quality. Unlike some other regions, the last classification was done as recently as 1985. There are 17 Grand Cru vineyards and 40 Premiere Crus. Most wineries use grapes from a variety of vineyards; only the smaller wineries can typically claim to have grapes from only Grand Cru or Premiere Cru vineyards.

"Champagne for Dummies" goes deeply into what Mr. McCarthy has selected as the top 25 Champagne houses. This section is so detailed that it is broken into two chapters. Each house is described fully, with notes on the history of the house, current situation, and best buys to watch for.

The book describes what other growers, cooperatives, and organizations exist in the world of Champagne. It goes over the role each plays in getting the Champagne into the hands of the consumer.

Then the all important hands-on information is given. Be sure to buy Champagne from a shop with quick sales, so you can get the wine fresh. This helps ensure it has not suffered heat problems while waiting for your purchase. Buy from a temperature controlled shop, and don't buy at the end of the summer, where the wine was delivered and held during the hotter months. Also, don't store your wine in the fridge for more than a few weeks. This can harm Champagne, or any wine for that matter.

Champagne should be served in narrow flute glasses, at around 45 - 48F. It goes well with shellfish, oysters, and with light cheeses.

Information is given on visiting the Champagne region of France, giving advice on where to stay and where to eat. At the end, some details are given on non-French sparkling wines - the sparklers from California and Australia, Asti from Italy, and Cava from Spain. The book ends with a directory of Champagne wineries, a vintage chart, and glossary.

I enjoy the Wine Dummies series a great deal. This one would definitely be a great help for someone wishing to learn more about Champagne!

As hyperactivity in children becomes more and more common, many parents are desperate to find a solution. Although there is no quick fix--prescription medications, for example, can often make the situation worse rather than better--there is an answer that has worked for many families.

Scientific studies have shown that a change in diet--specifically, the restriction of certain foods and the addition of others--can greatly decrease a child's hyperactive tendencies. Help for the Hyperactive Child is a user-friendly book that first explains how these dietary modifications can help, and then guides you in pinpointing the foods to which your child may be having adverse reactions. Recipes are included, along with suggestions for making other important lifestyle changes. Help for the Hyperactive Child can help your hyperactive child.

This tender book, carefully edited by Susan Elizabeth Ryan, was chosen from among six handwritten manuscripts of the same title by the prolific American modernist painter and writer Marsden Hartley. Hartley "presents the scholar with an untidy field of inquiry," Ryan writes gently. Partly inspired by his friend Gertrude Stein's "autobiography" of Alice B. Toklas, it tells the story of a life at the center of the early modernist art movement in America, chiefly among the Alfred Stieglitz crowd. For this book, Ryan, in an extensive introduction, fills in many blanks, such as Hartley's homosexuality and the extreme sadness of his childhood after his mother's death when he was 8. The main text is a model of intellectual inquiry, self-doubt, and frequently mordant observations: "The summer in Paris was gay and amusing--there is always one summer in Paris when it is that." Or, "O, the wild rough gaiety of the Marseillaises when they are not murdering and thieving." --Margaret Moorman

                  Book Description

Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) is best known as an American modernist and pioneering artist of the early twentieth century. But he was also a prolific writer who published dozens of essays and reviews and several volumes of poetry and prose. The autobiographical account of his life is the most revealing document he left about his personal life and relationships--both for its disclosures and omissions--but has never been published before. Somehow a Past is compelling both as historical document and as personal narrative. Hartley knew nearly every figure of the international avant-garde in his day and unfolds his life largely through a chain of personal encounters. His traffic with such major literary and artistic figures as Alfred Stieglitz, Vasili Kandinski, Gertrude Stein, Mabel Dodge, Eugene O'Neill, Robert McAlmon, and Charles Demuth is recorded, as are his travels both domestic and foreign.

                  3 out of 5 stars Marsden Hartley Autobiography...Somehow a Past.......2001-01-01

This is a reworking of the autobiography of Marsden Hartley by Susan Elizabeth Ryan (Assistant Professor of Art, Louisiana State University) I have not read the previous versions but I am interested in Maine art and I found this autobiography and the pictures it contains interesting and informative about Hartley and his travels and interactions with other prominent artistic and literary figures of his time. There are 5 appendices that include some of his letters to Gertrude Stein and his niece Norma Berger. There are 45 illustrations (all in black and white) of photos of Hartley and of some of his paintings. There is a chronology of Hartley's life and travels which I have found helpful on occasion while researching some of his paintings.

This book probably would not be of interest to you unless you had an interest in Hartley, but if you want to understand him and his paintings this book would be a good place to start.

                              Book Description

In this important new addition to the literature of World War II, Alison Leslie Gold links together the harrowing yet ultimately inspiring personal accounts of individuals who lived through this dark period in human history. Meditating on such themes as kindness, love, and art, their stories shed light upon the various forces that gave people the strength and courage to survive.

From the story of a young Jewish woman who defied death to keep a promise she made to her dead mother to protect her baby sister, to the story of a young Berlin boy, the son of a Nazi, who separated from his father to discover a lifelong passion for the theater, Fiet's Vase and Other Stories of Survival uncovers the glowing sparks of hope and human kindness that carried people through these tragic times.

I've read dozens of Holocaust testimonials, but this collection is certainly one of the most gripping. Though they are survivor tales, they do not make for light reading (they do make for important reading). I'm still haunted by one story in particular about a young boy who escapes being buried alive -- I challenge you to read this book and not be plagued by the image of his teacher, Jablonski. The author does a fabulous job of culling together incredible stories of how dumb luck, random chance or connections play a role in saving people from unspeakable evil. An important collection that should not be missed.

Alison Leslie Gold has given us both truth and connection through the women's lives that she shares with us. In their stories, we find answers to the mystery of survival within that inexplicable fabric of love and spirituality. These are tales that have not been told before, not this entirely.

It is time for the public to honor the women of the Holocaust. "Any consistent Nazi plan had to target Jewish women specifically as women, for they were the only ones who would finally be able to ensure the continuity of Jewish life. In deed, although statistical data about the Holocaust will never be exact, there is sound evidence that the odds for surviving the Holocaust were worse for Jewish women than for Jewish men" (Rittner and Roth, Different Voices)

Gold, honors these women whose stories have been ignored for so long, so that we may now we honor their struggles and memory with our own lives. Thank you for the service you do for womankind.
Shalom, Heather Dune Macadam (co-author, Rena's Promise: A Story of Sisters in Auschwitz -- part of Rena's story is cited in this wonderful book.)

5 out of 5 stars Galloping through horror.......2003-09-25

We all have nightmares, but this one was real. In Fiet's Vase we gallop through horror after horror in Europe between 1939 and 1945. There is a thread of hope weaving its way through the book, reminding us of the immeasurable human spirit and of its infinite capacity to survive against the depths of human depravity. This book gives a powerful look, taste and feel of some of those special spirits and the conditions they survived. I am grateful for and inspired by Fiet's Vase, thank you Alison Leslie Gold. Now I must weep for humanity.
