Book Description
Although rockets and rocket-like gadgets have been known for about 2000 years, the development of high-performance, high-precision rockets began only about sixty years ago when Wernher von Braun started an energetic and systematic program to build rockets for space flight. In 1958, von Braun's team launched the Saturn V rocket that was to launch 12 American astronauts on their way to the moon. This book is based on very close personal and work relationships between von Braun and the authors (25 years for Frederick Ordway, 34 years for Ernst Stuhlinger). More than one hundred carefully recorded and edited interviews, and several hundred verbal and written comments on von Braun by people who knew him well, were used for the book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent account of Von Braun.......2006-08-13
This is the kind of biographies that are a delight to read. As the writer said in the beginning, their focus was on writing a book about the person Von Braun, who he was. Other editions dwell on rocket science in more detail, and even more have picture collections of the many years that spanned Von Braun's work, from Peenemunde until the man on the moon.
Both authors have been privileged to know Von Braun and have been working with him for many years. Probably this is the reason why this will remain the definitive biography, since Von Braun passed away in 1977 and so will his generation sooner or later.
Not always is the story chronological, since the authors choose a more loose approach, as to make the story and the person come out better. They succeeded. This book is full of interesting details, not only about the works of Von Braun, but also about the history and times in the war until the space age and finally, a sensitive account on his last years that could only have come from writers who were close to him. Of course it is also crammed with interesting quotes from all involved. All in all, it is a well-succeeded attempt to create an interesting and trustworthy (and not too long) account of who the man was.
This book has many parallels to the Heisenberg's Uncertainty story, both men well ahead of their time, probably doing the right thing to continue their work anyway, since otherwise their refusal would have meant no stopping of the war machine, although others of us might think a Ghandi-style refusal of developing anything for a country under dictatorship would have been a better option. The authors keep it as neutrally as possible so it is for the reader, after absorbing the facts, to think what he wants of it all. No doubt, as the reader progresses in the book and becomes aware of how the sky has been the limit in the 20th century almost only because of this man, it will become clear that the world has been a more interesting place with Von Braun in it. Highly recommended!
A collection of dates.......2006-05-14
Very poor account of the life of a genius. Lots of details but very disappointing from the point of view of the development of the ideas and the technology. You will end this book knowing in detail what happened during the transfer of the penemunde team to america but not knowing that rockets don't have propellers.
A great book about a Great Engineer.......2001-03-11
This wonderful book, that takes in account the says of a lot of people that really lived and worked with Dr. von Braun shows what a great person he was. His contribution to the space effort is clearly shown here. The companion book (the illustrated Memoir) shows a lot of pictures of his life. If somebody want to know how the space was won, MUST read this book.
A book from Dr. Von Braun's fellow rocket scientist.......1998-07-28
This book by Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger & Fredrick Ordway provides the reader with a good insight into Dr. Wehner Von Braun and the space program. My father had the pleasure of working closely with Dr. Von Braun in promoting Madison County Alabama where much of the actual development and testing of the rocket engines occurred. He always said the Dr. Von Braun was a man who got things done and was one of the best salesmen for Madison County and N.A.S.A. that has ever lived. A excellent book on Dr. Von Braun and his team of german rocket scientists.

Awesome book.......2007-03-16
This is an awesome book for adults and children with ADHD. It explains so much and a way that is easily understood. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a child diagnosed ADHD.
Jumpin' Johnny Get Back to Work!: A Child's Guide to ADHD/Hyperactivity.......2007-01-09
This is a good book which speaks to a child in helping them understand that they are not the only ones with these issues. A lot of times, books speak "louder" than parents. :)
Well done.......2002-04-04
This book is actually funny. It hits on the aspects of ADHD perfectly, right down to the angelic little sister who can do no wrong. There are some words in the book I wish were not there, like stupid and crazy. I bought it to read to my 5 year old who is ADHD, but with no learning disablities...yet. So I figure we will skip the part on learning disablilities, and being given less homework from the rest of the class. Use it for a tool to help explain what we are doing as a family to address the ADHD, and help him control his behavior. Read it first, cut out what you don't think applies or needs to be heard by your child. The book is mostly informative, and really funny.
A great, down-to-earth kid's view of ADHD!.......2000-08-04
I bought this book for my 6-year-old nephew and will read it to him when he comes to live with us soon. I can't wait, because it is so simply written and straightforward, I'm sure it will help him understand what we have not been able to tell him about his ADHD condition. It is entertaining, and because it is told in a kid's point of view, it shows ADHD with concerns that kids would have that adults might not have even thought of. I recommend it if you're trying to find just the right way of reaching your child or student!

Dr. Michael Gordon has indeed captured the heartfelt pain, hopes and challenges of an ADHD child and his family. The simple suggestions in the video are not only invaluable for immediate family action, but also give teachers ideas on working with these creative ADHD children. A must for ALL to see. I've introduced this book/video to hundreds of parents and teachers.

Not just for bread.......2007-05-29
This book is about using your bread machine to make a variety of breads and pastries. Some recipes use the machine from beginning to end, many use the machine for only part of the process. This is actually an advantage as it takes you beyond the basics. The variety of recipes and techniques shown more than justify the expense of a bread machine, or the hassle of storing it, which might seem excessive if bread alone was your only use. I highly recommend the book. Good recipes, beautiful photos, and a delight to use.
Very, very easy to follow recipes with excellent results........2006-10-13
I have had several bread machine baking books. My general feeling about them , despite having a degree in Chemistry and Engineering is that they were way too hard to follow. Not this book. Add the ingredients in the order specified, start the machine and eat the most delicious bread. I especially recommend the Anadama bread (polenta & wheat), the Maple Oatmeal and the Buckwheat Walnut. I get rave reviews from friends and generally am not able to get through a loaf at work without colleagues stealing a good half of it or more. Best choice for a first book.
Also has good descriptions of the grains involved and a fun dessert and a section on savory breads, pizzas, etc.. I like to make the Sage Rosemary bread with two Trader Joe's uncured hotdogs in it. Instant lunch.
A little outdated, but lots of timeless info.......2006-01-06
I bought a copy of this book a few years ago on the cheap table at the local bookstore. I never used it until recently when I finally replaced my old machine (which was missing the dough paddle when I bought this book and I didn't know it, but I digress...).
The only outdated thing about this book is they refer to loaf sizes as small, medium, and large, rather than 1 lb, 1.5 lb, and 2 lb. (In fact, I'm not positive that the three descriptions directly relate.) The beginning includes some timeless info for a beginner about making bread and using bread machines. It explains the difference between types of flours (even rare ones), types of bread, adding extra ingredients (like fruit, cheese, nuts, even meat!). There are pictures of what dough looks like too wet or too dry in the machine and how to fix.
The recipes are very diverse, including breads from around the world. My only complaint is that the majority of the recipes have you remove the dough after mixing and shape the bread to bake in the oven. I would have liked more recipes that I can just walk away from, or at least an option on the current recipes to make slight changes in order to leave it to bake in the machine.

Many great receipes and a beautiful cookbook.......2000-08-20
I have owned many baking books including Baking with Julia. I have long admired the author Carole Clements, and I own one of her French cookbook. I have very good experience with her receipe. My friends like all the dishes I made from Ms. Clement's cookbook. This is a small dimension book but full of many wonderful receipes including breads, muffins, tarts..... If you look for a receipe book, this is a good one. The photos are just tempting for you to give it a try. But if you don't know that much about baking, it is still good to own this book because it contains 3-5 photos of important steps each receipe. The only sorry I have for this book is that it repeats some receipes of my former cookbooks. I think I just have too many baking (dessert) cookbooks.

Great Cats is a beautifully illustrated travelogue of one man's unusual adventure. In 1993, soldier-turned-award-winning-artist Simon Combes set out to observe and paint the nine great cats of the world in their natural habitats. Combes circled the globe to accomplish this feat, braving blizzards and blowguns. He breaks his account down into three three-cat sections: Cats of the Jungle (Thailand's Clouded Leopard, Venezuela's Jaguar, and India's Bengal Tiger), Cats of the Snow (Siberia's Siberian Tiger, Mongolia's Snow Leopard, North America's Cougar), and Cats of the Plains (Kenya's Cheetah and Tanzania's Leopard and Lion).
Combes's skillful sketches and photographic paintings are matched only by his fresh and engaging commentary. As a gifted artist, Combes is very perceptive, and he employs this talent both on and off the canvas, making wry and sometimes hysterical observations of the human subjects he encounters. The cats, however, are given only reverent scrutiny, and anyone who is drawn to the power and beauty of these regal creatures will find Combes a kindred spirit and capable guide. One of the most thoughtful additions to the book is an information box for each cat, detailing its behavior, habitat, population status, and principal threats. Combes gravely notes that the most serious threat to each of the cats is human encroachment on its dwindling habitat. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Adventurer and artist Simon Combes had a life-long desire to paint the nine great cats of the world in their natural habitat. This commitment to accuracy sets him apart from his very able competition in the world of wildlife painters. Not content to study only zoo specimens and skeletons, Simon Combes studied the animals in their own worlds, full of battles, starvation and the competition in nature where truly only the fit survive. Already famous for his African wildlife paintings, Combes set out on what became a three year, three continent journey through the plains, jungles and snow to find the jaguar, cougar, lion, cheetah, snow leopard, Siberian tiger, clouded leopard, Bengal tiger and African leopard.

Great Cats.......2000-04-24
A must for anybody who loves great cats and art: a book full of stories and especially awesome photos, sketches and paintings of these wonderful creatures. The paintings are so incredibly realistic that at times one has to look closely to make sure it is not just a photo. A definite winner !
A super book an art by a talented artist Simon Combes.......1999-11-26
They say never judge a book by its cover, well friends you can in this case.A beautiful oil painting of a jaguar on its cover says it all, this is a must have book for any animal lovers specially wild cats, art students and even professional artists. Book is loaded incredible stories and killer artworks of Simon Combes.I enjoyed it every single page and I did not realize that I end up reading the entire book in one sitting.I was so captivated by the stories, and I enjoyed the art work of Simon Combes, well worth the money.
Book Description
Everyone is familiar with the big cats--the lion, tiger, leopard, and jaguar--members of the genus Panthera. The smaller cats--members of the genus Felis--are less familiar. This absorbing book, considered "a comprehensive survey" by David Quammen, writing in the New York Times Book Review, presents what is known about the thirty-seven or so species of the world's cats, including abundant information on the much-neglected smaller members of the cat family.
"Dr. Kitchener . . . has made a readable, up-to-date synthesis of what we know about cats, his account always strengthened by the comparative point of view."--Scientific American "The numerous tables and comprehensive bibliography will appeal to the scientist, while the breadth of topics discussed, summary of numerous studies published in hard-to-find journals, numerous graphs and line drawings, and emphasis on the smaller cats and their behaviour, will make it of wider interest."--John Deag, Times Higher Education Supplement

Book Description
This handsome volume combines breathtaking full-color photographs with an authoritative, engaging narrative to celebrate the wild cats of North America and examine their natural history and prospects for survival.
Wildlife expert and best-selling author Candace Savage presents intimate portraits of three wild felines - the lynx, bobcat, and mountain lion - that live throughout the temperate-zone latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. In 90 stunning color photographs by many of the world's finest outdoor photographers and in her always lively prose, she crafts an informative and entertaining treatment of these exotic predators: their physical characteristics, diet, and hunting techniques; their relationship with humans; and their present and future survival status in the face of encroachment by civilization.
Compassionate and uncompromising, Wild Cats is a stirring tribute as well as a sober reminder that our continuing abuse of natural systems risks the decline or extinction of the world's wild creatures.

Lovely Images, Not Much Info.......1999-12-08
This book has some of the loveliest photographs that I have seen. Most of the images are full page size, with several two-page spreads. This is the perfect book for anyone wanting pictures of bobcats, lynx, or pumas, however, there is not a great deal of information provided. I would personaly refer anyone looking for a wealth of information on these cats to ~Forest Cats of North America: Cougar, Bobcat, Lynx~ by Jerry Kobalenko. Nonetheless, Savage's images ~are~ superior to Kobalenko's, so the buyer should take into consideration what they are looking for. I, for one, am glad to have both.

These simple, tabletop plans feature O gauge sectional track and are perfect for small or medium-sized first layouts. Each plan includes construction details and a complete list of the components required to build the layout.
Customer Reviews:
Limited Material Lists, good background info.......2006-01-18
Basic background information about trackwork and benchwork contained within the first few chapters of this book are excellent information for the novice model railroader. (Note: The L-girder benchwork diagram is mis-labeled, pieces #7 form the X brace between the legs, while pieces #3 & 5 form the triangle between the legs and the "L" girder support. Dimensions for these pieces are correct)
Layouts at all interesting, however, slightly less than half of the layouts in this book come with track/accessory material lists. If you're using this a inspiration for your own layout, that should be no problem. If you want to actually build the layout and there's no list, you may be able to guess what you need. There is also a good variety of layout sizes, from small to room size.

Dr. Mitchell Gaynor is the director of medical oncology at the renowned Strang Cancer Prevention Center in New York City. His mother died of breast cancer when he was 9, and he's made it his mission to spare other people the pain his family endured. Gaynor is concerned with the ubiquitousness of pesticides, herbicides, and other environmental toxins linked to cancer (the U.S. has made the use of DDT illegal, but regularly exports it to Third World countries for use on crops that are harvested and imported back to the States). He says, "even those of us who don't smoke, eat a high-fat diet, and don't work in a chemical plant are still living, at work and at play, on a profoundly soiled an carcinogenic planet."
The best defense against this, says Gaynor, is a diet high in phytonutrients and antioxidants, from the carotenoids in carrots and cantaloupe, to resveratrol found in red grapes, to zeaxanthin in tomatoes. After explaining--in non-intimidating terms--how the immune system functions and how the liver detoxifies the body, Gaynor gives a lowdown on the most powerful, proven nutrients for boosting immunity--and therefore preventing cancer. He's distilled the cancer-fighting research on fiber, vitamins, minerals, green tea, garlic, wheat grass, algae, omega-3 oils, and other nutrients and lists solid sources for each, along with recommended brands (including phone numbers and Web-site addresses) of supplements.
While going organic and consuming sufficient phytonutrients are integral parts of Gaynor's plan, he says that stress reduction can't be underestimated, either. "People who are under severe psychological pressure have measurably impaired immune systems," he says, and as a remedy, he advises yoga and meditation. He also covers cancer screenings and dietary and lifestyle tips for specifically preventing colon, lung, breast, and prostate cancers. Highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
A must have to help prevent cancer.......2000-04-19
This is by far one of the best books on cancer prevention I have ever read. It is easy to understand, informative and an absolute wealth of information on the subject.
Not only do Drs. Gaynor and Hickey explain what foods are good for you and why -- they also break down how you can get each of the nutrients and antioxidants in supplement form on pages that immediately follow entitled "Pharmacist Corner."
After being diagnosed with malignant melanoma I immediately started to hunt around for resource books on how to lessen my chances of reoccurances and so far this is the best. It is an uplifting resource book filled with information on the subject as well as success stories that will be an inspiration to all who read it.
Bold breathrough book.......1999-02-26
Dr. Gaynor's book is a bold breakthrough in the field of cancer prevention. His excellent book details at great lengh the individual foods and nutrients which may prevent cancer and individualizes for the major cancers. Dr. Gaynor practises what he preaches. As a highly respected New York Cancer doctor, he practises the cutting edge of conventional medicine with the very best or preventive medicine. A must on everyone's medical bookshelf.
great guidance for healthy living!.......1999-01-16
I really enjoyed reading Dr. Gaynor's book. His advice is easy to absorb and understand. I highly recommend this book.
Book starts where others left off----.......1999-01-15
Dr. Mitchell Gaynor's Cancer Prevention Program offers many promises in this January title from Kensington Books. Some of them are indeed justified and backed by recent scientific research. Other such promises in the book border on the unfounded, while others are what would on a careful reading seem to be recycled but updated information - albeit information that is important to know, and in many cases necessary to act upon.
Perhaps that is the value of the recent release of a book whose packaging and theme so closely resemble Dr. Oliver Alabaster's "What You Can Do To Prevent Cancer," 1985; Simon and Schuster. Both authors are physicians and leading research oncologists. Dr. Gaynor at the Strang Cancer Prevention Center and Dr. Alabaster at The George Washington University.
The book is well written, easy to read and at times gives the reader more than an adequate dose of optimism in what the media often portray as a never-ending battle against this country's most feared killer. Specifically, the book seems to give the impression that one can easily "detoxify" the body by choosing a variety of enzymes and other chemicals to aid the liver in its work. Would that the job be so easy! It is an interesting idea, and one loosely based on some body of medical research, but as a concept it might be a bit more optimistic than practical.
The research that the "detoxification" approach is based on is generally valid and promising. In a sidebar in one chapter Dr. Gaynor lists supplements which are certainly of value and would at worst do no physical harm. These include the antioxidant glutathione, whey protein (which contains glutathione, but is seemingly only documented in one Canadian study), broccoli, green tea and selenium.
Dr. Gaynor brings to the reader a wealth of current information almost unavailable in the popular press and which is both useful and necessary.
He succinctly explains what cancer is, how such cells develop, and some of what can be done to prevent cancer in most individuals who are not already strongly predisposed by genetic factors. He correctly states that some 70% of all cancers can be avoided or by prevention but almost glosses over our largest and most constant exposure to the environment -- the very food we eat and the dietary choices we make on a day-to-day basis.
While his emphasis on phytonutrients and supplements is exciting, far too little attention is given to natural sources of these promising chemicals. Less attention is given to the preventive role of dietary fat reduction or restriction. Instead the author develops and promotes a program which relies mostly on supplements and/or foods which for many might seem initially odd and could too easily be avoided.
This is both the strength and the weakness of the book. So strong is the case to use these supplements that the casual and overly-optimistic reader might want to delve into a world of supplements immediately but might soon be disappointed by a lack of understanding, motivation or even in some cases taste. For example, he recommends a number of combinations in the juicer which some who are overly accustomed to high fructose corn syrup might not enjoy. On the other hand his recipe for a combination of apples, carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli was tasteful and left no hint of the "cruciferic" taste that some people try to avoid. This recipe alone might make the book a good investment in future health dividends.
Dr. Gaynor's research is current, sound and well presented. The use of a nutritional pharmacist Gerry Hickey, R.Ph., gives the book its strong emphasis on phytochemicals and other food-based cancer prevention chemicals. The book includes an appendix that is a good source of supplements and other cancer prevention products mentioned which will be of particular benefit to those who live in areas where such products are not easily available. Another appendix lists references of solid peer-reviewed journals for much of the book's information. Of particular curiosity in this regard is a chapter promoting Japanese mushrooms. A highly regarded National Academy of Science Publication, "Diet and Cancer" showed that mushrooms when uncooked contain one of the most potent cancer promoting chemicals known to man. Dr. Gaynor not only leaves this fact out but fails to mention whether or not these types of mushrooms need to be cooked in order to "detoxify" them.
This book is an excellent buy, full of current and useful information. It picks up where Dr. Alabaster's book left off and indeed given that book's emphasis on diet both books should be used in together. A good read, a better source of health information. Highly recommended.
Well worth reading........1999-01-11
If prevention is worth a pound of cure, this book is worth its weight in gold. Dr. Gaynor's book offers some of the best current potential for reducing the terrible price we pay for cancer. At last we have a roadmap, beautifully documented, by a nationally renowned oncologist, that details the increasing amount of evidence that proves that diet offers enormous potential in reducing as well as preventing cancer risk and in cutting cancer deaths. Although we still do not know how to prevent all cancers, this book clearly demonstrates that we know more than enough to dramtically reduce the high cancer incidence rates that we currently have and to curb the growing cancer rates around the world. With the publication of this book, there can be no doubt that nutrition in cancer prevention has come to age. Kudos to Dr. Gaynor and Jerry Hickey for this magnificent book.

Don't Miss Jennings' Acerbic But Well Documented Insights.......2005-02-20
My comments are in response to the "A Book for the Scholars" review. The other reviewer seems to not have understood the late Fritz Jennings' clearly stated purpose for re-examining Franklin's political life. Recall that Franklin retired from his lucrative printing business as a wealthy man. He then entered public life. This latter part of Franklin's amazing life (1744-1775) is the focus of Jennings' admittedly "strongly revisionist" (i.e., a long overdue re-look) investigation. (204)
Although the other reviewer did not like the interpretation of Franklin's public life, Jennings "provide[d] evidence to justify revision." (204) Jennings expressed his admiration for Franklin's
"genius," (15) noble attributes and noteworthy accomplishments. Few lives have been lived so fully. Jennings' research did not "lessen" his admiration for Franklin. A critical analysis of Franklin's political careers in Pennsylvania and England, based upon extensive use of Franklin's recently published papers, shows him to be a "believably human" "political animal" (71) with a huge ego, instead of a "manufactured icon of virtue" (i.e., a Founding Father). (200)
While Jennings' style is acerbic, he is no mere "table pounder" as the other reviewer alleges. As a politician, Franklin at times acted from moral outrage (against the Paxton Boys) or principle (refusing bribes from the Penn proprietors), while in other instances he engaged in self-serving patronage and "realpolitik." Throughout Jennings' scholarship he has decried the fraudulent Walking Purchase and defended the Quaker party's pacifism and policies against historians like Daniel Boorstin, and the political machinations of the Penn proprietors, the radical Whigs during the American Revolution, and now Franklin's anti-Quaker vindictiveness. Jennings also exposes Franklin's contempt for American Indians, which coincided with his militarism and imperial bent.
This is a concise and accessible critique of Ben Franklin the politician that shows how British North American colonial politics really operated. Franklin's almost fatal misstep in gauging American colonial outrage against the Stamp Act, and almost career-ending brief infatuation with royalism, came close to putting him on the loyalist side of the American Revolution with his son. Ultimately Franklin's political genius overcame his ego and occasional indiscretion. The most illustrious part of his public service to America started where this book ends. For that story, readers should turn to Edmund Morgan's biography of Franklin - better than Issacson's or Brands' commendable works. For another great book on perhaps Franklin's most serious flaw as a human being - his inability to sustain a loving relationship with his wife (whom he certainly did not love) or son (whom he adored) - read Willard Randall's "Little Revenge: Benjamin Franklin and His Son." As with Jennings and many other Americans, I remain fascinated by Franklin as a great, gifted, complex man with tragic flaws that hurt others.
A Book for the scholars.......2000-09-30
I wasn't going to assign stars since I'm not qualified to judge the scholarship, but the system forces me to do so. Jennings claims to have examined previously ignored sources, and one must surely commend him for that. The book is generally impressive, but some of the cases where I can judge Jennings' reasoning make me wonder about his judgement in the cases where I have to take his word. My remarks are as a general reader with an interest in Franklin (I've read 3 biographies). The title is a little deceptive here. The book starts off as a biography of Franklin, and ends there, but the topic for most of the book changes to politics in Pennsylvania in the mid-1700s, and the focus is no longer particularly on Franklin, it could easily be said to focus as much on William Smith or Thomas Penn. I don't know what other people are expecting, but I don't think that Jennings has pulled any mask off of Franklin, revealing some previously unknown qualities. Two of the biographies I have read also affected to be iconographic, but neither of those surprised me either. Jennings certainly tries hard, and sometimes a little too hard. I agree with him completely that we should avoid mythologizing people and events, but I don't think this is a good way to go about reversing the trend. I am reminded of the advice to a new lawyer: if the law is with you, pound the law; if the facts are with you, pound the facts; if neither is with you, pound the table. He amply demonstrates that Franklin's Autobiography is selective and self-serving, but I don't think this is a new insight, and indeed is what one might expect of almost any autobiography, which is why I seldom read them. He is pounding the table in chapter 5, however, when he focuses special attention on a passage in the Autobiography where the Proprietary party offers to make it worth Franklin's while to stop opposing Penn. Franklin says that he replied that he fortunately didn't need their favors. Jennings calls this a near lie since Franklin had enjoyed their favors earlier. To prove this, he quotes Franklin's account in the Autobiography, some 60 pages earlier, of the honors that he had received. Since Franklin told his readers about these earlier honors, he isn't being deceptive and we are left with only a petty argument about word usage that isn't worth pursuing. Jennings also holds up a number of examples of what he apparently views as Franklin's bigotry, but he may find that many of his readers do not find Franklin as distasteful as he hopes, for many of these issues are with us today: how do we react to people who refuse to learn English or assimilate? Is it possible or desirable for us to affirm all of the varied and often contradictory views of our fellow citizens? Can we sharply disapprove of some aspect of another person's life and still work with them for shared social goals without being a hypocrite or seeming to approve of everything they do?
