Customer Reviews:
Great ideas for low-cal cooking.......2007-05-19
Though this cookbook does not contain pictures, it contains a lot of great recipes that are quick, easy to follow, and healthy. They have quite a bit of flavor as well, and the portions aren't skimpy (like the weight watchers cookbooks I've found). The recipes are varied and don't call for unusual ingredients - but you'll find that this also isn't your typical American "SAD" fare skinnied down. The recipes are healthy by nature, focusing on healthy ingredients rather than diet-oriented substitutes or trendy low-carb fare.
The cookbook also contains a lot of helpful information on healthy eating and what it takes to lose and/or maintain weight from a healthful, long-term perspective. This is a great addition to my cookbook library.
Great Recipes.......2007-05-14
There were a lot of good heart healthy recipes in the cookbook. I would have liked to have had a picture to go along with each recipe. Sometimes, I can tell if I want to cook the recipe by looking at the picture first.
low cal please.......2007-04-10
Great cookbook! Dieter friendly! I use this cookbook along with the biggest loser cookbook over and over for a little variety.
Truly Excellent Cookbook!.......2007-01-15
I am extremely pleased with many of the recipes in this cookbook. The cookbook is broken down into appetizers, snacks, and beverages, soups, salads, seafood, poultry, meats, vegetarian entrees, vegetables and side dishes, breads and breakfast dishes, and my favorite...desserts! Every recipe is for 4 servings, but thankfully, the book tells you what is considered 1 serving. 4 servings is FINE since most of the meals can be packaged up and eaten for lunch or dinner the next day.
I have made the beef and broccoli stir-fry, the pineapple meatballs, the shepherd's pie, the apple dumplings, the macaroni and cheese with spinach, and the gnocci with spagetti sauce. My husband and I were AMAZED with how flavorful the gnocci and the pineapple meatballs were...we absolutely loved these meals! The apple dumplings were delicious, but they were a little challenging to make...the pie filling kept eeking out the sides when I was trying to fold them into triangles like the directions said. The only one I will not make again was the macaroni and cheese with spinach. I could barely taste the low-fat cheddar cheese and I felt like I was just eating cooked noodles and spinach.
I work full time and I'm also a graduate student, so you can imagine that I don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. There are recipes in this book that take maybe 15-20 minutes to prepare and cook, such as the pineapple meatballs. The gnocci, obviously, will take longer to make and I recommend that some recipes should be attempted on the weekend and made in bulk since you can devote more time to them.
Nonetheless, I am highly impressed with the recipes I have tried in this book! I have used it to keep myself on a 1200 calorie diet and after using it for just a week and a half, I've lost 5 lbs! The recipes are "normal"...no weird casseroles or anything here. And the desserts aren't just fruit like so many other cookbooks push...apple dumplings were fantastic and I'm going to make the mint chocolate cupcakes with devil's food cake shortly.
I recommend this book for anyone trying to eat healthier while still eating their favorites. This book has a recipe for everyone and the nutritional information is broken down for you per serving, so you'll have no problems tracking your caloric or fat intake. Buy it - you won't regret it!
GREAT.......2007-01-09
This is a great cookbook. Alot of great recipes in this. My husband loves it when I use this book.
Customer Reviews:
The worst cookbook I've used.......2006-02-27
I've been a vegetarian for 10 years, and I think this cookbook is just awful. Example: Zucchini Bake ingredients are zucchini, vegan cheese, tomato sauce. Personally, I like food with flavor.
Also, the entire first half of the book is a list of restaurants and which of their ingredients are veggie. I felt robbed when I bought this used. Don't waste your money on this book.
Wonderful!!.......2005-08-02
I am new to the "meatless" world and this book contains delicious, as well as effortless meals. This book needs to be on the shelf of every vegetarian! I love it
Great resource!.......2003-12-06
I just received this book yesterday and could not put it down. It contains great basic information, yummy recipes, and a terrific section on ingredients used by fast food and chain restaurants (restaurants are individually discussed). I know what all my friends are getting for Xmas this year!!!
veg cooking for those who don't like to cook!.......2002-12-28
I LOVE this cookbook--it's the only one I have which is truly easy and brainless. (i.e, "throw these six things into the pot, and cook at med. heat for 20 min.") I became veg as a pre-teen, with a mother who hated to cook, so I never learned how to cook ANYTHING! Now, trying to go vegan, I need to know how to make healthy food for my husband, toddler and baby too! This book is awesome for people like me who don't know how to cook and don't have a lot of time to learn. If, however, you know how to cook/like to cook, you'd probably be better off with something more fancy. This IS, however, a GREAT starting-out, "idea book".
Nice and Easy.......2001-02-06
I think that this book (reviewing 1991 version) is well worththe money. It's not costly yet it provides a nice overview of the vegetarian lifestyle and the recipes are varied and easy to make. I thought that the variety of dishes was excellent. I would have liked to see a low-fat section of recipes but most of the recipes are easy to make and taste good. I think that the menu selection is quite thorough and there are lots of good ideas for breakfast and also for entertaining.

The dignified tabby on the cover of The Quotable Feline almost dares the feline fancier to come closer. Inside, page after page of entertaining photos are matched perfectly with a short poem or hilarious quip. Rich sepia tones add a wonderful antique finish to all the photos, each capturing a classic moment in the day of a cat. A few are special poses--a fluffy white cat draped with pearls is accompanied by Colette's comment, "By associating with the cat, one only becomes richer"--but many are simply kitties caught in the act of being their delightful selves. Peeking out of a fence, staring into a fishbowl, sitting forlornly on the front step--you're sure to see a calico, tiger-stripe, or tabby that reminds you of a favorite pet or kitten moment. Authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams, and Ernest Hemingway cover a range of moods you'll find familiar, from adoration to total exasperation. Your cat's favorite quote is sure to be the one from a royal tomb at Thebes: "Thou art the Great Cat, the avenger of the gods, and the judge of words, and the president of the sovereign chiefs and the governor of the holy Circle; thou art indeed... the Great Cat." Try reading that aloud to your kitty--you're sure to get the look that says, "What, you only just figured this out, human?" --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Forty-five cats, young and old, smiling and morose, affectionate and aloof. Each is accompanied by an apt quotation ("Dogs come when they're called. Cats takes a message and get back to you.") drawn from a variety of the most articulate celebrators of the cat, including Chekhov and Colette, Hemingway and Jules Verne, Leonardo da Vinci ("The smallest feline is a masterpiece.") and Jim Davis of Garfield fame. A cat alone by the telephone, a cat eyeing a goldfish, a cat returning the love of a person, an intrepid explorer kitten--image after image, printed in glowing sepia tones on ivory paper, demonstrates the special grace and intuition that Dratfield and Coughlin bring to the photography of animals. This beautiful cat book is sure to be the perfect treat for your favorite cat lover.

Book Description
Every barn cat, from wry calico to contented tabby, has a place at the heart of the farm. Here is the barn cat that “languishes loudly” or comes on as silent as the fog; who sleeps on the seat of the tractor or curls up in the straw; who stalks the pesky rats and mice, and keeps the farmer company. Aloof or cuddly, on the prowl or distracted by a leaf, these quintessential farm creatures (and surely one of every cat’s nine lives must be lived in a barn) appear here in their infinite charm, their images accompanied by the observations that writers from Shakespeare to Mark Twain have been moved to make on our feline companions.

A must for every cat lover!.......2000-08-06
If you love cats, you will love this book! It contains hundreds of quips and quotes that will delight and amuse every ailurophile. Arranged by subject - Cat People, Nine Lives, Cat Chow, The Amorous Cat, The Mysterious Cat, etc. - these quotes cover every aspect of cat life and relationships. They come from a wide variety of people, including Ernest Hemingway, Louis Wain, Abraham Lincoln and Plutarch. Clearly Ms. Rogak combed a wide variety of sources for this collection. The only flaw is that the sources of the quotes are not listed, which would have added to the book's interest. However, that is the only weakness in a rich, deep and enjoyable compilation of quotes on a subject that is dear to many a human heart.

With that in mind, Denise Little brings us The Quotable Cat, a delightful collection of quotations in praise of our feline friends. Book Description
Outside the occasional meow, cats are not known for their great conversation, but many of their famous human companions have had much to say about them. The Quotable Cat contains hundreds of examples:
Leonardo DaVinci, who really ought to know about such things, has said, "The smallest feline is a masterpiece."
According to Garrison Keillor, "Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a function."
Roy Blount Jr. tells us, "Cats have intercepted my footsteps at the ankle for so long that my gait, both at home and on tour, has been compared to that of a man wading through low surf."
"You can't look at a sleeping cat and feel tense," says Jane Pauley.
Learn all about the secret methods of cat hypnosis, read about theories on purring and get up-to-date on a variety of quaint cat superstitions. Everything you've always wanted to know about cats is in this volume. Aren't you curious?

The Best.......2006-11-22
I'll leave the details to others. For me, Richardson's two (so far) volumes on Picasso are the Best, thoroughly researched, and most enjoyable artist biography I've read. While many other artist bios have nearly put me to sleep (useful - if you ever WANT to go to sleep... just reach for the typical long dry artist bio..) Richardson's two volumes on the life of Picasso I've read through twice. (Allright John, where's that third book already?..)
excellent on picasso's early years.......2006-04-16
of course some elements are lost forever, but it's worth contemplating these early years of picasso and to realize how much he had accomplished by say, 1905. my own image of him has tended to dwell on him as an old man doing a certain style of work... but he was (to put it crudely) young a long time.
Brings to life the great artist's first 25 years.......2002-04-01
I respond as a general reader and can attest that reading this work was very much like engaging in a talk with an erudite and witty and sympathic art loving friend. I say engaging as Mr Richardsom anticipates questions and provides explanations. He is also revealing, at least to my mind, about many of the important figures of the early 20th century, such as Gertrude Stein, but as well, the social and artistic revolutions that were occuring. Picasso himself, however, is determinedly apolitical. The illustrations are useful, plentiful and conveniently located adjacent to the text. Chapters may stand on their own - for example Chapter 28 "Summer at Gosol" has many interesting features that show the artist's creative energy and source of inspiration at the time, the relationship with Ferdinande contrasted with his admiration for a ninety year old patriarch of the tiny mountain village, there perilous journey by mule in and out of Gosol, the atmosphere and the creative joy that Picasso experiences, not to mention the breakthough in his work that occurs at this time. The paperback is sturdily bound and overall, as a read, I found the "story", if you will, a most engaging read.
Classic Biography.......2000-03-30
There should be no doubt that the first two volumes of Richardson's Picasso can be ranked alongside Ellman on both Wilde and Joyce or with Michael Holroyd's bio of Lytton Strachey. If a biographer loves his subject then that is no bad thing. Richard Ellman wrote his bios quite clearly in the style of his subjects and by so doing brought us closer to them.Ellman was obviously completely mesmerised by Oscar Wilde thus the greater the tragedy.
Picasso was no such doomed figure. If a ever a man was blessed with talent, opportunity, lovers sycophants, wealth and long life to enjoy them then this little Iberian colossus had it all. Richardson dotes on his client in obvious awe and why not? The book is painstakingly researched and pulls up from being pedantic by the author's ability to describe the historical firmament in which Picasso's star shone. These bit players (Max Jacob, Apollinaire, Braque, etc.) are giants in their own right and yet it is only Matisse who comes out ultimately unscathed. Mr. Richardson has his own favourites and these are evidently Picasso's too.
It is made plain that despite the comet of Picasso's life and times and all the bright shining lights his work remained inviolate and the unquestionable raison d'etre of his existence . Picasso takes obvious liberties with his friendships and lovers. If this is how a hugely successful personality can behave then Picasso can obviously be a complete swine. Mr.Richardson paints a picture of a man who, for good or evil, is able to absorb the passed and present literate and plastic art talents and synthesise them into his own staggering vision.
It is the unmitigated audacity of Picasso to compare his work on a par with El Greco, Zurbaran, Velazquez, etc. He does though concede their greatness. Nevertheless he has not the slightest doubt that he belongs in that realm. Such nerve!
Picasso was no monk (as the elderly Braque has sometimes been described) and evidently had an ego to match his talents. As a biography Richardson's work has to be amazing to read and leave us hungry for more. It also has to leave a bitter residue as evidence of Picasso's sometimes shabby behaviour.
How would any of us behave if such greatness were thrust upon us? That is simply one of the unanswerable questions a great biography poses.
Now, where are vols. III and IV?
Monumental but readable too.......2000-01-10
Richardson in his landmark biography of Picasso gingerly walks through the minefields that have been laid in the 100+ years that Picasso has been on the art scene. Picasso is near enough to being our contemporary that it would have been nearly impossible for Richardson to have treated him fairly in the minds of many. One of the foremost issues recently raised, is his attitude towards women and his treatment of his lovers and wives. As for what can be gleaned from this and Vol II, Picasso was probably about average in this respect for a man of his time. Richardson seems to have intelligently not taken the bait and endulged in defending the past against the present.
Since Richardson knew Picasso as an intimate friend, there is an air of familiarity that pervades the work. I really enjoyed the feeling of immediacy and of being there when it happened that Richardson has so skillfully woven into the book. In comparison, Simon Schama's monumental biography of Rembrandt (and Rubens) reads more like a peek at the past. Schama can be excused since the passing of nearly 400 years makes writing in the immediate mode difficult and maybe even a little pretentious.
Though definitely not hagiaography, Richardson does treat his subject almost like a doting father, but loving his child warts and all. As to the work being a defense of Picasso in his rivalry with Matisse, one could only read that into the work if one was a rabid Matisse fan. I'm sorry but, Matisse being the giant that he was, was no Picasso.
The book flows like a river. I was truly transported back into Picasso's life and social scene. I found the artistic analysis of his work to be on target and written without much academic showing off or mumbo-jumbo. If you are looking for a Post-Modernist deconstruction of Picasso, it (thankfully!) isn't here. The historical coverage of Picasso's social circle is excellent and made me want to have been able to attend some of the Picasso's tertulias at Lapin Agile. What an exciting time it must have been.
I flashed on Roger Shattuck's book The Banquet Years, which also transports the reader back to Paris in the years 1895 to WW I. Shattuck's book would be a good companion piece or primer for the Richardson series.
I saw Richardson give a lecture in 1998 at the College of Santa Fe. He does appear to be along in years and is definitely no Lapin Agile himself. From the gleanings of an after lecture discussion in the hallway with Richardson, it appears that Marylin McCauley, his collaborator on the project, is equally a writer and Picasso scholar and will be the torchbearer for the future editions. My own suspicions are that she may have been the major writer on Vol II. Since Vol II ends only in 1917, there appears to be at least 2 and possibly 3 more volumes to come. This is truly a monumental work and one that reads well. It could have easily turned out to be a "reference" biography reading like a bushel of note cards strung together.
I highly recommend it and the whole series. (I am confident enough that the ones to come will be as exciting.) Not only good brain medicine for a Modern Art enthusiast but fun reading too.

Customer Reviews:
Gripping Story.......2004-05-14
Wonderful, real-life story of war and all its vagaries. This fellow wanted to strike back at the Nazis, and he certainly did by volunteering for the British army and becoming a parachute commando.
A Hidden Masterpiece about Ignored Heroes.......2002-01-25
I have read this book about seven or eight times. When I finally met the author, Peter Masters, he asked in his usual humble style, "Why?" Here are my answers. It tells a largely ignored story in a literate, humane, and humble way. It tells how people who were victimized in outrageous ways were able to strike back and help defeat their oppressors. It also tells a story of which I (and all of the other World War II history buffs of my acquaintance)was totally igonorant. Finally, it is a story of courage in the face of outrageous horror that stands as a model of how we should react to terror today. In a nutshell: 87 young Jewish refugees were formed into an elite, secret Commando unit of the British Army; all spoke fluent, idiomatic German; all were required to hide their real identities and take on native British personas and names;they were trained in intelligence, reconnaissance, prisoner interrogation, and German tactics; they landed at D-Day, performed courageously thorughout the European war; 19 of the 87 died; the survivors lived to see the defeat of their tormentors. This is a fascinating story of human courage in the face of outrage. And the good guys win! Now my question: why hasn't this book become the subject of a movie or mini-series? In any event, order it now and read it, perhaps seven or eight times -- and tell all your friends to do the same.
A terrific read. Shows D Day as it really was........1999-01-21
One of the best written books about the invasion and the training leading up to it, from the aspect of Jewish teen refugees who were formed into a commando unit of the British army. No histrionics, just good writing.
