Book Description
This is the compelling true story of Stephen G. Warren, as he rises from naval aviation cadet to Brigadier General in a distinguished 32-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps. Throughout World War II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, and terrorism at UCLA, Warren faces the savagery of war with fortitude and courage. Warren flies combat missions with distinguished aviators Charles Lindbergh, Capt. Bill Freeman, and Major Joe Foss in the South Pacific, later joining the elite USMC Phantoms jet stunt team. But the opportunities of peacetime are soon abridged by the Korean conflict where he earns the Purple Heart, and later flies in MIG Alley. The saga continues as Warren commands the Red Devils squadron in Hawaii, and the NROTC at UCLA, where he is aided by then-Governor Ronald Reagan as provocateur-led student riots and explosive terrorism build to a crescendo; next come Washington, D.C., the Pentagon, and the Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV). This is the account of an authentic American hero.

A True Hero Speaks.......2003-11-11
FLYING INTO COMBAT WITH HEROES is a thrilling account by a genuine leader and warrior. Brigadier General Warren is the last of a dying breed. He bravely served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and also during one of the first early acts of terrorism on American soil. In the modest, laconic, matter-of-fact voice of a fighter pilot, Warren shares his insights and observations gleaned during three decades of service to his country.
Few people are aware that Charles Lindbergh who initially was against America's participation in a war with Hitler later served as a military consultant in the Pacific theatre helping to analyze aviation mishaps and improve tactics. Warren had several encounters with this celebrated aviator.
Warren's heroics during the Korean War read as if they came from the pen of James Mitchener in BRIDGES OF TOKO RI. However, Warren's were the result of his blood, toil, tears, and sweat!
During the violent anti-war demonstrations in 1970, then Colonel Warren commanded the Navy ROTC Unit at UCLA. A bomb ripped through one of the ROTC's locked spaces. While the bombing was attributed to the local Students for a Democratic Society, Warren offers a new possibility based on some undercover intelligence. It is possible that the bombing was the work of Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber!
FLYING INTO COMBAT WITH HEROES will inspire new generations that the freedoms we enjoy in America come with a price. Warriors, like Warren, sacrificed the easy life back home to ensure all Americans could enjoy our way of life. He lived duty, honor, and country with every breath. All Americans owe Warren a great debt of gratitude for his distinguished service. Every leader should read this fine book!

Book Description
Substance abuse comes in many forms, from the seemingly innocent morning cup of coffee to life-threatening drug addiction. Such abuses are linked with a wide range of health problems including fatigue, headaches, weight gain, high blood pressure, allergies, depression, canceror worse. Dr. Elson Haas has helped thousands recover from chemical dependency through what he calls the missing link in the American diet: detoxification. A fully updated edition of the best-selling classic, THE NEW DETOX DIET, provides specific programs for cleansing your body of sugar, nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, and other harmful toxins. The first step of detox is eliminating these destructive habits and replacing them with healthy alternatives through changes to your diet and lifestyle. This is easier said than done, of course, and Dr. Haas shows how to gently eliminate these habits and restore health using the body's natural healing process. Even after years of a damaging lifestyle or eating habits, you can break the cycle of addiction and achieve greater vitality, better relationships, and improved overall well-being.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to follow detox plan.......2005-08-23
I have been using the guidelines in this book to do semi-annual detoxes for the last two years.
Many of the detox diet books I have looked at are extremely complicated and require extensive advance planning and preparation. For a busy person, the plans are almost impossible to follow. I have found this book very useful because it provides some basic, easy-to-follow plans that can be followed while continuing most normal life routines.
I am moderately hypoglycemic and also find that the general detox plan in this book is easily modifiable so that I can receive the benefits without causing erratic blood sugar swings.
Good Summary for Detoxification.......2005-06-07
Dr. Elson Haas has helped thousands recover from chemical dependency through what he calls the missing link in the American diet: detoxification. His tried-and-true program set forth in THE DETOX DIET shows how to cleanse your body of sugar, nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, and other harmful toxins for improved health, energy, and well-being. For those who have experienced the diet's benefits and would like to make detoxification a lifestyle choice, THE NEW DETOX DIET presents a comprehensive plan for lifelong vitality.
Just OK.......2005-04-21
I am a health major and a lot of the information that is listed in this book is common knowledge. Yeah you shouldn't eat a lot of sugar or caffiene because it will make you feel bad. I read through this book several times and even though the information is useful for living a healthy lifestyle there is not a lot of information regarding what steps should be taken to detox completely. I do think however the food lists about what juices will work for what are interesting and I have tried those but other then that not too much in depth info here. At the end of the chapters there are guidlines for detoxing from substances and a lot of the information is simple stuff that is mentioned in nutritional textbooks as well as the Dietary guidelines for americans. If you want a book that is going to go in more detail about detox I would not recommend this one.
CLEAN UP!.......2004-01-06
Using too much of seemingly innocuous substances like coffee, tea and sugar can be addictive and may cause severe health problems over the long term. These include blood pressure abnormalities, mood disorders, headaches and fatigue.
The New Detox Diet is an informative practical guide on how to cleanse the body of the above substances, nicotine, alcohol and others in the most natural way. The book provides great recipes and helpful information on counteracting the side effects of detoxification, which can often manifest in extreme discomfort.
The detox programmes are presented in detail and includes pitfalls to watch out for. Based on the body's own healing processes, the approach is subtle and holistic, avoiding drastic cold-turkey methods. The various harmful items are treated chapter by chapter, and at the end of each the most relevant information for that particular substance is repeated in short form.
I found the author's suggestions of alternatives for the above substances and his tips for a healthier lifestyle quite positive and sensible. The New Detox Diet would be a worthy addition to your bookshelf if you wish to take responsibility for your own health.
Detox for everyone.......2003-03-10
This book presents an easy to follow guide to beginning a simple detox diet and proceeding further into juice or water fasting, should you desire. Very few special purchases are needed to follow the plan. The purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables are the main expense. Vitamins and supplements are listed that may be of benefit, but they are not a necessity. Herbs are briefly touched on. If you are interested in incorporating herbs in your plan you will need to seek an additional resource.
There are separate chapters on nicotine, caffeine, drug, sugar and alcohol withdrawal and detox plans and supplements discussed for each. Physical effects of using each of these products are described in a rational manner without preaching.
It is a sensible guide to beginning a new journey to healthier eating. I found the plan easy enough to follow without feeling deprived. The outline to transition into fasting will guide me when I am ready.
This is a small book, but surprisingly complete. There is a list of resources for in-patient detox centers as well as support groups for specific problems (drug abuse, etc.)

Customer Reviews:
Fun Foodie Read. Uneven suggestions. Lots Great Some dumb.......2004-12-27
`Chef's Secrets' is a cleverly edited book by caterer and writer Francine Maroukian, subtitled `Insider Techniques from Today's Culinary Masters' which has much to offer, some old chestnuts, and a few misguided suggestions.
The most important aspect of the book is how much you can take away from it upon a single cover to cover reading. I say this because like similar question and answer books, the text is not well organized for hunting down the answer to a particular question, as all sections are more anecdotal than they are systematic in content. Thus, the greatest advantage is gained by reading the book from cover to cover, from front to back, and absorbing a few new, useful techniques.
In doing this, I found much that was interesting in a `by the way' fashion. The first thing that struck me was the large number of contributors who have graduated from the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and Johnson and Wales. I believe over half graduated from an American culinary educational program, with these two institutions leading the list. I am certain this is a really major change in the culinary scene over the last 50 years. The second interesting observation was the number of times Wolfgang Puck was mentioned as a model of American culinary innovation and inspiration. This may come as quite a blow to the egos of Jeremiah Tower and the opinions of Jim Villas who tend to minimize Puck's serious contribution to the American culinary scene. That Alice Waters is mentioned once is no surprise. That Wolfgang is mentioned twice, more than any other living chef, is notable. The third interesting observation is the number of people who seem to have apprenticed with either Ducasse or Boulud. These two staging sponsors lead the list by a wide margin. All of this makes reading the contributors' thumbnail biographies and `More Secrets' sidebars interesting, but this is not the main show.
The primary point of the book is the eighty-two chapters, contain 82 culinary `tips' from 82 recognized experts among the American culinary elite. While the seven (7) `culinary masters' named on the cover are well known, the remaining 75 contributors are no slouches. All are serious master chefs or thoroughly vetted writers active today. And, it appears that all of these tips were solicited from the contributors directly by the editor. They are not extracted from the contributors' printed works. The tips are also laid out in great detail. Many are supported by illustrations; however, several of illustrations in these storyboards are less revealing than they might be.
One of the first problems I found with the book is that many of the `insider techniques' are pretty common knowledge to any foodie who has read a few good cookbooks and who dotes on the better Food Network shows such as `Good Eats', `Molto Mario', and `Sara's Secrets' by contributor Sara Moulton. Some good examples of this are the tips on how to peel ginger with a teaspoon, how to defrost meat, how to joint a chicken, how to crisp greens, and how to quickly ripen fruit. Some other tips are just a bit too specialized to be useful to a lot of people. One misleadingly titled example is a tip on how to perfectly roast a chicken that has relatively little to do with what everyone thinks of as `roast chicken'. What the author actually shows us is the classic Italian technique of roasting a deboned chicken under a weight. The following tip by Charlie Palmer on how to roast fowl comes much closer to what the average cook would expect from instructions on roasting birds. Another misguided suggestion is a technique for making an omelet by finishing it in a broiler, in much the same way as you may finish a frittata. I have read at least twenty different techniques for making an omelet, and not one of them finishes the dish in the broiler! This tip is one for the professional short order cook who has a constantly hot salamander at eye level. It is simply a waste of time and gas or electricity to start an omelet on the range and fire up the broiler to finish, especially since every expert on the face of the earth, from Julia Child to Elizabeth David to Jacques Pepin does their omelet on the range from start to finish.
This still leaves a lot of good tips to go around. Out of the 82 sections, I suggest that at least twenty will be of some value to the average foodie amateur. A professional cook may find more useful material, but they may also be already familiar with most of the tips. My favorite sections are on creating dried shrimp flakes to use as a seasoning; how to check the salinity of a curing solution; how to sear a fish in a stainless steel pan; how to turn out tender shrimp; how to use bacon to its best advantage while cooking beans; and how to re-establish a non-stick surface on a stainless steel or aluminum pan.
Just as I am especially fond of single subject cookbooks such as those dedicated to eggs or potatoes or biscuits or cupcakes or salmon, I especially enjoy these `tip' books; however, I find them less useful than the single subject books or the general giants such as `The Joy of Cooking' or `James Beard's American Cookery'. This book is fun, but it is not quite as good as Perla Meyers' `How to Peel a Peach' or Raymond Sokolov's `How to Cook'. Neither of these two books is perfect, but they are more sound as day to day counselors on important techniques.
Recommended as a foodie fun read for a weekend, with some good tips along the way.

The tomatoes are growing!.......2001-06-19
I'll admit it, gardening has not gone smoothly for me. I have trouble keeping houseplants alive, largely due to neglect. I don't have time for a garden that requires more tending than my children. And I live in an apartment. But there's always been something about growing my own tomatoes that has appealed to me. So when I saw this book, I thought why not? It is a comprehensive guide to growing produce for your table, in small manageable beds or in containers. Just my speed. Plus, it's all organic. No dangerous and expensive chemicals to keep in the house, no worry about toxic overflow onto the neighbor's balcony below.
Three months later, I have plants growing on my balcony. Growing WELL on my balcony. Not just tomatoes, but radishes, cucumbers, lettuce and pole beans (we're still waiting on the watermelon, but we only planted it last week), mostly in plastic storage tubs with holes drilled in the bottom. We've actually eaten some of them--just like they were grown in a great big garden, with actual ground! The advice in this book is very easy to follow, from what to grow your container veggies in to what varieties to plant (and you can actually FIND these varieties, unlike the froufrou ones recommended in some books that have to be specially shipped from Asia or Europe) and how to harvest them once they've produced. There's a guide to pests (even containers get them) and suggestions for controlling them naturally. The only piece of advice you need that this book doesn't have is this -- if you don't have a compost pile (which is unlikely if you live in a second floor apartment), you can buy humus mixed with manure at your local garden center and it works just as well. Now, buy the book and start growing!
A well organized book full of helpful tips and guidelines.......2000-06-06
I would not say this is the difinitive "kitchen garden book." But it does have a plethora of information. While many gardening books give examples of vegetable plots, this is the first one that photographs the site and then numbers all the plants. It makes it very clear which plant is which instead of having to guess. The book is organized in a straightforward manner from the planning to harvest. Their reference section is extremely comprehensive. One of the sections that I found particularly easy to read is the Plant Selection Guide for both herbs and vegetables. All of the plants are lined up with their basic planting requirements: planting depth, sun/partial sun, zones, etc. There is an interesting array of receipts that I will have to try..."Pear, Watercresss, and Lentil Salad" and "Root Vegetable and Apple Stew." Overall, this is a solid vegetable gardening book with loads of advice especially on herbs.

great cook book.......2007-05-22
I love this book. Pictures for every recipe and ingredients I can find at my local grocery store. Lots of fun going through for a shopping list, hard part is deciding what to make. Includes a kids' favorites section with dishes kids can help plan and make.
Definite must for on the go people!.......2006-11-07
This book is amazing. We have made four of the recipes so far and had four incredibly yummy meals and they took very little time and effort to do... just as it advertises. Go figure. By the time I get home from work the last thing I want to do is spend two hours making dinner, so I am very thankful to have found something like this.
My go-to cookbook.......2006-03-28
This cookbook has not failed me yet. I have tried about half of the recipes and would make all of them again. Only two meals needed a bit of extra spices, but that's an easy fix. The recipes are versatile, easy, have common ingredients, and each recipe is pictured as part of a well-balanced meal (giving those of us non-cretive types ideas on veggies or other sides). I recommend this book without reservations.
Simple - Easy - Great.......2005-12-27
I have never left a review before, but I had to write one about this book - All of the recipes are simple with easy to follow directions - And there are pictures to go along with every recipe - There is even a section of food for kids - Most of the ingredients are things that you are already going to have in your pantry - Fabalous must have for anyone who doesn't always have a lot of time -
Fast food, great taste!.......2005-10-26
I received this book at my bridal shower. I've since bought copies for many of my friends. I LOVE that every recipe has a picture and nutritional information. The ingredients are basic things that I always have in the pantry. The meals are quick, healthy and taste great. The directions are very easy to follow. I recommend this book hands down! LOVE IT!!!

Your A.D.D. Child.......2007-03-08
This was a great book, very helpful. I ordered one for my child's teacher and for his teacher next year so she could be reading it over the summer. I intend to give this book to each new teacher my child has and he is only in second grade.
practical and easy to read.......2007-01-10
After reading this book I feel more prepared to face the day to day challenges living with a child with ADD. This book offered practical ideas and easy to understand information about Attention Deficit Disorder. I have already utilized many of the ideas mentioned in the book. My only concern with this book was the publishing date. This book was published in the 90's. I am aware that a lot of new research has been done since this book was published so the chapter about medication is dated.
Best yet!.......2005-09-21
I've read many, many books (most recommended by my pediatrician) on this subject for my 2 sons who are affected. This is, by far, the best, most insightful book I've read yet on ADHD! I actually called and recommended THIS BOOK to my pediatrician!
If you have a child, or student, affected by ADHD, this is a MUST READ! It will change your perspective and help you gain the patience with that child that you thought was long gone.
I would also recommend Celebrate! ADHD by Kirk & Anita Martin.
Practical Help for Parents of ADD Kids.......2001-09-18
This was the best book on ADD my wife and I have read. It not only explained ADD in understandable terms, it also provided us with practical ways to help our child succeed at school, at church, and in society. We appreciated the examples given because they enabled us to explain our situation to others in ways that help others (family and friends) to understand that ADD is not a curse and that an ADD child is not damaged goods. This is a must-read for anyone related in any way to someone with ADD.

don't miss it.......2002-03-04
What a remarkable book this is. A comprehensive book about one of the greatest masters of 19th century-John William Godward.
The book contains a great collection of his works as high quality pictures as well as a comprehensive biography from his grandfather to the life of his family after his death in details. The book is well published and written.
Your library misses it.
Essential!.......2000-02-20
A well researched, beautiful book. Essential for anyone interested in the works of Godward.
The ravishing art is worth the price.......1999-05-13
The text of this book manages to be both dull and embarrassingly amateurish. But the paintings? They are spectacular. The book is worth owning even at this price simply for the art. It's high time Godward was recognized and appreciated, and this book will no doubt contribute much to his wider appeal.
A most fascination and plethoric capturing of the Man........1998-11-25
The Art of Squire Godward most endearing and some of the most lovely and well captured depictations of feminine beauty one able ever encountre. The delicacy of his renderings of the female figre, ripe breasts and firm thighs vissable just beneath their thin gauze-like dresses, reveals a decidedly observant Artist able rendre the beauty of God`s creation, His apotheosis, in its most idealised form.
A work of art.......1998-09-30
This book is itself a work of art. A Masterpiece. A must your art library
Book Description
In 1940, a young Harvard-educated American named Varian Fry, inexperienced and not at all certain that he possessed any courage, went on a secret mission to Marseille. There, with only three thousand dollars and a list of names, he was to help those who had fled Nazi Germany and were now trapped in southern France.
The list he took with him had been prepared by, among others, the Museum of Modern Art and Eleanor Roosevelt. It included most of the premier writers, painters, and scientists of Europe, many of them Jews—people like Marc Chagall and Max Ernst, Jacques Lipchitz, Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Arendt, Franz Werfel, André Breton, André Masson, and other sur- realists, and hundreds more. When Fry witnessed their plight, he became determined not just to give them immediate aid but to find ways for them to escape. Slowly he built up a group of people who could help, forging passports and finding secret paths across the Pyrenees into Spain and then to Lisbon.
Fry himself was constantly in great danger, but he seemed to experience a divine inspiration, achieving greatness and glimpsing immortality by acting as the hero he never thought he could be. His own government tried again and again to stop him and send him home, but he managed to continue his rescue operations for more than a year.
Only in the past decade has the world begun to honor Fry, who died in 1967. He is, for instance, the only American honored at Israel’s Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem, as one of the “Righteous Among the Nations.”
Using letters and records unavailable to anyone else, as well as interviews with numerous survivors, Sheila Isenberg has given us an inspiring story of how the brave and determined actions of one individual can help change the world.
Customer Reviews:
Isenberg's "Fry" inspires our own activism.......2002-03-01
This is a must book for book clubs and reading groups! Isenberg's writing is engaging as she tells of Varian Fry's dramatic actions that saved so many people from harm. But, more thrillingly, through skillful use of private documents, she shows her readers how a man who showed little previous signs of special distinction, not content to stay a bystander, was willing to put himself at risk to help strangers whose lives were in danger. The book will spark discussions, not only of the holocaust, but of our continuing search to lead ethical lives today in the face of widespread violence, famine and continuing human rights abuses.
a perfect book club choice.......2002-02-25
this story, of a true 'hero,' makes a compelling read. how amazing that fry managed to save so many important artists of the last century and was little known until isenberg's book. a good read while learning an important bit of our history. i will definitely recommend this to my book club.
An Inspiring Page-Turner.......2002-01-30
I read Sheila Isenberg's marvelous book, A Hero Of Our Own, in one sitting. What made it compelling was the author's logical, step-by-step approach to the stunning chaos of her hero's dilemma.
Varian Fry's defining year in Marseilles came alive line by line, stroke by inspiring stroke in clear logical matter of fact tones. The work is poignant and powerful, mythic documentary proof of a bona fide hero and his heroic friends confronting the petty viciousness of evil with clear-eyed will.
A beautiful important book. This is History as it ought to be written. Should be required reading in high schools and colleges round the globe.
"A Hero of our Own" by Sheila Isenberg.......2002-01-30
For someone like myself, who enjoys a really exciting story, preferably about a real person, one need go no further than to read "A Hero of Our Own" by Sheila Isenberg. Varian Frye, a not-so-ordinary American, feels impelled to leave his comfortable life as a writer and editor and go to France as a member of the Emergency Rescue Committe (ERC) and risk his life to save as many refugees (mostly Jews) as he can from the Nazis. Frye is the only American to be honored at Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust Memorial) because of his work in saving thousands of Jews. If I didn't know it was a true story, I'd think it was fiction because his adventures read like a fast-paced thriller, a veritable realization of the classic "film noir" of the forties. In fact, I feelthe book cries out to be made into a movie which I would be happy to see. Of course some of the book's revealed facts about our own State Department trying to keep refugee Jews from entering the United States when they knew it mean certain death was quite shocking and disturbing. However, all in all, I'd recommend the book to anyone who enjoys reading a fast-paced book about real heros and history.
a biography that's a page-turner.......2002-01-29
Varian Fry was an American hero, risking his life to save others, unrecognized during his lifetime, but, fortunately, with Isenberg's new biography, now about to become a well-known figure. Called the artists' Schindler, Fry saved about 1,500 artists, writers, teachers, labor leaders, activists, and others from Hitler -- Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, and Hannah Arendt among the group. A Hero of Our Own tells Fry's story in a lively, compelling style. One can't wait to turn the page to find out what happens in Nazi-ridden, Vichy-controlled Marseille 1940. Who will be saved? Who will be turned over to the Gestapo? Why did Fry risk his life? This book answers all these questions in a fascinating story that is well worth reading -- as Fry is well worth remembering and honoring.
