Book Description
Henry Ford first met Thomas Edison at a dinner held during an Edison Convention, an annual event for the chief engineers and managers of the various Edison plants in order to exchange experiences. At this time, Ford was the chief engineer of the Detroit Edison Company. From this momentous occasion onward, Ford and Edison became friends and sounding boards for each other. This work is the story of this mutual friendship between two remarkable men.

The history of madness and its treatment is a fascinating one. At one time, the mentally ill were diagnosed as demonically possessed; later, when mental illness became the province of psychoanalysts, those conditions that are actually physical in nature, such as schizophrenia or manic depression, went insufficiently treated, their sufferers consigned to asylums. In his book, A History of Psychiatry, Edward Shorter, a medical historian at the University of Toronto, presents a concise chronology of mental illness and its treatment. Shorter favors a biological understanding of these disorders, concentrating on medical approaches to helping the seriously mentally ill.
Book Description
"PPPP . . . To compress 200 years of psychiatric theory and practice into a compelling and coherent narrative is a fine achievement . . . . What strikes the reader [most] are Shorter's storytelling skills, his ability to conjure up the personalities of the psychiatrists who shaped the discipline and the conditions under which they and their patients lived."—Ray Monk The Mail on Sunday magazine, U.K.
"An opinionated, anecdote-rich history. . . . While psychiatrists may quibble, and Freudians and other psychoanalysts will surely squawk, those without a vested interest will be thoroughly entertained and certainly enlightened."—Kirkus Reviews.
"Shorter tells his story with immense panache, narrative clarity, and genuinely deep erudition."—Roy Porter Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine.
In A History of Psychiatry, Edward Shorter shows us the harsh, farcical, and inspiring realities of society's changing attitudes toward and attempts to deal with its mentally ill and the efforts of generations of scientists and physicians to ease their suffering. He paints vivid portraits of psychiatry's leading historical figures and pulls no punches in assessing their roles in advancing or sidetracking our understanding of the origins of mental illness.
Shorter also identifies the scientific and cultural factors that shaped the development of psychiatry. He reveals the forces behind the unparalleled sophistication of psychiatry in Germany during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well as the emergence of the United States as the world capital of psychoanalysis.
This engagingly written, thoroughly researched, and fiercely partisan account is compelling reading for anyone with a personal, intellectual, or professional interest in psychiatry.

A lot or information not easily presented........2006-09-07
First off, any attempt to chronicle the history of psychiatry is commendable. The radical changes in the perception of the mentally ill and the treatment of mental illness requires a great deal of research and discernment. However, I found this book more encyclopaedic than a fluent historical account. Personally, it will probably serve as more of a reference than a straight through read. It does include many interesting anecdotes, just not fluently enough for me to read as intended.
Psychiatric hagiography.......2003-11-15
This is an unbalanced, often inaccurate, and entirely adulatory history of psychiatry, masquerading as scholarship. Shorter finally lost me at the point where he describes ice-pick lobotomies, of which he is mildly diapproving, as an "adventure."
Shorter's opinion on the history of psychiatry.......2003-09-03
I really enjoyed the part of this book on the history of psychiatry. Unfortunately only about 60% of the book is on this topic and the rest consists of Shorter's unbalanced opinions. As a Psychiartic Registrar/resident slightly more simpathetic to the Biological approach, even I found this book extremely biased. Shorter's concrete style of reasoning makes him far more suitable to write a book on the history of surgery. The finer nuances and richness of the field of psychiatry is clearly outside his grasp.
Mind Medicine -- Psychic or Somatic.......2000-11-18
Shorter's book is an important addition to the history of psychiatry. It falls short because of Shorter's "over kill" in his polemic against psychoanalysis. The Freudian perspective needs thoughtful criticism, but Shorter's attacks become carping. Psychoanalysis has made important cultural contributions, and many people have received benefit from the analyst's couch. Good history should have a direction, even a perspective. But Shorter's history would have been better served with a calmer and more balanced voice.

Adequate Overview, but Lacks Substance.......2005-07-16
Being the only book I could find on the Personal Chef industry, I purchased this book with high hopes of learning more about being a PC. I was disappointed to find this book lacked substance, was poorly edited, and left out important information.
While this book gives an adequate overview on several different aspects of the business, it doesn't go much into detail. For instance, the author gives a short summary of the 3 major PC associations but provides nothing that I couldn't get for free by going to each of the association's websites. And while one of the chapters claims that "Marketing is Key", he doesn't give specific tips how to market this particular type of business - what is the primary demographic and where is a newbie most likely to find business? This is very basic information that would be invaluable to someone looking to start a PC business.
Another problem I had with this book was the editing. There were some comments that just didn't make sense. For instance, the author explains that a bi-weekly service means you cook once every 2 weeks and a monthly service is when you cook once a month, but goes on to say, "Some clients will select a bi-weekly service but only have you cook once every four weeks." Huh?
The author encourages membership with one of the PC association and wisely takes a neutral position on which has more to offer. However, he does not give the reader any advice as to what to look for and what questions to ask. The biggest ommission is information on creating a website for the business. Is it necessary? If so, what type of information should you provide and how much information given up front is too much?
This book would be good for someone with little or no business experience and just wants some general information. But keep researching the internet and interviewing established PCs if you are seriously looking into building a PC business.

Book Description
A large amount of qualitative information has been gathered on many aspects of pig biology over recent years, in areas such as genetics, growth and physiology, and welfare. It is now widely recognized that there is a need to use these data as a basis for the development of quantitative models, in order to further improve performance and productivity. This has been achieved in some areas, notably physiology, but no previous attempt at bringing together and integrating this material has been made. This book, written by leading researchers from Europe, the USA and Australasia, fills that gap. It begins with descriptions of the animal, its feed and its environment. Experts then discuss the latest mechanistic mathematical models which describe particular physiological processes and take into account the main external influences. The collection concludes with a review of the advantages and implications of a quantitative approach to pig biology. The ideas presented will be essential reading for animal scientists, particularly applied physiologists, with an active interest in pigs and will also have relevance to research on other farm animals.

Dissapointing.......2005-08-26
I'm always on the search for good room-decor books, and I like most of the ideas that American Girl features in their magazine. But as I was looking through this book, I saw that many of the projects were pretty difficult-looking, the materials were too expensive, the projects were messy, or all three. I liked some of American Girl's other room decorating books; they were simpler and better then this one.
Good book but..........2004-12-28
This book was a good book. The only problem was it didn't have a lot of craft ideas per section. Most of the crafts I couldn't do because of the certain required materials. Better off saving your money!

Book Description
Raising children is truly an exciting adventure! Each day brings new discoveries that parents can enjoy right along with their children. However, child rearing can also present frustrating and stressful situations when children refuse to listen and obey.
When ?No? Gets You Nowhere—Teaching Your Toddler and Child Self-Control offers parents three categories of
reasons to say ?no? and other
options to saying ?no? that will build trust between parents and children. This trust can begin to develop when parents learn to say ?no? in a different way. Acknowledging your child?s feelings, giving your child choices, and demonstrating consequences to your child?s actions are examples of such options.
Author
Mark L. Brenner says that besides having children live in a loving and balanced home, parents should, ?always acknowledge and allow [their] child the freedom to express his or her feelings without censorship.?
In
When ?No? Gets You Nowhere, Brenner provides both his Seven-Step Method for Saying ?No? and the rationale for why these methods work. Other chapters include:
• Dangerous No?s
• Don?t talk Down—Talk Up!
• A Matter of Trust
• Summary of ?Knows?
Parenting does not have to be a frustrating experience.
When ?No? Gets You Nowhere, is an essential guide for parents who are facing a problem situation with their child and for those parents who want to avoid problems before they begin.
About the Author
A licensed marriage/family/child therapist for 18 years,
Mark L. Brenner has worked with children ages preschool through adolescence including those who are hyperactive and autistic. A father of a three-year-old son, he is currently developing a video series and a television show about parenting.

Got Belt?.......2007-02-13
It used to be called "belt on the behind".
Now we write books, and lets talk it all out.
And everyone wonders why kids are so out of control like never before today.
Every generation can say, to a point, certain problems with kids, but this latest one.
by far and away the most limp wristed bunch of men are turning out, and we need to all read books and find out why, and at the same time "the belt" has been kept buckled.
1 plus 1 equals what?
I raised mine the same as my parents raised me, and that is, most of the time, all you had to do is unbuckle the belt, and that was plenty warning.
Nobody needed any Supernanny Joe Frost before, and interesting how she never goes back after a year for a follow up with any of the families.
what's wrong with NO? Oh I must find a BOOK!
Great thoughts for active parenting.......2007-02-10
I found this book a quick read, which I find important as the parent of a 2 year old. Much of Brenner's thoughts I have read in other books, but there are some key points that were missing in my previous reading. I like the 7 steps Brenner sets out for saying no-it doesn't take a long time to do them, but it helps to have something to remind us how to say no without getting into a power struggle. I already used many of these things with my daughter-and other people have noticed, too, how few power struggles she and I/my husband get into. She listens to us and respects us, most of the time. There are times when we have to repeat instructions or such-and minor tantrums occur. But, as Brenner says those are the result of not getting what she wants and not liking the choices we give her. We are always able to move on when she's ready. I highly recommend this book to people who are looking for a new way to discipline or stop the power struggles that are a part of parenthood-regardless of how you choose to parent. I gave this book 4 stars simply because I received much of the information from other sources already, so it wasn't as useful as it might have been otherwise.
Too complicated!.......2001-09-07
I was absolutely overwhelmed at Brenner's multi-step program on how to deal with your toddler. By the time you finish ALL the steps, your toddler will be onto her NEXT tantrum!
There MUST Be Better Info Out There.......2001-06-29
had higher hopes for this book. aside the fact that much of this was obvious, common-sense stuff, i kept reading reviews about people talking about how "positive discipline" was a bunch of malarcky. well, i'm beginning to see why. that's the gist of this one anyway (say "yes" to your toddler (!) more often than u say "no," etc.). thanks, but i'll keep looking.
Wonderful!.......2000-08-29
I have two toddlers (2 & 3), this book provided practical advice that really impacted the way my husband and I parent. I agree with the author that teaching your child self-control is the real basis for discipline. I bought this book after becoming incredibly frustrated with my 3 year old's behavior. After 2 weeks of applying the techniques I saw real improvement in both of by son's behavior. I really recommend it for parents who believe their child is "difficult". A few modifacation in the way you parent may change your perspective.

Book Description
Doris McCarthy is one of Canada’s foremost landscape painters, a dynamic woman whose career spans fifty years of Canadian art history. As a student in Toronto in the 1920’s, she was tutored by Group of Seven members Arthur Lismer, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, and others; as a teacher, she inspired a generation of younger artists, among them Joyce Wieland.
This captivating memoir of her early years is the first installment of her warm and intimate biography. It describes the fortunes of an artist striving to establish herself in the art world of the thirties and forties and the odyssey of a spirited girl searching for her own path to fulfillment. Against the backdrop of those eventful decades, she writes of studying art in pre-war London, winning a teaching position in the depths of the Depression and roughing it on painting expeditions to northern Ontario, the Maritimes and the Rockies. She tells of her personal life: of breaking loose from a disapproving mother, building her own home on the bluffs above Lake Ontario, and of finding love in unexpected places.
Written with disarming candour and wit, and drawing on the diary she has kept since childhood, her story illuminates timeless themes: the youthful longing for independence, the nature of friendships between girls and women, the exhilaration of artistic creation, and the irresistible pull of nature and the Canadian landscape. A Fool in Paradise charms and enthralls with its unforgettable portrait of a young woman in search of herself.
The Good Wine, An Artist Comes of Age, delivered the next stage of her life from the age of 40 from 1950 to 1991. It recounts her year of full-time painting in Europe; encounters with Dorothy Sayers and Arnold Toynbee; friendships with Bora Laskin and Boyd Neel. The second installment of her biography is as enchanting as the first.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
A Brilliant, Gentle Pleasure.......1999-12-14
Doris McCarthy's two-part autobiography is a joy! It is at least as much about life as it is about art, teaching art and working at being an artist. Wonderful stories of her 80 years of old and new friendships, escapades, struggles & travels fill both volumes ("A Fool in Paradise" and "The Good Wine.") Her sharp and honest (but warm) wit lightens even the stories of difficult times with her family, the war years, school administrations and art societies.
Now recognized as one of Canada's finest landscape painters, Ms. McCarthy has no hesitation in sharing with us her struggles "to get things right" in her paintings. Her openness about the challenges of being an artist is a real inspiration and her humility about her work is refreshing given her status!
As a final note it is only fair to say that when I first began to read these books I wondered if it was only because Ms. McCarthy was one of my outstanding art teachers that I felt so delighted in her story. However long before I even started the second volume I knew that she had such a well-written, fascinating story that its appeal reaches far beyond the arts community. Well worth every moment of the read!

Tracing the dramatic lives, through 500 years, of the old and distinguished Sephardic Jewish family from whom he is descended, Perera brilliantly recreates the history not only of his own people but of an entire culture.
Customer Reviews:
The Pear Tree is ripe for the pickin..........2007-10-10
Great book,I was very interested in the premise after a friend bought it for me as a gift. I really enjoyed the book's flow and the Sefardic postmodern experience through the authors eyes. As I have written before the Sefardic experience is "complicated" to say the least. This experience can only be truly described by a fellow Andalusian Jew. I highly recommend this book for those who want to understand the complexities of being an Iberian Sefardic Jew. The Book reads easily and its a fascinating account of one of many families that are in exile both from Israel and from our beloved Sefarad. A true joy to read and relish in.
note: The duality between the Families having both Jews and Christians in it is very real to this day. Check out the cover.

An Excellent Book.......1998-10-18
I read this book just after it was published. Victor Perera's life and background are of interest to all who have an interest in family, history and the journeys of generations. Whether the reader is of Jewsh, Spanish or Portoguese background, he will find things in this book which will astound him. Read this book!
