Book Description

From First to Last is complete life story of one of the most controversial yet least well known generals on either side during the Civil War. The number one graduate of the West Point class of 1843, William Buel Franklin served in the U.S. Army's Corps of Topographical Engineers and contributed greatly to the building of the nation's internal improvements, including a stint as chief engineer in charge of construction of the U.S. Capitol's dome and extension from 1859 to 1861. During the Civil War Franklin ascended rapidly in rank and command authority, from command of a Union brigade at Bull Run, to leadership of the Sixth Corps of the Army of the Potomac on the Peninsula and during the Maryland Campaign, to command of the Left Grand Division, of that army at the terrible Battle of Fredericksburg. In the wake of Fredericksburg, Franklin was unjustly blamed for the Union army's defeat, not so much because of his generalship-or lack thereof-but because of his politics and the highly-charged political nature of high-level leadership in the Army of the Potomac. Censured by the notorious Joint Congressional Committee on the Conduct of the War, Franklin was banished to the Department of the Gulf, where he participated in the ill-fated Sabine Pass Expedition and Red River Campaign. Wounded during the Red River Campaign and captured by Confederate partisan rangers Franklin would escape his captors but could not escape the wrath of the Lincoln administration, which refused to place him back in command even though his old West Point classmate-U. S. Grant-personally requested his services.Franklin resigned his commission in 1866 and began a highly successful post-war career as Vice President and General Manager of Colt's Firearms Company in Hartford, Connecticuit. A respected citizen of that city, Franklin continued to serve his country in a number of public positions, including leadership of a government bureau that eventually became the U.S. Veterans Administration. Snell's study of Franklin is evenly balanced, correctly pointing out Franklin's flaws and lapses of judgment-such as the Battle of Crampton's Gap on September 14, 1862-but giving him credit where he received none in the past. Snell provides readers with a complete picture of Franklin: brilliant engineer, doting husband, respected businessman, and controversial Union general. From First to Last will change the way historians interpret this important figure of American history.

5 out of 5 stars Maj. Gen. William B. Franklin.......2006-01-13

It appears William Buel Franklin, as a battle commander, had all the faults of George B. McClellan (very conservative, overly cautious, slow to action) and not a thread of his one finest quality (self-promotion). Mark Snell's excellent biography explores the man in all his controversy, but also making clear his positive qualities too, especially his role as a surveyor and engineer. Perhaps, as Snell points out, the qualities that Franklin fostered that made him an excellent engineer (studiousness, meticulousness) became liabilities when he was commanding troops on the field in the heat of battle.

Franklin was born in Pennsylvania in 1823. After graduating from West Point in 1843 (first in his class), he was with Kearny as a surveyor during the Mexican War. He was involved with a number of engineering projects around Washington, DC, including being in charge of construction of the Capitol dome. After the war broke out he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and saw action at First Bull Run and in the Peninsular Campaign. He was promoted to Major General in July 1862. At Fredericksburg in December of that year, Franklin led 50,000 men across the Rappahannock on the Union left, but made little headway against the fierce fighting; later Burnside charged Franklin with disobedience and blamed him (both unfairly) for the Union disaster that resulted there. The charge, later upheld by the Committee on the Conduct of the War, ruined his military reputation. Wounded at Sabine Cross Roads in April 1864, Franklin saw little action for the rest of the war. After the war he became vice-president and general manager of the Colt Firearms Company in Hartford and engineered the building of the Connecticut state capitol. He died in 1903.

It's probably fair to say that Franklin was a mediocre general. Snell believes that he was good at following orders, but not in acting independently when a situation called for it. The disaster at Fredericksburg seems to be an instance when Franklin followed orders TOO closely (Burnside's orders were not very clear to start with). Snell's account of Franklin's life is scholarly (it's based on his doctoral dissertation), but interesting and written with style. There are lots of photos included. Not much has been written about Franklin (I think this might be the only book-length study), and it's a worthy addition to anyone's Civil War library.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent biography........2004-09-15

Before I read this book, the name William Buell Franklin meant little. All I knew was that he was a Union commander at Fredericksburg. The rest of Franklin's war service was a mystery to me. Thank God I read this book.

Franklin's reputation before this book can be compared to other Union generals such as George McClellan. Unfairly criticized for the Union losses in the eastern theater, McClellan has been the focal blame for the Union's lack of success in the early part of the war. In comparison, Franklin's inability to break through Jackson's lines at Fredericksburg has scarred his name until recently. Taking unjustifiable blame for this defeat, the Pennsylvanian never regained full respect for his illustrious war service.

What's even more impressive about this book is its commitment to the truth. Snell's study illustrates Franklin's strengths and failures throughout the war. Surely, the Maryland Campaign was not Franklin's finest hour as a commander, but Snell refuses to put entire blame on the general for his inability to rescue Harpers Ferry, unlike other historians of the campaign.

One can admire the entire life of this Union general. His service to his home and country has finely been noticed. Though still seen as the "scapegoat" of Fredericksburg, Franklin now has a fair biography that will certainly be the best out there for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating cast of Civil War personalities!.......2002-07-20

Franklin's life reads like an action-adventure story! Using previously undiscovered letters and meticulous research of the period, Mark Snell has brought to light a man whose life parallels the development of the United States through the 19th century. As an infant, William B. Franklin had been kissed by Lafayette and given, as were the fledgling United States, the blessing of that great proponent of American independence. Graduating first in his class at West Point, Franklin pursued an Army career in the Corps of Topographical Engineers, deeply involved in building the infrastructure which would support and define America's burgeoning industrial economy . . . mapping western territories and surveying Great Lake shorelines, building innovative coastal lighthouses, and serving as project manager for the DC capitol dome. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Franklin advised the Lincoln administration on how to expand the Regular Army, just the beggining of his interaction with many of the "big dogs" in that political and military struggle. He rose in rank and was a principal player in some of the war's most renown campaigns: First Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, the Red River Campaign. He was even captured by Confederates and made a daring escape!

Of most interest to Civil War aficionados, Snell disputes Franklin's alleged "failure" at Fredericksburg and presents a solid argument for his true failure during the Maryland Campaign. Had Franklin been more aggressive following his success at Crampton's Gap on September 14, 1862, McClellan might have trounced Lee thoroughly at Sharpsburg, surely shortening the war. New information on Franklin's participation in the Red River Campaign is also fascinating. Following the war, Franklin ventured into a life of public service and business -- such as overseeing The National Home for Disabled Veterans and managing the Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company -- and finally bowed out gracefully with the beginning of the new century.

This is a fair and objective biography of a truly selfless patriot, whose life teaches us about the century during which America defined itself as a nation, a man whose vigor, enthusiasm, and accomplishment matched that of the dynamic era during which he lived.

      Book Description

The groundbreaking program for healthy aging through movement and flexibility.

In the revolutionary Somatics, Thomas Hanna demonstrates that so many problems we accept as inevitable over time--chronic stiffness, bad back, chronic pain, fatigue, and even high blood pressure--need never occur if we maintain conscious control of nerve and muscle, a state which Hanna calls sensory-motor awareness. This gentle, lifelong program can help almost anyone maintain the pleasures of a supple, healthy body indefinitely, with only a five-minute routine once a day.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy and surprisingly effective.......2007-08-11

I'd tried everything common for my back, without much success, and ended up on the Somatics website by pure coincidence. Amazingly, after a couple days of self-administered Somatics, I was able to quit the painkillers I was on and resumed something like my previous level of activity. Notably, this book is merely the core text, and I've since purchased a couple other books of their website, but nevertheless the exercises in here are quite effective for decreasing pain from stuck muscles and increasing range of motion. A good way to check whether it will be efficacious for you is to actually feel the muscles that hurt. If they're stiff and flexed, PT, stretching, etc. will probably not help, but Somatics probably will.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction, probably better to use if one has taken classes or had sessions first.......2007-07-08

I love Somatics. Just a few private sessions have improved my posture, greatly increased my flexibility without regular stretching and greatly lessened pain in my right hip. I'm not so sure, though, that the average person who hasn't been introduced to Somatics through a few classes or private sessions will so easily be able to get it which is why I only gave the book 4 stars. Some of the Somatics movements in the book take quite a bit of body awareness to figure out and do.

Having expressed my concern about how easy it would be for ordinary folks to "get it" I want to also say that Thomas Hanna was a brilliant man, there are profound concepts in this book, and for anyone who's ever done Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement work this book is a priceless extension to Feldenkrais' work. My Somatics teacher who has also taught the Feldenkrais method says results come much much quicker in Somatics.

For someone wanting to explore Somatics I'd recommend this book and also whichever of the audio tapes/CDs from Hanna's organization in Sonoma, California interest you. The tapes are helpful because they walk you through movements, much like a guided meditation.

5 out of 5 stars It Really Works!.......2007-05-07

I have been practicing the exercises in outlined in the book for about two months now. My back is much better and I have gained flexibility in bending by three or more inches. Both legs are the same length again!

The book is clear and concise, and the exercises are clearly demonstrated and easy to follow. Best of all, once you have practiced the long exercises, you consolidate them into a seven minute daily routine you can do either in the morning or before bed. You can see results in a few days, so it's pretty easy to keep on working.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing information!!.......2007-04-02

I have been a medical massage therapist since 1995. When I read this book, I knew I had to learn more. This information provides clients with a way to help maintain the results they get from their treatments. I was so impressed by it that I got certified to teach it. Now, I teach a class once a month to enhance my work. I bought the book for twenty of my clients and they are all on the program. I have been personally able to eliminate most of the pain in my upper back by doing these simple movement patterns five minutes a day. This is time and money well spent.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-31

Somatics is giving me a way to control my muscle spasms in my shoulders and back.

        Book Description

Cooking Without Milk is a straightforward, commonsense cookbook for the 50 million people in America who have milk or lactose intolerances or allergies. Unlike most of the current milk-free cookbooks that are free of lactose but not necessarily of milk, Cooking Without Milk is completely milk-free, with more than 550 recipes and variations of the foods people eat regularly with ingredients found in most grocery stores today. Many current milk-free cookbooks assume that lactose is the only problem ingredient in milk, require ingredients that are hard to find, and presume that cooks are mainly interested in making gourmet, time-consuming dishes. Cooking Without Milk, however, assumes that most people who cook milk-free don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Cooking is not their only pastime. Cooking Without Milk includes a wide range of recipes— main dishes, vegetables, soups, sandwiches, egg dishes, breads, deserts, beverages, and sauces, gravies, and glazes. Also included are guides to the role of milk and milk products in diet, high-lactose foods to avoid, a guide to calcium and calcium-rich foods, and other useful information for those who cannot consume milk. The author also suggests ways in which to determine one's level of milk intolerance, how to live comfortably while avoiding milk, eating in restaurants, accepting invitations that involve meals, milk products in medications, knowing how to find hidden milk in the ingredients of everyday foods, what to be careful about when buying from an in-store deli, and a list of Web sites for those who want to research milk intolerance for themselves.

2 out of 5 stars I was hoping for more..........2006-03-10

Best page of the book is 254, the list of milk and dairy byproduct names to help you decipher the product labels.

Almost 100 pages are devoted to breads and desserts. So I guess if you can't have dairy, you can still get fat. Quite a few of the recipes have the "duh" factor...salads and things you hardly need a recipe for. Substituting mocha mix for regular milk in normal recipes..."duh".

What I would love to find, is a book that tells me how to make non-dairy versions of ubiquitous ingredients. Like a non-dairy substitute for a can of cream of mushroom soup.

1 out of 5 stars NEGATIVE STAR - they cut down trees for this????.......2006-01-16

I felt so talked down to and I am far from a proffessional chef. Just cook for the kids and a regular working mom. So do yourself a favor:
1 Check out the glossary section alone -either in a book store or at the library BEFORE you buy.
If you can't do that here are just a few of my personal favorites that this author took the time to DEFINE in the glossary: OIL, FLOUR, OATS, BANANAS, WAX PAPER, MAYONNAISE- (no kidding)
2 Look up the book "The Milk-Free Kitchen : Living Well Without Dairy Products" AND BUY THAT INSTEAD!!

Don't make the mistake I did and buy Cooking without Milk sight unseen. Well, on second thought if you don't know what a can opener is our how to use one this may be the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money. The author is LAZY!!.......2005-08-22

This book does not contain dairy free recipes. The female author simply uses regular recipes and when milk or butter is required, she simply writes "use non dairy milk substitute" or "use non dairy butter substitute". Well duh! I could have figured that out. She does not recommend any particular brands, she simply writes "read the label". Again, duh! I could have figured that out. So save your money find a good milk and butter non dairy substitute and READ THE LABELS. The recipes are bland and the author does not give a complete list of ingriedients to look out for/avoid when you are "reading the labels". This book was poorly written and is uninformative.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my life!!.......2005-05-18

This is the BEST milk-free cookbook I have found anywhere!! At 5 weeks old my son was diagnosed with milk and soy allergies. We both went on a milk-free and soy-free diet. I tried many cookbooks but this one was the only one that included "normal" recipes I could use daily. The recipes are practical and delicious. Recipes for cream soups, gravies, biscuits, and other "taboo" items are given and they taste like "real" food. The author also includes advice, substitution ideas, website addresses, and lots of encouragement. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs to eliminate milk from their diets - I still use the book daily!

        5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2002-12-17

I do not cook milk free at my home, but have relatives that cannot tolerate milk (of any kind) in their diet. This book has common sense information and ideas that are extremely helpful for creating meals without milk (even a Thanksgiving dinner). The format of the book is easy to use and sprinkled with ideas and tips. A good basic cookbook for anyone as the recipes can be adapted for use with milk also.

              Book Description

Willie Mays said that good players can play with their bodies, but great players play with their hearts and minds as well. The same is true for fathering. In Covering Home, author Jack Petrash combines a love for children with his love for the game of baseball to give fathers, or fathers-to-be, a new perspective on raising children.

The Baltimore Orioles had a unique outfielder once named Ken Singleton, and he had an unusual habit: whenever he stepped up to bat, he would reach down and pick up three pebbles. These pebbles were a reminder that each time he batted he was entitled to three good pitches. This act heightened his awareness, and increased his patience and discipline as a hitter.

I think fathers need a similar ritual. We should stop before our front door when we are about to make the transition to our children's world and imagine that we are about to pick up three stones. At this moment we should remind ourselves that we are going to spend these three hours with the most important people in the world.

              Quotes on the hardcover edition:

"Will immediately become the kind of book passed on from friend to friend, from father to father, and from father to son or daughter. . . . There are many more detailed books on fatherhood that are essential for a dad's -library, but none so precious as this small wonder."-Publishers Weekly

"Petrash delivers more than just tips about patience and preparation, timing and tolerance. Like a veteran manager, he hands out inspiration and discipline in equal measures, and shows us how we can be more than we ever imagined."-Utne Reader

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but very simplistic.......2003-09-15

I actually enjoyed reading the book, but I should say that in my opinion, the views were very simplistic. It is a relatively short book with many messages, which the author often illustrates by example. I personally thought some deserved a more in depth discussion. However, one could argue that was the point - to stay in line with his baseball metaphors. In any case, I don't know if I would recommend this book, but it's not a bad read. I've certainly read worse parenting books...

5 out of 5 stars The best fathering book I've ever read.......2003-06-03

I can't emphasize how helpful this book has been to me, as well as to our family. It has helped me become a better father, husband, and person. I've recommended this book to many people. I highly recommend this book for any father who wants to take his parenting to a new level.

4 out of 5 stars Good read although metaphor gets stretched at times.......2003-04-11

Jack Petrash has taken a medium that almost all American men understand and used it to illustrate good parenting skills. Using baseball and various aspects of that game, he illustrates the similarities between the various stages of the game and the various stages of child rearing, how to make the highlights reel and avoid the bloopers reel, strategies if you have a shallow bench (single parenting), and many more. "Covering Home" is an entertaining and yet practical read that clearly illustrates the key points of good parenting through the medium of baseball. It is a recommended read that is sure to delight and entertain the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons that last all season.......2003-03-21

Jack Petrash hit a home run with this book. I run a national fathering nonprofit, and this is one of my 3 favorite books on fathering -- real, simple, clear, short and to the most essential of points about being a good dad. That is, be intentional. Pay attention to what you do and say, and open yourself up to the passion of the best job a man can ever have -- father.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book !.......2001-02-19

I really liked the lessons you can learn from this book. It gives a great overview what to expect and what to do with your children as a caring parent. Having three sons myself i often had the same experiences as described in this book. I really can recommend it, also, coming from Munich in Germany, i do not have an idea, what baseball is about. Now i know even a little of this topic.

                    Book Description

One of the most prolific and creative of the German Expressionists, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) is noted for his mastery of the human form and the startling contrasts of pure color in his paintings. This gorgeous book--the first publication in English in 30 years on this leader of the Die Brucke movement--presents almost 150 of Kirchner's finest paintings, watercolors, prints, and sculptures, together with essays by leading scholars.

Of all the artists in the early modern period, Kirchner was most responsive to the underlying tension between nature and civilization that fascinated his generation. This preoccupation culminates in his paintings of metropolitan Berlin, where he combines elegance with fierce rawness to reveal the potential wildness of the crowd. His masterpieces from the years 1905 to 1915, his most important and innovative period, are the focus of this book and the exhibition it accompanies, opening at the National Gallery of Art in Washington in March 2003.

The catalogue for a 2003 exhibition at the Royal academy of Art in London, this book is one of the best studies on this leading German expressionist painter. The text is divided in several essays by important critics (Norman Rosenthal, J.Lloyd...) and deal with aspects such as Kirchner as an expressionist, Kirchner as a German artist, Kirchner's sculptures (rarely seen before and revelations of the artist's multi-faceted skills). All the masterpieces are reproduced in high-quality fashion. Required reading for anybody interested in the Expressionists.

Expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Self-Portrait as Soldier (1915) is one of the best-known self-portraits of the modern classical period. With its sharp foreground focus on the uniformed artist's bloody amputated hand, the painting has long been interpreted as a vehement protest against war, specifically World War I and Kirchner's participation in it. Peter Springer's innovative study presents a convincing alternative reading of Kirchner's epochal work. Springer sees in it, not a harsh condemnation of militarism, but a marked ambivalence in the artist's attitude toward war. This new reading of the painting grows out of Springer's assessment of its imagery in relation to patronage, gender relations, and national identity--and particularly to propaganda and satire.
Using Kirchner's letters and other documentation, much of it only recently available, Springer reconstructs the years of Kirchner's military service. He juxtaposes a range of visual contexts that include traditions of self-portraiture, depictions of prosthetic devices, and propaganda accounts of German soldiers hacking off the hands of Belgian and French children. He then considers Kirchner in relation to Albrecht Dürer and to theoretical arguments on the relative dominance of hand and mind in the pictorial arts that invoke the image of "Raphael without hands." Nearly 100 illustrations superbly complement the text.

Award-winning author Alison Gold presents the little-know story of Chiune Sugihara (1900-1986), a Japanese diplomat who risked everything to save the lives of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. Sugihara chose to issure visas to Jews escaping Lithuania, despite the fact that his superiors strictly forbade him to do so. For the first time ever, his unforgettable story, as well as the stories of those he saved, are made accessible to adolescent readers.

4 out of 5 stars An engaging and informative book.......2006-06-12

A Special Fate is the story of Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese consulate to Lithuania who, against the wishes of his superiors, hand wrote about six thousand transit visas to Jews fleeing the invading Nazi forces. His bravery saved many lives, but cost him not only his political career but also his youngest son's life. The author also weaves the story of two Jewish children who received visas from Sugihara into the main narrative.

The book is very engaging, not at all like the dry lists of dates that typically pass for history. I usually don't find history books enjoyable, but I enjoyed this one and learned a lot, not only about how Sugihara's visas saved so many people, but also a bit about Japanese culture.

The story moves quickly enough to keep younger readers from getting bored, but not so fast that the details are lost. Most older children will be able to read the book and understand what is going on as long as they have a basic knowledge of W.W.II history.

I would recommend this book to anyone learning about W.W.II, and even though it is supposedly a children's book, I would recommend it to adults too.

5 out of 5 stars Chiune Sugihara--Righteous Among the Nations.......2004-05-14

Chiune Sugihara's story needed to be told. In a dark period of Japanese history, one man listened to his conscience, discussed the consequences with his wife and children, and chose to do the right thing. In the early days of WWII, Sugihara, a diplomat to Lithuania, issued thousands of life-saving visas to the Jews of Europe against the direct orders of his superiors. After the Russians took over Lithuania, Sugihara was forced to close the Japanese Embassy, but he continued writing visas until the last possible moment.

The rest of Sugihara's story is anti-climactic, dealing with his diplomatic career throughout the war. After the war, the Soviets sent the Sugihara family to a Siberian detention camp. When they were finally repatriated, Sugihara was immediately dismissed from government service for disobeying orders. He spent many years in obscurity before finally being found by some of the grateful Jews that he had saved. Near the end of his life, he received some well-deserved acknowledgement by both the Japanese and Israeli government including being recognized as "Righteous Among the Nations."

Alison Leslie Gold, who has written several other non-fiction books of the Jewish experience during the Holocaust, tells the story of three families. Besides Sugihara's story, Gold describes the experience of a Jewish family from Poland and another from Lithuania who received Sugihara visas. Gold focuses on Solly and Masha, children from those families. She interviewed them as well as Sugihara's widow, Yukiko, for first hand accounts of the heroic and tragic events described in this book. Masha's family used their visa to travel to Japan and survived the war. Tragically, Solly's family repeatedly delayed using their visa until it was too late to use it resulting in many family members' deaths at the hands of the Nazis. Solly found it quite ironic that a Japanese man tried to offer his family assistance at the beginning of the war and the first American face that he saw when he was liberated at the end of the war was a Japanese American soldier.

The photographs in the book help readers understand that this is a true story that happened to real people. There are photographs of all three families and additional photos from the time period. The photos are separated from the narrative in two clumps. Though this distracts from their impact, they are still powerful.

This is an easy to read introductory book on the incidents in Lithuania. However, I found information on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum web site that was not included in the book. In the web site's section on Sugihara, I learned about the interesting larger story involving the Dutch council, Jan Zwartendijk and his involvement in helping the Lithuanian Jews. I also learned that Yukiko was Sugihara's second wife.

Gold is non-judgmental towards Japan's involvement in WWII and of Sugihara's father's involvement in occupied Korea. However, she seems to lose some of that impartiality when she adds comments on Sugihara's conversion to Russian Orthadoxism. She adds the comment that he did not forget his Buddhism and Shinto religions from his youth (10). I wonder how she knows that detail of his conversion.

The research that went into A Special Fate could have been better documented. Gold's sources are summed up in an author's note at the beginning of the book and an author's acknowledgement at the end. The book does not include a bibliography for further reading or works consulted.

It is estimated that Sugihara wrote 6,000 visas. Now there is a group numbering over 40,000 descendants known as "Sugihara Survivors." Even in later life, Sugihara remained a humble man and once said, "I didn't do anything special....I made my own decisions....I followed my own conscience and listened to it" (175). Yukiko also should be commended, because had she dissuaded her husband, he might not have written the visas that saved so many lives. Karen Woodworth-Roman, MS Library Science

5 out of 5 stars A great and exciting story!.......2003-06-09

Chiune "Sempo" Sugihara is one of the little known heroes of the Holocaust. This is rather unfortunate, as Mr. Sugihara was probably responsible for the saving of more Jews than any other individual! While serving as Japanese Vice Consul in Lithuania in 1940, Mr. Sugihara, against the express orders of his government, issued some 6,000 visas to people (individuals and families) desperately seeking to avoid the Nazi death machine. This book is the story of Chiune Sugihara, from youth to honored old age, and also the story of two young Jews, one whose parent took the visa and ran, and one whose parent waited too long.

This is a great and exciting story! I got this book for my twelve-year-old daughter, but found that I liked it just as much as she did. I really enjoyed this story of one man standing up and doing what was right, in spite of the costs. If you are looking for an uplifting story, one that teaches an invaluable lesson, then I highly recommend that you get this book!

5 out of 5 stars This book should be required reading for all of humankind!.......2000-05-18

Alison Gold has documented with elegance the selfless humanity of Sempo Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat of the World War II era. Against the orders of his superiors, Mr. Sugihara wrote 6,000 visas in an effort to spare the lives of Polish and Lithuanian Jews. Through Alison Gold's brilliantly crafted accounts, we learn of the horrors and atrocities of the Holocaust, of the mixed fates of several families who were granted visas, and of the injustices to which the Sugihara family was subjected as a result of Sempo's courageous response to human torment. In several places throughout this magnificent book, Ms. Gold introduces Japanese phrases that do much to enrich our understanding of cultural concepts at the core of the Sugihara's way of thinking and living. We learn of the considerable influence that Mrs. Sugihara had on her husband's decisions. While this book was written for a young adult audience, most adults would find its content engrossing.

This is a beautiful book. I had to check the total number of pages after the first 10 pages, because I knew I would want to read the whole book in one sitting. "Hands reaching... for visas for life." Some people had never seen a Japanese person before. We hear the ice on rivers breaking up with loud cracking, we taste the Lithuanian pancakes with cheese filling and jam, we experience the shock of watching an American movie to then walk out into the light and see Russian tanks rolling down the street. The writer carries us gently through a lot of history, pain and beauty. I thought this would be a depressing book about the Holocaust, I was very wrong.

When Chiune Sugihara was growing up in Japan, he had never even met a Jewish person. There was no way Chiune could know that he would one day save the lives of thousands of Jews - and become a great hero to the Jewish people. Chiune Sugihara was a diplomat who left Japan to work in Lithuania, a small country in Eastern Europe. Part of his job there was to give people permission to leave the country. At the time, Lithuanian Jews were suffering under Nazi rule, and many hoped to escape before they could be taken to concentration camps. Chiune knew he had to help. Going against the wishes of his boss, Chiune allowed nearly 6,000 Jews to leave Lithuania and escape the Nazis.
