In November 1922 a momentous discovery, unlike any other before or since, changed our understanding of the ancient world. However, until now the marvelous story of Carter’s quest for Tutankhamun and its culmination in his unearthing of the intact, treasure-filled tomb has been told without a reliable account of the man behind the discovery and the myths that have surrounded it. Carter's legendary discovery in the Valley of the Kings and his painstaking clearance of the intact royal burial are the topic of this definitive biography.

IC Pain - Gone!!! (and so is other pain like neck and back).......2003-03-01
With over 30 years of IC pain, I was tolerating only water and green beans until I read this book. The author, an IC sufferer and doctor, includes a wealth of suggestions which I immediately was easily able to incorporate into my diet and life style. Yes, the foods IC sufferers cannot tolerate are listed in her book which I found very helpful!
As a high school teacher and a mother of a medical doctor, the knowledge I acquired in this book led me to a FOOD SUPPLEMENT which has STOPPED my IC pain-it's been over 8 years that I have been taking this, not to mention no more neck and back pain, severe menstrual pain, a decrease in allergies, a clearer complexion, etc. YES! - A miracle food supplement for me! Prior to the discovery of this food supplement, my urologist offered an option of removing my bladder and wearing an external bag! I was about to give up teaching because I felt like a zombie from the IC pain that awakened me every hour during the night, let alone, all the trips to the lavatory in between every high school class period! The food/drink/vitamin information in this book and the food supplement I discovered have stopped the IC pain, as well as other pain.
What a fabulous domino effect! I started noticing that this same food supplement was stopping other pains! Prior to my taking this food supplement, the orthopedist recommended that I have neck and back surgery after years of recurrent episodes of excruciating pain when repeated physical therapy sessions and pain medications failed to provide relief. To avoid surgery, I went to a chiropractor for the first time in my life which continued for five years with therapy visits required every two months to stay pain free. I then went to a neurologist for a second opinion of the chiropractor's progress on my neck and back. The neurologist said I would always need to be under the chiropractor's care if I was to avoid the neck and back surgery . . . until the FOOD SUPPLEMENT stopped my neck and back pain! I have not seen my chiropractor in over 8 years or any other doctor for neck and back pain since taking this food supplement!!!
I take one tablet after breakfast every day and I am pain free!!! Basically, it is a naturally-occurring substance in everyone's body that feeds the nerve endings so that they are healthy and pain free; but, in some people this substance does not replenish itself as fast as the body expends it and, thus, the pain. This food supplement is a naturally-occurring source of organically-bound dietary sulfur that replenishes this deficit without side effects. It contains no solvents, sugar, salt, yeast, wheat, corn, dairy products, coloring, flavoring, or preservatives.
A well-known urogynecologist in Connecticut who sees many IC patients refers her IC patients to me to supply them with this food supplement.
...
Thank you, Dr. Gillespie, for the knowledge in your book is what led me to discover this food supplement which has returned me to a normal life!!! I have been able to continue teaching which has allowed me to provide the financial support to meet the educational needs of my son who is now a Physical Education teacher and my daughter who is graduating this May from the University of Connecticut Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut, as a medical doctor and to support my husband as he was caught up in the corporate buyouts and found himself unemployed until he changed careers and is now a U.S. Post Office employee. I can only imagine where my family and I would be had I not read your book!
You will refer to her book over and over again - as I have!!!
(...).......2001-11-13
I came across this book 10 years ago at a seminar and have been giving it to patients ever since. It is very well-written especially for the layman, providing numerous things to think about it in the face of chronic bladder problems. Being a chiropractor, I also found it fascinating that Dr. Gillespie basically spells out the whole theory behind chiropractic care when she cites that the number one cause of bladder and prostate problems is low back problems! Using diagrams she shows how the nerves enamating from the lumbar spine enervate these areas of the body. Though she doesn't mention chiropractic care in her book, I had to laugh when I saw that she had, however unwittingly, totally validated the science and theory of Chiropractic care. Whatever the underlying cause of your bladder problem, you are likely to find some help with this book.
Must-Read Book for Anyone with IC or Cystitis!.......2001-03-21
This is a ground-breaking book written by a doctor who truly understands both bacterial and interstitial cystitis. Before the 1st edition of this book, the medical world was virtually silent on the subject, telling women it was all in their heads! Dr. Gillespie shows a deep understanding of the all-too-common and frequently mis-treated and/or over-medicated cystitis (urinary tract infection). Further, Dr. Gillespie virtually forced the medical world to learn about interstitial cystitis (IC) and to begin research into more humane and effective methods of treating it. Dr. G is a personal hero for me. Her book has provided guidance in my dealings with IC,where unfortunately most doctors still don't know what IC is. This book can help the patient to make decisions about treatments that can affect their body for many years to come. This book has helped me to minimize the occurrence of bacterial cystitis. And while my IC is incurable, this book has provided insight and helpful methods to make the condition less debilitating. Thanks for this ground-breaking book!!!
Please Beware.......2001-02-28
While the book does validate IC-which 10 years ago was relatively unknown, the treatments will not work for everyone. I believe everyone needs hope with this dreadful disease, and at a first pass, this book provides it. I must thank the doctor for that. I read the book, was a patient of the doctor, and followed the protocol for 2 years. ....
This book can change your life!.......1999-11-09
I suffered from recurrent bladder infections and the excrutiating symptoms even without the presence of bacterial infection for many years. I had massive long term antibiotic therapy, surgical procedures and saw several urologists - all without relief. My mother gave me this book in 1988 and I am so grateful to her and to Dr. Gillespie. This book changed my life! I now understand my condition and can manage it. Many doctors are unaware of IC or believe it to be very rare (it's not as rare as they think!). I still get 1-2 infections a year, but that is heaven compared to what I used to suffer. I can't recommed this book highly enough!
Book Description
Miles Lambert, author of Greek Salad: A Dionysian Travelogue, published by The Wine Appreciation Guild and due out in June, explores Greece via its tavernas "with the utility of a travel guide and the tone of a novel," says publisher Elliott Mackey.
Lambert begins the book with a light brunch of "flaky bougasta filled with sweetened semolina" aboard a ferry headed for the island of Tinos, a member of the Aegean Islands, and once there, he's dragged on an impromptu expedition into "prehistory" lead by a tavern proprietor named Andoni and his dog Rambo. From Tinos and "prehistory", Lambert then travels through the islands, onto the mainland, and then west to the Ionian Islands, ending the final chapter in a lower-class quarter of Corfu, drinking wine out of tumblers with his cab driver.
"Greece can be a highly amusing place to navigate about in," says the author, "and I wanted to portray that neglected side of the country and people as I've found them over the years. I've often been looking through the prism of taverna wine glasses, but it's a vantage point with a lot to recommend it, not least of all because of our recent fascination with the food and folkways of Mediterranean Europe. We shouldn't stop at Provence and Tuscany when so much in those cultures originated in the age-old Aegean world."

An Inimitable Feast for the Palette and the Dream.......2006-03-26
Miles Lambert-Gócs. If ever you longed to discover Greece with a guide who knew not only the history of Greece with all the Islands included but also manifested the same gusto for life that is part of the Greek heritage, then this very fine author is the one to take you there. GREEK SALAD: A DIONYSIAN TRAVELOGUE is so full of fascinating insights into Greek history, Greek personality, and of course Greek food that is truly Hemingway's 'moveable feast.'
It is one thing to write a travelogue that points the particularly splendid aspects of a country in your direction, but it is an entirely different one that is so full of spirit and tales that it also serves as a novel. Reading this book, yes, encourages calling a travel agent post haste, but it also is such a well written piece of literature that it can be appreciated simply for the repast it provides. Lambert-Gocs is a wise, informed, ebullient connoisseur of wines and foods: he is also a sprite that opens the joys of Greece like few others. Highly recommended reading! Grady Harp, March 06
All the ingredients mix.......2005-03-25
A satisfying chunk of black volcanic rock never leaves my desk. I picked it up personally on the Greek island of Santorini, where steam still percolates from the ground some twenty-five hundred years after the island exploded, upending the Aegean world. You can believe my powerful paperweight is the match of even the most truculent culinary book. It has certainly helped me plumb the depths of Greek Salad, a "Dionysian Travelogue" by American wine writer Miles Lambert-Gócs. Lambert roams Greece-the Aegean islands, the mainland, the Ionian islands-in an attempt to transmit, even amplify, a taste of Greece into accessible English prose. The result-even if you can taste Greece only vicariously-is the stuff of persistent reverie.
Taken individually, Lambert's 26 vignettes could only succeed in generating dramatic tension, unless, like me, you retain taste memory of a challenging retsina from Rhodes, or the best yogurt you have ever ingested. The whole of Greek Salad, though by rights it should be at least a coffee-table book (it is a tight small-format paperback), succeeds as it satisfies. I read just yesterday that recent surveys found Greeks, both male and female, to be on average even heavier than Americans. Evidently, Greeks do a lot of eating and drinking. The way Lambert tells it, the food, the wine, the soul of Greece do not spring fully-formed from a laminated restaurant menu; they are animated by earth, sea and sky. If you find yourself in Greece, you might as well eat, and wash it down with wine that originates just a stone's throw from your table. You can work it all off in the gym on your return.
Lambert has the imagination and scope to extol both the obscure and the predictable. Nearly every American "Greek diner" I have ever turned to as refuge from the night has offered a credible mousaka, a hybrid dish Lambert examines lightheartedly in his chapter on Larissa, on the Greek mainland in Thessaly. "Mousaka," Lambert writes, "certainly cannot lay with the en croute delicacies; but on the other hand it does not sink with the fluid casseroles either. Sometimes it seems to slide in between the terrines and pâtés...However, the rarer low-built mousaka, with its slim strata, cuts nicely on the bias and, if highly flavored with sweet spices, can for all the world seem a soft, non-stick baklava." If detail is delicious, Lambert serves up a feast, even if we want to pardon the author's French.
Or ferry-hop to the Aegean island of Syros, which Lambert visits for a second, longer look after having guiltily given the island short shrift in a previous incarnation. Here Lambert is hosted by shipping magnate John Vatis, who, after having acquired a taste for chardonnay in California, has fostered a wine-culture on the island. Vatis cultivates his vines "under Israeli conditions-no water and very bad land," using elaborate drip irrigation systems combined with the best technology money can buy. At the outset, a California enologist had informed Vatis that the "official" temperatures on the island were far too hot for chardonnay. But that was before the enologist visited the island and "found himself needing a jacket on the veranda in the evening-and before John discovered that the temperature readings were taken in the daytime in a stuffy nook downtown." At lunch, John's wife Helen prepares that other food I find on Greek diner menus: "pastitsio of a quality above what even an inveterately hopeful fan of Greek dishes might imagine that pastitsio has in it" (and a far cry from my own pale experience in American eateries).
Greek Salad handily transcends the American notion of "Greek food and wine," and yet I find a strong Greco-American thread throughout the book. Lambert sweeps through Greece not only as a journalist but also as a representative of the United States Department of Agriculture, a role that forces him on occasion to visit food processing plants, consume their output, and say nice things about it. We Americans love foreign references to our homeland, and Lambert provides them, from the Greek sailors who wax fondly over their visits to US ports, to Lambert's own habitual pilgrimage from his home in Virginia to a Greek wine shop in Astoria, New York, where he crams his car trunk with viniferous products he simply cannot live without. Writers always have a choice of perspective, voice and personal character; Lambert's is one of honest immediacy. The writing is unapologetically personal, vivid, experiential; therein lies the problem, since the only meal we really get to eat is composed of words rather than olive oil and lamb. Those of us who can't quite swing a leisurely voyage to Greece had better hope PBS drafts Lambert to host a thirteen-part series soon.

Let's All Have a Great Time in Greece!.......2004-10-12
In "Greek Salad," Miles Lambert provides some of the expert commentary enjoyed previously in his first book, "The Wines of Greece," but in this volume lets us join him, personally, in his quest for great Greek wines in the classical and modern traditions. His witty insights and delightful references to ancient and more recent writers, from the likes of Aristophanes and Homer, through travelers on "the Grand Tour," such as Lord Byron and others, will no doubt bring a sense of keen recognition and delight to most of his readers. Authored by a master of English with a considerable command of Greek language and culture, "Greek Salad" makes me want to jump on a plane, and then catch a boat, to seek out "tavernas" of my own and experience some of the Greek places, wines, and foods our "Odysseus of the Wine Jars" so deliciously and entertainingly describes.
Dionysian Travelogue Indeed.......2004-09-14
From the Aegean Islands to the Ionian Islands, with mainland Greece in between, Miles Lambert shares his travels and reveals a land where the regional food, wines, and its tavernas are all rooted and bound in the rich histories and lore of Greece.
The simple yet evocative prose made me envision the dog-eared journal pages stained by a hearty red, or the sun-baked vistas and salty villages the author describes.
While France and Italy have all been the backdrop for other travel diaries, it is time that Greece recieves its due recognition. This book is a wonderful exploration of a place that has so much to offer at every turn of a page.

This book is fantasic!!.......2003-04-13
This book has a guide to dog breeds, how to care for your dog, and other helpful things. It has full color photos that are helpful to identify certain breeds. Although I don't own a dog this book comes in handy a lot. There are other books in this series if you are interested, but if you don't own one in this series I recommend you get one.
Good introduction to breeds and caring for your dog.......2002-04-13
Part One gives you infromation on how dogs evolved, understanding canine behaviour, healthcare, feeding, grooming and exercising your dog.
Part Two gives you information about 90+ different breeds. The breed guide give you a size comparison (comparing the dog's height with that of and "average adult and child"). My question to the author is what is "average". The breed guide also gives you the breed's temperament, excerise required, watchdog capability, grooming/trimming, preferred enviroments for the breed, and the size and weight of the breed. It also gies you a good representative of the breed, and the breed's (AKC) name.
Some breed descriptors are erroneous such as the Jack Russell Terrier would be "ideal for apartment living", and the Pug "doesn't shed much". I advise anyone to go to a JRT rescue group and ask why this breed is not suitable for apartment living if they don't understand why. The JRT is simply has too much energy, and needs to romp in a big fenced backyard. Also, go into a pug owner's house and you will probably see little fawn and/or black hairs all over thier house. Pugs, like Dalmatians, are notorius shedders.
Overall, I would have to give this book three stars. It is a good and colourful introduction to different breeds, but has some simple errors about breeds in it. To supplement this book I would purchase the "Encyclopedia of the Dog" by Bruce Fogle and "Your Purebred Puppy : A Buyer's Guide" by Michele Welton.
EXCELLENT book!.......2001-11-18
I bought this book (...) and it's been such a help! It tells you about the breeds history, their temperament, the exercise needed, grooming requirements, and much more. Color photos for each breed as well.
I definatly recommend this book. I can't even count the number of times it's come in handy.
An excellent resource.......2000-07-30
We use this book at home to "look up" dogs we do not recognize, and to look up dogs that people talk about that we may be unfamiliar with. There are lots of pictures so even the kids use it. It has a lot of pertinent information about each breed, including origin, size, weight, and recommendations for pet owners. I will probably order another....just in case the first one walks off.

Darlene Arden is widely acknowledged as an authority on small dogs, and is the author of many books and articles about dogs and their care. A member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, she is a certified animal behavior consultant and a regular contributor to Animal Radio Network.
Words of Appreciation for this book and its predecessor include:
"The voice of experience speaks about the hidden (and not so hidden) life of Toy dogs. Darlene Arden's sensible and practical advice is a must for would-be Toy dog owners. -Dr. Nicholas H. Dodman, Tufts University, Author of The Dog Who Loved Too Much
"Small Dogs, Big Hearts is an invaluable treasure of information… It includes every aspect of puppy care from infancy through adulthood. It is precise, beautifully written, and easily understood by both the professional dog exhibitor and the owner of a beloved family pet. Every person who contemplates purchasing a dog or who has a dog should own this book." - Victor Joris, AKC Toy Group Judge.
"Darlene Arden has come up with an informative book which, just like the little creatures that inspired it, manages to be of serious intent and at the same time entertaining. A thorough instruction manual for small dogs in general, it delves into the breed-specific joys and idiosyncrasies of these mini-sized canine charmers as well."- Lilian Barber, Author, The Italian Greyhound, 21st Century.
"For anyone who has owned a small dog, the best book ever written has been written by Darlene Arden." - Martha Smith, Providence Journal Bulletin.
"At last, we have a book devoted to Toy dogs written by an authority on Toy dog care…This book would be a worthwhile addition to any dog fancier's library." - Glenna Fierheller, Dogs in Canada.
"Arden's breezy, unassuming portrait of the Rodney Dangerfields of dogdom captures everything from their blue-collar feistiness to their charming insouciance." - Ranny Green The Seattle Times.
"If you've never considered yourself a 'small dog person,' this book could change your mind. If you've always loved Toys, you'll feel vindicated. And if you're considering a change of dog to a smaller breed this book will help you to avoid what could be fatal mistakes. The Irrepressible Toy Dog provides good advice for anyone with a dog, but for the Toy person it's a gift of understanding that will shatter the myth that all little dogs are or should be nasty, snappy brats. Brava!" -Karen L. Overall, MA, VMD, PhD University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
A Howell Dog Book of Distinction.

Ms. Arden has done it again..........2007-01-07
As the owner of 4 small dog rescues, I have found all of Darlene Arden's books extremely helpful and "small dogs, big hearts" is certainly no exception. It is filled with valuable information and should be a must read for anyone who has or is even remotely thinking about getting a small dog. Like all her books, this one is well written in Ms. Arden's easy to follow and understand style. I especially like the fact that this book contains mixed breeds and all the pictures are a wonderful addition.
I applaud Darlene Arden for emphasizing that these small breeds are not toys to be played with, but real dogs with real dog issues and needs.
Very Good Resource, Extensive Health Info.......2007-01-02
I was very anxious to get this book. In fact by the time I realized there was a second edition of the Irrepressible Toy Dog, I had been waiting several months. This lead me to several other small dog/ breed specific books. This book is definitely top notch However, I was a little biased having read similar information in several other books before reading this book. This made me less excited about its content, however I have to say that it is extremely well compiled, lots of good information and has the best health section on small breed specific disease that I have seen to date. The picture sections are cute, however it could have included more breeds instead of the same breeds over and over. It however was not as much fun as other books, and lacks in the training section when compared to other books. It is a great overall guide on toy dogs and every toy dog owner should keep a copy for a reference guide.
better than the first.......2006-11-23
The diva of diminutive dogs does it again. This new edition is even better than the first, with more information on socialization and training, and wonderful color photos. Kudos for including small mixes among the purebreds, and for telling everyone that small dogs are real dogs, too. Anyone considering adding a small dog to their household should read this book.
Must Read.......2006-09-15
This updated version of Ms. Arden's book is a must read for all people who are owned by a small dog. This edition includes several pages of delightful color photos and a a great list of resources for pampering your little dog!
Great book for first-time toy dog owners.......2006-08-23
I hate to be the voice of negativity among all the GREAT raves that this book got. I actually bought this book based on the reviews by other customers. It is a good book and specifies unique needs of small (especially toy) dogs. HOWEVER, as is often the case with an all encompassing book, this book would be great for first-time owners of toy dogs. I enjoyed the original edition which convinced me to get a toy dog (Papillons). If you are an experienced toy dog owner, you would only get a few things out of this book. This is the problem I find with these kind of books. It gets repetitive for the avid dog-book reader. The book doesn't address the intelligence of dogs and just glosses over each breed's characteristics. The photos in the books were great though.

The Little Guides CATS .......... Molly's Reviews.......2005-02-11
Informative Read ........Highly Recommended 5 stars
The Review
The Little Guides: CATS is a 320-page work divided into three sections. Part 1: 55 pages `All About Cats,' presents a synopsis of the modern 36 species cat family.
Section two: 145 pages: is the `Cats as Pets' segment and includes information important to those who choose to be owned by a domesticated cat.
Section three: 70 pages: offers more detailed information pertaining to particular breeds of cats.
As a cat owner and cat lover myself I particularly enjoyed this book. Excellent choice for cat owners or one considering becoming a cat owner.
Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.
A Great book for cat lovers!.......2003-04-10
This book is a great guide to cats. It comes in handy if you want to adopt a cat or kitten. You should look for other books in this series!
Very Nice Picture Reference Book.......2002-10-13
This handy little book has a tremendous amount of information on cats. Every breed is displayed including wild cats. Information on caring for cats is included. If you have never owned a cat and are contemplating adopting one this is an excellent reference book to have. If you are a cat owner you will learn things you never knew.
A nice reference for cat lovers and cat owners.......2000-04-17
"The Little Guides: Cats" is intended primarily as an informative reference book for cat owners, although, as a cat lover, I also enjoyed just browsing it for interesting tid-bits.
The book is divided into three parts:
1) All About Cats (20 pages): This section talks about the biological history of cats, cats in general, and cats in the wild.
2) Cats as Pets (146 pages): The heart of the book, this section discusses cat health, behaviour, and ownership.
3) Cat Breeds (104 pages): A catalog of different short haired and long haired cats.
The book ends with a glossary, and information directory, and a very useful index.
This is certainly not the most detailed book on cats available. In that respect it may be more useful to inexperienced pet owners or else as a handy reference. Still, the book does cover most of the issues that pet owners will face, including litter-pan training, common diseases, and pregnancy, to name a few.
Often the book will be directed a bit more to pedigreed cats than mixed breeds. The book includes information about showing your cat and the extensive catalog of breeds. The cat care section, though, is equally applicable to any cat.
Throughout the book has lots and lots of good pictures as well as clear diagrams. The text is clear and well written.
All in all, an enjoyable little book for cat lovers and a useful guide for cat owners.
Customer Reviews:
I LOVE THESE GUIDES!!!.......2002-12-14
I am completely delighted with "The Little Guides" series. The format is extremely user friendly, and each guide is packed with useful and interesting information. I enjoy reading them, but my 6 year old daughter gives them the most use. While the guides are written at an adult level, there is plenty that she can read and understand. I currently own "Sharks," "Birds," "Mammals," "Space," "Whales," and "Flowers."
"Whales" has three parts: 1) Whales and Their World, which include a general introduction on whales, a section on whale anatomy and senses, and a section on whale behavior; 2) Kinds of Whales; and 3) Whales and People, which covers whale lore and legends, protecting whales, observing whales, and whale watching sites.
This guide is packed with useful information, and is a great resource of adults as well as children!

Judy Holmes presents a great deal of helpful ideas in a condensed, easy to read book. She herself practices medium format photography but the principles apply as well to 35mm. Book Description
Following the format and success of MBIs 101 Harley-Davidson Performance Projects (0-7603-0370-3) and 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 (0-7603-0853-3), this new title gives model railroaders a treasury of weekend projects spanning everything from bench framing to wiring, assembling buildings, creating realistic ground covers, superdetailing locomotives, and running the railroad. Each project includes a handy table detailing the time (anywhere from one to eight hours), tools, materials, money, skill level, and space required for successful completion. In addition, for every project, the author provides explanations of why the reader should undertake the task, what he or she can expect upon completion, and suggestions for complementary projects.

Not really 101 projects.......2005-12-22
I just received this book and was really looking forward to a lot of different projects. I was disappointed that some of the projects in this book were slight variations of each other, and in fact there was one project for HO and larger scale immediately followed by the exact same project in N scale.
Overall there is a lot of good information - but I wouldn't total them to be 101

Agapanthus for Gardeners
ASIN: 0881926310 |
Book Description
Known as "lilies of the Nile" (though they're native to South Africa), the showy perennials in the genus Agapanthus have been avidly collected and grown since they were discovered by Dutch explorers in the 17th century. The few species in the genus have been hybridized intensively, yielding hundreds of interesting and dramatic cultivars. Despite their huge popularity among gardeners, however, there has never been a truly comprehensive book on the genus, an oversight that has finally been corrected by author Wim Snoeijer, working in concert with Holland's Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society. With keys and more than 100 color photos as an aid to identification, this groundbreaking book is one no devotee of these plants can afford to be without.

Customer Reviews:
Great buy!!! Very Funny!.......2006-12-21
I found an article in Cosmopolitan Magazine with advice from Dr.Bree. I decided to buy her book and found it very helpful.
On hating other women.......2006-01-30
This is a pretty hostile book as one can see from the cover, if you really want to hate other women because you share a common affection for the same man (her son and your husband) buy this book right away! You will be sure to live out your hostilities with permission; however, if you are not willing to wallow in such aggression, maybe buy a book that is better balanced and thus help yourself to achieve a balance that is more healthy for you and your family.
This will make you laugh!.......2005-10-26
If you are a DIL (daughter in law) with a slightly off or overbearing MIL (mother in law) you found the right book. It is an easy read and you will laugh outloud because there will be at least 5 stories you will relate to. You realize that most MIL's are all crazy. And the stories are so funny.
Layman for Sure.......2005-03-29
The book is advertized as being written in layman's terms. For sure that must be because it was written by someone who had no idea what she was talking about. I'm sure she experienced some bad mother-in-law or something, but her book is written like a bad article from a teen magazine. In addition to the spelling and grammar mistakes, this book is all about "dissing" the MIL instead of resolving issues. The stories were sometimes funny, but I dreaded each time I had to read a part of the book actually written by the author.
Very Helpful and Entertaining at the same time.......2004-10-07
This book is a compilation of stories about mother-in-laws that's been very helpful for my new fiance and I. The stories were eye-opening as to what to expect when we get married, and some were quite hilarious. We're already having some of the same problems with my mom. "How to Deal With Your Mother-in-law" is a must have for anyone who is going to get married anytime soon. The funniest book I've read in a while!

Plutonium: A History of the World's Most Dangerous Element
ASIN: 1884092624 |
Book Description
Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Richard Altschuler & Associates, Inc./ Gordian Knot Books
On the Cutting Edge presents a series of true stories providing the first account of many of the major programs and projects that have made the last sixty years an era of remarkable progress in the aerospace arena. Robert F. Brodsky, an internationally known scientist, engineer, and teacher, brings a unique perspective to this book, since in each of the world-changing events discussed, he was a firsthand observer or participant. Written in an accessible style, Brodsky’s account begins with the start of the computer and atomic ages and progresses chronologically through the subsequent ages of guided missiles and space.
Through a series of interrelated narratives, readers learn about the conquest of the sonic barrier, why the space age started when it did, details of a rescue from a space station, how astronautics became a legitimate academic discipline, the inevitable rise of the hydrogen economy spurred by fusion, and the great aerospace events of the past century. On the Cutting Edge also includes descriptions of little-known historical events, such as the use of the atom bomb by the United States in Mexico, and of the many technological developments of the 1960s that are just now coming to fruition.

A Tale Well Told.......2007-07-22
Very interesting and entertaining set of career experiences as told by one of the greatest engineer's ever. Probably not for everyone, but anyone who has been a part of the Aerospace industry would enjoy the telling of Dr. Bob's career. Well writen, articulate and informative. I purchased four more copies for gifts to young engineers that might write something similar in 50 or so years.
An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities .......2007-05-08
Written by engineer, educator, and arms race/spacecraft design pioneer Dr. Robert F. Brodsky, On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer and Space Ages is a collection of true tales of the author's professional experiences. Active in the atomic and space race from 1950 to 1988, and not really retired up to even the present day, Brodsky gives an insider's view of everything from the creation and fixing of the first externally carried A-Bomb (the Mark 7) to the inception of the Space Age to how astronautics became an accredited curriculum to Brodsky's visions of a hydrogen-fuel based economy in the future. An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities behind the military and space age science that transformed the modern world, accessible to readers of all backgrounds and highly recommended.
a notable pioneer.......2007-01-15
The book is a collection of anecdotes and snippets from Brodsky's long professional life, commencing during World War 2 and proceeding past the end of the Cold War. He gives an insider's look at what it was like to work in the American defense industry. Notably the aerospace milieu of southern California. But also in the nuclear weapons program at Sandia, New Mexico. Having worked briefly at Los Alamos, but decades after he was at Sandia, his accounts brought back fond memories of New Mexico.
He was also involved in some of the earlier postwar uses of computers. Like programming ENIAC for the first Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations. A total dinosaur of a machine by current standards. But truly cutting edge at the time.
There is a brief mention of wind tunnel tests he did in Pasadena, Los Angeles. How times change. That wind tunnel building is now the south campus of the Arts Center College of Design. I was there recently for a reception. Few of the current students appreciate the history of that building, and its crucial contributions to the US war effort during World War 2, and later in the Cold War.

Book Description
Growing up in the Bronx, there was instilled in Norman Brodsky a sense of humor, which has allowed him to wryly narrate his life observations and experiences.
His comical slant on everyday occurrences can be hysterical. He has a way of telling a story that invokes nostalgia for a long bygone Bronx. Subsequent college experiences and the zany things that happened at work, all give him an opportunity to offer his insights and to shine a spotlight on whatever was funny or interesting.
In telling the anecdotes of events he remembers so well, we gain insight into the sum of his life. He especially delights in revealing the humiliating things that he has endured. This is the essence of the self-deprecating humor which reveals the human being that dwells in him.
Here at the age of seventy, Brodsky looks back and relates the amusing things that define his humor. His was an interesting life observing the foibles of his time. In all, the totality of his life is assembled here in such a way that we feel that we know him.

Treblinka Escapee Traverses the Polish Countryside with Minimal Difficulty.......2007-09-20
Richard Glazer, a Czech Jew, mentions his life in German-occupied Prague and then his arrival at Treblinka. Naked for the "shower", he gets pulled out of the line to the gas chamber by an SS man, and diverted to forced labor. Glazer then elaborates his experiences in Treblinka, giving a particularly good description of typhus and how it flourishes under the unsanitary conditions and is spread by lice (pp. 72-73). Glazer escapes Treblinka during the famous August 1943 revolt. He eventually gets caught by a Volksdeutsche, but avoids the death sentence for being a Jew, and ends up a forced laborer in Germany, where he is liberated. Glazer also recounts his "reunion" with 54 still-living Treblinka escapees during the trials of the Nazi war criminals in West Germany in the 1960's (pp. 195-196).
Some Polish Jews discussing the possibility of escaping from Treblinka tried to discourage it by sinking to new lows of Polonophobic mythmaking. They actually asserted that Poles who help Jews no longer exist at all, and that 9 out of 10 Poles betray Jews (p. 84)--all without even stopping to think about the self-refuting nature of their absurdities. Just two sentences earlier, they had spoken about Jews who had escaped from Treblinka and returned to the Ghettos to warn the remaining Jews there (p. 83). If anything other than a trivial fraction of Poles betrayed Jews (let alone 9/10) then no Jews who escaped from Treblinka would've survived more than a day!
In contrast, some Jews who contemplated the possibility of escaping from Treblinka had a realistic view of the situation. They recognized the fact that killers of fugitive Jews in the areas surrounding Treblinka were not, as often alleged, members of the Polish Underground (the AK and NSZ). They were simply bandits, many of whom pretended to be members of the AK and NSZ, and who killed both Jews and non-Jews at will: "A few kilometers farther into the woods you would come upon the partisans, and then a gang with nothing in common with partisans than the name. They rob, and they murder; they don't care whom they attack by night." (p. 105)
When Richard Glazer actually escaped from Treblinka, he spent much time traversing the Polish countryside. He describes his peregrinations and the help he received from Poles. He passed by a long series of Polish villages, including Ostrow (p. 149), Wiszkow, Radzymin (p. 150), Rembertow, Solejuwky (p. 151), "...Piaseczno, Gora Kalwaria, Grojec, Mogielnica--those are the exotic-sounding names of towns passed through, more or less without incident." (p. 153). He had to evade a column of Germans. Yet not once did he indicate any threat from Polish blackmailers or denouncers. And, when he was finally caught, it was not by a Pole but by a Volksdeutsche. (p. 153)
an interesting look at life in treblinka extermination camp.......2007-02-16
This book is just as excellent and disturbing as Willenburg's "Surviving Treblinka", but it has a different feel about it. Its almost as if he is telling the story as a detached observer, which, in some cases, caused the survival of many Nazi victims. It is very detailed but, amongst the suffering among the few prisoners chosed to sort the clothing of the dead, there is a hope you get out of it. There were of course prisoners who has to work in Camp 2, where the gas chambers were located and those prisoners has to unload the chambers and put them in mass graves, later replaced by huge pyres, also called the roasts. But Glazar worked in Camp One, first sorting clothes, and then getting a better position working in one of the sheds where packaged belongings were stored until the objects could fill up a train to head back to Lublin headquarters. One of the most interesting chapters is called "The Hangmen and the Gravediggers", where Glazar, while working in this shed, encountered and actually had relatively normal conversation and mingling with SS men who worked the camp. This chapter describes many SS men, calling some terrible, while others were not as bad as others. Corruption was the name of the game; that is, SS men would come to this shed to get fine clothing and other objects and would often keep them of send them home to their families. This practice was extremely against SS regulations, but it happened anyway. The rest of the book is very interesting as well, such as when Glazar was assigned to the forest brigage, who would collect pine branches and such to camoflauge the fences of the camp. The evolution of the revolt is great, despite terrible things that happended in the course of organizing the revolt, such as military leader of the revolt, Zhelo Bloch, a Jewish captain of the Czech Army, being sent to Camp 2, with its gas chambers and dead bodies everywhere, as punishment for numerical errors that occured one day when trains were being loaded up with the stolen goods of the Jews, trains that would go to Lublin and spread from there. And there was also the death of Dr. Chorozycki. He was found in possession of money that to be used in the purchase of arms to be used in the revolt. Kurt Franz made the discovery and the doctor attacked Franz with a surgical knife and blows from his fist, a great act of courage. The doctor managed to slip some cyanide tablets and he died before the SS could torture him, to try to get information from him. Terrible indeed, but the revolt still took place...ive said enough, just read this book! You will not be disappointed, particularly if you are already interested in the subject of the Holocaust. I would suggest anyone read it though. The book is depressing, but, to me atleast, the way it is told seems almost detached, and theres even monents of dark humor thrown in here and there, atleast thats how i percieve it. A moving book to say the least. Get it!
A Treblinka Buff.......2004-04-27
I read everything there is about Treblinka and I can tell you that this is one of the best accounts yet. Other alternatives are "A year in Treblinka" and Arad's "Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka: Aktion Reinhard Death Camps". Steiner's Treblinka is a very enjoyable work of fiction (but historicaly inacurate).
Star Witness in Claude Lanzmann's epic film, Shoah.......2002-07-19
None of the previous reviewers seem to know that Richard Glazar, a young Czech, is one of the most effective eyewitnesses in Claude Lanzmann's epic masterpiece, 'Shoah.' He appears at numerous points during the parts of the film that deal with Treblinka. What comes across is his vitality, integrity, and self-awareness. He was one of the few to survive the Treblinka revolt in August 1943 in which several hundred prisoners finally managed to break out, although most did not finally survive. Glazar appears too in interviews with Gitta Sereny, 'Into that Darkness,' in her study of Franz Stangl, the commandant of Treblinka. Glazar's work is utterly authentic and a MUST READ.
Holocaust Deniers Beware!.......2000-01-11
Richard Galzar, a Jew from Prague, survived for 10 months as a clothes-sorter in Trebinka, until his escape in the breakout of August 1943. While not a professional writer, his clear, strongly written account is an excellent source for true students of Holocaust history. The above reviewer either has not read the book or clearly seeks to defame this author, as is typical with Holocaust Deniers.
