Finding Balance in an Unbalanced World.......2002-10-23

The beauty of this book is its comprehensive approach to the subject of Yoga. While this book's focus is on Asana and Pranayama, the reader is left in no doubt that there is more to Yoga than that. It has a direct approach and economy of language which makes it ideal for beginners. However, the essence of the subject is never lost so that serious students of Yoga can read it many times over and still see something new in the old. What is special about this book is its systematic, logical approach with its emphasis on adaptation for individual needs. Two key components of this approach are the importance of correct breathing and developing the right balance of strength and flexibility. This book also has a chapter on meditation which may be a revelation even for some experienced Yoga practitioners. These days there seem to be very few of them who are aware that the ultimate aim of a Yoga practice is meditation. This book makes it clear that the practice of Yoga in its broadest sense provides us all with the tools we need to stay physically and mentally balanced in the face of a rapidly changing world.

This is one of the very best yoga books for those interested in a comprehensive and integrated view of yoga philosophy, asana practice and pranayama as a classical means of personal development and transformation still relevant for today. Mohan was a long time student of Krishnamacharya.

Surely no stranger work exists in the annals of protest literature than The Master and Margarita. Written during the Soviet crackdown of the 1930s, when Mikhail Bulgakov's works were effectively banned, it wraps its anti-Stalinist message in a complex allegory of good and evil. Or would that be the other way around? The book's chief character is Satan, who appears in the guise of a foreigner and self-proclaimed black magician named Woland. Accompanied by a talking black tomcat and a "translator" wearing a jockey's cap and cracked pince-nez, Woland wreaks havoc throughout literary Moscow. First he predicts that the head of noted editor Berlioz will be cut off; when it is, he appropriates Berlioz's apartment. (A puzzled relative receives the following telegram: "Have just been run over by streetcar at Patriarch's Ponds funeral Friday three afternoon come Berlioz.") Woland and his minions transport one bureaucrat to Yalta, make another one disappear entirely except for his suit, and frighten several others so badly that they end up in a psychiatric hospital. In fact, it seems half of Moscow shows up in the bin, demanding to be placed in a locked cell for protection.

Meanwhile, a few doors down in the hospital lives the true object of Woland's visit: the author of an unpublished novel about Pontius Pilate. This Master--as he calls himself--has been driven mad by rejection, broken not only by editors' harsh criticism of his novel but, Bulgakov suggests, by political persecution as well. Yet Pilate's story becomes a kind of parallel narrative, appearing in different forms throughout Bulgakov's novel: as a manuscript read by the Master's indefatigable love, Margarita, as a scene dreamed by the poet--and fellow lunatic--Ivan Homeless, and even as a story told by Woland himself. Since we see this narrative from so many different points of view, who is truly its author? Given that the Master's novel and this one end the same way, are they in fact the same book? These are only a few of the many questions Bulgakov provokes, in a novel that reads like a set of infinitely nested Russian dolls: inside one narrative there is another, and then another, and yet another. His devil is not only entertaining, he is necessary: "What would your good be doing if there were no evil, and what would the earth look like if shadows disappeared from it?"

Unsurprisingly--in view of its frequent, scarcely disguised references to interrogation and terror--Bulgakov's masterwork was not published until 1967, almost three decades after his death. Yet one wonders if the world was really ready for this book in the late 1930s, if, indeed, we are ready for it now. Shocking, touching, and scathingly funny, it is a novel like no other. Woland may reattach heads or produce 10-ruble notes from the air, but Bulgakov proves the true magician here. The Master and Margarita is a different book each time it is opened. --Mary Park

Beautiful book with fun projects that kids love!.......2007-09-26

This is a fabulous book. My three-year-old daughter loves everything I've made out of this book. They are generally durable enough for light play - my daughter is pretty gentle. I enjoy doing these and it's really hours of fun for the kids to play with. Older kids would probably enjoy doing the projects too. They are relatively simple (with help from adults) and are pretty quick. I find finishing one of these dolls or figures extremely gratifying!

Great for 3rd grade and up.......2007-03-18

This one isn't a repeat of the first book in this series -- not at all! Instead it focuses more on creating small figures, toys and dolls, fairies and landscapes for a Seasonal Table. The projects are breathtaking, although very easy if you understand the basics of felting and winding wool. It also contains a short, but detailed section on dyeing wool using plants and other natural materials. Even if you don't dye your own wool, you'll appreciate the process. The hand-felted interactive play mats, complete with hidden spaces, are a completely new idea that children will enjoy using with their new felted animals and dolls. There are so many delightful ideas in this book, you and your children won't know where to start!

Advocates Stealing What Does Not Belong To You !.......2007-09-07

I am appalled at the content of this book - specifically when the author advocates trespassing on private property to steal plants. Not only is this illegal, it is sickening.

I'll admit that when I first picked up this book at the bookstore I was miffed. I had been researching the concept of Guerilla Gardening for an article I was writing for a national gardening magazine; only my definition of the movement was something quite different than this book. I always figured people who anonymously plant herbs, flowers and veggies in vacant lots, abandoned bus stops and crack alleys were urban Johnny Appleseeds hoping to leave something beautiful in an otherwise desolate and depressing area. But author Barbara Pallenberg redefines Guerilla Gardening as a method of obtaining otherwise pricey plants for free. Because I also happen to be a cheapskate, or as I usually like to call myself a frugal gardener, this book still appeals to me; that is once I got beyond the book's title! This is a fun read and I can't get over how useful the info is about how to propogate just about every plant you can thing of. Thanks to the tips and humorous advice in this book my plant plunder pal Sharon and I have managed to already nab a part of a prickly pear cactus that fell inches away from where I'll be taking horticulture classes!

This is a very strange book: It's primarily a field guide to "acquiring" plants through methods other than purchase (cuttings dividings, seeds, etc.), followed by home/garden accent tips for using the various odds and ends that you drag home. By odds & ends, I mean everything from cast-off cement to old shoes, and when I say "acquire," I do mean everything from "mooch" to, um, "Liberate."

The book has a great deal of quick & dirty suggestions for expanding your garden. Some of the information is both interesting and useful, but much of it consists of anectdotes of actions that I consider not very ethical. I can't say I've never done any of the things described, but I have to admit, seeing it laid out as a systematic strategy makes me somewhat uncomfortable. Granted, the author does recommend a degree of restraint while serreptitiously clipping your neighbor's prize-winning roses, and she does introduce the subject of endangered species & off-limits public land...

The specific materials on asexual propagation in this book are clear and explicit, and require very little in the way of expensive chemicals and gadgets. The instructions are a good bit less fussy than you will find in most garden books, which I consider a plus. It is taken as a given that some of your acquisitions will not make it, but, given that there's virtually no capital outlay, you'll still come out on top. Most of it is general, but there is a section in the middle treating specific varieties of plants. It's a fairly random sampling, and the rest of the book is an ecclectic mix of tips for using found items as decorative effects, and recipes for oddments you collect along the way. Bear in mind that if you're growing your garden from rooted twigs, some patience is required.

Bottom line: I liked the concept much more than the actual book. The "military theme" was disappointing. (Like Brittany Spears in camoflage suspenders: more "cute" than convincing.) If you can set aside any moral qualms, it's fairly humorous, and it does have some valuable pointers. Especially if you want a garden but don't want to go broke planting it out.

Not since Bill Withers' song, "Grandma's Hands" has there been such a touching tribute to a "bubbe", the Yiddish word for grandmother. Or, in this lucky case, to BOTH her 90-something grandmothers. How I envied her the privilege, courage and perspicacity to ask these questions before it was too late! I shared many, many things with my beloved grandmother, but I wish with all my heart that I had done what Joy Horowitz did in "Tessie and Pearlie", to search out and record the stories of her grandmothers' lives, what made them who they are, what their lives mean to her own life, to her children's lives. Joy Horowitz did, indeed, build an amazing, bittersweet bridge between her family's past and future and created a truly precious legacy for her own children and subsequent generations of her family. Especially when one is young, it is very often difficult to let go of the irritations and inconsistencies you see in your parents and grandparents and really communicate with them. It is usually in middle age that the sense of one's mortality overcomes these quibbles and by then, for most, it is too late for grandparents. If you are now fortunate enough to have a living grandmother, seize the moment. Read this book, put on Bill Withers and cry and - and then go call her up and ask and ask and listen and listen. Then write it down for posterity and marvel at the blessing.

Having known one of the grandmothers, it made the book much more real for me. Joy's portrayal of her grandmothers' lives is rich with the love and sorrow that each has endured. This book also tackles the issues of aging with a mature and realistic outlook. This has to be one of the most inspiring books I have read.

This is Joy Horowitz's tribute to her two jewish grandmothers. They are both in their 90's and as feisty and loving as can be. In a book full of wisdom, humor, and yes, recipes, there is a lingering sense of mortality as both bubbes tell their tales and wonder when death will claim them. This is a book for anyone who treasures the stories of years past, who loved to sit at their grandmother's knee as she told stories of years gone by. It will leave you at turns both happy and almost tearful as each grandmother grapples with the life she has lived and the fact that she won't be around much longer. Please read this book, it will help you as you look at the big picture of life and determine what is really important to you
